[Q] How Do I Remove Emegency Contacts From Emergency Dialer - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

So I had added some people to my "ICE - emergency contacts" group so they would show up on the emergency dialer. My phone keeps calling the numbers while it's in my pocket though. I removed the contacts from that group but they still show up on the emergency dialer screen. I can't find any way to remove the names once they are on there. Is there some other place that I need to remove them from?

Get past your lock screen (i.e. go to home screen), get to the dialer > contacts > groups > ICE emergency contacts. You can edit them there like you did. Try replacing them with others.
Edit: one other thing, did you notice there's also ICE emergency contacts under the "accounts" right below the list on the same groups page? I never realized there were separate ones for the phone AND my gmail account...

I don't have any contacts in either group anymore. They still show up on the lock screen though.

Have you tried removing the security on your lockscreen after removing all ICE contacts then rebooting?
I would try that and then resetting the type lock screen security to something else different than before removing (ie from pattern to a pin, or pin to pattern or whatever) then see if it still keeps showing ICE contacts that you've removed.
Are you stock or on a something else?

Just tried that and they are still there. I did find a post on the Verizon forums where a CSR answered and said once they are called they can't be removed. Not sure if that's true though, seems pretty stupid to not have a way to remove them.
edit: stock/rooted had the issue with 4.3 and now with 4.4.1

Wow, that sucks. I tried it setting an ICE on mine, calling it and then removing it. I was able to, so I don't know if that's accurate about them saying they're not being able to take them out once called.
I was thinking about it a sec and something else you could try if you're up for it and DON'T want to fully wipe your system or do a reset:
be sure your contacts are backed up to your gmail (sync should be set prior) or from your local contacts then remove your gmail account from the phone and be sure there's no contacts in the phone at all....from there go to the phone app (hold down the app from the apps menu then slide to the "i" info)...and clear the cache & data from the app (on mine it ends up showing the contacts app info)... once it's cleared reboot into recovery and try wiping the cache from within recovery (power + volume up) when the recovery menu comes up, volume down to "wipe cache partition", hit the power button to select, and then reboot when it's done.
Again - please note that this isn't a system wipe or reset or the like, just a simply clearing out the cache.
You never know it might help...after that, whether it works or not, you can just re-add your gmail account and your contacts should just sync up after a bit.

It's safer to not have those in there anyway. Too many people who steal phones will scam your emergency contacts. "Yes maam, he is in mexico being held by the police. 1000 dollars to bail him out."

On the other side of this is there anyway to remove the ICE call button from the home screen?

it's likely you won't get there from stock. There may be a ROM or something for root that leaves out the ICE contacts on the lock screen.

That's an interesting thought, I personally never hear about in the news but I'm sure it occurs. But then again, everyone I would have put in my emergency contacts, I'm in contact enough with them that I wouldn't be duped by that.
For some it's still pretty useful if you have smaller kids. Two of mine are old enough the just know how to dial contacts from memory, but it's certainly easier for smaller ones to press the screen a couple off times rather than even trying remember a whole phone number...and even then there's never been an emergency that they've had to use it, I hope they never do.

Awesome app - waiting to fix my phone so I can try this latest version. Really love the sms abilities!

It's as safe as anything else you do on the internet. Like I said, I'm not logging any credential info....it just gets passed to to google with SSL.
I noticed a bug, when you manualy dial from the dial pad you can't dial the number 0, when you dial 0 it comes up as a 9

Fixed and re-posted the new cab.
Nice stuff.
My specs are:
Omnia running 6.5 - WQVGA screen. I know some of these problems might be related to that.
First, I love the fact that you now have that SMS history. It kicks serious ass - I can use my keyboard with xt9 in it no problem or shapewriter - so great work.
However, I do have a problem when it comes to loading my contacts... for some reason nothing shows up. Before I was able to. So, now if I need to send an SMS I have to go into voicemail find the contact and then sms there.
How is the notification system going?
Is there a way to integrate the phone contacts with one touch - or visa versa?
Anyhow, Kudos... great work.
Looking forward to future releases.
Relay address?
I would like to use this with my T-Mobile ToGo prepaid service. However, their data service is restricted to certain sites. There is a workaround but I need the IP address of your relay in order to make the mod on my phone. Oh, and I need to be able to change the URL of the relay to something with tmobile in the URL. Basically what I would do is create a dyndns entry of tmobile.dyndns.org (or something) and then link that to your relay IP address.
Is there a way to change the relay URL in the application and can I get the IP address of your relay? I think it may work.
Thanks

You know what, I actually have a problem similar that I just noticed. It only loads mine up to the P's. Before it was a data source, and now it's enumerated. I'll work on that....don't know what it going on just yet.

Not really. What I had before, and what I hope to have again in a little bit is as close as I could get it. I did improve how the contacts worked, but it looks like I broke it too. Hopefully, I'll have the fix out later tonight.

The notification system would make this awesome. I thought that you might have been working on one because I think you said that the other thread. Anyhow, it would be great if a notification system could be implemented somehow.
And I guess as far as features go - I know that you were not paying too much attention to aesthetics, but perhaps you could have a button on the dialpad for the SMS history, contact list, or favorites, or something... that way the dialer would just be the main dialer I always use. This all piggy backing on the hopes that you get the contact list to work.
Anyhow, heres to future builds
::cheers::

I was just messing with you. The notification is already there, I just commented out the messagebox that tells you there's a new message. I did that because I'm trying to figure out how to send the event to the phone instead of a message box, because the MB won't pop up if the app is running in the backround.

if you don't put in any numbers and hit either the dial button or the sms button, the former takes you to your contacts(and I think I know what's wrong with it, fixing it now), and the latter takes you to SMS history.

Not a problem anymore. Fixed the contacts and a couple of other things and posted a new cab.
Great progress on this app (and in such a short time!). Finally just got the latest version installed and am playing around with it.
The buttons appear to be too big - I would guess I can see about a quarter of the icon I'm supposed to be able to see for ech of the numbers and the dial and SMS buttons down below.
When I click over to SMS history I get a "could not retrieve messages." error.
Dialing gets me a "web exception" error.
Im gonna keep playing with it though.
whoops. new build. should work now.
fixed the smsmessage history "error parsing message xml" error. new build posted. also fixed a small contacts error.
Is there a way to add an auto update function?
The screen does not fit properly in SE Xperia X1a. Can you make a version for WVGA?
- TKN
waiting on qvga. would be happy to test.

Weird sms problem.

Hi there,
Not sure if this is the right place to be asking this question but i'll give it a try.
I am running handcent on my incredible for handling my sms, I have this odd problem where handcent just stopped recognizing messages from one of my contacts. Is there anyway to get it to start recognizing it again?
This happened to me back in june and I ended up resetting the phone to get it back working again. I really don't want to do that. My phone isn't rooted or anything so everything on it is stock. any suggestions would be great.
I had a similar issue once and it was caused by the area code. I didn't have it listed as part of the number for my contact, IIRC.

I do have the area code listed, i also tried deleting the contact from my phone and recreate it.
Could you have possibly "blacklisted" the contact? If so, none of the SMS's will show up in the main screen until you Check off "Show Blacklist" in settings under Security and Privacy.
That's what it was. i have not idea how he got on my black list, looks like i had a few other contacts black listed as well. Figures it was something so simple.

[A] Fix for 'Contact Groups' bug on JI6 based Froyo roms

A number of people, myself included, have mentioned that since installing any JI6 based Captivate Froyo rom, the Contacts 'Group' feature is broken.
Selecting a contact from a group (e.g. 'Family') sometimes opens the correct contact, other times an incorrect contact opens, and sometimes a screen pops up asking us to pick an application from the provided list to be used to open the contact.
When I was trying out some of the I9000 based Froyo roms, I noticed that none of them had this problem. So last night I decided to replace the '/system/app/Contacts.apk' in my JI6 (Cognition 2.2vBETA8.1) with the apk from an I9000 Froyo rom.
With a couple of issues (see RED below), the Contacts 'Group' feature now performs without problem, always correctly opening the correct contact.
I've attached the replacement 'Contacts.apk' file, just BACKUP the original file in your '/system/app/' folder, then swap it with this one, then reboot.
You may find that you need to first 'chmod 666 /system/app/Contact.apk' before you can replace it. Just chmod it back to '644' after replacing.
NOTES:
IF THE AT&T CONTACTS SYNC FEATURE IS IMPORTANT TO YOU, DO NOT USE THIS FIX. THIS IS AN I9000 FILE, IT DOES NOT HAVE THE AT&T SYNC.
If you have any direct dial shortcut on your home screen, you will need to delete and rebuild them after applying this fix.
I found that simply by selecting what groups I want displayed in the contact list fixed all the problems I had.
Contacts > Menu > More > Display Options > Under choose contacts to display, select the dropdown you want to see. I only use Google contacts, so I selected All other contacts and Starred in Android contacts under Google.
Like I said, this fixed everything with wrong contacts being displayed when I tried to call or text the person.

I ONLY use phone contacts, no Google contacts, and no SIM contacts. And this Group bug has vexed me since day one of the leaked Captivate Froyo release, and continued on every Captivate Froyo based rom (e.g. Cognition).
Replacing the Contacts.apk file I attached in post #1 of this thread fixed it for me.

Just found another issues, the phone totally wigs out when using a direct dial shortcut on the home screen..
says its unable to make the call, then if you hit end call it hits the button you cant see, which makes it try to call again, you have to just wait or you will get into some crazy loop.

Thanks for catching that DG, I added it to my disclaimer.
This works great; I am running Cognition 2.2 Beta9 and the only real issue I had was this. I have a large number of contacts and depend on groups. Thanks
For anyone having issues you really do need to edit the permissions; otherwise you will run into problems but it may look like the change was made. I used Root Explorer and copied the original Contacts.apk to a backup directory. Then I went back to the system-apps directory and changed the permissions to rwxrwxrwx and copied the new file over the original. Then changed permissions back to rw-r--r--, which is the default setting and restarted the phone. It works perfectly and I can even use all the homescreen shortcuts (Direct Dial); I did have to delete and recreate them though.

If you are just calling the contact you may just want to use direct dial, or direct messaging if only texting. I don't know of any way to change the contact options for a contact shortcut.

[Q] Text Message Only Shows # and Not Name

Whenever I send a new text message, I enter in the name of the person I want to send it to, enter in my message and hit send. After I hit send, I go back to the list of messages in my inbox. They only show up as numbers now instead of names. If I go to "People" and select them to compose a new message, I enter in my message, hit send, THEN it shows up as their name and not number. Is this the way how it is or can I fix it that shows the name instead of number when just composing a new message instead of going to "People" to select them?
BTW I am fully stock, not rooted
Yeah... Something sounds borked. Try clearing data on MMS.apk. Be advised, you will lose your messages.
Mine has been doing the same thing.
The only way I can tell sometimes is if there is a photo attached to their contact info.

I think I've figured it out LOL.....it was the way how I had my contact number formatted on my google account. I had it with the (xxx) xxx-xxxx format that's why it wasn't able to comprehend the number, but if i have it was xxxxxxxxx, it will show up. I've probably formatted this phone more times then my computer LOL. But I'm still wondering why it didn't read it in my original format when I've had this format since the first days of the G1. Even my old N1 was able to read the number like that. That's weird.
