[Q] Note 3 Proximity Sensor works even after the call! - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Whenever I make, receive or even check my balance(which had absolutely nothing to do with the sensor), after the call is over proximity sensor still works! :crying:
Gets pretty annoying some time Later, can't work, play games, watch movies just somehow hand comes in front of it and then Sensor detects it and black out the entire screen!
Please if someone knows anything about it, I desperately need their help! Thanks. :good:

Might sound silly, but have you enabled all your Samsung Air/Gesture commands etc? -- also Smart stay/Pause?
If so, disable them.

I absolutely never enable them they're off since I got my phone but the sensor still continues to annoy me!
What should I do to stop it?

there are a few thread for proximity sensors problems... search and you will find some useful information.
but in short, there is probably some dust in front of the proximity sensor.
a temporary fix is to blow some air in the earpiece... but the problem will eventually come back.
I do this once a month.
The other thing you can do is disassemble your phone, clean the proximity sensor lens, maybe add some kind of protection to protect it from dust... and reassemble everything.

Try going to Settings>General>Application manager>All>Phone and clearing data.
If that doesn't help, try doing a factory reset.
Failing that, try availing warranty, or if you are Knox 0x1, try another ROM.

His problem seems to be a software issue and not a hardware one.

I had the exact same problem with my device... and the problem is hardware (dust in front of the proximity sensor)...
I tried everything, including a factory reset, and the only thing that fix it (for now) is to blow some air in the earpiece.
Next step will be to disassemble and clean the sensor manually

A New Development
Before when I call or receive a call from anybody the proximity sensor still worked and turned the screen off even after the call, but now my phone is acting even more weird!
After the call the headphone jack is also not working!
Desperately need assistance guys, pls help!

Hello,a week ago my proximity sensor started making bizarre things. The screen stayed black after calls etc etc. I went to Samsung in Greece and they changed the sensor.I had the phone back after 4 days...4 difficult days because I am in love with my phone but now everything is working fine. I saw a lot of threads in forums about proximity sensor problems on this phone...too bad!

But I can't send my phone to Samsung because I rooted it and that triggered Knox warranty so I probably need some other way!
If anybody knows anything please help!

Well, you could just disable the proximity sensor and turn the screen off manually by pressing power.
Phone --> Call Settings --> Turn off screen during calls.
Not ideal, but at least you can still use your phone.

Try what he says! if this do not work then, or you have to pay to get your phone fixed or find a way to fix it yourself (buying a new proximity sensor and changing it through the help of videos). The second option will be a pain in the *** and I would never try it as I am not sure if it could go well.

Absolutly same problem i gotta
my proximity senzor is still little red Everything works fine. Like test or calls but is still slightly red. When i restart phone is black but after first call is slightly red and turn black only after restart.. but works fine. Any solution?

[Q] Proximity Sensor Problems

My proximity sensor just suddenly started to half work. When on a phone call I would cover the sensor with my finger and the screen will shut off. When I move my finger away, the screen won't turn back on. I got into the test menu to test the sensor and notice that the adc reading seems to track my finger fine but once the sensor detect my finger it always stays at "1" (with a green vibrating screen) I am close to restoring my phone back to stock with Odin to see if it will fix it. But if anyone has any other suggestions it would be much appreciated. I have an i337m running stock rooted.

If you have AT&T, you can call their warranty center and they will send you out a refurbished phone. If you let them know that it's a brand new phone and you take care of your devices, and that you shouldn't be given a used phone after such a short period of time, they can also send you a brand new one. They'll include a pre-paid shipping label so you can return the old one once you've transferred everything to the new one.
Screen protectors and covers to close to the sensor would add craziness in the past.

I am in Canada, so I guess I will try to go back to them and see what they can do. After testing the sensor I found out a few things. The proximity sensor will work indoors but when I go out doors it doesn't anymore. With that said, when indoor lights are really bright, it also stops working.

I don't have anything covering the sensor what so ever.
In the past, having a case that was next to the proximity sensor was enough to illicit some odd behavior. If you have any kind of case with a lip, you should test without it on

I do have a case but it's the original Samsung protective cover case.
But have you tested the prox sensor without the case?
You have not confirmed that either way. If you want to exchange go ahead, but if it were me I would test everything I could first before I go to all the trouble of an exchange to find the problem persists.

Also, look into turning off the gesture and any in pocket detection to see if that makes a difference.

Hi, yes I did test without the case as well and all my gestures are off except smart stay (which I turned off to test as well) I actually went to a shop around here that had two live S4s on demo. I went into that test menu *#0*# and looked at their proximity adc values. Both display models were nearly identical in values.... (would start from 2 onward to 255 when fully covered) as mine idles at 46+ when not covered. To me, it just looks like my sensor lost its calibration, but I don't think there is a way to calibrate it. I looked through the build prop.. even tried this through the terminal :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2045569&page=2
Still no luck. I think I am going to reach out to Samsung as I found a walk in service depot near my area. This issue only really started the last few days...and it is driving me nuts

Thanks for confirming... I know these were simplistic suggestions, but some phones in the past had really touchy sensors if anything was even nearby. Hopefully you will have good luck at the service center. I didn't know Samsung even had walk in centers.

[Q] Need help with screen

Ok so basically I love the g2, but here is my problem, bare with me on this haha, BTW its completely stock n everything as its my 1st Android phone so didn't want to mess with it. So basically I broke my phone screen in January, bought new screen, followed a YouTube tutorial, replaced LCD+touchscreen, no issues super happy, had the odd issue where if I woke screen, would only be on for a second n then go back to sleep, but then upgraded to KitKat through computer software update, still nothing wrong, upgrade fixed the issue with the knock to wake, and then my worst day, smashed the screen again! On good Friday, ok I thought I'll just replace screen again, so I did, but when I put new screen on and tested it, all was well, until I made a phone call, the instant moment I press green call button, screen goes blank and won't come on no matter what, power button don't bring it back on or end the call, but I can hear the other person and they can hear me, had to turn phone completely n back on to be able to use it again, so I though hmmm dodgey screen, but just to be sure it wasn't the phone I put damaged screen back on, and the issue didn't appear, stayed lit up while in my hand, went off next to my ear, back on whole in hand, so I took it to local phone repair shop because I couldn't be bothered going through the hasstle getting refunds etc, they replaced screen, I went and tested it before paying them, guess what, same problem, so what exactly is going on? Has KitKat made the phone not work with a new screen other than the one I upgraded it with? I'm seriously confused and need some bodies help urgently my model is an unlocked lg g2 d802 16gb now I turned it on last week before I took it to be repaired, and it says I have software updates but I didn't bother installing them, is there a chance these could be related to my issue and possibly fix them? Its driving me nuts tbh
Chris
Hey Chris. It seems like your proximity sensor is messed up. I think the new screen you got yourself is worse quality or your damaged the proximity sensor when installing the screen.
Edit:
Please go into your phone app (where you call people) and type the following
3845#*802#
Then go into: HW Device Test and then ALC proximity test. Try testing your proximity sensor with your hand. It should change from far to near when your hand is about 2 inches from your phone. The proximity sensor is located next to the camera.

Ok thank you I will try that, I also thought a damaged sensor but when I put damaged screen back on after having the issue with my new screen it worked just fine, no blank screen when making a call, I retested it before I left it at phone repair shop, still was fine, then picked it up with a new screen and issue came back, I don't get why its been like this, I'm thinking bad quality screen and maybe try scratching the sensor area of the new screen to allow more light in? It may be to dark for it, what exactly do I do if it works fine when using that code, try another screen?
Chris
I doubt it will work when you use that method. It's just to make sure that it's the proximity sensor that's the problem and not some loose connection. And yes, a new screen would be your best bet.
Sent from my LG-D802 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Ok I won't try that method then lol, what if it doesn't work when I use that code, as I said I didn't have the issue with the damaged screen which I tested after having the issue with the replacement screen I'd purchased, so how do I know its not just the screen not allowing the sensor to see? Is there anyway I can reset the sensor to relearn maybe?
Chris
If you follow my steps, nothing bad will happen. It's just a way of troubleshooting the proximity sensor. I still think you should do it.
Sent from my LG-D802 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Ok I've spoken to phone repair shop and they agree it worth a try to see if its the screen or not, I'll let you know on Saturday after I've been and tested it
Chris
I just had this exact same issue.Turns out the inside of the screen was just dirty. I opened it up and took a q-tip to the inside of the screen and it worked perfectly after that. Also check the readings of the light sensor, as it is right next to the proximity sensor, if the screen is the problem it will likely have low readings as well.
Great I'm glad somebody else has encountered this issue, its been driving me nuts lol ok so I dial in the code that's been mentioned and what are the labels in the menu for the proximity and light sensors? I'm thinking its just a crap screen as the broken 1 worked fine after I put it back on after testing new screen, and I reckon the screen the repair shop has used is also ****e quality, but I just want to cancel it all out as I don't have the phone to hand to inspect as they still have it lol is there a picture somebody can post up to show what to not cover when replacing the screen and applying adhesive tape etc? Just so I can show them to make sure they have done it all properly.
Chris
Ok so just to update the problem, I went to the phone shop today, did the test, it was showing near all the time, but the light sensor reading was quite high, 166 or something, but I then tried squeezing the screen, index finger on back and thumb on front, gently squeezed it, and proximity sensor started showing far, and near as I moved my hand over it, but after few seconds, went back to showing near constantly, so I think its the screen not been seated, told the shop to take screen off, give it a good clean and reseat it. This sound good to you guys?
Chris
Anyone?
Bump! I'm only wanting a little extra advice so I don't end up paying more money out for another screen when it could possibly be proximity sensor? I think it was just the screen not seated properly, anybody have an idea or something else to either assure my choice or point me in another direction?
Chris

[Q](cm11) phone app freezes, screen becomes unresponsive

Hi all,
Im at a loss here, I dont know how to move forward with this problem so im asking for help lol XD.
I just gave my nexus 4 to my gf ( just got my opo last week). The phone was running cyanogen mod 11 ( some nightly version between m6 and m7).
So when my phone came in the mail, I dropped her sim in my nexus 4 (witch was working perfectly) and after making a phone call with it, she tells me she thinks the phone app is broken or something...
So I have a look at it and this is what its doing now. When I call someone, as soon as you click call the screen goes black. To bring back the screen you need to click twice on the sleep/wake button on the side ( kinda like if you were closing the phone and re-opening it) just for the screen to show again but none of the buttons work. Well none of the phone app buttons work, I can still click back/home/previous app buttons or slide down the top menu just fine. just cant click any of the number keys, hang up, hit speaker phone or anything related to the phone app. So in order to hang up I have to click home and then use the drop down menu and click hang up under the phone notification.
Before droping her sim card in the phone I did a standard wipe/factory reset on the phone just to give her a clean platform. So since that was already done I've tried updating to a stable ( M9 in this case) release, problem is still there, so I tried to wipe dalvik, cache and done a data wipe/factory reset from the CWM recovery and flashed a fresh cm 11 M9 with gapps and I still have the problem.
Im at a loss at where to begin looking for a fix for this situation, I've looked on the xda and cm forums and ran plenty of google searches for this problem but im coming up empty ...
any help would be greatly appreciated,
regards
Chris
Edit: omg screen protector was interfering with the proximity sensor... Is this a common problem with nexus 4 or could this provblem still be related to my hardware/software ?
(I've never used a screen protector before).

If the screen protector isn't applied carefully, it might interfere easily with the sensors. If you want to check, then download a sensor tester from the play store, and use it to see if the sensor is working without any protector over it.

haha thanks for your reply, I've been trying to solve this issue for a week, been looking on the cm nightly and stable forums and here on xda trough all the posts that sounded closely related to my problem and didn't find anything... as soon as I post a questions 3 minutes later I found the problem.
To test it, I simply peeled the screen protector off and held it there while I made a call and it worked perfectly !! Then I cut out the part that goes over the prox sensor and its perfect again ( looks like crap but works ). Still gonna download that sensor tester ( curiosity XD).
P.S: totally unrelated to this post, I've been reading some of your "how to" posts here on xda, just wanted to say thanks for all the info you have put out there XD.

Hehe No problem
This happened with my co-worker's Nexus 4 (which is now my Nexus 4). She had been complaining about this for like a month, until I actually saw her screen, and that the corner of her screen protector had flapped loose and had a bunch of crud built up underneath it. It was a forehead smacker for me when I realized how obvious the cause/solution was. Not so obvious when I took possession and replaced the screen and had the same problem.

Proximity Sensor issues during phone calls

I've noticed my G6 is having problems with the proximity sensor during a phone call. When I put the phone up to my ear during a call and then remove the phone from my ear (such as at the end of a call) the screen does not turn back on. I need to wake the phone before I can access the phone and then press the END CALL button.
Any ideas?
Thank you.
ETA: I have powercycled the phone.
Did you use glass protector? In my experience, because the protector cover the proximity sensor. So try to replace another one.

I don't have a screen protector, just a case. Sorry, I should have mentioned that.
I just tried removing the case (Tech 21 EVO CHECK) and cleaned around the sensor and still have the issue.
Okay. It appears that my proximity sensor is not "releasing." I just wrote a quick profile in Tasker and it recognizes the proximity sensor is covered but does not recognize it being uncovered.
I contacted LG and their solution is to do an FDR, which I expected them to say. There has to be something other than doing FDR. If others are experiencing the same issue then it's a software issue and not isolated to just my phone. Sure, I could do a FDR, but then I have to set up all my apps, etc again.
Here's the Proximity Sensor on a fresh phone boot:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/TW56YtWTC30YMR3f1
Here's the sensor after waving my hand in front of it:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/AzYs5mKtLGShxyrk2
I've been doing some additional troubleshooting and I'm not entirely convinced this is a hardware issue.
I've owned the phone for three months. I never had any issues until this week. I did purchase the phone used and there is some damage around the speaker housing, which is next to the proximity sensor, but the problem occurs intermittently and as I mentioned, only started this past week.
I have not done an FDR (yet). I did boot into Safe Mode and it did exhibit the same behavior.
I contacted LG and they want me to send the phone to them so they can do repairs.
Sometimes the sensor releases after a few seconds and other times after a few minutes.
Same issue over here
Hello! Did you finally get a solution for this trouble? I'm having the same problem with my lg g6.

Yes. I sold it and got a Pixel 2 XL instead.
Okay. Seriously, no, I never did. I also was never able to find anything online about this and I was never able to find others experiencing the same issue, so I'm glad you replied to my post. I really think it's software related because I did do an FDR and the issue went away after the FDR, but then recurred after a few months. It could be an app that caused the issue, but the problem is, I was just never able to make a determination which app, if any, was the cause.
Solved it!
Hey! Just after I asked you, i tried to enter the lg hidden menu (most of lg smartphones have it) and got to recalibrate the proximity sensor. Now it is working perfectly.
The procedure is the following:
1-Dial *#546368#*870#
2-Device test
3-SAAT
4-AutoTest
5-Click Pass
6-Keep pressed Cal Start and follow intructions.
7-Exit
Hope it will be useful for other g6 users!

Proximity sensor not working after screen replacement.

So I've replaced the phone screen and after that, i cant get the proximity sensor to work correctly. I've tried using the phone with the motherboard not attached to the screen (dumb i know) but i was at least able to verify that the sensor works somewhat. It's like it cant see through the glass.
I'm currently on The "Final" version of Resurrection Remix.
What i've tried:
The app Proximity Sensor Reset/Repair.
The app Proximity Fix.
This terminal code/solution here.
Tried *#*#7769#*#* in the dialer but all it does is clear the dialer and nothing else. Weird, it happens with a good number of other codes too. :/ So basically its an issue in its self I think.
Resetting Cache and Dalvik/ART Cache from TWRP.
I'd settle for having the proximity sensor disable so I can make calls in Snapchat, messenger and the dialer. At least, if I cant fix the calibration :/

There's a tiny rubber grommet over the proximity sensor that probably got lost during repair. I have seen this happen several times on this forum. Usually it's stuck to the old screen.

Oh, wow.. welp... this is probably it then. I am indeed missing that part. however, its lost. I have all the old parts but it's not attached to them :/
This doesn't look like the kinda thing I can get easily. How would I go about getting a new one?

The last guy that posted about this went to the city dump in his small town and found that tiny part. stuck to the screen that he threw out. I was amazed by that. Anyhow, some guys used a coffee straw etc, but from what I remember it never worked right. I can only think of buying a broken 6p from ebay or swappa.com/boneyard but that's a lot of money for a grommet. I'd be searching the carpet or repair area really well first.
