Is it safe to upgrade to NAE? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I currently have Cm 10.2 running on bootloader version MJA. My question, is it safe to upgrade to NAE on cyanogenmod (if the download info even exists yet)? Would i be better off going to a stock TW ROM for NAE?
Thanks.

Download the MK2 100% stock tar. Flash it through Odin, then accept/sideload the NAE OTA!

If you're just talking about the Modem only you should be Okay; but some are having troubles with MJA/MK2 bootloader and NAE modem combo; some are not. Take a look at the CM/AOSP threads; some are doing that now.
There is a WHOLE LOT of discussion about this in these forums, if you want to know more do some searching and reading about that.
If you take the NAE upgarde, whole bootloader, modem, ROM (from MJA/MK2) do know that you cannot go back to MK2 bootloader! Much like you can't go back to MF9 if you're on the MK2 bootloader

MJA update without bootloader

I am trying to decide whether or not it is worth the effort to update to MJA without updating the bootloader per http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2277480. I am now running 4.2.2 pretty much stock with root. I would like to run the same way on MJA, but don't want to have the wifi problem and would like the option of running stock kernel. I have not been able to find what is causing the wifi problem. Are people taking the OTA experiencing the wifi problem? If I were to install the update as described in the link above without the KT kernel, what is the difference between that and the OTA, other than the bootloader? Why would it experience the wifi problem and not the OTA?
From what I have read you should be fine. I am trying to make the same decision. I'm basically stock mf9 rooted and tweaked.
My understanding is that we could Odin the mja with root and be like we are currently with all the new goodness. The disadvantage, if it is one, is that we could not go back to a mf9 rom due to now having the mja bootloader. I am trying to wait for one of these amazing devs to get a tar or zip together that would be a one flash setup allowing us have all of the new stuff minus the mja bootloader. I don't think I would ever go backwards but I don't want to destroy that option. I probably won't be able to wait much longer and wind up jumping through all the hoops to get the mja modem, 4.3, and keep the mf9 bootloader.
I am in no way a developer and please someone correct me if I am mistaken. I hope this helps you in some way.

I just did what you're thinking about doing and my experience has been great. I have the full MJA with out the bootloader. The phone runs stable and fast. No Wifi issues, LTE works, and clear phone calls.
It was more time-consuming than flashing a tar but I'm liking MJA a lot right now.

The KT kernel with the wifi fix. I didn't mess with the KTweaker settings.
I'm currently running MDC rooted stock with stock kernal. if i update using the thread posted by the OP. Will i be using MJA or MF9 bootloader...i've read throught the instructions and don't see anything about flashing the MF9 bootloader, or would that be the step which removes Knox

Before I started on the guide, I was on stock, rooted MF9. After the guide, I was MJA everything except the bootloader, which is MF9. As a result, Knox isn't triggered.
Since you're currently on MDC, perhaps you should start by flashing the OEM MF9 tar first through PC Odin.

Android 4.4.2 and MDL bootloader on I337

I have I337 with MDL bootloader. Omega 19 (4.3), MK2 GSM modem and MDL LTE modem.
New Omega 20 based on leaked 4.4.2 come.
I read Omega 20 installation notes than it works only with new 4.4.2 bootloder.
Does this means that the only way to install 4.4.2 is wait i337 4.4.2 stock, flash it and use safe strap.
PS
Is LOKI kernel for 4.4.2 TW available?
Was kinda wondering this myself.
I'm on 4.4.2 GE ROM, I assume just flashing a 4.4 ROM updates your bootloader but strangely I don't see any 4.4 TW ROMs in our Dev section yet?
Was hoping somebody has flashed an Intl 4.4 ROM with loki-doki and all was good.

Flashing a rom only updates the system and kernel. The modem, bootloader, and recovery stay intact. Odin packages contain the bootloader and modem. These are all on separate partitions.
The 4.4.2 released was a i9505 rom and only for them. You can be on an older bootloader and flash newer android version roms but you can't do the opposite and say flash a 2.3 rom while you on a 4.0 rom.
Also most people don't want the permanence of being stuck on a leak release and not being able to go back.

Ahh ok, so I really do still have an MDL bootloader huh (even though I've flashed different modems).
But I can switch from a 4.4 GE/CM ROM to any 4.3 or 4.2.2 if I choose, so what do you mean not being able to go back?

MDL was the second update I believe (right after release) for 4.2.2 before the the lock. Once you update the bootloader on these lock bootloaders (even MDL is locked, just has a loki work around) you can't go back. The bootloaders are going to be locked and you wont be able to flash a Odin .tar and go back. You are on there. YOu can flash 4.4 roms on a 4.2.2 bootloader but not a 4.2 rom on a 4.4 bootloader.
Alrighty, so to answer OP's question.
You should be fine to flash new Omega with a wipe of Cache/Davlik/System/Data followed by loki-doki.

It's true.
I am confused by what I read in the installation Instructions for Omega v20:
Installation:
1. Backup your device (nadroid backup, titanium backup, efs backup ... etc) and save the backup to a safe place.
2. Flash the new bootloder and modems with odin -> I9505XXUFNA1_Bootloader_Modems.tar

[Q] MDL Firmware

Currently have a AT&T S4 rooted with MDL firmware. I have flashed other 4.3 loki roms without any problems (using Goldeneye 20 now). From the reading that I have done on the forums, it is my understanding that certain roms require a newer firmware version, for example, Hyperdrive. Is that a correct statement? If so, will that continue to be the trend with later releases? Can anyone provide any additional information to help me understand this better? Thanks in advance!

For MDL, that does not apply. Basically people with MF3+ phones need to upgrade to 4.3 to have 4.3 ROMs. All you need to do is continue to use loki and never upgrade your bootloaders.

Unless he wants a 4.4.2 rom then he needs the new bootloader....which is locked! so stay away of 4.4.2 for now
Flashing roms (unless stated by OP) will not update your bootloader correct? Since I am one of the lucky ones to have the MDL, I don't want to jeopardize it.

Not true, he can flash a 4.4.2 ROM with the MDL bootloader as long as he gets a loki 4.4.2 kernel. Otherwise the 4.4.2 Google Edition thread wouldn't get much attention

Flashing ROMs will not touch your bootloaders. Just never take any OTA updates to the stock ROM, and never ODIN any firmware except MDL. OTA updates on custom ROMs will only work in some cases (GE doesn't because they're ported from a different model, Hyperdrive will because it has a specialized system).
I'm MDL on 4.2.2, how did you upgrade to 4.3 but keep your MDL?

You can use the StockUp ROM, it's just MK2 with bloat removed and you can even flash the bloat back on if you want.

Interesting yeah, no bloat love here, I've got a metric ton of it frozen with Titanium. I was thinking that the only thing I could try was http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2356276 . I haven't actually flashed any roms yet, only rooted and have twrp. Thank you for the info
I'm on MDL firmware (AT&T) running Hyperdrive RSL13 with KTs kernel. I've had 4.2.2 and 4.4.2 roms on this phone. You can bounce around with no problem. My recovery auto lokis...using shabby penguins recovery.

[Q] What is best way to get back to complete stock?

Hello,
What is the best way to get back to complete stock (including locked bootloader). I'm done with playing with custom ROMs (running CM11 right now). I want stock and guaranteed stability then nightmare dealing with nightlies etc.

I'm guessing you're on an I337 since you mentioned locked bootloader. If I were you I'd just flash a 4.4.2 stock ROM so that you can keep the possibility to use AOSP ROMs like the Google Edition ROMs and others. You can flash the ROM from HERE, use the version that doesn't say wBL at the end. Then just flash one of the 4.4.2 modems in RockRatt's I337 modem thread and it should work just fine. You could even reflash the MDL firmware before all of this to make it clean, or even just freeze the updater and stay on MDL.
If you really want to get rid of all possibility of running more than themed and modded TouchWiz ROMs, you can simply go to the General section, find the NB1 ODIN files, and flash them. If you want root after that, take the OTA to NC1 or sideload it and then use towelroot.

[Q] About to dive into ROMing, have a couple questions

So I've got a Verizon Note 3 running android 4.3 rooted with supersu + busybox, decent amount of samsung bloatware disabled. I am wondering for starters if I were to install safestrap if I can just keep the way it currently is and then use a rom slot for any roms or should I factory wipe the stock slot, install 4.4.2 via odin then root via towelroot and then install safestrap and rom from that or what method should I take? Is it possible to use the ROM slots on the VZN3? I watched a few youtube videos and they were all factory resetting the stock slot and installing it there but I'd love to be able to just keep my current setup as is since it'd be a guranteed fallback. In case this doesnt make sense just respond as to what needs clarification and i'll respond in less than 5 minutes.
You can use only the jelly bean roms while on jb. Follow the instructions to use a kitkat rom in each roms op. You have to odin the kernal. You will retain root if following them. You dont need to use towelroot.
So can i just do a rom slot or do I have to upgrade to kit kat? What do you mean by odin the kernel?
Its really to much to explain… you probably really have to do some read up on odin software and kernels before you attempt to do anything on your phone cause no one is responsible but you… So please google search how to odin or how to flash a unified kernel NC2 or NC4… Nc2 is a older but more versatile kernel of 4.4.2 and Nc4 is the lastest kernel likely the one that your on now go to about phone and look under Baseband Version yours should say NC4 the last 3 character

Seems like saying kernel is unnecessary, isn't this just flashing the .tar or whatever format it is to the phone using odin, i've already done that. I just need to upgrade to NC4? No one is answering the question of whether i can just use the rom slots and keep the stock slot active on MJE.

Once you upgrade to KK your MJE roms won't work so if you have a real love for a particular MJE rom stay on MJE. On KK and the updated safestrap rom slots work but with mixed results, some people have no problems and other roms in slots other than stock have seen performance issues.
You only need the NC2 kernel if you took the NC4 OTA, if you upgrade via this method you don't have to worry about it.

No that can't happen unless there's something huge that I don't know about. They are different firmwares. But if you do the rooted upgrade you can go back if you prefer ME, if you do the OTA there's no going back to MJE.

Both are possible; I did the latter. ROM slots do not work with SS 3.72 and above (the one you will need if you are running kit Kat). You can only flash ROMs to the stock slot, so make a nandroid first!
If you decide to stay on JB and SS 3.71, you can definitely keep a stock ROM in the stock slot and install another ROM on a custom ROM slot. Hope I could help.

Actually since you're on note 3 you may need SS 3.75 if you're going to flash kit Kat Roms. If you have any questions feel free to email me. And yes Hyperdrive is an extremely popular TW ROM. Just make sure whatever android version you are on, flash a compatible ROM.

What do you want to know about Hyperdrive? If you're on NC4 and you want to run Hyperdrive you'll have to flash the NC2 kernel after flashing the rom or it won't boot. Just flash the rom in safestrap and when you're done flashing use safestrap to boot into download mode and flash NC2 kernel in Odin in the AP slot. In all honesty I'd look into flashing @hsbadr unified kk firmware and then you could run any rom in this forum without worrying about flashing the NC2 kernel. I've done it and been able to bounce from rom to rom without any issues....

Here's the link to the post look in Downloads. RE is for retail edition and DE is for Dev Edition. Don't flash the wrong one or you could brick your phone. The unified firmware is flashed in Odin in the AP slot and once you flash it you can jump from rom to rom without worrying about the NC2 kernel but since you're on MJE you'll need to do the KK upgrade before flashing unified firmware. See quote in red at the bottom of the Downloads section!! I don't want you to get the wrong impression as I'm not yelling at you or anything bro, I don't want anyone bricking their device....
