Need help restoring - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

So i have the sprint s4 on 4.3 with mk2 build. I rooted my phone yesterday and made a backup using twrp. I tried to flash a rom but all it did was reset my phone so i tried to restore from my backup that i made. i thought i knew what i was doing and now im completely lost. i get into recovery mode and can restore and it goes through the process. it then comes up saying to reboot and when i press that the phone turns off. once i get it back on it stays at the sprint screen. ive waited about 20 min to see if it would eventually turn on and no luck. can someone help me find this problem or direct me where to look. everything i find is about mja not mk2.

Is your new rom on sd card?
Is your backup on sd card?
Always store backups and roms on your sd card so you don't wipe them in the process of a new install.
If so... b4 flashing your new rom did you wipe all the proper things?
.............Steps............
1) Always make a backup 1st and save it to sd card.
.....Full Wipe/Clean Install.....
2) Do a factory reset wipe data
3) Wipe cache partitions
4) Wipe dalvik cache
It has even been said to do steps 2/4 3 times each to ensure no left overs from other roms.
If not these all the things you will need to do to. It is known as a clean install and is a must when going from one rom to the next.
if your still having trouble with restoring your backup try wiping all the listed things above then restore your backup. You should be fine after that. Hope this helped !

After your restore try not rebooting, instead go back and clean your cache and dalvik cache. Give it a couple minutes to start up after you reboot. If not, I've also found that installing another compatible kernel after you restore will usually do the trick also.
What rom? Stock?

I think I messed up... DamageLess ROM

I posted this on DamageLess' page in hopes that he could help me, but I haven't gotten a reply yet. I figure someone on this forum can help me.. Just read the paragraph and you'll know my problem...
Hey man, I really need your help
I tried using your new DCUpdater (which is a fantastic idea btw) and i'm having a major issue. My phone won't boot. At first I was having problems with SuperUser, but I fixed that by enabling USB debugging, then unplugging the phone, then using the Updater. That worked. But when I tried to reboot the phone, it wouldn't boot. I wiped, restored to my most recent backup, and it still won't boot. I wiped, manually installed your new ROM, and tried to reboot again, and that's where I am right now. It had the Quietly brilliant screen, flashed the sprint logo screen, and now it's back to the Quietly brilliant screen. I think it's in an endless boot, because as I was typing this, the screen flashed grey for a second, then it flashed the sprint logo, and now it's back to quietly brilliant. Please please PLEASE get back to me asap, because I don't know what to do.

id say do not flash a rom. do a factory wipe then restart. read my comment under ur original post
You can do what the 2nd guy said..
Wipe everything.. Then dont flash or nandroid restore.. JUST reboot your phone.
Or save all your files to your computer that are on your sdcard... Repartition your sdcard. Then reflash the rom and move your stuff back.

I just did a factory reset, wiped my Dalvik cache, and wiped my sc card option thingy. I went straight from there to rebooting my phone. I'll say something if it boots now
i'd say wipe settings, wipe ext, wipe dalvik, flash rom, boot. if that doesn't work, wipe again and again then boot.

Phone Totall Messed Up

Ok I had my phone rooted and had voodoo on it. The phone was having issues downloading from the market, plus I couldnt turn the phone on unless i had it pluged in. So I tried to reset it using odin and the Stock-i500-VZW-Recovery.tar.md5. Now when I turn the phone on i get the android application has an uxpected error and I cant get past that. What do I do? Or how can I get my phone back to stock so I can re-root it.

Jeff,
See this post for returning to stock http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782204. I would do this as a last resort only.
Good Luck!
that is what got me to this problem. there are multiple files there what one do i use?
You apply them in the order they are listed.
1. Apply the "/system" file first
2. Apply the "kernel" file second
3. Apply thie "recovery" file third
This restores stock /system, the stock kernel, and the stock recovery. Pretty much brings you back to stock. Is that what you're trying to do?
I was having the same issues with USB cable looking like it was plugged in so I couldn't reboot unless it was plugged. I tried the voodoo uninstall and screwed up my data partition.
I ended up restoring the CWM_Kernel and Di01 Stock update which brought me back to stock with root and OTA update from Verizon BUT my Data partition is screwed and I have no internal app memory. Also, I have an Nandroid backup that I tried to install but that causes the FC issues that you mentioned. My guess is that my nandroid backup will work once I fix the data partition.
Later tonight, I'm going to try to put the stock MBR back onto the phone which I think you need to do as well.
However, it sounds like you didn't complete the whole recovery process and only applied one file. I'm an android newby so you can't take my advice to the bank but I think you need to restore all the files if you're going to flash with Odin per those instructions.
For me, I had CWM loaded so I just wiped the kernel and put back the DI01 ROM which put me back to stock albeit with some work to do to get my data partition back in shape. I hope this helped, for what it's worth.
Since you've already got the original.mbr copied and the stock.zip flashed...
Boot into CWM recovery and wide data/cache.
If you have a CWM backup of your phone in a rooted state, restore that backup through CWM.
Reboot, and go into "settings" if possible at this point, and factory reset.
This got me back from market failure/0.00/fc hell after utterly failing to heed the voodoo warnings and trying to revert to stock without undoing the lagfix.
You'll likely need to use the unsigned d101 apk if your backup/flash is dh12. The OTA update did not work for me at that point.

My question is do i use the phone. pda or csc buttons for these files?
Ok in Odin use the PDA button for the /system
but what button do i use in odden to load the kernal.tar and recovery.tar
i loaded the pit, and installed all the files using the pda button one after the other. now my phone get no service and it still isnt wiped. what is going on? how do i get the phone back to out of the box condition.
also, now i cant do a factory wipe/reset, im getting the error message Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
Gotta do the mbr fix from the 0.00 internal memory topic and then restore nandroid recovery.
Oh, and it is PDA for all three files, not just system.

recovering data from download mode?

A coworker of mine installed the OTA update Verizon was pushing down, after rebooting the phone was stuck at the Samsung logo.
We can get the phone into download mode, but recovery errors and none of the buttons respond. (Similar to this thread)
If need be I can take a screenshot or type out the error text he receives trying to go into recovery (stock)
A little more info i can give as is: his phone is stock rom, but I do believe he has it rooted.
I have flashed roms onto my phone (Captivate) so I am familiar with working with Odin, but the problem is that he has data on the phone he needs to recover.
ADB does not recognize the phone, but his computer does seem to detect it.
Does anyone have any advice on getting something to recognize the phone so we can pull data, or is there a rom/setting that would leave his data as is?
If you odin a rom or even flash a rom it doesnt touch any of the data on the SDcard. he will loose call history and sms history. Pictures and things will be left on the sdcard untouched.
This is the most complete and up to date guide for the fassy:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238070
Thanks for the heads up.
Just to be clear we are talking about the internal SD card right? Not the removable one.
He is apparently mostly concerned with losing his app data. As long as that will be safe I can have him up and running in a matter of minutes, especially with your link.
NO app data will be gone as well
What rom did he have or was it stock?
when i said the sd card i was referring to the removable one.
I figured that was the case
He is running the stock Froyo rom.
Would it be possible to use Odin (or some other tool) to push CWM onto the phone and maybe get it to mount from there?
He did say Odin recognizes a device when it's plugged in.
You may be past the point of no return. Since the phone is boot-looping and not actually booting up there may be no way to root the phone to flash CWM.
Odin is unfortunately a one-way street. Its designed to flash data ON to the phone, Not pull data off.
the phone does not have to be rooted to odin cwm....that being said, op try odining cwm2.5.1.x red and three finger into recovery, wipe cache & dalvik, then go to my guide section 1, use ccampos powerwashed ed05 froyo. That rom is close enough to what stock froyo is, so it might work! Or you can try geewiz froyo also, but one of those might get the phone back up and running without completely wiping everything.
just fyi once you odin a full rom all app data is gone. I have never attempted to pull app data from the mounting of the internal memory using cwm.

Thats why I suggested to try and flash a close to stock froyo rom in cwm without wiping data. odin will do a full wipe, so thats his only option that I am aware of.
Could he odin a recovery, make a back up, flash a new close to stock rom, advanced restore data? It would probable have alot of issues but may give him the opportunity to make a backup.

my co-worker had something similar happen and this is what I had him do. It didn't fair too well but it was worth a shot.
Ended up using odin to push a stock verizon rom and started over. Then I MADE him put cwm on his device and make a backup immediately incase it were to happen again.

I wiped data, and I don't have a previous ROM or nandroid to go back to, because I (stupidly) wiped EVERYTHING last night, and I've been working on fixing it since then .... I'm currently booted to recovery though, and I may just push a new ROM to it and try again
says my SD card is read only? trying to remount it as rw
I ended up having to reflash all the stock images...
could be worse.
keep a copy of your latest running rom/kernel/gapps in your storage, for just in case. thats my normal procedure, if you dont want to keep a nandroid backup in your storage, because of its size. but a nandroid backup would be ideal
Having the same issue. Tried installing new Carbon nightly (with factory reset) and didn't boot past Google logo. After that I restored my nandroid, which lasted for about a day or two. Today I started getting force closes and phone won't boot. Now I'm backing up everything (ADB rules ) and will try stock image.
Dont feel bad. When twrp updated I didn't notice wipe internal as I usually wipe all but USB in bottom but it was too late. I had swiped my finger and lost everything. Worse? My computer crashed. So RMA backordered so I bought new s2 for backup. I have to fix before sending back. But its not broken. All asurion does is push files and make sure it boots. They wipe everything. So I did most of the job for them lol. I feel stupid as I've never had a problem in four years. Bam I got too far comfy and forgot the twrp updated and had no idea what was added. I will just find a computer and fix or they will get a wiped device with twrp lol not that I think they will do anything as I've heard far worse but I did it so I'll pay if they mention.

[Q] Someone help me with TriFrorceRom install?

I am on Sprint S4 SPH-L720 4.2.2 updated to MF9 through OTA before rooting.
I rooted using qbking77's method and did a full nandroid backup I had no issues going through either process.
Like probably a lot of people, here's where I get nervous and a little confused.
So am I ready to go and install a Rom or are there steps i'm forgetting?
This is my first time messing with Roms and I don't want to rush it and have been reading this site for days so maybe i'm overthinking it but want to be more safe than sorry.
I've downloaded the TriForceRom 3.0 to my PC and put a copy on my extsd card, ran everything through MD5checker.
Now I watched the video that Unknownforce added at the end of the install notes and it looked easy enough but then in the video when it gets to the the part where you're in recovery mode and going into the advance Wipe menu the guy in the video selects Dalvik, System, Data and Cache and leaves sdcard and usb unchecked (which I get) and then swipes to wipe. But when I go into the Wipe menu it also gives an option for Internal Storage and Preload to wipe, I don't want to make any mistake here and could use some advice. Do I leave them or tick them or am I going about this completely wrong?
I get a nagging feeling that there's something else I need to do before flashing this Rom or any Rom really.
In the Install Instructions it says the Rom comes with AROMA installer, does pop up to prompt you after you choose the zip to install?
If anyone can give me any suggestions or help get me on the right path I really would appreciate it, until then I'll keep reading.
No need to wipe internal storage. That is basically all the stuff you have on your internal SD card. I also always wipe preload, not sure if it matters but I never have any issues. Sounds like you are ready to go so just make sure to do a fresh nandroid then wipe then run the triforce zip. Aroma will ask you options once you start the flash. You can choose what you would like. Since it is your first flash maybe just use the stock flash the first time. Then you can always go back and reflash. When you reflash you can choose modify and the aroma installer will let you change options without wiping the data from the ROM. Give it a shot if you run into problems restore the nan droid. Oh and when I do a nandroid I backup preload also.

Ok, ha that's a relief. Thank you so much for responding, I've got everything backed up so guess I'll dive in, thanks.
Well that was smooth and easy, thanks for the tips.
When I booted up TriForce I had a lit up 4Glte icon in the notification.
Does anyone know if it's just there or am I on 4Glte now, because that would be the first time since I got the phone that it has lit up.
If it is showing 4g you should be on 4g. Run a speed test and see what you get. Glad you got it going.

I cant seem to download anything of the playstore when having TriForce running. I cleared the apps cache and data and removed my Google account and rebooted and re enabled the account and it still hangs and doesnt start the download.
I dont have an issue with it when going back to stock rooted.
I used TB to back up nandroid manager so I could reinstall some apps but I cant figure out how to re install that do I tried re downloading from play store and it lets me go through the process but just sits there instead of downloading.
Any suggestions?
Never mind, I solved this myself. Had to do a battery pull and tada. When in doubt right.
