Its not something the user can do. It seems some games, particularly those with huge datafiles, will store them in their android folder on the external card if they detect that the card is there

You can also go to the settings and in Application manager pick "move to sd card". This isn't the perfect solution as somethings seem to need to stay on the internal drive but it's what you got until the other apps are fixed for KK...

Can't comment on KK since I don't have it, but on 4.3 there is an option in application manager to move at least some applications to SD card manually and I did it. If that is not an option in KK, then this is another con against KK and another reason not to upgrade.

According to published info moving apps to ext SDcard in ICS is possible with Gemini App Manager 2.4.5/smile.gif
Thanks for the information. I was wondering which app people were running for moving apps to the SD.
yeah this is def needed, i love this tablet 7
EZ moving apps to SD
The ability to move apps, folders and media files is built into GT2. Use the native My Files app to drag and drop files from internal to external sd card. Move files from the right pane into the External SD card folder in the left pane.
I've used My Files to move files and folders but would that actually work with an app? I would think the app would become unusable or would it even be seen anymore?
I have moved the apk from the data folder into the external SD card and the apps have continued to work fine. Of course some apps should not be moved, ie: those with Widgets.
Well, I'm gonna have try that out. Thanks.

I may be doing something wrong since, despite being rooted, I can't seem to get to the Root directory to access Data/App using the My Files app. Would you mind showing us the steps to do that?
With your suggestion, we have to manually move each app that we install? Kinda tedious.
If so, I'll stick to Link2SD.

Sorry, not the same thing. Moving files from int SD to Ext SD is not the same thing as Apps2SD.
The method list in the OP works for me.
thanks! but the data of the apps, which is the more space that has it can't be moved.
Am I the only one that can't move apks to the external SD?
I tried all of these suggested apps but all of them tell me that there is not enough space...
I've an EMPTY 32Gb SD well partitioned (28gb FAT32 and 1gb Ext3). What's wrong on my tablet? :cyclops:

this does not work and was using v2.5.3 on JB 4.1.1
Stock firmware can't read ext3, u must format your second partition in ext4. Link2sd works, but move only apks data, not all data (u can move an apk of a game but not all 1gb or more...)
Gltosd moves all datas. I use it.
It will be useful if the creator of the script to swap internal/external sd card, will make a p3100 version of his script....

[Q] save apps, movies to ext. sd card?

could and would someone point me in the right direction on how to move apps, how to have things saved i.e. downloaded movies to the external sd card at the point of download,,, it says i can move apps to sd card.. but not the ext... any help would be great. thx
I convert my movies onto my iMac and drag them to my 64gb external
I haven't read up on it as I have a 32gb phone and have plenty of extra memory for my needs. I think only the app can be moved, not data. And not sure how it is done yet until we get the latest OTA. Thought I saw some rom that advertised it--not sure.
Try a search or Google
Well I was able to get the app I wanted to the ext card and was able to change the directory in the app so now the app is on my ext sd card and it saves right to the ext card...I used es file explorer...I tried it a few times then it finally just showed up on my ext card and not on internal....yeah me lol

Anything you have downloaded (files) you can move to the sd card using the built in file manager. Open file manager, internal storage, downloads folder - select the files to move, then tap the menu icon (top right) and pick move or copy, then browse to the destination.
If you are referring to movie downloads from google play or something like that, you may be restricted. I am not sure as i don't download from the play store.

Yeah I was trying to get movies to download right to ext..ie from browser and what not havent figured that one out yet but I was also referring to an app being moved to ext card and saving data directly to ext card which I did figure out so if you have any input on the browser downloading
You say browser - I use chrome and all downloads go into the download folder in internal storage and you can move to sd card. I am not sure what stock browser does.
Yeah I read the recent update allowed you to install apps to your ext SD but I haven't seen the option to either install there and/or move them. Hmmmm

Foldermount is a free app in the play store. Works perfectly. It has you search your Android/data or Android/obb folders and any apps you install from the play store, you can move and mount those directories to your external SD card and it actually works. I have a ton of gameloft games, and everything i mount with this app moves to my 64GB external SD and works perfectly!

Different ways of coding/installing an app with lots of assets

I'll explain my case so it's easier to understand what I'm asking (I'm not an Android developer but I need to know if what I want is possible in Android).
The company I work for would like to be able to create an app that has lots of videos, audios, and other assets. The idea would be to allow users to install this app without having to download it, for 2 reasons:
1. Very big size
2. Target users won't have good internet connection (that's also why the option to stream the videos and audios doesn't work either, they have to be in the device).
I've been thinking about possible ways of doing this, but since I don't know very much about Android development I have a couple questions. Please note that all this has to work with unrooted devices:
1. Is it possible to install an app "manually" in the device? By that I mean without using Google Play, just connect the device to a computer and install the app
2. Is it possible to install an app in an external SD card or USB drive connected to the device?
3. Is there a size limit for apps in Android?
4. Let's say we create the app without the assets (videos, audios, etc) embedded in it. Then we manually copy the assets to the Android device's storage (internal or external). Can we code the app so it asks users where those assets are (for example on their first run of the app) and be able to use them from within the app (let's say play videos or audios with an internal player)
Any advice on this would be highly appreciated!
1. Yes, you just turn on the option to allow installation from unknown sources. I use this all the time to test my apps when I don't have my data cable.
2. I can move my apps data to external SD card but alot of the newer phones are not coming with external cards anymore. I am not sure about USB drives though.
3. Last I read it was 4GB
4. Yes this is possible

Thank you very much for your reply!
Just a question about point 2: can you do that in a non-rooted device? Also, when you talk about "moving" the app to the external SD card, does it mean it has to be installed first in the internal storage of the device and then moved to the external SD card? Or can it be installed directly in the external one?

I agree with you.
Just a note on 2: You cannot install it directly to the SD card. You have to install it on the internal memory first, before you can move it to the SD card.

Either go to setting->apps choose the app you want to move, tap on it, and then tap "move to sd card", or use some app like clean master (it does many other things too)

I use it too! good!
use this app / WAPKInstallManager...
if you are using a custom rom chances are it supports external and internal storage swap which means external sd will be considered internal , you can do that by either an option in settings/storage/storage config and check use internal as external (or something like that) or you can edit build.prop , for gameloft games you can use gl2sd from play store , you'll be able to move the cache to external sd , you can also use directory bind which binds the path of a folder in external sd to a folder that you choose (android/data/ in your case) , afaik link2sd only installs apks in sd card not game cache (external sd storage is slower so i dont advice you to do that for games ) , i hope i helped u

Can't copy or move files on SD card (unrooted)

I can't copy or move (but I can delete or rename) files and folders on / from the SD card (SanDisk 8GB) of my unrooted Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime (SM-G531F) with Android 5.1.1. I still can create, rename or delete files and folders.
I tried with My files and ES File Explorer, then I formatted the card in phone and with SD Formatter.
With my PC I can copy or move files or folders on / from the SD card.
I changed the SD card with one similar from my Asus TF-101 tablet and the same phone problems occur, but the phone SD card works normally in tablet!
Many thanks in advance!

Please don't reset your whole phone, it won't solve the problem anyways.
With the advent of 5.1.1 Google added a new Media Security Protocol. The affect is that any app that doesn't have root securities can not move or copy files between Int and Ext storage, except those they generate.
The good news is that I know of a FREE file manager that can get around the problem by hooking into Androids Storage Access Framework.
One small problem is that the setting turns itself off frequently, so you have to go back in and turn it back on.
The better news is that it's footprint is only a little bit bigger than 'My Files' and it has a massive amount of capabilities and settings which are 100% configurable.
Enough of the suspense, "Ghost Commander"
Good luck, it's not for the weak of mind.
P.S. To get to the switch;
Top right three dot menu
Location
Home
Storage Access Framework
and search out the Mother directory of your Ext card, then select.
Grumpa
I know this is late but i just had this problem on my note 5.
Try installing / SandiskMemoryZone.Apk should let you move pics and files then.
Hit the thinks if this help anyone
