4.4.2 - Issues after update? SD Card Write fix? - Nvidia Tegra Note 7

Hi, I just wondered if anyone else is having issues after the Kit Kat update? Maybe we could start a list here.... I'm on the stock recovery and not rooted (and have been since day one). If you add issues, please could you tell everybody whether or not you're rooted etc.
1.Can't write files so MicroSD card using file manager apps (but I can do it if I connect the Note to a PC in MTP mode, then drag and drop files from internal to external storage
2. MC3 doesn't work - this one may bring about the end of civilisation as we know. No really, it might.
3. Stuttering when playing movies over HDMI to a TV (this was present in 4.3 too, but not 4.2.2)
4. Options to use auto-correct, double tap of the space bar etc when a hardware keyboard is connected do not work (this extra menu only appears when your keyboard is connected).
5. Various slow downs and pauses.
6. Battery life, as mentioned by foxxorrrorororors (approximate spelling)
7. GPS - still pretty bad for me, even with GPS Test....
Anybody else got the same, or perhaps other issues?
*UPDATE* I just tried a full factory reset and the microSD card write issue remains. You also can't write files to an external USB drive either. Clearly Nvidia doesn't have a very thorough procedure for testing these updates before pushing them to our devices. Muppets.
**UPDATE** If you are rooted, the tutorial in this thread fixes the write to SD card problem as far as I can tell http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2617921

1. jup, vlc cant access sdcard either - seems they changed something here.
2. na
3. na
4. na, using swiftkey
5. not yet
6. maybe, time will show
7. jup

cars10k, thanks for responding - do you mean MC3 does work for your, or that you haven't tried it? Sorry if I'm being a bit dumb
Writing to Sd card was killed by Samsung in their KitKat update - apparently the permissions are set wrong in platform.xml. I don't know if this is the case for us. I can't even use Helium Backup to write to the MicroSd card. Darn.

yeah my sd cards isnt working either, moving or with es file man. that sucks i use it daily.....

Yeah, I use it daily too. Really frustrating. I'm tempted to cut my nose off to spite my face and just take the tablet back to Currys. There's no point Nvidia throwing out updates with newer versions of android and extra features if they break basic stuff in the process (USB OTG hard drive unmounting being one example of something that was broken by the 4.3 update).

Do you mean like the whole tablet becomes unresponsive at times? You can't even get to the home screen or turn the screen off? Then after anything from 30 second to 2 minutes it just comes alive again? I was experiencing that even before the update - with very few apps installed (same as my Sammy 7.7 which never froze). I've reset to factory and haven't had it again... Yet...

Here's a thread about how to solve the problem of not being able to write to the SD card. You need to root first though unfortunately. On the plus side there's absolutely no reason why Nvidia Shouldn't push a fix out very quickly if they are paying attention.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2617921
After rooting I used ES File Explorer. Before you can do anything, in ES File explorer turn on Root Explorer in the side menu by tapping the button next to that entry, then tap on the Root Explorer text itself to enter the options menu for root access. In the menu that pops up tap "Mount R/W" and press the radio button to mount "/system" as RW, then press ok. After that you can follow the instructions to edit the Platform.xml as laid out in the link above. I used ES File Explorer's in built text editor to do this. After you've made the changes to platform.xml, you to set the correct permissions for the file, again using ES File Explorer (long press platform.xml, press the menu button in the bottom right hand corner, then tap properties) change the permissions to rw-r-r-. That should be it, in theory you can now write files to external storage.

Thank you, thank you. I just spent about 3 hours trying to edit the file, but I couldn't figure out how to get the permissions to do so. That did it.

Google's KitKat is supposed to be restrictive on allowing apps to be installed to sdcard1, but you maybe able to trick installs using symbolic linked folders.

Wiping dalvik cache isn't an option in the stock recovery on Kit Kat. I just looked a few mins ago. Wiping cache is there and I used it, but it still isn't solving the slow booting/loading time.

That's fine, I'm not going bother with rooting, I'm rolling back to stock 4.3. This whole kit kat update left a really sour taste in my mouth and rooting the tablet just to put in a dirty hack to fix it is ugly, IMHO. The fix isn't even guaranteed to solve it completely as others have expressed other issues. At least with 4.3, I know I didn't have much problems with it, and I need my sdcard for hosting files (25GB worth) for an app that putting them in the cloud isn't workable when I can't access them on the road or at places sans wifi.

Agreed. While I think Nvidia have done a great job at pushing out updates in a timely manner, the quality of those updates has been poor. Each time they have added some useful features, they have also either introduced new bugs or failed to fix existing bugs. On the one hand, I want the latest update due to the game mapper functionally and the fact that they fixed the bug regarding unmounting external hard drives (which they introduced in 4.3), but i don't want to have to employ a workaround to use my microSD card or an external hard drive freely. It's such a shame as this device has so much potential. I don't think I'll be buying the next Nvidia device.
To roll back to 4.3 involved installing unsigned drivers on my PC (a real no no) and unlocking the boot loader (which means my warranty is now void). What a stupid end user experience Nvidia and Google have created between them. At a time when I want to move away from rooting my device and flashing custom recoveries and ROMs they are actually making doing so more and more of a necessity. If I'm going to have to keep tinkering with my devices to get them to function in the way I want, then I would like a better OS that does less dodgy stuff with my data and is truly open....

Fingerprint Scanner Workaround for CM7

For those interested in getting the fingerprint scanner working on CM7, authentec's datadefender app gives you a temporary work around.
EDIT: I was not the source of the idea, this was based on a post by t0dbld (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17449229&postcount=8). My only contribution was to find the names of the data files and spell out the instructions.
Datadefender can't enroll new fingerprints under CM7, but you can use existing fingerprint data. Here is a quick overview of what you need to do to get DataDefender working on CM7.
This has been tested moving from stock AT&T Atrix to CM7 Beta.
Steps:
1. Setup Fingerprint Unlock
2. copy fingerprint data files to SD Card
(/data/am2data.db , /data/am2data.db.meta)
3. Install CM7
4. copy data files from SD Card back to /data directory

The data file is according to our fingerprint so unless u want somebody else's print on your phone its best to use your own.
great idea. used it and had it lock go launcher so its as close to locking down initial use as possible.
Before I flash a new ROM, I'd like to know how this affects locking. Presumably CM7 doesn't have a fingerprint lock screen. This was the one feature preventing me from using CM7.
Okay I figured out that you have to use DataDefender. I installed it on stock to see how it works before I install CM7.

I did the same thing but if you hit "cancel" on DataDefender's authentication screen, you can use Go Launcher for a few seconds before it locks again. In those few seconds you can launch any app. That isn't a DataDefender. That's a DataAccessMinorInconvenience. Am I doing something wrong or is there no way to secure the phone with a fingerprint?

you're not doing anything wrong, CM7 just doesn't have official fingerprint support yet. if you absolutely have to have it, then just be patient and use a different ROM, or deal with this workaround.
data defender wasn't designed to replace a lockscreen, it was designed to lock down individual applications. sorry for the inconvenience.

1. Yes, as the title indicates, this is a workaround. There is no fingerprint lock screen yet on CM7, but the devs are working it.
2. Yes, you can cancel out of Data Defender. That does give you a short window of time to launch other apps. However, if you have those apps protected with data defender as well, the potential for compromise is limited.
3. Data Defender is definitely a work around and not a replacement. It does have limitations. If you don't whitelist it with a task killer, you've lost a lot of your security. If you accidentally delete your fingerprint data files or they get corrupted, you have no way to restore them. I'm sure there are some other problems as well. However, until CM7 has the full fingerprint functionality, we'll have to make do with hacks and workarounds.
Thanks for this. Useful as a stopgap while the devs work on implementing it fully!
hmmm having issues moving my am2data files to /data in cm7... ive tried adb pushing them with filesystem remounted to rw, root explorer moving them, and the built in file manager moving them but none of them will make them show up in a file manager or in datadefender.

No, I think the point is, if you wiped before CM7 you only need a friend with stock atrix to generate new data and then copy it over.
You should have done a backup of your stock ROM before you flashed CM7, so you can use unyaffs to extract the files from the backup .iso files. No need to reflash stock then reflash CM7.

I used Root Explorer to copy the files to SD and then back again. I didn't have any issues. The Root Explorer GUI also provides an easy way to verify the the permissions match (provided you've noted the correct permissions before copying the files).
I replaced my fingerprint file, in the directory, and installed DataDefender, and locked down my essential apps and it works for those apps, but when I charge my phone overnight, and try to use it the next morning, it doesn't work; meaning, when the screen comes up to scan my finger, it comes up and goes away and goes straight to verification failed. Only way to fix it is a reboot. Anyone else having that problem? Anyone has any suggestions?
I do not expect much because CM7 is in beta but you never know...

Flash won't rewrite

The flash storage on my nexus 7 seems to not be rewriting like it should, when i pull it up in Windows i can see and delete things from the MTP interface. But when i use a file manager (OI File Manager) i can see the files once more and get an error when i attempt to delete them. i have done the Backup & Reset option within android after attempting a full data reset in ClockworkMod Recovery. At this point i am scratching my head. i am downloading another rom and will flash and post what i get from that.
Anyone else have this strange issue?
I've noticed this as well, anything I delete with ES File Explorer still shows up when it's plugged into my macbook but isn't actually accessible, I'm still on the stock ROM.

Android 4.3 Needs To Bring Back The Default Browser!

I love my new Nexus 7 but the lack of the default Browser is rather painful for me to do without. Does anyone else miss that Browser? The ability to never see the address bar as it frees up screen real estate as well as the Quick Controls, which I find are superior to any browser on Google Play, are the main reasons I want to see this browser back on Android 4.3. I already tried to install BrowserGoogle.apk and it just will not install. I wonder is anyone up to making this work for 4.3?

You can't just install the standard browser like other apk's:
Once you have root, remount /system rw.
Copy the browser.apk I linked before to /system/apps
Rename browserproviderproxy.apk and .odex to something else
Ensure the permissions on browser.apk are 664 (rw-rw-r--)
Reboot
ES file explorer can be used for everything if you're not comfortable doing it from a shell session.

The APK it installs is from 4.0 for the browser and the Flash is from ICS....What difference does it make if the app to install it is for 4.2.2..Almost every single App I have installed from playstore is from 4.2 or bellow....Not to mention Most of these peeps here wont even want to change the name of an app, then place it in a folder, then change its permissions. I'm not talking about the app to install it, I'm talking about the version of browser.apk the app installs. I didn't realise it was the 4.0 version of browser installed, I assumed it would be the version taken from aosp 4.2.2 and would be updated to install the version from 4.3 shortly. Why isn't it installing the latest version of browser available? Only reason I can think of is for compatability maybe?
Similarly, I would always reccomend downloading the latest version of flash directly from the adobe website than using some apk posted on xda, personally. If people can't be bothered and the shortcut methods work fine for them then great! But there's no harm in giving the info on how to do it manually. Knowledge is power!

This is perfect thanks for posting. Sadly I have three websites I use for work that are flash intensive.
So much flaming, so little time.
Take it elsewhere kids. Unless it relates to helping the OP get an AOSP browser, do not post it.
Do you know anything about the AOSP Browser Installer in the Play Store ?
What is this browser ?
I installed it and it took 5 minutes the the device to reboot ... then it seemed to factory reset my device kinda ... all the google apps were older from when I updated recently. Also, every app that had been purchased was gone ... I had to re-install and it gets worse before I could re-install I had to go into the /data/data folder and delete the paid app's folder then it would install ... not sure why this happened it was a pain to do this, is their any tool that could have fixed this ?
Google should have never removed it from these devices on the stock ROMs. Chrome even today is still not as smooth.

I have the same problem in my galaxy S4 after upgrade to 4.4.2. Anyone has a posible solution?
This sounds like a permissions issue that a lot of 3rd party apps are having.
Due to Kitkat's security features only apps that are signed correctly & have the right permissions can use internal/external storge. They are allowed to read but not write. Until the app you want to install is fixed to be usable you won't be able to install it as it needs write permission to install on the sd card....
Simple Fix

I've had this problem, best way to get it working is to:
1 - Ensure app is not saved on SD card
2 - Force Stop app and clear app data
3 - Unmount SD Card
4 - Open Deezer and when prompted to change storage location press 'Yes'
5 - Remount SD card
6 - Bob's Your Uncle.
This works

Great solution. However it doesn't seem to allow you to change the storage location to SD card. Is there a way to change this?

Due to the issues raised previously in this post, I guess not. But at least it gets it working until they fix it! ?

Too right although I don't hold out much hope for a fix as Deezer don't seem to address other bugs in the app..

Nice one how did you wing that?! I'm on the £4.99/month plan which is also pretty good but will probably move to spotify when it runs out. Blinkbox is also great though

[SOLVED]
I decided to try myself and I found the solution, the credit goes for the XDA member "cocolopes".
Follow the procedure he describes here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2537793
He uses ESF Explorer, that´s why permissions are not changed definitively, I used Root Explorer instead, and everything worked perfect, of course you need a rooted phone.
Root explorer:

Help with moving movies from internal storage

After recent system updates my device is sluggish and unbearable to use. I wanted to do factory reset however I have all my movie on the internal storage. I tried moving it to my portable hard drive but ES would not let . is there a way for me to move the movie to my hard drive without root?

Not sure if it'll work, but try connecting shield to your PC.

I had to root to enable it. Although I read somewhere that you can do it on the 1.4 firmware without root.
Set up an FTP server on your computer temporairly then connect withh ES file explorer to that and move them that way. I very much recommend rooting, and using trimmer (root application in the play store) as that makes the device as fast as day 1.

I didn't check as I rooted mine before I ever booted it, but for most devices yes. That being said, rooting isn't what causes it to lose data, it's the fact that you have to unlock the device (fastboot oem unlock), which wipes it for user security on most devices. I would highly suggest backing it up via some method, I like FPT server, or you can probably mount it with the OTG cable. Once rooted, yes, you woid your warenty (for software, if it bricks, most campanies cover it), but then you have the control to fix things yourself. For example, the 1.4 update bricked many devices, so you can manually block updates with root, along with trimming drives to gain speed. Android 4.2 and higher is supposed to trim itself, but it doesn't do it very often if it does, causing slowdown.
Ignore the parts about Mac, but this explains why SSD's slow down, and why trim is important.

We are a little off topic here, so back to the original topic. Try an OTG cable, or moving things via FTP is my suggestion on getting it backed up. BTW, root can be removed if you decide it's not for you.

Yes when you unlock the bootloader it wipes the device, and you need to unlock the bootloader before you can root. Well worth it though does't take that long to set back up in my experience. I'm not sure if Carbon works on the Sheild if so you could back up apps and app data using that.
