I've gotten quite accustomed to the Motorola smart actions app. Unfortunately it's not compatible with the new CM11 rom I loaded this week.
What is a suitable replacement?
This is what I want to capture (as an example): silent when plugged in, at night, except for VIP callers.
Tasker. It's a pay app. But it is so much more robust than smart actions. I still use stock and disable smart actions in preference of Tasker.

Llama is a good option

Thanks. I've been thinking about Tasker for a while. It just didn't occur to me it could be used for something this basic as well. So I jumped and got it. Now I have to just get to terms that the next 2 weeks of my life will be consumed with writing and trying recipes
I would also sugest Llama. Not the most user-friendly, but it gets the job done.
Yup, Lama is very good. I started using it instead of SmartActions.

Do you know a simple way in lama to put the phone in silent mode during meeting and come back to the previous seetings after the meeting has ended? I messed around with variables, since it seemed to me I need to set both "start meeting" and "end meeting" events and check what profile was set previously through a variable, but maybe I am overcomplicating things? Smartactions did this much easier...
Is the meeting in your calendar, if so use calendar as a trigger condition for a profile to silence/vibrate. For meetings I usually manually set vibrate mode using the lock screen slider because I don't silent for every meeting.

right, I am more concerned with switching back to the original mode/profile before the meeting started, after the meeting has ended.. I have various profiles, e.g home, office, car, meeting, outside, etc.. I was looking for a way to switch phone silent during meeting on calendar and then revert to what it was prior to the meeting.

I don't use the calendar trigger, but I think you'll need the pair of events.
Assuming you're on work profile before the meeting, trigger a silent profile with the enter event for your meeting, then trigger your work profile with an exit event.
I stopped using SmartActions when I discovered that Llama seemed to handle cellular towers better on this phone.

Automateit is like a beefed up version of SA...not quite as much as taker but it's more user friendly.

my buddy just went from his old blackberry curve(original) to an evo. he is wanting to be able to just hit something and block all texts/emails/notifications after a certain time of the evening and only allow phone calls to come in. he said his old blackberry he could just put it on phone only. is there an app or a setting to do this in one step on our evo's? i was thinking just toggle the network off. i would think that should knock out emails for sure but i don't know about gmail or texts.
not sure about an app but i am certain cynogens mod has a quite time feature that does the same function
Called Bedside (night clock) in market place... its a buck or 2 but worth every penny... does everything you needed
I work off hours and now only get calls/ msg's that i want and no others... the choice is yours

Shameless self plug... Locale plus my Call Filter plugin. Some of the other apps mentioned can do it, but locale does a lot more and has better usability imho.
I believe Tasker can do that but don't quote me on that...

For some reason, my Note has started speaking my text messages. Car mode is off, and no accessibility options are set.
Any ideas how to switch this off?
Thanks,
Dave

There are two car options in fact. One in Androids system settings for text-to-speech and there is another option in vLingo, the Samsung rebranded voice recognition software. They are treated independently. Be sure to (un)check them both accordingly.

Both are unchecked! If I switch on the Vlingo car mode, it reads out simultaneously and separately using a different voice, so it isn't Vlingo causing the problem. I've also tried switching the "standard" one on and off, and all leaving it on with all the options unchecked, but it still reads out the messages!
Thanks anyway!
Regards,
Dave
Ok, I worked it out!
I installed Cluzee the other day, but hadn't got around to play with it - turns out that reading text messages is one of it's functions!

Lol... cool you got it resolved though...

I'm using Tasker to turn off Mobile Data when on Wifi, set my phone in "Work" mode when I get to work (Silent, no Bluetooth), disable PIN lock when I'm at home, disable USB debugging when I'm away from home and reboot every morning.
The greatness of he program is that you can do pretty much anything with it. I currently I use it for 2 main things. I have set up a profile so automatically launches carhome ultra when it detects that I am connected to my cars bluetooth and I have it plugged into a charger. That way when I jump into the car I just have to put it in its holder and plug in the charger and I am good to go.
I also have created a 3 short cuts that have automated my "wifi calling" profile. One shortcut automatically forwards my number to a google voice number The second toggles airplane mode (so I don't kill my battery searching for a signal), activates wifi and logs me into groove ip. The final one automatically unforwards my number.
On my old G2 I also had a profile that launched a screen dimming program and clock/alarm program when it detected my home wifi and ac power. I used my phone as my bedroom clock
Hope this gives you some ideas
I have an NFC tag in my car and when I scan it, turns on Bluetooth, and opens the Assistant app. Then, depending where I am (checks if my Last WiFi connection was my house) it will ask where would I like to go. I say a place and it says ok let's go to %place name% or if I wasn't at home it will prompt me if I want to navigate home

I have in the past to automate tasks but with nfc task launcher I don't need it, of course instead I need nfc tags but it's more convenient for me.
Where to start?!! I currently have 14 profiles and over 25 tasks! I use for all sorts eg:
Sunrise and sunset - Gets these from a yahoo api every day and updates a minimalistic text widget
Sleep mode - Check in and out of Sleepbot, does all the sound etc too and sets a variable which I use for some other profiles that I only want to run when I'm asleep.
Car mode - When I am in the car it sets the ringer, turns vibrate off, sets screen to fully on and opens car home. Also uses the sun info from above and it it is dark outside will run Screen Filter to drop the screen brightness right down.
Car exit - When I leave the car it automatically stores the time and location so I can navigate back to the car (useful if I park somewhere unusual or in a big car park) and another widget keeps the time in case I am on a meter.
Work - Sets the sound when in range of work wifi
Various locations - A few like the gym and badminton club which check in to foursquare, go silent, enable secure lock screen and, when leaving, remind me to turn of my heart rate monitor.
Frost check - Check the weather evey hour at night and if it ever drops below freezing, pops a notification so in the morning I know if I need to allow more time to de-ice the car
Games/Gallery - When a game or the gallery is open it stops the screen from locking which is especially handy when showing photos to people
I also use a lot of these with NFC tags such as the sleep one and car.
And others! I'm always playing around with it and the scenes function allows you to create entire interfaces!
Nice guys.. I gotta start using tags.. where did you buy yours from? havea few links for decently cheap ones? places in canada are either charging rip off prices, or stupidly high shipping

I got them from this seller http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=181025690679&ssPageName=ADME:L:eek:U:GB:3160
I am in the UK but they will ship to Canada. Alternatively, look for similar tags on eBay Canada but make sure to avoid Mifare 1k tags, they don't on the N4
Is it possible to tap two phones together and have one phone initialize hotspot using NFC?
There's a ton of things you can do with Tasker. I'm just using it to change my wallpaper. I've got a different one for sunrise, morning, daytime, sunset, and evening. Additionally, when it rains or the weather is overcast, I've got different wallpapers.
I think one of the best things about Tasker is cell triangulation for location. Basically a rough gps of your location to use all the profiles and settings at different locations and essentially no battery cost as it just pulls data your radio is anyway.
The only downside is your limitations are there because not all apps have plug ins. For example I'd like to setup a task for Rom toolbox to backup apps but that's not possible, I think.

I'm not going to say yes because I haven't done it BUT I'm sure it can, I'm pretty sure the primary function (detecting another nfc device) is built into android so tasker should be able to take that trigger and toggle wifi ap.

I've seen the same and that UI that they knocked up would get me to purchase it... They've made massive amounts and not even bothered to update the UI

Modaco did a good guide to Tasker recently:
http://www.modaco.com/page/news/_/android/android-features/mastering-tasker-1-getting-started-r671
I agree the interface needs work but waiting for that is daft. It's all about automation and once the tasks are created you don't see the app itself very often. It's not pretty but I think that is vastly outweighed by how incredibly powerful it is.

Anyone know what happened to the "Sound Profile" settings?
Where you could set up a different Ringtone/Volume/NotificationTone/Etc based on where you are?
Like a Profile, for Home, another for Office, another for Vibrate/Silent, another for Gym, or whatever you made the profile for..
I can't find it on the Nexus 4.

Definitely not on the stock images.
CM10.1 and others have profiles, or you could use an app like Tasker or Automateit.
Would like to know this to, but not looking for anything to automates the switching process. Would be fine if I could hold the power button then select a different profile.

Did Google do away with profiles? I've been using myTouch for years now, the Nexus 4 is only my 2nd android phone..
There are Sound Profiles feature built into the myTouch... but not the Nexus 4, guess google got rid of it, don't know why, its a really good thing to have.

Google didn't necessarily remove it just never added it in the first place. Your myTouch used HTC's Sense overlay on Android. While it made Android look completely different, it also added extra features not in stock Android. That was probably one of them.

Wish Google's employees that work on Android would read through some of these forums.. A lot of people on here have great ideas that would push Android far beyond other Mobile OS.
Like I would love a Sound Profile feature that would tap into my Google Calender; Setting the Ringer volume based on whats in my calendar.
ie: Work Calender, Turn Ringer off & Turn Vibrate On. Meeting Calendar, Set Ringer Off, Vibrate Off (Set to Silent Basically)
All the sound profile app I've found so far are lacking. Wheres the option to change Ringtones with profile? Soft Ringtone for Home, Loud one for Parties.

CM10.1 can do this, I live on profiles, but if you want to stick with stock Android, I *think* Tasker can do the same.
Just got my new note4 after playing with the iP6, as I do like using multiple devices to have good knowledge on most devices, but here is one issue I ran into. I have the dunkin donuts app installed (easier than carrying a card) and it works great. 3 nights ago a txt from the app came in at 3:35am with a good sale (something I didn't need to wake up to). 2 nights later at 1am another one.
So, I don't want to silence ALL notifications as I have SMS alerts from my datacenter, etc. so I am looking to see is there an app that will silence some apps or services, or specific things based on time/day?
Thanks
I would disable notifications from specific apps permentanrly. You can do that from application manager. You can also configure blocking mode to allow certain numbers (not sure about sms).
Sent from my SM-N910C using XDA Free mobile app
[SOLVED]
I saw that while looking around but it's show notifications, and I didn't realize the show really meant don't notify vs show.
Thanks for the quick and simple fix.
Give Tasker a shot. It might look a bit complicated in the beginning but there are a lot of threads and wiki pages which will help you get going.
