[Q] Email not persistent on my Note 3 - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There was only one thread near what I am experiencing with no solution so apologies now if I am redundant to another thread I don't see!
Background:
Device is Note 3 purchase within this week. Using stock email client at the moment. Configured a new account on my Note 3 to sync to my company email through a third party pop mail server (@mail on pair.com) used for remote access to email.
My Issue:
email I receive on my Note 3 while remote does not persist on the device over time. I presume when I access those emails while at my office computer, the third party server at pair.com deletes them for remote access. Therefor, those emails are not really being downloaded to my device, rather, just displaying what is on the third party server at each sync point. I have a business need to keep remotely accessed email on my device until I choose to remove them. I have gone through every possible setting on my device to no avail. I am not a company admin on the pair.com site so I am not sure what settings are there that drive behavior with respect to my device client. If need be, I do know the site admin.
My question:
Is there something I'm missing here? Has anyone had this requirement for their device and knows how to configure settings to force true email downloads to the device, making them autonomous to the device for managing locally (i.e. Keep / Delete)?
BTW, I will be abandoning the stock client in favor of K-9 for other reasons - will I run into the same problem with K-9 settings/behavior?
Thanks

Are you connected using imap or pop3?

Original Android 2.1 Email Client

For those interested in original client available in "pure" Android 2.1 - here it is!
For me it's much more better than the HTC's one.
PS. God give us root to get rid of all that crappy HTC bloatware
What are the advantages of the original email app over HTC's version?
I like its look and feel, htc's one is too glossy. The same applies to music app.
Just try it yourself,it can be installed in parallel with htc one.

Is there anyway to get the app to delete the original emails off the server?
THANKS!!! it is awsome! Finnaly my emailsending works accross IMAP and TLS. With built in HTC email client it not works.
Np
As for deleting emails - don't know if you're talking about pop or imap. In imap you have to delete mail from trash to get rid of them.
Didn't tested this app with pop3, so don't know if tere is an option to "delete from server after download". But I think that there could be no such option to prevent user from mistakes.
But .... it's source is available via source.android.com... and it can be tuned, or feature can be requested.
Thanks, sorted my mail sending across SSL.
The stock HTC mail app is eating up the memory. After 3 days, I had 30 MB of mail data, and erasing all Accounts did not helped. The 30 MB was still there, so I had to make a Factory Reset. Thanks for this app!!
Thanks for this.
Does this app allow searching of emails, in particular Exchange?
I noticed, or haven't found, the search feature for the HTC Mail app :/
This works great on Legend, nice to see a bit of stock Eclair.

Does not do copy paste though.....

anyone faced same thing?
thank you

I would love to have this feature! I understand WinMob does this on exchange 2007...
I think I overlooked the obvious, pressing the search button!
Didn't give me results for my search, going to look into the number of emails the phone has access to, either copied to phone or on the server. I suspect the string I searched for was too far in the past.
[edit] Shame, only searches sender names and subject line :/
So, i installed this on my incredible and configured it to work with my office exchange account... set it up as push, and it never updated... went into the sync settings and it was in there, but was showing that it wasn't set to auto sync and i couldn't get it to sync from there.. originally when i first set it up, it was able to connect and download my past emails, but nothing after that.. I know i'm in the desire section of the site, so it may just be that ti's not gunna work on my Incredible right now, but i was wondering if root is required to use this?

don't know if i understood you correctly but i can search my exchange 2007 mail from my phone...
just open htc mail app and than press the hardware search button...type what you want to search and that's it...
thanks alot, this is so much better than sense's version, actually so much stock android 2.2 stuff is better than sense i'm thinking of rooting for 2.2
This force closes when I have an email with an attachment in my inbox, really annoying.
Does it require root?
Does this application require root access or can I install it even if the phone is unrooted? Another question -- Does this get me the combined inbox?

Exchange to battery consumer

Hello everyone,
I connect to gmail using Samsung Email client (using exchange, not imap or pop). While it's pushing email to me, it always give this message of connection error whenever I open Email. And when I checked what could be consuming my battery so fast, I found exchange being on top.
Anyone is experiencing this or have any idea?
Cheers
Sent from my GT-P6800 using XDA App
Do you know what version of Exchange Server you're connecting to? Older versions of Exchange had annoying issues with ActiveSync on the Galaxy Tabs, and I always had to delete and re-add the Device Administrators policy to get it to work...
It's google exchange server. I'm not sure what's the version. I never had this problem in my classic tab.
Sent from my GT-P6800 using XDA App
Sorry about that. I forgot you were connecting to GMail.
What error are you getting when you try to sync?
Unable to connect gmail.

[WARNING] [Alert] samsung SPIES on us and READS our emails and passwords!

Warning for everyone who uses the Samsung applications for (at least) email!
If you use the Samsung email application then YOU JUST GAVE SAMSUNG your username(s) and password(s)!
How did I find out about this? Easy, and you can try it too if you know how to run an email server.
I run my own IMAP email server. So I configured email on the phone and then I synchronised my email.
Then I had a look on my server to see what my phone was doing.... and HOLY SHIITAKE! It wasn't my phone's IP address... it was Samsung's IP address195.124.9.34 which is eu025-egress-a.fra.samsungsocialhub.com.
That means your phone logs into Samsung's servers and Samsung's servers log into the email server.
Yes, I'm extremely worried by this. Just think about how many politicians, CEOs, sysadmins, and ordinary people use Samsung's email program! We know Google does this on their own servers but if you use a different IMAP or POP3 server for email then you wouldn't expect Samsung to read over your shoulder!
Is this even legal???
What type of connection did you establish between your IMAP server and the phone? Do you have it set to periodic polling (check every few minutes) or have you set it to "push" mail of some sort.
If the latter one is the case, i believe there is no alternative to letting the samsung server check for new mail and send the notification to your phone when it arrives. Otherwise your phone would have to send/receive your IMAP info all the time and would be battery dead in no time.

It happened during a manual synchronisation. But even if it were periodic, IMAP has an IDLE command. My HTC One S can do this in exactly the same way without using HTC's servers. That is why this is so alarming. You never knew your password would be used by Samsung.
this is one of the most stupidest things i have ever read
whats so special if it goes through samsung's server
your emails are hosted on gmail servers does that mean google spies on us ? maybe maybe not

Don't be so quick on that guys, he's pointing out a legitimate thing.
When you setup an IMAP Server yourself (like [email protected]) and you add it to an IMAP Mail client (like the "mail" app), there should be no reason to contact a third server which has nothing do to with your IMAP server (unless that server adds some functionality, like the push mail i suggested).
CORRECT METHOD
IMAP CLIENT (Has username/PW) --------> IMAP SERVER (any server, checks username/PW, sends mail to client)
SAMSUNGS MAIL METHOD
IMAP CLIENT (Has username/PW) -------> SAMSUNG SERVER (transmits username/PW) -----> IMAP Server (any server, checks username/PW, sends mail to client - or samsung?)
So, i think we should look into this. Not because i don't trust Samsung, but it's an unnecessary step which shouldn't be taken. And it hans over your credentials to a third party, usually without you knowing about it.
thanks for the effort mate.. lol!

Exactly. People can call me stupid or they can not give a sh* about their own privacy, but these are legitimate concerns. I don't care if people who work their boring job and don't have much self worth aren't able to see the worthyness of pointing out this issue, but it does not mean that there is no issue to begin with -- there is, really, there is.
Just imagine the following examples where only private (non-gmail, non-hotmail) servers are being used.
1) You work at Apple. You're a big shot. But you like android more, so you bought a Galaxy. You configure your corporate email account on it. You don't realise all emails, usernames and passwords are being sent via Samsung. The emails include corporate secrets, patents and so forth.
2) You're a Korean dissident emailing in secret using your Galaxy S2 on human rights abuses.
3) You're a Russian diplomat working together with North Korea.
3) You're a politician. You work in the EU on the Digital Rights Assembly.
4) You're a judge and work on copyright and patent cases.
Do I really need to point out the implications of any entity secretly reading these emails?
that should only happen if you use the advanced imap stuff, which i guess is samsung's way to do push for non-push enabled server types.

Thank god i never used samsung email app. And also i never used any chinese app due to sevuriyy reasons.

First: to all who say "what do I care, I'm not a spy, I've got nothing to hide" - you're the stupid sheep who give up your privacy and freedom, who don't care about your rights, who will happily accept invasive "security measures" which destroy people's private life, who will accept any government abuse in the name of "security". If you "don't care" that your email (and others) can be so easily snooped, I guess you will not complain when a bored hacker gets a copy of them and publishes them online, so everyone will see your medical records, your sex life details, your "innocent" flirting with the new secretary at work, etc. Sheep !
There, cooled off a bit now. Ah, and if you say "Google has my emails anyway": yes, they do, but that's a free service which you're paying with your personal details in order to get advertising. If you're holding private/sensitive information there, be wary.
@voidzero: have you tried capturing the traffic sent from the phone ? if you enable SSL for your IMAP server, it should at least trigger a warning about certs being wrong, IMHO. Use Maildroid in the mean time, much better than the Samsung client.
never had the time to check this but I was pretty sure that if not all but most of the 'traffic' that is in "your" phone is going through samsung or whatever the app you are running. Its a privacy issue and probably a serious one, thats why you should be carefull on what you use and post with your phone. The ppl who doesnt cares about their privacy, sooner or later they will release they were very wrong, when their information be used againt them.
It's probably Samsung's push servers.
I just sent an email stating "Samsung can suck my ****" and my Samsung TV exploded!
Coincidence? I think not.

[Q] configure exchange email

hello
i have encountered the same pb on S3 and now also on the S4. I can not configure the exchange email app. only the mail. how can i do that because it seems to me already that samsung only says that you have exchange email but it doesnt work. wtf?!
Mail exchange works perfectly on Sgs3 and now on sgs4... I use it non stop. Ask your administrator of the mail exchange server settings. You do something wrong with the settings.

Wow .. now that activesync has expired on gmail I need to reinvent my mail syncing on my new s4.
The way I wanted to go about it is that I let gmail sync calendar and contacts and use the native mail client via imap.
Why not use gmail for mails too .. well because I need to set up my work activesync account too .. and I don't want two apps for mails.
First thing I notice is that when I set up imap access to gmail with the native application I get no push functionality (imap idle). The shortest sync frequency is 5 minutes. This is not good enough.
I am now thinking about using the eMail app from CM10.1 .. which served me well on my old device but I really don't want to loose any of these nifty Samsung features (which I may already have lost because I installed swiftkey from playstore .. don't know yet).
Anyone have some tips for me on how to proceed?

That was for "additions," not legacy users. I'm still using GMail ActiveSync with my N2 and Note 10.1 Does anyone know if it's carried-over based on GMail account or only by individual device? For example, if I got a SGS4 would ActiveSync that's currently working on my N2 continue to work on other phones I swap after that?

Yep .. either switch to outlook.com, use a software that can do imap idle (K9Q i guess .. never really got into that) or do it like i do it right now .. live with the 5 minute delay in the standard email client and do the syncing for calendar, contacts etc. via gmail account.
At least this is my solution for today
Actually I'm using a hacked client from CM10.1 .. to not have to enter the PIN so often. The thing is that all Samsung stuff is lost .. like in-mail translations .. this is quite a pity .. I really hope for a security patched version soon. Oh .. to clarify .. the patch is not for my googlemails of course .. but for the other exchange account I have to set up.

[Q] Anyone been successful setting up an Exchange account?

Has anyone been successful setting up an Exchange Account with their new note 4? I am using the settings I have always used before and I keep getting an authentication error. Even my IT department is baffled. . . .
Yes, try adding a \ to the front of your exchange username. Ie: \[email protected]
Sent from my SM-N910P using XDA Free mobile app
Yeah. . . did that. No success. I have not spend 2 hours with Samsung and my IT department and no one can get this to work. Very strange and very frustrating!
I've been able to add 1 account (a free outlook.com email) with no problems.
I have another (an alma mater university email hosted on Office365.) that failed exactly as you described. Settings were correct. It still failed to authenticate.
I checked to see if it would authenticate my work email, which it worked, but I refused to give it admin privileges because they have onerous PIN requirements. So it never actually downloaded the email, but it did complete the setup process.
Maybe the app is trying to connect on the wrong port? That's the only setting missing from the app.
Ready for Samsung dumbness . . . After 2 hours with Samsung tech support, we finally installed a third party email app that worked fine with our exchange servers. . . Samsung's response. I guess your email is incompatible with our email program. . . that's too bad. . .
No promise to look into it or correct it.
New phone. . .native phone app won't work. . . Even my old Touchpad running cm9 can use this email server. Way to go Sammy!!!!!!
Worked just fine for me. I have the MX record of a private domain name registered with Office365 from Microsoft and mine worked without a hitch. It is all in the way those responsible for the Exchange server set it up. Some require domain specified, some don't require the slash, etc. If they have their autodiscover record set up correctly in DNS all you should need is your email address and password.
I will take it up with my IT department next week, but I find it odd that both Mail Wise and Nine can access the server with no trouble.
Working fine for my hosted Exchange.
Problem solved.
I have Samsung s5 with 4.4.2 that my email works.
And copied the settings to my note 4.

I use MS Office 365 for Small Business and have a private business domain name for both my website & email (same one). It took me a little bit of time but I was able to set it up on the native Samsung email app. On my S3 all I had to do was enter my email address & password and it quickly set up, Note 4 was a little more work. None of my administrator settings have been changed (I'm the administrator) so apparently the native app has had changes made to it.
I will mention that I briefly had a LG 3 and it would not set up my MS Exchange email through its native app. I called LG tech support and they couldn't do it either. Only way I could set it up was through a 3rd part email app K9.
This time I set up my GMail & Yahoo accounts through the native app in addition to the MS Exchange account whereas on my S3 I was using the GMail & Yahoo installed apps. Everything works fine.

We had a client with a similar problem with Exchange and LG3. The solution there was to TURN OFF SMS sync. Or to be more exact, setup Exchange with SMS sync off.
Not sure if that same problem exists with the Note 4s, but worth a try.
Are any of you using "push" as your sync setting? I used it on my Note 3 and it worked fine without much battery drain. On my Note 4 Exchange Services never lets the device sleep. Interestingly, my N10.1-2014 just started doing the same thing after a firmware update. I'm trying to figure out if it's something on the device side or server side that may have changed.

Solved my issue.
Sprint Note 4 -- I have 2 Exchange Activesync accounts. Both worked concurrently on my Note 2.
One was already set up and working on my Note 4 without issue. This one is hosted by the MS365 platform. The second account throws the authentication error using the stock email app. This one is hosted by the corporate Outlook.com division. I got it working using Nine in less than a minute.
