Hi there,
Not sure if this is the right place to be asking this question but i'll give it a try.
I am running handcent on my incredible for handling my sms, I have this odd problem where handcent just stopped recognizing messages from one of my contacts. Is there anyway to get it to start recognizing it again?
This happened to me back in june and I ended up resetting the phone to get it back working again. I really don't want to do that. My phone isn't rooted or anything so everything on it is stock. any suggestions would be great.
I had a similar issue once and it was caused by the area code. I didn't have it listed as part of the number for my contact, IIRC.

I do have the area code listed, i also tried deleting the contact from my phone and recreate it.
Could you have possibly "blacklisted" the contact? If so, none of the SMS's will show up in the main screen until you Check off "Show Blacklist" in settings under Security and Privacy.
That's what it was. i have not idea how he got on my black list, looks like i had a few other contacts black listed as well. Figures it was something so simple.
Related
I've had two episodes where I sent a SMS to my dad, and the SMS shows up in the list of messages sendt to my sister -> My sister got the SMS.
Another example: I sent a SMS to my friend, and it shows up in the list of messages to my uncle. My friend answered the message.
Anyone else experienced something similar?
Is there a fix?
Can't say that I've ever had that happened unless I mistakeningly sent it to the wrong person. Human error rather than device error.
I'm sure you uncle must have enjoyed the message.
Have you thought that maybe your numbers are messed up?? Or maybe all your contacts are switching with each other to mess you up.
Yep, chedked the numbers. This is definately a device error.
I had this self same problem yesterday! I thought it was me.
I sent an SMS to a friend called 'Ross', it showed up as Ross in the 'To' field but when I went into my sent messages it had gone to a friend called Robert. This occurred twice - but hasn't with subsequent messages.
Weirdest thing isn't it?
Now, how do we go about fixing this?

You need to email HTC support like with any issues / bugs you find or they will never know about them. Then hope they bring out a software fix. If we don't tell them, they will think its only a handful of people and not bother to do anything.
Also make sure your contacts' numbers are correct.
I have had the same problem, but the message hasn't actually been sent to the wrong person. It seems that it gets confused about who the person is. In my example the person I texted began with Dan and the second Theresa, so not next to each other in contacts. Theresa didn't say she had received something from me.
Same problem here
I did report this to HTC along with not getting sms and getting multiple of the same sms. All they suggested I do is a hard reset (already done) which did not change anything. Not very happy with them they didn't day it was a software fault or a fix was coming
They gave me the same response (although I only reported not getting all messages). If the hard reset didn't work they said to get the phone replaced. Its definitely a software fault so I am not replacing it, seeing as others have had issues with dead pixels etc...
It's only a display problem, you just close messages then reopen it, or go to the messages tab of the contact you sent the text to then click on the message and it'll correct the names.
I've had a similar issue once! Strange experience: I actually thought I had sent all kinds of SMS-es to the wrong person ;-)
In my case the names changed back automatically after about 30 bewildering seconds. Never had an issue since.
I have uninstalled Handcent SMS that caused several conflicts on my Hero, inclusing SMS-es not arriving at all. I might have had the 'wrong name' issue when I had Hancent installed. Don't really remember.
Okay so I searched far and wide on these forums for 3+ days now with not answer. Maybe I'm just blind or not typing in the correct search terms but here is my problem...
I have a Sprint HTC Hero rooted flashed bla bla bla the works... anyways the alarm clock sounds are missing and the alarm clock will not work because of this. Does anybody have JUST the ORIGINAL alarm clock files?
Secondly, whenever I goto call someone or someone calls in it shows up on my phone as the same contact all the time calling in/out. It is the last contact on my list.
Any help with these issues would be great!
Anybody that can answer my question would be greatly appreciated... I am pulling my hair out because of this. It is totally messing up my schedule as well.......

In regards to the "original alarm clock files", I think you might want to try installing the alarm .apk file again on your phone.
Have you tried reflashing the ROM? If not, try that -- first without wiping the the phone, then doing so if nothing changes.
If that doesn't work, I'd advice you Sprint RUU your phone, TEST the Stock ROM to see that you do hear the alarm sounds and that your calling problem is fixed. If this happens to be the case, then there was probably a glitch in the ROM -- happens sometimes. Reroot, install recovery, and flash ROM of your choice once, test again and report back.
Hope that helps. I've attached the file below.
To install:
1. Download file -- DO NOT EXTRACT IT
2. Place it into your AndroidSDK\tools folder
3. Run this command in Command Prompt, make sure you cd into your tools folder first though.
Code:
adb push WorldClock.apk /system/app/
adb shell reboot
Thank you for the help pseudoremora I finally was able to get my alarm clock sounds back however my contacts issue is still an issue.... I've tried re-flashing and doing the Sprint RUU like you said but my contacts still jacks up. It will always be the last person on my contacts list that shows up whenever someone is calling me regard less if it is that person or not. It confuses the hell out of me and I can't ignore phone calls properly now! lol Is there anything else that you could think of that might be effecting this? I've tried downloading just the contacts file as well and re-installing that on my phone but it does the same stupid thing.

No problem for the help. With this contacts problem -- I would double check your contacts and verify that the numbers match with the correct people and also check your Gmail account contacts as well -- Gmail might be merging or somehow doing something weird and causing this problem, since your Gmail account is tied to your phone. That would be pretty much my last guess.

Yes I've already gone through and checked the numbers of each contact to make sure nothing was matching up. I also disabled Gmail contacts so that I only have the ones that I hand jammed in. I am at wits end on this one.. I've flashed the Sprint RUU like 50 times now with no such luck (1.56.651.2)

Hm... I don't know then. Have you talked with Sprint at all? Have you checked out some other forums to see if this problem has come up?
If not, try that as well - cause I'm out of solutions.
Check AndroidCentral, Modaco's website, anything dealing with Android phones. Sorry I can't be more of a help.

I've talked to Sprint about this issue and they were completely clueless... they didn't even know what a rosie was. I'll try searching those other places thanks pseudoremora for your help. I'll post up any updates if I get this issue resolved.

No problem. Good luck.
Hi everyone,
hoping that someone may be able to help me.
about 6 weeks after i got my phone i started having problems where in conversation mode i would reply to a message and it would go to another person in my address book (ususally the last person i had text'd). it wouldn't happen all the time but randomly.
I was on t-mobile but i upgraded the ROM (now 1.66) and tried doing a few hard resets. the phone would be ok for a little while then the problem would start again. because the phone is now past its month i can only get a repair. t-mobile don't know that i have upgraded the rom (i had to use hspl to do it) and htc said because i have upgraded the rom i've now voided my warranty.
anyone heard of any fixes or am i stuck with a phone that doesn't work so great for the next 15 months? (i've had the phone now 4 months and have been trying to deal with this problem for about 2.5 months now)
i've probably left out some vital information, if so my apologies.
thanks.
edit - if you have a moment to spare, could you test for this bug. DeadVirus has suggested a way to recreate a problem (post #14) that is being experienced by a few. thank you.
try flashing a 2.01 or higher ROM.
It was this problem which made me sell my HD2. I have only seen two other people, including yourself, report the issue here. Changing ROMs didn't seem to help, although I didn't try 2>
thanks both for your suggestions.
Can I ask sunking, why you didn't think of going down the repair or replace route?
I'm considering removing the flashed rom and seeing what t-mobile can do.

I did, the handset was replaced three times but to be fair the SMS misdirection bug was so random and intermittent that although it hadn't shown up on the third handset, by this time I had lost all faith in the device. The volume was extremely loud anyway, even on the minimum setting so I returned the handset. It's a shame because I do miss that screen and the browsing capabilities.
I have this problem too! Any solution? It's anoying!!!
the only work around i have read that works is to just text from traditional mode. it's ugly and the spoilt child in me doesn't want to accept that but it's a short term fix.
have you spoken to htc? when i called them, they said they were unaware of such a problem.

I've just sent them an e-mail.
I hope this gets fixed soon!
WOW!!! that is worse than the msgs act. not being sent..it really is. i havent had this prob as yet (touch wood)...as much as i love this phone but that could have been the final straw for me to dump it.
I had the same problem. Phone is crap (firmware) in my opinion, I'm sure the fanboys on here will disagree.
One thing that I had notice, there are two registry values, LatestPhoneNumer and SelectedPhoneNumber in [HKLM\Software\HTC\HTCMessaging\Menu]. When the phone is about to send a message to the wrong number (you can check by doing "Menu->Send options" on while writing the sms), the SelectedPhoneNumber is with the wrong phone number, while the LatestPhoneNumber is with the correct one...
I think that the fact that SelectedPhoneNumber storing the wrong number is causing this stupid problem.

i think you've definitely pin pointed the place where the problem is occuring. would you mind if i copied your message to send to htc?
i wouldn't mind if i needed to check before each text but where is Send Options? are you in conversation or traditional mode? have you already typed a message. i can't seem to find it under menu. all i get is insert, quick text, delete, discard, text size, recipient phone number (which is greyed out in conversation mode) and all messages.
sorry for the stupid question.
if you can solve this i'll name my first born after you. that's right, i'll name them deadvirus.

I have already sent a mail to HTC, but you can do the same (more people, faster fix).

Sorry, it is "recipient phone number" and only works if you are in threaded mode (sometimes). I've translated it from my language and I thought that it was Send Options... sorry.

Don't do that! Poor kid! XD
workaround?
I think I have found a workaround!!! It seems that if you use the Back hard button to get out of the contact message conversation window, the problem does not occur!
So, I think that the problem can be reproduced by doing the following (only in threaded mode):
1 - Open the Messages inbox;
2 - Open one contact and tap on the write area;
3 - Tap on Menu then Recipient phone number and check if the correct number is selected (It should show a small ball on the right side of the number). If the option is grey then wait a second and try again. If it's still grey it means that the contact only has one number associated and it is the one that is used for the next sms.
4 - Tap on Menu then All Messages;
5 - Open another contact (different from the first) and tap the write area);
6 - Tap on Menu then Recipient phone number and check the number. If there is no green ball (and the option is not greyed out) it's the bug!
You can do all the steps above, but using the Back hard button instead of the All Messages screen button (in step 4) to check if the workaround really works.
Give some feedback please...
EDIT: Using the Back Key also seems to solve the other bug about sms being loaded in background and covering the writing area!
No one can test this?
sorry dv, i wasn't notified of a response to the thread.
ummm... i'm trying to reproduce the problem but it is not happening for me. recipient phone number is always greyed out for me.
i suspect the problem occurs for me when there is a lag when switching between recipients on screen. it's like the information isn't re-written in the registry (as you suggested earlier).
my latest with htc is that i have been instructed by the email support to call htc helpline. will call next week and let you know.

no, even trying a few times, it remains greyed out.
i have recently deleted all my messages. i remember it happens when i have a few hundred messages saved. do you think that may have something to so with it? perhaps a regular deletion might avoid it having a conniption?

I don't think so... I have had it with a few messages in the box...
Have you tried to test it with two contacts with more than one number each?

no, i'm afraid don't have any contacts with multiple numbers attached to their names.
Here's a weird one. I just found out one of my contacts hasn't been getting my texts for the last 2 weeks. I still receive his but can't send even though I do get a sent verification.
I can send to everyone else w/ no prob & he receives texts from others with no problem too.
I D/L'ed & used handcent for a while & then uninstalled it... Could that be it? WTH happened?!?!
Thanks for the help.

might be a weird question, but what phone does you friend have?
me and my friend had the same problem..i wasnt receiving his text, but he was receiving mine.
There are a few bugs in the messaging app. In your case, it sounds like your friend's phone number / name has become associated with a different phone number (within the messaging cache). So, even though your display will show your friend's name, that's not where the messages will be sent.
Try to delete all of your threads and then reboot the phone. If that doesn't work, try clearing the data for the messaging app and then reboot your phone. That should do it. If that doesn't work, you can take the most drastic step, which is to do a factory reset, but then you'll need to do a restore of your apps and other data that would get wiped out.
Secondarily, there's a slightly different bug that could be happening (one that is much more rare than the first) - which is that your friend's phone number is the same, except for the area code, as someone else in your contact list. The messaging app only looks at the last 7 digits to determine a match for the phone number, so 415-123-1234 will match 310-123-1234. This one is much more rare, but that's another possibility.
BTW, these problems are internal to a specific Android class, so it doesn't matter whether you use Handcent or the stock messaging app.
Hope this helps.
I searched around and found a few people that had this issue, but not with the Continuum any fixes I found/suggested, I have tried. I just recently rooted and loaded clean DL17 ROM. Everything is working great, phone seems to be little bit more responsive and more snappy. Now before rooting and flashing I never had this issue. So it could be a newer issue or older and I'm just now experiencing it. If I receive a text from anyone that has their number on their Facebook profile the format comes up (+1-###-###-####), if I reply to the message they won't get it. I have tried deleting all conversations in messaging and fixed the number format to (###-###-####)and initiating a conversation. Once I get a reply number format changes back to the +1 format. I scoured google and it seems some people just started having this issue Monday and I also read this is an older Facebook issue. Apparently the +1 is a country code, I have tried creating a phone contact and linking with the Facebook contact, as well as setting certain numbers as default with no luck. No matter what it always defaults back to +1 format. I can call people using that format no problem. I don't think the new ROM has anything to do with it but could be. I more or less think its just a coincidence this just happened to start on the week I decided to root and flash my phone. If anyone has any ideas or info. on this please share. Thanks
PS: The two buddies who numbers I'm experiencing this with have Droids. They don't have an issue. My number shows up on their phone in regular format ###-###-#####.
+1
I had the same problem with regular texts. It is the +1 that is doing it. I had to edit all my numbers in google voice. I resorted to going to Verizon and having them monitor my tests. It is device specific on their end.
