[Q] i9505 Question - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I just have a quick question, I have the European Unlocked i9505 which is now rooted and has Philz recovery installed, apart from that it is stock (never had cutom rom installed). I want to put it back to 100% stock, so I was going to use triangle away first of all to reset the knox counter, before un-rooting.
My question is once I have reset the counter, when using Kies to update the phone, do I have to un-root and install stock recovery prior to doing an update through Kies or will the Kies update and reset everything automatically, i.e. will it install stock recovery and remove Root on its own..?
Kies is already saying there is an update ready for the phone, but I don't want to anything until I've checked first..?
Cheers for any advice

Check for your Knox counter in download mode. If it is tripped then you wont get OTA or Kies updates. If u want to get on full stock with stock recovery then u ll hav to flash official firmware from samfirmware through Odin. And last upto my knowledge Triangle away wont reset your Knox counter.

Hi,
I'm confused then, because Kies says that there is an update when the phone is connected via usb..?
In download mode the phone says:
Product Name: i9505
Current Binary: Custom
System Status: Custom
Knox Kernal Lock: 0x0
Knox Warranty Void: 0x1
CSB-CONFIG-LSB: 0x30
Write Protection: Enable
eMMC Burst Mode: Enabled
And Triangle Away reports 'Current Status' as:
Counter: 5
Binary: Custom
Device: GT-i9505
System: Modified
So, surely Keis shouldn't offer an update because KNOX Void Warranty 0×1 and System is Modified or am I missing something..??

Main Mic Not Working
I'm having a problem with my i9505.
I think my main mic is not working anymore because people can't hear me on regular call but when I switch it to speaker mode the second mic works fine.
I've flashed and reset my phone. And changed the microphone unit including charging port and nothing changed.
what do you suggest me to do?
have you faced such problem with S4?

It is incorrect to say that you won't get an ota with Knox tripped because I had one last week.
Use TA to reset counter then use Odin to flash the latest Stock Rom as identified by Sammoblie. You'll then be official status and the next ota will come automatically

1. If u update ur phone via KIES it update and reset everything less your KNOX. This mean u will have KNOX 0x1 (void warranty) anyway, ur root will dissapear and ur CUSTOM RECOVERY will be replaced for the STOCK RECOVERY
2. If u have rooted ur phone u can install the updates via KIES. You can DOWNLOAD the updates via OTA too, but for install them u have to go STOCK RECOVERY
3. Steps:
- Use Triangle Away and reset ur flash counter for get Official state
- Go to Kies 3 and update ur phone
- Root it and install custom recovery again when finish the process
- Enjoy

This is also an accurate way to upate your phone.
However, I have just reread the OP and you are talking about resetting the Knox Counter. This is not possible at present

Sorry to keep asking questions, I have done Triangle Away now and the counter is 0 and it is official...
So, do I now have to do a 'Full Unroot' using SuperSU before using Kies to update..?
Or is that step not required, shall I just let Keis do its thing and the update will wipe everything including Root and recovery..??
Or is it better to use Odin to flash the I9505XXUEMKF firmware I have downloaded already..?
Basically, I just want the easiest way to get back to stock...
Thanks again

Flash through Odin directly no need to unroot. As you are flashing stock it will automatically clear the root. Just follow the correct steps for flashing. All the best.

All done, flashed back to stock BUT one thing I don't understand is that under Settings/More/About Device/Status it states
that the Device Status is still Custom not Official, why would that be.?? because of Knox Warranty Void being 0x1..??

Might try to Odin over MF9 stock just to see if it lets you get into recovery or somewhere a little further along than download mode only.

Don't do this! Once you have the MJA bootloader installed you should never odin an older firmware unless you want to brick your phone.

Worked for me when I got into a similar situation when I went to 4.3. Kept the 4.3 boot loader, but was at 4.2.2 until I put 4.3 back on.

Unroot Galaxy Note II, Android 4.3

So I have rooted Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.3 and I learned that I can' t update my firmware through OTA update it says "Your device has been modifies yada yada yada" So I searched on internet how to unroot and it says first use flash counter TriangleAway and then full unroot from SuperSu option.
I read that TriangleAway will possibly brick my phone so to be sure I predicted the future with a Magic 8 Ball and received the answer "Yes Definitely". Lol
So I am asking should I really need to use TriangleAway in order to update through OTA? Can't I just full unroot and do the OTA without using TriangleAway?
I know that it will appear the yellow triangle but I think after the update it will go away.
Thank you

Before 1 day i unroot my N7100 using TriangleAway 3.1 . This is not the first time i do this . I was as well on 4.3 rooted with custom rom end recovery.
So don't be afraid - Use TriangleAway3.1 to reset the counter, but after it finish don't let the phone reboot normaly. It will ask you to reboot normal or in download mode.Your choice is Download mode and flash immediately stock 4.3 and you are done. After flash wipe data/factory reset and that's it.

What does it mean "flash immediately stock 4.3"? So should I use odin after TriangleAway? Where to find v3.1 on play store is only v3.26?
you dont need to unr0ot just to reset the fash counter
as long as you have stock recovery , using triangleaway will reset the counter and the option for OTA will be available again
if you dont want to use triangleaway you can always download the rom from sammobile and flash via odin

I've unrooted my s5 before and it wasn't hard. Just flash an unroot pda with Odin. Saves all your data. But I think it will trip the Knox counter, so It'll void your warranty. So I'm not 100% sure if you'll be able to keep your warranty

I have tried the method and everything works.
My device is now unrooted.
No KNOX trip after flash stock rom with odin.
The device status is official too.
Thanks!
Still a bit confused
Confused is my normal state...
In Super User the only options I have are for OTA survival and for temp unroot.
To unroot would I only need to select the temp unroot option then go into the S5's settings and do a factory reset (under the backup/restore selections) or would I temp unroot with superuser, then go into Odin (on my pc) and flash a factory rom?
With the Odin option of doing this,if it is necessary, where can I get the factory rom for Version's S5 for this process?
I just unrooted using SuperSu's full unroot option and wiped cache from the stock recovery and boom. Worked for me.

Thanks klacenas, Where/how did you wipe the cache "from the stock recovery"? Also as an aside... did this cause you to lose any apps or files (photos, music, txt files type stuff) when you did the unrooting?
Sorry to be a pain.

I followed this method and it's worked well.
I did a factory reset because my phone became not stable with time - probably because I froze too many Knox app. or install some app. I shouldn't not - and I was very surprised to constate that my phone was kept rooted.
I don't understand why. A factory reset doesn't reset the kernel at well?
Also I wanted to dd my /data, and for this I needed to umount it. When I booted in recovery mode, adb seemed not to run... I tried Odin mode too but looks the same, adb launched on my PC didn't see my device.
Of course I checked everythings and adb does work well when the phone is fully booted.
The stock recovery doesn't allow to make system/data backup... - no menu items - is this normal?
I cannot flash any custom recovery because I want my Knox remains 0x0.
Thanks for your comments,
gb

Yes with a stock recovery your aren't able to make a complete system backup. And flashing a custom recovery will trip the Knox counter.
I don't deal with ADB, i can't help you with this, sorry.
No, a factory reset doesn't wipe kernel this would be very bad.
You have to delete every Knox app because they might cause reboots to your device.

Hello DarkTimes,
Thank you for your answering.
I don't know if deleting Knox app. cause reboots of device but freezing them for sure does!
For now, Knox doesn't have admin rights and doesn't bother me so I leave it untouched on my device...
I prefer to not attempt to delete them... because my phone seems quite stable after my factory reset...

Did you trip the Knox counter? If you did, there's no way back
The knox was changed, but I wonder how could that be that it was a stock rom?

Did you install TWRP or made any changes in the bootloader.
Once the boot loader has been modified in any way. \it will trip knox.
No. I just reinstalled stock via odin, there was no twrp installation.

why did you have reinstall stock /
if you have reinstall stock that means something was done to your phone, which caused your phone to think knox is tripped.
So what happened that you ned to reflash your phone ?
System crashes with crashes
Are you the original owner of this phone?
If you try to root it or install anything non-Samsung, it will trip knox and there is no turning back.
Flashing Samsung ROMs via Odin won't trip knox....
I'm his first owner. I saw in a post that it is possible to continue using s health if dowgrade to marshmallow and then upgrade via OTA to 7.0. Do you know if it's possible?

I think you just have to add or modify a line in system/build.prop and it will work. For that, you have to be rooted.
Take a look here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/s7-edge/how-to/guide-how-to-s-health-devices-knox-t3543306
Sorted out. I was able to reuse the app by going back to 6.0 via odin, configuring the app and upgrading via OTA to 7.0
