Stolen N7 2013. Sad day... - Nexus 7 (2013) General

So today, I got home. Poof. N7 2013 gone.
Everything else was there! My more valuable PC was still sitting there on the desk!
Kitchen door wide open. No signs of a break in. I do have the bad habit of leaving it unlocked...
Anyway, after checking everything else... surprisingly only the N7 was missing... Only and only the N7 gone.
Quite the subtle thief...
I live with a couple other housemates, and after asking if they had borrowed it, I realised we had an outsider. I doubt it was them any of my housemates, we are good friends from childhood.
Anyway, what am I able to do in order to track it?
In my haste, I did log onto Android Device Manager through Chrome, and pressed the remote Wipe button. I did not want the thief to have access to all my apps, including bank details and other payment apps like PayPal. Other apps like games, I couldn't care less.
I changed all my passwords which I could possibly think of which had apps installed in my N7.
Then it sort of dawned on me... If I remote wiped it... Did I just give the thief a free pass to a new device? Did I just save him the bother of factory resetting the device?
Which meant, I am no longer able to even track it?
Sounds like a genius idea, whoever designed that function... Why would anyone in their right mind decide to remote wipe a device had it not been stolen... Unless you're sitting on the toilet, and did not want the bother of physically tapping the screen...
So... I guess I did the thief a favour...
Please correct me if I'm wrong. Because I would still like to track this mofo, and pass it to the police.

Did you also use the lock function in Android Device Manager? I'm sorry that your tablet was stolen. Have you opened ADM after you wiped the device to check whether it can see your tablet?

Yeah I opened ADM and there has been no contact with it since I discovered the loss. I pushed the lock key before I chose wipe.

Maybe you should pass the message around you that your tablet has been stolen and you want the head of the guy.
Offer 50 bucks to the one who will give some info. This is what the USA did while looking for Osama.
You Know these guys can not keep their mouth shut.
Seem a teen who entered in your house. Big guys would have taken all... Not just a small tablet.

I lost my nexus one :(

I guess I just need to vent this out...
But yeah... lost my nexus one.
Went to cheesecake factory. Took out my phone and played with it. Then... I placed it on the chair and totally forgot about it when I left the restaurant. 10 minutes later I realized I didn't have my nexus one with me ( when I was in the car... ) went back in... and go figure... my phone isn't there anymore. I went to ask the person in the front desk, and she told me she didn't have my phone.
So then... I called my phone... like more than 10 times and no one picked it up... Few hours later, I tried calling again and it went straight to voice mail. I guess that person found out how to turn off the phone ( took the battery out? ) or hard reset it.
Sigh... whoever stole my phone, I hope he/she dies. <^>
FCK!!!
Do you have insurance? Or any of the mobile tracking software on it?
It was probably Steve Jobs. Sorry for your loss.

Thing is, I use a pin ( to access the phone ) so... he wouldn't be able to figure out my pin, meaning... he will not be able to access to my gmail and other things.
And no... no insurance.
However, he WILL have access to my pictures and stuff... though that doesn't really make a diff.
does google concider a login into your gmail account when the phone syncs? If so then you could look at googles logs and see the ip address.
ah that sucks. hope he/she dies guess we lost a nexus one member
I am so sorry for your loss.
I'm sure we're all at risk for something like this happening. Maybe I should reinstall wave secure.
Very sorry for your loss. I've forgotten my blackberry in a restaurant once. left it on a corner edge of the table behind the salt and pepper rack. Never gopt it back.
I got my N1 two days ago and wondering if there are security and tracking software that also has the capability to prevent device reset if N1 is stolen.

[Q] Checking for intrusion

Hi guys,
just came back from a trip in Israel. At Tel Aviv airport the guys at security took and hold there my tablet for "security" reasons. When (if) my tablet will return to me, it would be possible to check if they looked and stole my data (emails, navigation history and so on)?
Thank u for your help
I have no idea if you can do that or not... sorry.
But thats messed up! Remind me to never go to Israel...
Not sure there is any way to check if they copied your files or not but if its not too late you can check the battery usage over the time period they had possession of your property to see whether or not they were using your device for any considerable amount of time that would be required to copy a large chunk of data.
Sent from my A500 using XDA Premium App
Afraid they stole your kiddie-p...?
Just kidding. There is no way to check it. Did you make a backup?
My guess is that they love your shiny toy so much that its never coming back... hope you have insurance and some sort of proof that they confiscated it. Good luck.

I use the drag code, but I think it's not too difficult to overcome it
the drag code is difficult to get rid of... since after few try... got a timed lock.
so unless they know your email and password... I don't think they can open it...
But of course we are speaking about guys not really "computer" wise

Bear in mind, all countries have laws that state they can ORDER you to provide the password. Refuse and some (middle east) WILL lock you up.
A lawyer mate of mine says you have the right to be present when they activate, open, or search you equipment. If they refuse, then you also can refuse the password.
Again, that's mainly western countries..
Best way to keep Hebs, Yank jack-booted thugs or anyone else out would be to encrypt the tablet and have a very long non-word password.
we're going offtopic, I only would to know if there was a way to track tablet's use....
That's a first, been many time abroad including Israel and never been told anything about my electronics. And I normally have a few with me. Only once was I told to turn my pocket PC to prove it worked. Best of luck hope you get it back!

[Q] Re-enabling a Nexus7 that was "remotely disabled" by Google?

So I have kind of an interesting situation. A few weeks ago, I ordered a new Nexus7 8gb for a gift direct from the Google Play store, and shipped via UPS. On the day it was delivered, UPS's tracking showed "Delivered to the front door" however it never made it there. So I called Google Play Support and they had me reply to an e-mail with the words "I consent" to allow them to refund the charge and "remotely disable the device" to make it "unusable as a phone or as a computing device for any purpose".
So I did that and they promptly refunded me, and I placed a new order, which ended up being delivered with no problems. However, yesterday my neighbor knocked on my door with the original shipment in hand, apparently it had been delivered next door, and they were away at the time so they hadn't seen the package until then. Out of curiosity I booted up the tablet fully expecting it to be bricked once I connected it to wifi or at most after I had attached my google account or tried to do anything on the Play Store app. However, it has so far worked flawlessly with no visible restrictions, I even updated all the apps and performed a system update with no issues.
Just to be on the safe, and more honest, side though I sent Google a follow-up e-mail to let them know what happened and that the device had not been disabled. They responded just to say that it "can be disabled at any time from now" and to make sure anything I had on there is backed up.
So my question(s) to you guys are, first has anyone had any experience with this, aka Google remotely disabling the device, and know what actually happens to it? And second, since it appears Google has no desire to collect the hardware back from me, is there any way to bring it back to life after that the disabling action has happened, via a hard-wipe and using custom ROMs ect, or will it be essentially a $200 paperweight?
Thanks!
I think, tho maybe wrong but when they send out the "kill" signal it goes out for limited time so that if the item is not switched on during that period then when it is switched on it could/should be fine.
I may be wrong but past experience with a found iphone would suggest this to be the case.
As for the last bit I would as assume that once killed only google can breathe life back into it.

Ah ok, well if thats the case maybe I should just power it off and wait awhile before attempting to use it, if theres a chance I would be able to avoid their "kill signal" altogether.
I just assumed at the very least they would blacklist the tablet's IMEI/serial immediately, so that even if the device itself wasn't bricked it wouldn't be unable to utilize any of google's services.
Flash a custom ROM and recovery asap I say.
Good on you for being honest and telling Google about what happened. Good karma goes a long way! I'm more surprised though they didn't request you send it back to them.

Yeah, I was surprised too when they didn't respond back with instructions to send it back to them or at least have UPS come pick it up, since it was UPS who was really the one at fault.
It just seems like a waste to me that a shiny new Nexus 7 will now most likely just become trash, which is what led me to ask here if there was anything I could do to save it from an early grave.

I'm not sure how its wrong if I notified them that I recovered the device, and all they said was "it will be disabled soon" and made no mention or request to have it sent back to them? Its apparent they don't want or need it back (I'm guessing the costs they'd incur in return shipping, handling, repackaging it, ect. would make it not really worth it for them to try to resell.), so is it wrong I'm trying to get some use out of it?
Also I believe I read that they file a claim with UPS in these instances, so most likely receive some type of reimbursement from UPS to at least mitigate the loss, which is probably another reason they haven't asked me to send it back. *shrug*
@shibbybypass - regarding your offer I'm not sure what I'm gonna do with it yet, probably going to just let it sit awhile and see what happens. But I will keep your offer in mind.

Yes you are
He contacted the vendor, they did not request the unit back. Nothing wrong here.
Now if he didn't contact google, and was trying to get around the kill signal; that's another story. But unless you are calling the OP a liar.. nothing to see here.
Dude what is the status of the device now ???
Is it still working, I have a friend with the same case

We owned computer / networking business in the mid 80s to mid 90s.. what happens is the seller files a claim with ups. they are compensated for there loss. UPS Does not care about the item at that point . UNLESS Google files to ups item has been found. Then ups will ask for it But only Sometimes.Obviously google is not taking this second step.. Im sure this happens more then you would think. UPS Looses alot of packages. they just handle so many more its not so well known..
As far as them killing or locking the device.. Its only for google WALLET And the wallet nfc function. If you unlock lock then re-unlock the device it will have a new nfc id .
Here is how i know the above sentence..
First i bought a 8 gb nexus 7 from play store. (8 was out of stock ). It had bad screen lift. I called google and they said i could it order a 16 then gat a rma for the 8 when the 16 comes.. So the day i got the 16 gb . before i took it out of the box. I called google got the rma for 8 gb. Got the email telling me to disable wallet. I did so.. after i opened the 16 setting it up the screen cracked under (another story i will not get into here) I called google to explain what happened . they told me to send it back and to keep the 8 until i got a replacement for the 16. While setting the 8 gb tablet back up google wallet would NOT Work..
i called google back . they told me to unlock it again . lock it back. Remove it from my wallet account.. Then i could unlock it again and set it up...
this i done. and it worked fine. So it makes me think they do NOT RENDER THE DEVICE DISABLED Only the wallet features..
sorry for. such a long story ..
since you asked them if they wanted it back and they did not . i would say your fine with keeping it.. Keep the emails documenting you contacting them.
Good Luck

Stolen Samsung Galaxy SIII

Hello guys !
15 hours ago I was walking towards my home when three unknown guys jumped on me, beaten me pretty good and then stole my phone. I don't really care about the bruises as I care about my little precious toy (though, I'm happy that I'm alive).
Because I'm such a noob I didn't protect my phone with Cerberus or any other security/tracing app. It didn't even have a lock-screen password (it's pretty useless because the phone can be wiped from recovery).
Guys, please, what do you suggest me to do ? I'd personally try to install a security app from google play store from my PC on my phone but I'm waiting for more oppinions. Have you tried it ?
The police asked for my IMEI code and they are probably trying to trace it by now, but I want to start my own investigation, see if this works.
As a last thing, Android users, PLEASE install tracing software on your phone. It doesn't matter if it costs money, or if it drains a bit of battery here and there. Also, make sure you will always have your IMEI code (mine was only on the box and it was almost worn-off).

Contact your Carrier/Samsung as far as i can remember they have the option to "blacklist" your imei so the thief won't be able to use or resell it without changing the imei but i doubt that the guy has that kind of technical knowledge
All you can do is get the phone imei blocked by network operator. It's too late now to protect anything in the phone or wipe it remotely
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
I reported it stolen to the police and they asked me for the IMEI code so they can obtain a warrant and start to trace my phone. I wouldn't want to add it to that blacklist yet because I don't want the phone to become unusable (missing IMEI) while the police might be trying to get it. That's the only reason that kept me from calling Samsung last night.
Also, I called my carrier, canceled my SIM card and they are probably working with the police (if they got that warrant).
One interesting thing that the officer told me was that if the IMEI code is correct, whenever the thief gets a SIM card in that phone and calls someone, the numbers will pop up at their center and they can start tracking it.
You can track it by logging in to www.samsungdive.com if you set up a Samsung account

wow people are just soo low in todays world.. so few dont work for things they want like the rest of us
There is no need for 3rd-party software for that.
All the S II and S III (and maybe others) devices with a free service from Samsung called Samsung Dive.
Did you by chance take the time to setup Samsung Dive?
If you did, log on to www.samsungdive.com and it will locate your phone, give you log for the last calls, remote wipe, etc.
If you didn't, then too bad: serves you well for not taking the proper measures, even if Samsung tried to help you by giving you free software and service.
I'm not really a fan of Samsung's software. My phone didn't even know how does the stock ROM look like. Unfortunately, no Samsung Dive for me.

Now what the police said is true, they can get him with the IMEI number if he puts a new SIM, locate him and kick his ass.

You must live in a pretty ****ty part of Brazil, because I've lived there most of my life and never had a single phone stolen. And I always have high-end phones AND know how to use them for both safekeeping my private data and the devices themselves.
OTOH, in the 1 year I lived in Ft. Lauderdale (FLA/USA) as an exchange student, I was robbed about once a month, including having my padlock broken in my high school's lockerroom twice. In 37 years living in Brazil, I had a car robbed once in 1996 and that was it.

Motorola find my phone works well.

I had a bit of a panic last night because I thought I'd lost my phone. I walked around the house saying Ok Google now find my phone and nothing. I called it, nothing. I then remembered I'd registered it to the Moto care find phone app. I went to the site, gps said it was indeed in the house, so I set the alarm off.
That sucker was loud! Phone was stuck in the couch.

I've been using "Locate my droid" for a few years on various phones. I've only had to use it once, but it worked like a charm.
I've only had to use a location tracking app once when I thought I lost my phone. I had been at a bank and remembered taking my phone out to check what the date was, got to my car and drove home. Got into my apartment and realized I didn't have it. I went to my car and looked around, couldn't find it.
Went back inside and pulled up Seek Droid (I got it for free on Amazon Free App Of The Day years ago) and started tracking the location. It showed it in a neighborhood near the bank, and I thought for sure I left it there and someone snagged it. I immediately locked it (had a PIN lock but wasn't sure if it was locked or not), and tried to update tracking. It then jumped closer to the bank, to my dad's house (where I was before the bank) and then to my apartment. I waited a few minutes to see if it would settle there and it updated twice saying my apartment.
I triggered the alarm function to help me find it and went back to my car. Thinking maybe I dropped it in on the ground getting out of the car I started looking around the car and could hear the alarm faintly. I opened the car and it got louder, meaning it was in the car. Looked everywhere before finally opening the center console, and there it was. I've never put my phone in there, and still have no idea why I wold have, but I did.
I've since started using Cerberus and like it much better. It has much better features and can be hidden from the app drawer, as well as survive a factory reset. I got it for free as well from App Gratis a while back. I especially like the feature that allows you to take pictures, and trigger photos automatically after several failed unlock attempts. I had suspicions that someone was messing with my phone a few months ago and they were confirmed by getting an email of their face (and failing) to unlock it.
Moral of the story is that you should always have SOMETHING available to locate and/or wipe your phone. The Android Device Manager isn't the best, but it's free for everyone and you should enable it at the very least.

Why does your experience indicate it doesn't do what it's supposed to? I've never actually had to use it in a real situation, but my testing has always been accurate.

Didn't mean to imply that it doesn't work, just mean that it isn't the best one available. Cerberus and other paid apps have more features that make them better, but the functionality of the ADM is fine.
I have Moto Find, Google Find and Cerberus set up on my device at the same time. Can never be too careful
