Hi there. First of all let me say my experience with custom ROM is all about the Galaxy S i9000.
After switching the official ROMs on my Find 5, which can be done just with the zip and no rooting, I decided to install the latest CM Nightly.
Here's what I did, in order:
- installed Framaroot and used the Gandalf method -> success, got SU and rooting
- installed the "Recovery Tools - Flash" or something like that from the Play Store
- installed CWM from the app, which is the latest touch version
- connected the Find 5 to my pc and put the CM and Gapps zips in the root folder
- rebooted to recovery, wiped Dalvik and factory reset then installed CM then Gapps zip
- wiped dalvik + factory reset again
- turned on the phone
Now, the ROM works BUT here's my problem: every folder created by the applications while I had color ROM, and the apps themselves, are still there! I still have the pictures, the 2-3 apps I left on the phone and everything else.
So my question is:
HOW DO YOU CLEAN EVERYTHING ON THE PHONE TO START COMPLETELY FROM SCRATCH while installing a new ROM?
I'm a fan of fresh installations, I don't even use backup software since I keep few core apps on my phone.
Back on the Galaxy S I just connected it, phisically deleted every single folder on the phone from the pc and put the CM + Gapps zips on it cause the S i9000 recreated the basic folders on itself.
I didn't do a wipe sdcard from the CWM because I red somewhere that on the Find 5 it deletes core system components to so you'll have to unstuck your phone loading the base recovery and an Oppo firmware from your computer...the fact is this way I don't have a fresh installation.
So what, and when, should I do to clean EVERYTHING like I did with my Galaxy S to be sure when I first boot a new ROM I only have the very basic folders Android and the ROM needs to be loaded?
I'll have a work meeting tomorrow so I didn't try the sdcard wipe to avoid staying without a working phone but I installed the very core apps only here so if I need to re-flash everything or wipe something I'm ok with that, I already backed up manually the old contents of the ColorROM(pictures and stuff) so I have nothing but the basics and WhatsApp on the phone right now.
No one? I know it may take a while but I'm kinda stalling to get my phone back to work completely cause I'll probably have to wipe something again to delete everything :/

So for the last 5 days I had some very weird problems with my phone. About 2 weeks ago I started with my first Cronos Rom and it worked great. I flashed 1.5 and 1.5.1 without problems and I used it without an ext partition all the time. But then the problems started. When I wiped my whole phone and tried to reinstall 1.5.1 JIT, the phone didnt boot anymore (stuck on the "Android" bootscreen). I wiped again and again, tried 1.5.1 without JIT, 1.5 etc, but I couldt get the phone to work. Nothing worked, so I created an ext partition and tried again. It worked. My phone started and I was able to use it for about a day without problems though I didnt want apps2sd. But then some other weird things happened. 3 Days ago I bought a bigger SD Card, partitioned it, wiped the whole phone and flashed 1.5.1 JIT. The phone started, but after I installed a few apps, I got an error message (installing xxx failed). I found out that theres an "repair ext" function, and it worked, but after I installed some more apps, the problem was back. The second problem was, that after rebooting the phone, more and more apps wouldnt start anymore (FC). The last problem that occured was an FC of the market app. After that, I wiped everything again, tried to flash 1.5.1 JIT, but it happened exactly the same like on the first time. Problems installing apps, FCs, stuck on boot etc.
I am totally down at the moment because I killed my whole weekend trying to get my phone working again. Could anyone please help my with this? I just dont understand what I did wrong. Shouldnt a complete wipe fix almost every problem? And I dont understand why I suddenly cant use my phone without an ext partition. Any Cronos version I try freezes on bootscreen without an ext patition. Is there any way to get my hero working again? Please please help me.
(PS: I also posted this on the Cronos Board.)
I would take out the sd card, wipe system and dalvik cache, and install some custom rom.
well, to make sure it is NOT your phone, did you try another ROM? Eliminate possible problems?
At least try something that is known and stable, like a stock rom, the Taiwain-rooted-repacks (not a rom based on it, but just the taiwan rom rooted) or good ol' MoDaCo 3.2 (based on 1.5 stock).
Til now I just tried the last 2 or 3 Cronos Roms, and as I said, they didnt work, but when I get home from work I'll try the Modaco Rom I used before.
I dont understand what this has to do with the Rom I use. I always wiped the whole phone, dalvik, etc. so shouldnt it just work like the first time I flashed it? No matter what Rom I use?
Another weird thing (could have something to do with this): After I wiped everything and flashed Cronos 1.5.1 JIT, the market still knew what apps I had installed last time. It showed my bought apps AND the apps I was able to install before the latest crash. So does this mean the phone wasnt wiped completely?
The market tracks your purchases and (free) downloads through your google account. So that's normal that the download-list is full.
But it might very well be that you didn't wipe correctly, although I'm curious how you manage to accomplish that. What is your current recovery?
The whole point about trying another ROM is elimination. It doesn't need to make sense, but you need to check things of the list.
There is something weird going on, so trying to solve it logically will only get you so far . Keep trying to narrow down the list of causes. Might well be a bug with Cronos 1.5, or the overclock not working these days because your phone is just a bit hotter than before, who knows.. Like I said: eliminate causes!
I'm using the newest AmonRa recovery to wipe the phone.
Theres one thing I forgot: Yesterday I flashed 1.5.1 without JIT, and then 1.5.1 JIT right after it (just rebooted a few times between). The phone worked great until my SD card crashed. In the taskbar it always showed me "checking for errors"(something like that, my phone's in german ), but in my PC and in the recovery the card worked like always, so I had to wipe the card and start again from the beginning.
Try another ROM , and if that doesn't work, try without SD card.

Maybe sdcard faulty? What are the logs you get when booting up the phone?
Soooo, I wiped everything again and flashed Modaco 2.8 without an ext partition. It booted correctly, so I wiped the dalvik cache and flashed Cronos 1.5.1 JIT. It also booted (wow, first time it booted without ext since all the problems started to occur) but I instantly got FC's (phone app for example). Now I wiped completely again and flashed 1.5.1 JIT. I hope it boots, as I still dont have an ext partition. As soon as I know something new, I'm gonna tell you.
So now it seems like its working again. I was able to install all the apps I need without a single error and now I'm restoring my settings and contacts. Suddenly it even works without ext again.
I guess there was something very big f*ked up that I couldnt repair by simple wiping the phone. Very weird that just flashing Modaco got it running again. Now I have back my working phone with ultrafast Cronos Rom and without App2SD, perfect. At least till now I hope it keeps working.
Thanks for your help guys, I think I would have smashed the phone to the wall sooner or later. I never thought about flashing Modaco so I'm happy there are people like you.
Thanks again, and thanks to Feeyo for his unbelievable Rom.
PS: Can I uninstall, Facebook and Footprints without destroying everything again?
Yes, just delete both apps using ADB or use a root explorer, search both apps in System/app and delete them.
Or you could use the MoDaCo online kitchen for removing those apps.
Hi everyone
Not sure how, at which point and why, but I've screwed up installing new rom, and now while I can install whatever I want, latest CWM 5.5.04 installed, new roms while do start just fine, don't detect sim, battery shows at 0% full stop, etc...
It started with me wanting to update to latest Elite Rom 9.7 based on MIUI by Terramino. Tried 2 versions, multiple re-downloads, every time it would try to install from zip and just returned the install aborted, bad zip message.
At this point phone is wiped to factory reset, dalvik cache wiped, cache wiped, /system mounted and formatted, so ok, need something else...
Downloaded MIUI 2.1.20 (2.6.35 kernel like the one before reset), and that's when I noticed the problem, thought maybe didn't wipe something correctly, so again factory reset, wipe cache, format /system, retry - same issue, after that it's always the same result whether I use CM7, MIUI or whatever.
Following few threads loaded the 5.5.04 CWM in the end, and to my surprise to add to the problem - now when I mount SD card from within CWM to system - it shows with a cd icon in the system and is now read-only, so can't even add anything to it seemingly.
Booting to pink screen still gives debugging access to internal SD card of the phone via usb.
Any ideas from knowledgeable users as to how to fix this problem? Help greatly appreciated!
That elite rom is only for .32 kernel
you flashed it over official gb that's the prob

Thanks, figured that this was the case, just not sure why after trying to load back newer roms meant for .35 it's still messing it up.
Will do full reload of a kernel and get a proper rom to follow suit, hopefully it resolves the issue.
My friend rooted his Galaxy Tab, and attempted to install a custom rom on it. For some reason, he flashed a jelly bean gapps zip, and now all of the google apps force close (still on the stock rom). This happens even after a full wipe and factory reset, since I would assume the wrong gapps has still been flashed. I downloaded ROM manager from the tablet's browser and tried flashing CWM recovery, but when I reboot into recovery, it just shuts off, and after a while, it's reverted back to the stock recovery (where I can't install zip from sdcard). In addition to this, for some reason, the tablet never gives the option to view files and folders on PC when connected via USB, so I can't even copy the zip files over (USB debugging is enabled). There isn't even any mount/unmount options in the storage settings.
What's going on here, and how can I fix this? As of now, it seems I can't do anything and I may just give it back to my friend.

If you're looking to restore the tablet back to original purchased state then check out this thread here:

Install Kies before using Odin as that will give you the proper drivers assuming you're using a Windows PC. The drivers will install the first time that you have Odin set up and you have the tablet in download mode. More than likely, even though you clicked start, Odin will sit or hang like it's waiting for something. If it sits for a while without doing anything at all, early on, close Odin and restart the setup process again. This time around the drivers are already installed and it should go smoothly from there. The tablet will restart on its own when its finished and after long boot you'll be greeted by the intial setup. It should naturally do about 3 software updates once setup is complete. That means that it will download the 1 update at a time and ask you if you want to install. After each reboot you should see more downloading activity until updates are complete I recommend after the very first boot you shut off mobile data and use Wifi only as these updates may munch up data...
Good luck.:fingers-crossed:
Wow, I really appreciate your response. I'll try this out later today, and post back with what happened (Can't right now as I'm at work). Thanks for your help!
I tried loading the latest build (CM10 11/28) onto my defy. I completely forgot to load gapps afterwards and went ahead and rebooted. Now, it gets stuck on the cyanogenmod logo and does not boot past that. The only thing I can do is remove the battery. When I reboot, the same thing happes. Unfortunately, I no longer get the boot menu so I can't even run recovery from my backup.
How can I fix this so I can use my phone again?

Nevermind...apparently pressing vol. down when the LED flashes blue gets me to a boot menu. Pheww!
Got it loaded, but having several problems: cannot connect to Play store, cannot receive phone calls, and email is spotty.

Your Gapps not working correctly, probably you installed incorrect ones, I recommend you to repeat the whole process:
1 full wipe x2 (you loose data so if you have data ensure yourself a backup)
2 flash stock sbf with rsd lite
3 root your phone
4 install 2ndinit
6 install cm10 from custom recovery
7 full wipe again
8 boot phone at least once
9 install quarx minimal gapps (thats your actual problem, your gapps not working correctly)
10 wipe again
11 restore backup if any.

I don't think he has to flash the sbf, just flash gapps n wipe data n cache. also try dalvik cache

You could simply install a new .zip from recovery. You could use the same CM10 11/28 or any other rom. This shoud work out for you.
I experienced the same with my Defy today and I installed a new CM 10 09/05 by Epsylon and it worked like a charm.
Thank you for the replies!
I had to flash it a hundred times to get it to work (I kept getting write access errors for cache folder). What ended up working was to wipe everything and install the 9/24 build. From there, I rebooted and installed (without wiping) the latest build along with the correct gapps. It works fantastically now! My phone is soo much more responsive and I'm loving CM10.
3ze had it right. I was using the latest gapps (12/2) instead of the "minimal" version in the quarx dir.
I haven't noticed a battery drain as has been widely reported here. In fact, it seems to be less of a drain now though that is likely due to the fact that I wiped everything and only installed apps I needed this time around. Tons of unnecessary apps could explain why my battery life was less before.
I have noticed a slight difference in reception now though. Places that used to be fine for connecting to the network (Tmobile) have now become less strong and frequently dropping out. I wonder if the signal strength could have been messed with?
Ok something weird just happened. I am using TWRP and I backed up my current ROM. I went to wipe via TWRP to install a new ROM and it just rebooted my device instead of wiping it. So I decided to upgrade TWRP to the newest version (as I had 2.6.2 or such) to see if it was the version of TWRP I was using. I downloaded it via GOO and installed it and I rebooted and it took the device a long time to reboot. It then acted like I just installed a new ROM which I did not...I still had my custom boot screen...I then connect it to my computer and it shows that I only have 1.12 GB of storage free yet I do not see ANY of my files. It looks and acts like a brand new device yet it shows that I am using 11 gigs of storage.....I have NO CLUE how to get it back to the way I had it...any advice? I was going to try a wipe but TWRP just reboots and does not wipe anything. I do not want to loose my files but at this point it looks like I am going to.
I ended up wiping my entire device and starting new. I am glad that I use Foldersync.
