[Q] How do I fix these GMail problems? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't know when this started to happen but there is something seriously wrong with GMail.
I couple of things I've noticed but cannot fix are:
1. I have a security cam that sends me pictures when it detects motion. I receive these emails in my inbox and when I open it up, I can see the thumbnails. Then I usually click on a thumbnail and it will open up the full version (about 500k) from which I can pinch to zoom etc. What it used to do is it opens a new "window" which shows the thumbnail with a progress bar below it showing it's downloading. Then when it's finished, it will show a the full version in full screen. What happens now is nothing... the "window" pops up with nothing and then after a while, I'm staring and a completely black screen. I press the back button, then click the thumbnail again, and this time it shows up.
2. What prompted me to write this post is this problem. For the past year or so, I have setup my home phone to send me the voicemails as an email attachment. The attachment can be sent as a WAV or MP3 format. It was set to WAV. When I got the email and see the attachment, I usually just click on it (not save/download it), and it would just popup a dialog and start playing the file on the phone speaker. NOW, all I get when I perform the same action is "No app can open this attachment for viewing." So I changed the setting on my home phone to send MP3 files knowing that I have MP3's on my phone and they play fine in the Google Music Player. But, again, same damn message! So this time I saved the attachment to the sdcard, opened up Music Player which found it, and played fine.
I don't quite understand how GMail could get f'ed up like this. Anyone else having these problems? How do I fix this?
Oh, if this post is in the wrong forum, please let me know.
Thanks.

I just noticed the same behavior as your Problem #2. Our voicemail has been configured to deliver MP3 messages as attachments to our Google Apps For Business Account for about 1 year. Same error message.
Gmail App version 4.7.2 (967015)
Android 4.4.2
Just rolled back to Gmail App version 4.2.2 with the same result

After doing a clean wipe and reinstalling/upgrading apps one by one, I figured out the problem. It has to do with the latest update to Google Play Music. Uninstall the latest update for that crap program and your attachments will play again.

Android 1.0 bugs and glitches

Has anybody else found annoying bugs so far? Here's the ones that I've run into:
- Address Book server sync overwrites changes that you've made from the phone (haven't confirmed this one, might be my fault somehow)
- Multimedia volume slider plays your ringtone once you adjust the volume, but plays it at the volume set in the ringtone slider (not the volume that you're actually adjusting)
- Browser bookmarks list has a lot of trouble keeping site icons straight, it just kind of randomly shuffles them around to the wrong site as you load different bookmarks
- AOL Instant Messenger app shows weird behavior, not sure if it's a bug but it is definitely difficult to use in its current state. Locking the phone prevents messages from showing up, then on unlock they stream in all at once, and if you go too long without checking in on it the program will be terminated but your screen name will not be signed out of AOL's server
- There doesn't appear to be any way to set a vibration for notifications like Text Messages or IMs
- Some apps (MySpace Mobile, specifically) do not account for their process being interrupted when the screen rotates and the current action will be cancelled or the program will freeze.
Overall great phone, I'm really extremely impressed with it as a whole so far. I'm amazed at how fast my internet connection is on EDGE, my old Dash was technically on the exact same connection but took 5 or 10 times longer to load a full web page. Even without 3G the web browsing experience is comparable to using my desktop at home.

ya there is. for example, go to the main Messaging page where it shows all of your threads. Click on Menu > Settings > Vibrate (put a check mark)
same thing with IMs or EMail

Awesome, thank you! Weird that the option isn't available in the same place as setting the vibration function for the phone. Has anybody found solutions to any of these other problems?
Thanks
That fixed it for me. Thanks..its so Funny because Ive been messing around with my phone for 2 days and Just found this answer...Thanks
Android will get it wrong sometimes on sms threads when the sender is not in your contacts.
I noticed yesterday I received an sms from [email protected] and deleted it. Later an sms from +1913XXXXXXX. When I pulled up the my sms folders later, the newer, undeleted sms from the 913 number said it was from @domain.com.
(and the two are in no way related.) I did a reboot and it still displayed the same.

When I plug my G1 into my iMac the computer freezes and I need to do a hard restart. Is anyone else having this issue? My updates are current on my iMac and all of my other phones work without any problems.
when i play music and i turn of the screen, there is a jump every 15 seconds
here's an email bug...
Go to craigslist.org. I wanted to ask a seller a question. When I email from there, it gives me 2 options, to use my pop 3 email account or gmail. If I use gmail, it takes off the craigslist.org extension and replaces it with gmail.com. If i choose to send with my pop 3, it just opens a blank email without the email address. I try to copy and paste the address into the sending field, but it won't let me. I use craigslist a lot, so this is a bit of a pain...
Otherwise, lovin the G1

2 issues with my HD2...anyone else have this?

i LOVe my HD2, but i noticed a few issues that i think can be resolved.
FIrst, when taking video, all it takes is like 5 seconds, then it takes an actual picture and stops recording. It is on video mode, and it is saving to my memory card...cant seem to find out why...
second, in outlook, most of the time i get an email and i have to click "download rest of message". it gets annoying. how can i make it so it downloads the whole messages WITH pictures automatically?
Thanks all...and BTW, i am using Kumars Classic Rom
Regarding the second issue, on the Mail slider touch Menu > Sync Options > Download size limit > Entire Message. You should also check Include file attachments.

GChat on desktop with phone nearby

Has anyone cracked the code on when Google chat on the phone ignores desktop chat and when it doesn't? I have seen that sometimes when I chat with my friends on my desktop, sometimes my phone beeps for every line entered by the other party and sometimes it doesn't. I think in a perfect world, the phone should beep for the "first" line of text, and if I answer on the desktop, it should ignore the rest (but still record them for posterity). And if I answer on the phone, perhaps it should just haptic vibrate for each line of text received after the "first". I say "first" in quotes because I imagine that would be difficult to manage pragmatically. When is it the first chat of a new "session", and when is it just a delay in between chat lines of the same session? Maybe a customizable interval, like say five minutes. If no text is received within five minutes then it is a new session, so beep on the first line?
Lat night I was chatting with a friend (I was on the desktop) and every time he sent something, my phone would beep. Not the best solution in my opinion.
From what I can tell, your phone will receive the message when you do not have the gchat window active on your desktop.
If you click in on the area like you were going to type a message and leave your cursor there, when your friends send messages they don't seem to get sent to the phone. On the other hand, even if you have gchat open on your desktop and you say use a different program or are on a different tab in your browser, then your phone will receive the messages.
At least this is my experience. I think this is the correct behavior as you don't need to get messages in two places when you are actively chatting.
From my experience I use Gchat on my pc everyday when i am at work and I have my phone on my desk near by. When a friend of mine messages me it hits both for the first message, but if i answer on my desktop, it does not hit my phone ever until I sign off of gchat on my pc. Even if it is not focused on the gchat window. I am however using Trillian for my gchat, not sure what you all are using.

This is what happens for me as well. Messages go to my phone on the first IM or if I don't have that window active on my desktop.
I am using the built-into-gmail-dot-com google chat. This has definitely happened to me several times before. Last night it happened again. The entire conversation I had with my friend, every time I received a message on my desktop, my phone also beeped. Other times it worked like it was supposed to (beeped the first time and that was it.)
I will see if I can get my wife to help me troubleshoot tonight.
perhaps a topic for a different thread...
I found the chat behavior to be exactly the way DLarva stated:

My question (perhaps a dumb one ) is how/where to turn off the notification that you got a chat all together?
I don't want any notification of a chat receipt while I am on the phone.
Any help?
Maybe:
Try (within setting of google talk) turn off notification bar, no vibrate, and set ringtone to silent.
That might approximate no notification.

thanks for that - have tried to "approximate" no notification, and that's all well and good. . . but not the same as turning it off.
I have looked around in my mobile settings in the google account but can't find it (thought it might be similar to turning on/off notification of appointments in the calendar)...
might just be missing it, but this seems like fairly simple feature. I am nearing feeling ready to root my phone and thought maybe this would be a feature that was only available after doing that. It would have been the final encouragement I need to take that (admittedly not very big) plunge!
I have a rooted Nexus One (CM6 with KOR) and that is as close as I can get to turning them off (that I can find anyway).
This was happening to me, too (when I used Gtalk on the PC, the phone sitting on my desk would sound the alert, with every chat message I rec'd) -- so I just manually signed out of Gtalk on the phone, and it stopped happening. I mostly use Gtalk on desktop anyway. (Though when I check "running processes" on the Vibrant, I see Gtalk always seems to be running -- must start up automatically -- even though I'm signed out...)
exactly Pevvy -
but signing out of Gmail kinda defeats the purpose of having the phone constantly synched. Guess the same argument could be made as to why you want chats saved/synched... anyhoo - I just don't want chat on my vibrant, period. I don't want them saved (so transcription is turned off in gChat on the desktop) and I would never chat from the phone. OK, never say never, but I would rather have to enable that, rather than always having it running using resources.
When I root that would a fun thing to explore to see if it can be deactivated through some custom start-up (so it doesn't show as a running service - I see the same thing) and only starts if I manually start it.
That said, if it is server side associated with the google account (its a hosted domain and that may further change things...) it may not be able to adjust even with root. Interest how this shows the blending/blurring between the net and the synch to the phone - and should data and synch be more push or pull.
Oh, I didn't sign out of Gmail on my phone -- just Gtalk (the chat service)... seems it was keeping me signed in automatically before, and I had to go into the app, and manually sign out.

[Q] Disappearing MMS - Messages not downloading - AOSP Messaging

I originally asked this in Tasks thread because that is my ROM, but it isn't only his ROM as it has happened before on different phones, but always AOSP.
When I have my phone set to auto-retrieve MMS it does the expected behavior unless the MMS doesn't download correctly the first try. Sometimes I miss the message completely if it doesn't download and sometimes it notifies me with "Message not downloaded tap to retry" but when I tap that it takes me to a messaging screen where that MMS is gone. If I set the phone to not auto-retrieve I can try to download multiple times and I will not lose the message.
I know the logical answer is not to have it auto retrieve, but in a group MMS I have to go to each specific contact and hit download on each message which is counter intuitive to the smart phone.
Again, I don't think this is rom specific because I remember it on my S3 happening a time or two when GroupMMS first came to AOSP, but is there any way to make the phone keep the message in messaging if it fails to download? I used to be able to download GOSMS and use it to find them, but on the S4 they are nowhere to be found with any app I've used so far. Sometimes the message when set to not auto retrieve will just sit and say downloading forever and I have to delete it. It is pretty frustrating. I saw something on Google about it where someone had started the issue but it was for Android 2.2 and it wasn't quite the same issue.
If you haven't seen this, try setting to auto retrieve and have someone send you a bunch of mms, see if you get them all. Sometimes I don't even realize I'm missing them, which sucks too.
Anyone else experiencing this? Anyone fixed it?

Do you have any ad blocking software installed such as ad-away or ad-block? If so disable them and see if it works.. These programs I don't know which one exactly were causing this issue on my phone at one time. I disabled them and MMS worked correctly again. I never felt like going in and checking which setting was causing this problem so I just uninstalled them...

I don't. Thanks for that info though. The weird thing is I might even get 9 out of 10 MMS, but randomly one will not download the first try and it just disappears. I'm ok with it not downloading the first try, but if it just disappears and I don't see it I have no idea who it's from or what it was about.
I'm having the same exact problem, OP. I'm rocking a Play Store Galaxy Nexus on AT&T. I miss a lot of group messages and I'm almost ready to switch to an iPhone, or a carrier that does MMS over WiFi.

Don't like the iPhone idea, but I do wonder what else I'm missing. Today I woke up and had 3 text messages showing, but when I clicked the notification I only had one unread. I don't know if it was an incorrect notification or if I lost those sms also. I might download go and leave it on there to see if it helps. So far Handcent hasn't helped. I have it hidden in the background to see if it will catch these. I also got a message that I missed this morning and I'm not sure if it was a resend or if it just randomly came to me, but I got it 4 hours later.

We're definitely losing messages. Sometimes I get a toast messages "Can't download message from Jane Doe" if I catch it at the right time.
Sometimes it also shows up in my notifications preview, "Jane Doe" but I click on it, it takes me to the Group MMS, but then Jane Doe's message isn't in the thread. It shows up in my friends' iPhone threads though. It's like the phone receives it initially, then just throws it out.
Other times if I miss messages, I get a ton of "Hidden Sender Address" in my notification bar. I tap on it, it's blank. I check my friends' threads, and of course there's some messages I miss.
Like you said, the only reliable way to receive these MMS is to turn off auto-retrieve, but then I'm going into each individual's thread and clicking download a many times. If we're all live group chatting, this is a little intense, but I want to be part of the group...

I found this issue awhile ago in the tracker. Pretty much sums it up, but compound it with group MMS. Look how old the dates are...
FYI - I was having issues with Text/Picture Messaging Not Downloading/Sending with AOSP ROMS.
After some heavy duty Googleing and putting the pieces together from numerous posts across different sites this is what I came up with...
Go to: Settings --> Mobile Networks --> Preferred Network Type
Select: CDMA+LTE/EVOD instead of Global and reboot. (I think AOSP ROMS are set to Global for the purpose of being used worldwide.)
Since I did this my picture messaging works perfectly! Be sure to check this each time you change ROMS or update your current installed ROM.

First time using a OnePlus because i heard great things from it. I'm trying to leave everything stock and give it a chance but I'm having trouble with the stock messaging app..Why doesn't it let me attach video files? Also it won't let me send some gifs saying it has exceeded the maximum size. On a side note now that I remember on Hangouts it won't play media when I click on it. I have to download it first and then play it which is annoying. I've searched settings on both messaging and Hangouts no luck.. Any help? I guess I'm just used to everything being automatic on my s9.
