[Q] Sudden Device Lag - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm having this problem with my white N9005 device, it's making this annoying lags/hangs whenever im using it. It's like something is updating on the background. It will hang for 2-3secs then go back to what it's doing.
For example, messaging, whenever im typing something it will stop but i can still press the letter but won't show up in the screen, after said lag the letter that i pressed during the lag time will appear as typed. I dont know how to explain any further. Anyone experienced this issue? Any solution? Thanks!

Check for rogue apps that could be slowing you down or next I would back up any needed info from your external SD card then format it.

@jdgamble i'm having the same on my exynos note 3 after upgrading to kitkat! i'm still experiencing the problem! please let me know if you find any solution.
edited: the problem got sorted out after removing the external sd card! there isn't any virus on it but the lag is no more! even the boot & shutdown times are much faster!

Occasional freeze problem

I recently got a Touch Dual/Niki and from time to time when being in standby (the screen turned off) it doesn't respond on any button press, nor does it react when trying to call it, I've got it back up and running only by removing the battery, setting it back and then I can turn on the device again.
I haven't really customized anything and the only 3rd party software that I know that have been running at the time are gmail client and/or live messenger
Anyone else experienced the same problems? ..does this seem like some software bug, or is my hardware faulty?
Rom: 1.31.414.02
Rom date: 11/02/07
Radio version: 1.58.16.27
Protocol version: 25.61.30.03H
Operator Saunalahti/Finland
same problem here!
I'd guess hardware, but just to be safe, you should probably do a hard reset and see if that helps. I had a problem with mine where it would lose random amounts of time every once in a while (the clock would be completly wrong) and the screen would become completely unresponsive for over a minute just after I rebooted the phone. At one point, it just decided it didn't want to boot and just got stuck on the WM loading screen, even after multiple hard resets. I replaced the device and the new one works perfectly.
yup, me too.. happened today after i finished a call. i just left the thing alone for a bit & was ok later
ok, just did the hard reset, if it happens again I'll go replace it

same here. at the moment I try to live with that, although it's rather annoying. happens 3 to 4 times a day. no response to touchscreen or buttons, but touching the screen makes the backlight going from dimmed to bright. (you know, after quite a while being idle, it dims and after another while it goes to standby)
about half a minute later it's back and executes some (or all) of the inputs at once.
I use some third party programs and tools, but nothing which diggs deep in the system (except AEButton+). So maybe it's one of them. Also I use scheduled IMAP synchronization, which may also play a part in this.
Any one-fits-all solution is deeply appreciated. (Not very impressive to show a frozen device...)
Cheers,
jekk
Ok, it just happened again.. I'll go complain to service.
Same thing here... happens whenever it feels like it. I thought it may have been one of my apps.... particularly Photo Contacts Pro as every now and then that does some strange things, but interesting to know this happens to others as well.
yeah
just happened to me again as well
any solutions?
*bump*
Currently I wonder whether this is a hardware or software issue. So some questions:
did someone flash the problem away?
did someone hard-reset the problem away?
did someone device-replace the problem away?
This would be helpful.
Cheers,
jekk.
Flashed my niki.
I'm getting very regular freeze up's on browsing the internet with a 3G connection. I'm waiting for a new ROM to arrive to determine if the problem is software/hardware (unless both ROM's use the same base Rom )
My old prophet had an easy accesible reset button, unfortunately I have to remove the batterycap now and I have a feeling the mechanisme won't hold for 2 years if I open it every day a couple times.
FWIW, my device is currently sent in for service, I'll report back with the outcome when I eventually get a device back..
Isn't it just brilliant, after a week of "service", they tell me freely translated: "No problem found. Device reset. (Might it be the standby mode from which the device wakes up by pressing the power button?)"
Of course they did not bother to call me to ask for further clarification... Now I'll have to wait until it arrives back at the shop where I sent it in so I can go and send it back..
Oh the joy!
Same freeze problem
Hi guys
I' have same freeze probleme on my niki, i made hard reset without solving nothing.Only solution remove battery and restart.
In my case it always happens while system is in stand by so my phone goes offline and i havent any advice.
Last mornig after a night recharge a foud my niki completely uncharged with red led.I have ordered a new battery hoping the problem may be in my battery.
I had the same problem. Sometimes it wouldn't wake up when I pressed the powerbutton.
Last thursday I flashed my device with Tom Codon's ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=364335
I haven't got the problem since
I had never experienced any freezing problems with my niki until yesterday, when I first started using my new 8gb sdhc microsd card. Now it has happened three times! Is it possible that the driver is to blame? We know older devices had some perculiar issues with external storage upon wakeup.
For clarity; I have a 16-key niki from orange using the stock rom and the card is an sandisk class 4.
Let me know if you guys have a similiar setup.

I've just hard reset mine .... now seems stable ... before it was freezing every time I tried to use it.
So now I have no SD installed + no apps.
Before
SD with very few apps
Sprite backup HTC version
Informant previuos version
Flex Mail 2007
Copilot 6
Fsecure from Tmobile customisation
So I am thinking SD compatability may have been my issue ... I only had a 2GB Sandisk Premier. Will try a 1GB later

That's interesting... I am also using a (4gb) micro sd card. Maybe this really is the reason for the freezes. hard resets (2 till now) didn't solve the problem for me and I have not tried flashing a new rom yet. so this goes well with the possibility of a misbehaving driver thing.
As I wrote I only had freeze up's during browsing the www. After reading that there might be a sd-card driver problem I changed all IE temp directories back from the storage card to the device itself and I now can browse uninterrupted. So it seems that there is a slight driver issue.

Changing SD card semed to fix things for me ..... at least for th last few days.
Before I swapped card I had constant problems

using camera = reboot !

Hi ,
I think all people who have the galaxy s4 i9500 version faced the rebooting problem when the
Camera is opened and it's really annoying!!
I did contact the Samsung Exynos on twitter and they replied
that samsung might help me with their updates !! Really
and where the hell is this update ??!!
I really can't understand is it that difficult to come up with a small update to solve the problem ? I'm thinking that I might have to sell the s4
Thank you all
Got my exynos octa yesterday and it happened to me once so far..
i have a same prob
i have a same prob im witing for the next update ...... my phone reboot after lunching the cam
flash latest framework via odin
Same happened to me few days ago but doesn't seems to happen anymore after I turn off GPS tag

There are other topics open for this exact problem. Thing is, what some have figured out so far is that limiting background applications to 4 from developer options will solve the rebooting issue. Turning off the new s4 features (air gestures, smart screen) will improve the camera app access time.
Hope this helps (temporarily)

TRY THIS.
1.Turn Your i9500 Off.
2.Remove your Sd card.
3.Power up your phone.
4.Use the camera ( you will most probably notice it's significantly faster )
5.With the phone ON, insert your sd card into the phone.
I did this and the lag on my camera seems to have disappeared and the phone is suddenly performing like a beast.
I have no idea why this works, but it works for me,[ so far NO REBOOTS ]

[Q] Screen wake up lag since KitKat update

Hey guys
I updated to the OTA KitKat update, and now have a rather irritating issue that I did not have before. My phone is not rooted, and I'm not using an s-view flip case. I've tried using different lock screens, but it makes no difference.
Since the update, if I press the power button or home button to wake the screen, it sometimes takes 3 - 5 seconds to actually turn on. The strange thing is that if I turn the screen off, then back on within a minute or two, it's as fast as it should be at turning back on. But if the phone sits, untouched, for ten minutes or longer, it takes forever to turn on.
I tried wiping the cache partition, and disabled S voice wake up commands, and double tap to launch S voice.
Any ideas?
Do you have an SD card? That has been known to cause that issue.

I do have one, but it's an old crummy one. Does a bad one cause it? Or a lack of an SD card?
Thanks
Actually having one in your phone has caused that lag before. If you don't have one in your phone then not sure.

I have an sdcard in my Note 3 and if anything my phone turns on quicker with NC2 than it did on MJE.

I disabled double tap home to open S voice. I don't want to completely disable S voice, because in conjunction with S for switch voice, it's a very handy tool!
Since I removed the SD card, it has been performing as it should. Must have been the SD card all along. I feel a bit guilty starting a thread about this, when there is already information out there about SD cards causing lag, but but my problem didn't start until immediately after upgrading from JB to KK, and I've had this phone since launch day. Made me think it was a different issue. One again the awesome community at xda helped me out, and quickly!
Thanks guys!

What I don't understand is why this is just accepted. I have a class 10 card and my only solution to lag is to pull it out?

I'm not complaining because I had a really old, crappy 8gb SD card, and I stored nothing on it. Didn't even need it. I assume an updated sd card wouldn't have this problem, but that's just an assumption on my part.

Random Rebooting!! Please Help!

Hey, I have The Samsung Galaxy S5 for a year and a half now. For about the past 9 months, the phone would trigger random reboots but they wouldn't be a full reboot. What I mean by this is that the phone would not ask me for my SIM card pin as it would do whenever I'd restart or reboot the phone manually. Also when I boot it into recovery mode, a dead droid icon comes up right before showing up the recovery mode screen.
I have tried the following:
Clearing cache
Factory Formatting
Reflashing OS/ROM
Running Safe Mode
Running the phone clean
Running without SD card
And running without SD card and clean
This is really annoying and a reply and possible help would be really helpful.
P.s. I have tried going to my operator and the phone was sent away and 'repaired' but this problem is still persistent.
Hello Dude!
In my opinion this sounds like a hardware, not a software problem. Does your CPU/GPU heat up often/fast? This could happen an overload and than your phone reboots. Furthermore, did you overclocked your phone in any way? I got the same problem after doing that. More possible reasons I can't imagine.
If you have some questions, ask me

Hey, I actually don't really overclock phones which I use (I only do it with ones that are a spare and something to mess around with. Also no it doesn't tend to heat up on me at all actually. It restarted 3 times in space of 30 minutes this morning by simply watching youtube. The resets are random and can happen at any state of the phone.
Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it.

Ohh okay. Anyways I think that this is a hardwareproblem. I am sure that your problem is very rarely as well.
I think only Samsung or a new phone will solve this problem.

Lockscreen Lag

Has anyone else noticed that when you power the screen off but then want to power it up right away afterwards there is about 2-3 seconds where the screen just stays black? Im wondering if its the animation that is causing this. Anyone else experiencing this?
Thanks,
Mike

Since the August update I have observed that the Gallery hangs very often and the pics dont show up immediately. Also the phone in general lags while unlocking. Earlier i used to think its because of the update. But whenever i remove the sd card it works fine. I am using a 64 GB Sandisk 80 mbps class 10 card. Could it be because of the card? Dont wanna spend another 1600 Rs for a card only to find that the problem isnt solved .
Should i try using Samsung card?

And it is present regardless of SD Card/LTE and even after cleaning cache or wiping data

That is definitely too much lag.
Are you running stock rom? Running xposed with a lot of modules? I read about the latest aod update gave some users lag. But I don't know the extend of it.

I forgot to precise it is SM-G935FD. I suspected OTA updates at first and I tried factory resetting the Stock ROM through stock recovey multiple times but the lag reappears either immediately or after a few days (without installing new apps). I then decided to root it and flash superman ROM latest version (with SupeSU, Xposed and magisk and with SuperKernel), it got fixed and then for whatever reason it reappeared again. Now I've tried clean installing the same ROM and following the same steps without any luck.
Hello there,
So I've got some updates on this lag that may help others :
-First, it doesn't matter if you're on stock or on custom ROM.
-It has nothing to do with SD cards or LTE network.
-A simple reboot or powering off/on makes the lag disappear momentarily.
-A clean falsh (with smart switch) can help but doesn't make the problem go away indefinitely, I'm not sure why. It still happens after that but a lot less frequently.
-I've narrowed down the bug to Google play Services, anything that it has permissions to access can cause the bug to reappear, installing apps, downloading contents through apps, making a phone call and sometimes taking a picture/deleting it... Etc.
-disabling Auto-updates in Play Store, proved rather helpful.
-Finally, I think that Samsung will fix this lag, intentionally or not, with the Nougat update since it is apparently a compatiblity issue with the latest Google play services updates.
In my experience, doing a clean flash, disabling Auto-updates both in Settings and Play Store makes the lag less frequent. Powering off/on solves it when it does occur occasionally.
Same error
I am also facing the same problem after upgrading to Android N, but I have not find any solution yet.
