According to Samsung, the Galaxy S III and the Galaxy S III mini are not capable of running KitKat smoothly as both have only 1GB of RAM, which has apparently not been enough to get KitKat working properly on either device. Here’s the official statement
“In order to facilitate an effective upgrade on the Google platform, various hardware performances such as the memory (RAM, ROM, etc.), multi-tasking capabilities, and display must meet certain technical expectations. The Galaxy S3 and S3 mini 3G versions come equipped with 1GB RAM, which does not allow them to effectively support the platform upgrade. As a result of the Galaxy S3 and S3 mini 3G versions’ hardware limitation, they cannot effectively support the platform upgrade while continuing to provide the best consumer experience. Samsung has decided not to roll-out the KitKat upgrade to Galaxy S3 and S3 mini 3G versions, and the KitKat upgrade will be available to the Galaxy S3 LTE version as the device’s 2GB RAM is enough to support the platform upgrade.” – Samsung Mobile UK

This is as official as things can get, and Samsung’s statement confirms our fears of the amount of RAM being the issue. Now, before you say “but KitKat supports 512MB RAM devices and is running on a couple of new Samsung devices with 512MB of RAM already!”, KitKat runs fine with that amount of memory only on stock Android, which does not have any of the added features or bloat that Samsung (and other non-Nexus phones come with.) Also, the newer Samsung devices are running a lighter and newer version of TouchWiz that debuted on the Galaxy S5, which we’re guessing is something Samsung doesn’t want to bring to the Galaxy S III as it would affect sales of its newer devices (and not to mention those low-end devices don’t have all the features that you would find on flagship devices.)
In any case, it looks like Android 4.3 is the last update the Galaxy S III will get (and Android 4.2 on the S III mini), and the official statement should finally put the matter to rest. The Galaxy S III had a good run, going from Android 4.0 to Android 4.3 since launch, but it looks like Samsung won’t be extending any further update love to one of its best-selling smartphones.

I definitely think it will happen, but you never know until it happens. I don't know why you "dream" about it, is it nice to have the newer Android officially from Samsung, yes, but is it that much better than 4.3, no. Don't get me wrong though, I would love to see it coming to my S3, but when it doesn't, no biggie!
4.1.2 is faster and smoother than 4.3,that's why I would like to have a change. I can't stay with 4.3 for long.
I'm sure that samsung will release it. 3.5 months are left before Galaxy S3 will get 2 years old and that's a pretty big number. It's not possible that Samsung will keep us empty all this months.

With problems Samsung had in releasing 4.3, it should be sometime before they release 4.4.X.... But when it comes I think it should be very good since KK is optimized for 512MB rams..

I think that KK will be much better for S3 than JB4.3 ... reason optimizations for older and slower devices.. and now S3 is just that.
I hope that we will get it... anyway if not... there is Omni rom that work super fast on S3.
w8-ing
I don't think the S3 would receive any attention from Samsung when S5 is around the corner and when the International S4 (i9505)still doesn't have official kitkat.
But then previous Samsung galaxies have at least two major android version upgrades
S1: Eclair Froyo Gingerbread (2.1,2.2,2.3)
S2: Gingerbread Ice cream sandwich jellybean (2.3,4.0,4.1)
And now S3: Ice cream sandwich Jellybean jellybean (4.0,4.1,4.3)
Technically the S3 already has more than the previous models as the 4.3 update naturally incorporates all the features from 4.2, but then all changes between 4.1 and 4.3 are minor so it doesn't really count (and 4.4 is frankly just as lame to be honest).
I have read several articles all over the web that the S3 WILL get the 4.4... it´s even supposed to be sometime in late march. No official confirmation yet but several leaks from within Samsung has been tweeted. These tweets come from reliable sources.
It´s also still a fact that the S3 is still manufactured. This would be worth something, wouldn´t it... even for Samsung?

I can't see Samsung releasing 4.4 for S3, when they're about to release the S5. They'll be hoping they can shift S3 users on the 2 year cycle over to the S5, so they won't be wanting to do anything to prolong the functionality or life of the S3. Expect samsung to cease production of the S3 upon the S5 unveil, but continue S4 production and support. I can imagine they'll push 4.4 to some of their popular older budget and mid-range phones though.

In does say: Updates begin today, Samsung says — it didn't mention on which devices — so stay tuned.
Since the note 3 has already got it, presumably this means that the S4 would follow next. Then, the current mid ranged phones (S4 mini, galaxy mega), after that, last year's flagships (note 2, s3) and finally last year's mid range phones (s3 mini)

Samsung Italy has reportedly confirmed which of the Korean company’s Android devices will receive an Ice Cream Sandwich update, with models such as the Galaxy S II and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 each supposedly in line for a 4.0 upgrade. The Italian arm of the firm listed the GSII and the Tab 10.1, HDBlog claims, along with the Galaxy Note, Galaxy Tab 8.9, Tab 7.7 and Tab 7.0 Plus as all being eligible for a tasty frozen treat. However, don’t expect it any time soon.
According to the report, the updates won’t begin until Q2 2012, potentially six months after Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus goes on sale. Samsung confirmed to us last night at the kick-off of the Galaxy Note European Tour that the oversized smartphone would get Android 4.0, as reported in our Galaxy Note vs Galaxy Nexus hands-on, but said that, since the company had been working closely with Google on ICS, they expected to beat competitors to the market with upgrades for existing devices.
(Source :http://www.slashgear.com/samsung-android-4-0-ics-updates-in-2012-reportedly-detailed-28191699/)
I hope, we won't have to wait that long...
Waiting 6m+ would be a joke in my opinion - the GS2 is the leading current Android phone in performance and sales, for it to take so long to get 4.0 makes the whole platform seem a bit weak seeing as by then we'll presumably be in the midst of hype building for iphone 5 which would a) have new features ics doesn't have and b) copy anything worthwhile from ics.
I don't believe extended Nexus exclusivity does either Google or Samsung any favours at all...
i don't like to wait.
i read somewhere that it wont get 4.0 until after the galaxy s3 is released.
me too think so. Galaxy S got gingerbread update only after S2 released. So.... I doubt it might be the bad wait more news coming soon...
But anyway v will get it wont v.
Or if v need it faster CM will always be there to help us

For me, is the joysticks support. I have so many usb joysticks, but none of them are working right now on GingerBread.
Initially I heard ICS for S2 coming next year only, thats fine looking at time required to test stability but throwing the it in Q2 is ridiculous!

Won't Samsung have had ics to develop the galaxy nexus? If so wouldn't they have been developing the upgrades for their phones, negotiated as part of the deal to make the nexus phone?
I think galaxy S2 will be the first to receive the update before any other device, firstly Samsung and Google worked extremely closely on some of the software aspects of ICS namely the Camera app and the launcher itself, also the Galaxy nexus share some hardware components with the Galaxy S2.
Also lets face it the Galaxy nexus is underwhelming specs-wise except the Screen of course (Even though it's Pentile).
Don't forget that Samsung also want to sell a LOT of their nexus device and making it the only device in their range to have ics makes complete business sense. They've sold lots of sgs2 already, time for the nexus.
I know it may be a little frustrating for us, but as someone has already said, we'll get it much earlier via a leaked ROM.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
Q2 2012? F**k me...
What are people doing with their phones to make them slow and desperately need ICS? Am I missing a free hookers and drugs app?
I agree we will get within weeks of the launch whether it be from Samsung or an AOSP ROM doesn't bother me because the one main gripe I have with AOSP ROM's is the lack of hardware acceleration and the absolutely terrible camera app, Samsung's Touchwiz is hardware accelerated which is why it is so smooth.
It does make perfect business sense to delay ICS for the GS2 but people don't buy the "Google Phone" because of its specifications they buy it because its the "Google Phone" the one advantage of doing this is the quick updates, other than that there are far better devices, the Galaxy Nexus isn't even released yet and its already outclassed by devices such as ours that have been out for over 6 months.
ICS and the screen are the only saving graces of the Galaxy Nexus. needless to say it will still sell extremely well because as I mentioned its the "Google Phone".
Hi.
I saw official launch of mega series on samsung site.
Mega 5.8 and 6.3 are using dual core processor with 1 gb of ram. ( 1.5 gb on gsmarena)
They are launched with 4.2.2.
So by this I can assume that sammy will roll out 4.2.2 for note as well. Though wait will be long.
What's your take on this. Any views?

Hardware is NOT an issue.
Sammobile received news from an insider a few months ago that the Galaxy S2 and the Galaxy Note should both be getting updates to 4.2.2.
Their insider isn't always right though, so this could just be a load of bollocks but still. You never know...
Another faulty update process made with no interest and no real testing at all? Thanks, but no thanks. I'll stick to 4.1.2 after a clean flash, which will surely be the peak for this device in terms of performance/functionality/estability.
But of course will be interesting for the dev community, if we all live enough to see it...
Enviado desde mi GT-N7000 usando Tapatalk 2
While I hope we can get one or two more performance updates (especially regarding the S-Note application!) plus an updated unlock screen, I don't believe the phone needs anything else. My aging N7000 has served me well, especially after a fresh battery replacement.
I doubt that the update will be of any use if it isn't released any time soon. This fall the Note will have been available for 2 years. That's a very long life circle for a phone. Very soon people's Notes will start to die, one after another. And by the time the update will be published there will be hardly any Notes left
Sent from my revived Galaxy Note
4.2 should come for our Note: Galaxy S4 Mini and Galaxy Tab 3 have a dual core proccesor and 1 gb RAM Specs. Samsung sold more than 15 millon of GT N7000 so, its not an unknow phone like the Galaxy Fame or others and they will bring still a lot of support. I guess the 2014 will be the last year of updates for our Note. Dont wait to a major update this year, they first need to finish updating the 4.1.2 to the whole world, then will start the 4.2 updates. You might wait to a November/December leak...
Sorry my bad english
I do not beleive for any future update. SAM forget about his childs after the year. I faced with this already with my Galaxy Tab 10.1. Spec is the same like Note. But last update comes more then year ago, it was 4.0.4
The Note WILL receive Android 4.2.2. It will, however, be the last official update that it'll receive.
There's no date for the update. Samsung will update both the Note II and the S3 before, so when they receive it, we can expect it in about a month or two.

My statement, as you say, is based on history and facts.
First off, SamMobile already confirmed that the Note and the S2 will receive Android 4.2.2, and that it'll be the last official update. Do a simple search and you'll confirm it. They have the track record to back this.
Source: http://www.sammobile.com/2013/03/18...roid-5-0-for-the-galaxy-s-iii-galaxy-note-ii/
Then, this is exactly the same situation that happened with 4.1.1 and 4.1.2.
Rest assured, we'll receive 4.2.2. It'll come after the Note 2 and the S3, and before the Red Sox wins another WS.
Well I hope your right. But sammobile has been wrong many times in the past. Maybe when the dodgers win

well anyway the TW 4.2 isn't particularly good for me. And btw, the smart scroll and those gesture features, are they purely firmware features or they are hardware dependent too? We got the smart scroll in 4.1.2 upgrade, not sure if we'd get the smart scroll this time...

However, SamMobile said some devices will get Android 5.0, while this android build wasn't showed by Google or even leaked. So we dont know if SamMobile's source was saying the truth or not. We dont know if 4.2.2 will be the last update, if will get S4 UI, if will be more faster, we dont know ANYTHING about this. The best thing we can do right now is look at the S3 leaked 4.2.2 firmware, because i think it will be the same rom that could have in our phones. I expect we will have the update (or the leak) in November or December.

Maybe because it's the only country in the world when they bother to play it?
4.1.2 or 4.2.2........It doesn't matter much until and unless samsung stabalizes the update...........they released 4.1.2 update so late...and it was not smooth and performance wise it's so power hungry.
Also the touchwhiz interface is so slow with 4.1.2 update. So samsung must stabalize it before jumping it to 4.2.2
Well note still is a very capable phone. But its true that it has almost served its purpose. Spending time to make its update will need more workforce and distraction from focusing on newer devices. We will also get bore from it soon. But i still am happy to have this device and it was a nice decision to opt for this device. Though it will get the 4.2.2, but not the KLP...

now.note 2 willnot have 4.2..direct 4.3 here is proof
Australian carrier Telstra has received a confirmation that the Samsung Galaxy Note II 4G model will skip Android 4.2.2 and will be updated straight to the 4.3 Jelly Bean. It doesn't seem to be a regional thing either - all Galaxy Note II units might be treated that way.
Here is the official quote from Telstra's support page:
Samsung have elected globally to skip the 4.2.2 update for this device and will instead go to a newer version of Android. No schedule has been provided for this update.
We already know that Samsung Galaxy Note II will live long enough to taste the Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie, so owners shouldn't worry about the Android updates.
Meanwhile, Samsung still manages to keep the upcoming Galaxy Note III under wraps, but a picture taken with it popped up in Picasa yesterday. It hardly gives us much info, but it does confirm the device model number - N9005. This will most probably going to be the Snapdragon 800 version of the phablet with the revamped Exynos 5 powering the N9000 version.
The Note III will be announced on September 4 ahead of IFA in Berlin. It's expected to bring 5.7" 1080p Super AMOLED display and 3GB of RAM.

Oh how truly awful it is for you! You have to wait a little to get an update that most 2012 phones will never even see Officially, must be hearbreaking and truly disappointing that your phone is being supported and getting the very latest and greatest OS version.
I bet the very same people would be complaining if Samsung updated the Note2 to 4.2.2 now and took even longer to update it to 4.3 and 5.0.
By the way, can someone name me one other 2012 Android phone sitting on 4.2.2 other than the Nexus 4? also, please name me one OTHER 2012 Android phone, other than Note2 (plus possibly GS3) and N4 that is confirmed to be getting 4.3?

We only need egl blobs and kernel source from GS3 4.3 to run CM10.2 well (not stable but pretty decent like CM10.1).

Not going to flash even if they release 4.3. I prefer to be on CM. Much more smooth and better battery life.

Agree and disagree with your comment. 100% agree with the smoothness part but sammy 4.1.2 roms with a good stock kernel offer the best battery life (Up to 7hrs screen on time, my record was 6 hrs screen-on time spread over about 1 day)
What a lame excuse for not updating.
Sincerely shame on you Samsung.
I think it's not a surprise. Sammy couldn't give us usable exynos drivers for oasp. So they probably couldn't figure it out themselves. Looks bad anyway. ..

codeworkx n xplodwild (not forgetting other developers) are quite capable to give us 4.3 (which we already have as courtsey of xplodwild..) ...
cm is way btr than sammy roms..
Stupid excuses from Samsung...but why the S2+ can get 4.2.2. .really stupid

CM is not a solution as it is really buggy. Playing games is not even possible
Also it is laggy bcs of its own made drivers. Animation stutters in cm really frustrate me.
Battery life is also another problem

Unfortunately, based on what other brands are doing, we cannot blame so much Samsung. We got last official update few weeks ago for a device which is in the market from beginning of 2011. Of course who bought the device one year after it was in the market (like me!) got a better price but having more or less one year of software support and counting mostly on XDA community to keep the device alive.
We should blame who has promised 18 months of updates but failed to keep their promises (I know HTC for example).
Most of the cases there are not technical reasons not updating devices but just marketing. I would be happy having 24 months as minimum software support.
Correct me if Im wrong but I havent read any on that article that it is official? So why go on rampage blaming Samsung on the statement which might be a fallacy? You will just stress yourself.

Exactly.
It's just that once a rumor (a sensitive one here), starts up, it catches up pretty fast.
there are about 5-6 articles by now about this on various websites, each quoting eachother as references.. XD
Let's just wait because even S3 hasn't received 4.2 yet, and as always Samsung updates the newest first!

I saw something about samsung skip the 4.2 and the 4.3 release directly to s3 and s2, do not ask me where, but I've been looking around, and also already be next to launch a test build for s3

4.3 seems a little far fetched. ....considering the aging of our device .I doubt Samsung will push any further updates for us ...
And its so silly. They said that s2+ will get the update bcuz it has more power than S2 (seems lik a marketing strategy 2 me)...
On tge the latest report it says Samsung owns 47% of all android devices.i think out of those 30% represents S2, S3 & S4 .
S2 still has a very large scale of users , its a shame Samsung is leaving us in the dark..
Well I guess its time to move on to S3 , S4 , N4 or H One ...

But dont blame the Manufacturers too much
Everyone should think back to the Times where Android wasnt there
Symbian times for Example... Updates came pretty Slow BUT they came and where everytime pretty Bugfree and with Really Good Performance and all that
The Update Floods on the Android OS doesnt makes it any Easyer for the Manufacturers nor the Devs i think
Google makes everything very Complicated for everyone, and i am sure that all Manufacturers first gonna bring out the newest versions to the newest Phones
Why ...Pfff Because they Have to keep The NEW things more up to date then the Old .
Well I know other nonnexus android manufacturers are much worse. I'm not even sure the HTC Sensation and Xperia arc of 2011 received 4.1.2 yet.
But seriously samsung can't compare with those manufacturers as they are not as big as samsung.
Samsung should see how apple gives software updates to old phones as apple is the only manufacturer as big as samsung and hence their main competitor.

Here is where you miss the point.
Apple has like what 5 devices to support?
3GS, 4, 4S, 5
Whereas Samsung has a portfolio the size of an Apple Farm.. XD
So they focus on the newer models which is natural, to boost their sales and try to keep up with others.
And while they do, Google keeps launching updates after updates.
One such example is,
Galaxy S Advance, It was supposed to get ICS but by the time it's turn came, ICS was outdated, so Samsung directly gave it GB to JB.
I think we will get our 4.2 update somewhere around my birthday in Nov'13

I think what samsung should instead do is to give the best support for those who paid more for the premium Galaxy S line and note line, otherwise their image will be no better than their mid range and budget phones line.
It's their own fault since the beginning actually. Their flagships so far is S, S2, S3, S4, Note 1 and Note 2. However, each flagship got so many variants. For example, the S4 has 14 variants including the zoom and active according to wikipedia.
Samsung might be able to convince people to buy their product. However, I'm afraid they can't convince people to buy their product for the second time.

Not exactly looking forward whether Samsung will push an update for us but they've got a point there. I think Samsung's not particularly concerned about customer satisfaction which means just like the others said that Samsung's likely to update the newer devices that's still in the market to increase their sales.

It is very quiet around the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2012 edition) has become since the new N8010 Note 10.1 (2014 edition) has come out. Everywhere you read what Tablets receive updates and what not. However, if you read anything about the Galaxy Note 10.1 N8010. Therefore my question: Does he get an update to Android 4.3 and here is a timeline of known. Thanks for the effort taken by you.

Source?
Anyway, our tablet getting 4.3 makes sense since Samsung wants more of their devices to be compatible with their Galaxy Gear. kcrudup said in a thread I made yesterday that our tablet already has Trim, so I'm not sure what significant benefits we really get from 4.3.

I cant believe how laggy Samsung has been with the updates already. My wife's Note 2, still 4.1, my note 10.1, 4.1. My T-Mobile S4 still has the old 4.2 without aps2sd, that every other major network player got months ago. Just ridiculous. Ive since sold my S4, but with Samsung missing entire versions of updates on their hardware, I have to rethink purchasing from them again.

My opinion is that Samsung is the best OEM for updating its phones. Still no where near the Nexus(not even close) far cry better than let's say HTC. Kinda sucks the note 2 still on 4.1.2 but we are said to get 4.3 and I bet you we will get 4.4 and maybe even 4.5/5.0.
My opinion is the note features out weight 4.3. My biggest complaint is that touchwiz looks ugly compared to the s4 which IMO looks awesome. Oh well gotta love the spen. If Nexus were to make a wacom note sized tablet and added support for spen like stylus be all over it. Doubt it though unless Google and Samsung make Google edition note 3. Then again it would probably be 750+ unsubsidized lol

Not so much this time. The HTC One on Sprint and AT&T already got 4.3, and HTC has officially announced that T-Mobile will get it this week.
my guess is december or next year even.
S4 has just received the official 4.3 update today and S3 will be the next in line.. the note2 is expected to get it by December so the note 10.1 will probably get it at the same time or after..

The Google Edition Note 3 is coming on Verizon. It is already on Samsung's site.
The Now 10.1 really should get the update sooner than December. Especially the WiFi edition. It's probably coming pretty soon. Sooner than we expect it.

Okay so it gets an official stock Android ROM (zzzzz) update early ... My bad. I forgot whixh was whoch between all of the editions and Android versions and niche devices ... /embarrassed
I just can't conceive of a reason anyone would want stock Android on a device like the Note 3? Or any Note for that matter? Just get a Nexus? The stylus and software features will be gone! Isn't that what the Note is about?

Hope we get it soon! Or they are loosing their customers... I already was buying Sony Smartwatch 2 because Samsung says nothing when they update (or not) Note 10.1. Gear wont work until we have 4.3 inside our devices. I quess I will wait a week or two and if there is no news about 10.1 and Android 4.3, then I get Sonys Smartwatch2. Samsung should know that we of all need that update as soon as possible to get Gear working. We are keeping our Notes in bags!!! Why the hell Samsung is thinking that people who wear their phones in pockets need so badly Gear that Samsung updates their devices before our huge Notes?? Ridiculous!

Ok first off, those articles are from March and July, before the real name and version of the next release was announced. Second, just because Samsung said that back then, does not mean the official announcement hasn't changed things. I for one could care less. I love my tablet, with or without 4.3 and beyond. On my phone, different story, but I can still wait. Last time I got excited for an update was my atrix 4g and 3 days before Motorola had confirmed it would happen, they changed their mind and cancelled it. So I take news of updates with a grain of salt and a "if it happens, great, if not oh well" attitude.
