Note 10.1 or note 8.0

I am getting a tablet soon, and I am stuck between the galaxy note 10.1 and the galaxy note 8.0. I want the s pen functionality, but am worried that if I get the note 8 the space to use the s pen will be too small.Equally I'm not sure I want a tablet that is so big and clunky that I won't be able to carry it around at all. I don't like the capacitive buttons on the tab but I do like the dockbar in the is of the galaxy note 8.I like the the multitasking better on note 10.1 as it has more modes.Which do u think I should get?

Mate, this comes down to what you want it for.... We can't make this decision for you.

I like the 10.1 inch screen, it is about the same size as a folder you might crry around if you were at highschool, I wish I had this then. Would've made life easier....
There are lot of students that use this tablet for school.
The pen is a nice feature and I like the larger space to use it however if you aren't going to be using this feature there are a lot of other less expensive alternatives around.
The Note 10.1 runs JB 4.1.2 at the moment which makes it a bit better than the ICS it was launched with. We have been chalked up (supposedly) to get updates to android 5.0 but anything after is uncertain.
I find it a good alround device with both work and play functionality. There are a heap of people complaining about the 1200 X 800 screen but this is actually comparable to most other tablets out there. I have no problem with it...

The resolution on the 10.1 us it's biggest downfall, although it is fine it does look poor sometimes compared to my note 2 or s3.
Without seeing the note 8 I am not sure how functional multiview would be as I would never use it on the s3 or n2 but on the 10.1 it is the main reason for switching it on.
I would imagine that carrying an 8 inch tablet would be just as clunky as carrying a 10 inch in truth.
I am sure whatever you get you will be happy.

I have recently upgraded to the note 10.1 from my trustee tab 8.9. If they did the 8.9 with s pen and mem card slot there is no way I'd of gone for the 10.1. I think the size of the 8.9 is perfect (I am using it now) and nicer to hold when just surfing or Facebook etc. but do like having the note size when using the s pen/multi screen. I have not seen the new 8 inch but think it may feel bit too small for all the good features they have. I'd go for the note 10.1 myself.....

This is a difficult question. It is a matter of tradeoffs. The resolution will definitely look better on the Note 8 running about 40 ppi higher. On the other hand the Note 10.1 has more real estate which is what we buy tablets for. An 8 inch tablet is actually quite a bit larger than a 7 inch tablet so don't use that as a measure. Still you will be fighting the "this is just a bigger phone" feeling.
I initially was all for the Note 8 and thinking it would kill the Note 10.1 because of speed, portability and ppi. It might but so much depends on pricing and how well you can take notes at 8 inches. I recently repurchased a Note 10.1 because I needed a note taking device and can't stand waiting FOR EVER for Samsung to actually release something in the US.
I'd say if you can wait wait. Compare the 2. if the Note 8 comes in around $300 the Note 10.1 will surely come down in price.

what I found ridiculous is the price for the 8, you can easily get a new 10.1 for that and have some change.

I have the nexus7 as well as note 10.1 when I bought this note I really thought it would stay home because the nexus will fit in my smaller purse. I have came to love the 10 inch screen though yes it's quality is lower in resolution. So now I have one in my purse the other under my arm typing this in the van right now waiting at a apt. 8 inch note taking tab will still be a bit to small for true business /school use. Tethered to my phone for blue tooth calling I never get phone out of pocket. Awesome device. I have 32 gb wifi version.

Got the note for phone calls and the 10.1 for everything else...go for both. 8'' is too big for a phone and too small for a tablet!

Like others have said. It is a peraonal decission. That being said, I find that even though 7" tablets are a more managable size for transport and eazier to hold one handed, they feel cropped when Web surfing. Web surfing is the #1 task I perform on my tablet. The 8 and 9" for factors may be that perfect mid line or a combination of the worst of the worst. Until I get a 8.9 in my hands I won't know

I'm pretty confident that unless the price is stupid, I'll be getting it.

I have both the Note 2 and a Note 10.1 and the only complaint for either is the Note 10.1's resolution (which btw was not a complaint until I saw the Note 2). I have tried the Nexus 4 and 7 and found them to be less that either of my Notes.
With that said if you do not already have a Note 10.1 then you should really check out the Nexus 10. It has twice the resolution of the Note 10.1 and essentially the same real estate. What it does not have is the pressure sensitive s-pen or the advantages of TouchWiz. If you need to take notes there are some very good styluses out there.

Where are these good capacitive stylus. I have tried them all. All are crap. Only one usable is jot and it's not so great. If you need handwriting there is only one choice the note . choose your size wisely

I own a intuos 4 professional drawing tablet for my pc. Once you have used one of those for drawing nothing else is good enough.
The jot pro is the best capacitive styles. But only for the first hour of its life. The disk are 6.00 each so I cost 6 dollars a hour to use and scratches your screen / screen protector.

Are there any whispers of an update to the 10.1 this summer? The price for the 10.1 is nice, but I have this feeling I'll regret it in June or August...

The the note is awesome as it is now. Unless you have to have the latest version of the os. If you wanting a pen tablet that can get things done just buy it. The note 8 as talked about above might be worth waiting for if you want a smaller tab. With Samsung there is no truth to updates until you see the message on your machine there is a update. Same with most others.

This: Although Samsung is yet to officially confirm its Android 5.0 schedule, a SamMobile source is claiming to know which phones and tablets will be getting the Key Lime Pie upgrade. I also have tried many styluses including the Jot Classic, the Jot Pro, and many of the rubber and cloth tipped styluses. I have found that some are better than others for some things. I have a very cheap "Mini Suit" that works very well, much better than the Jots for writing (not as well as the s-pen though) and feels very nice when used. I have an "Isound.net" brush stylus that makes painting with it feel more like working with an actual brush. This is why I ask what they want to use the stylus for as it does make a difference.

I had an Intuos 3 and 4. I agree there is nothing like them. With that said setting them up just to do a quick sketch or working away from your studio is a pain with them. Now we have the Note 10.1 and the Note 2 for such things and the software for them is improving daily. I disagree that the Jot is the best capacitive stylus. It is quite unreliable and does not feel like any pen or brush you would use in real life for writing or painting. Let alone the expense.

I'm thinking about it.
This is the 1st Samsung tablet that I've been interested in in quite some time. The glossy plastic finish, relatively low resolution and the high price kept me from even considering the previous Note 10.1. The 2014 Note 10.1 has already addressed 2 out of 3 of those negatives. Price is the last detail I'd need before taking the Note 10.1 2014 seriously.

Let me make my home here, I'll be getting this. Looking for the 64GB version.

Definately getting it, just not sure which version to get. 4G is no big deal to me, so it will all come to CPU/GPU performance between the two versions.

I bought mine back in March and it's the 2nd most expensive gadget that I own... I can't justify buying a new one at the moment. Not a huge fan of the new aesthetics, though; the home button ruins the flush design they had going, and they should have left the front-facing speakers! But the 2014 version's hardware specs are sooo much better, gahhhh! Glad to see that Sammy is also coming out with a 64GB version with expandable memory.
I'll wait one more year or so and see what happens, especially now that Wacom is coming out with their own (highly overpriced) tablets to compete.

The new cpu and gpu is impressive and the screen resolution improved but i just bought my note from about 6 moths and it is expensive and it is performing well ... I may change my note with nexus 10 and may not and i want to know how the new nexus would look like and its specs , only one situation 100% i would change my note which is if it not get updated to 4.3 + the new note 10.1 design i dont like it only its leather back and its sides

Although I really like the new specs and goodies, I just can't get over the home button. And, if our notes get the software and s-pen oriented improvements via updates, then I'll happily keep mine.

It really boils down to price for me. If they don't make the price too high then I will get this, otherwise I'm going with the new nexus 10.

Definitely getting it! The only complain that I had with the current version is the screen resolution (especially if you zoom in to any S-Note files), and the new screen will be perfect for notes, drawing, etc. The new design looks a lot better than the current one (I don't mind the home button and losing speakers to the sides - at least they are not at the bottom or in the back). This definitely looks more refined.

Yes hope they actually relese the 64 gig version this time, the custom sketchbook pro app and screen res make it great for art hard to beat that.

Only had my Note for a few months so no. It works great, I've not been disappointed with performance and resolution. Will hold on for a future model.

I'm leaning toward getting this.. looking to replace my Asus TF201. I like the specs on the Samsung.. but I'm not pulling the trigger until I can play with one and see how I like the feel of it and its screen, audio volume, etc.,..

I held back on buying the 10.1 like 3 months ago so I'm definitely getting this. Just deciding between the Wifi or LTE version and the memory size. I hope the release the 64GB from launch date.

Im getting it as soon as I can find a 3g 32GB model. Hope they release all sizes/variants together. I always wanted the 3g 32GB version of this note, but never found it in stock anywhere...

[Q] Change the Galaxy Tab for a Galaxy Note?

Hi! I'm new at this forum and recently bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 tablet and I'm not really sure what to think of it yet. I was looking for a tablet I could use exceptionally for college purposes: to write essays, to take notes, to browse the web and essentially manage my college life (and of course watching a couple of movies from time to time ). I found the Galaxy Note 10.1 on the internet and fell in love with it, but the Galaxy Tab 3 was on sale on a local store and I read some good reviews about it so I bought it. I found out that it lags so much it becomes irritating and reboots at least once per day. I eventually installed Nova Launcher and the lag almost disapparead but it still happens when I'm browsing the web from time to time, and the reboots still continue , so I may return it or ask for another one. I read a couple threads saying you could root the Tab and use it for note taking too, but I'm not sure about rooting it now, since I will lose my warranty and I need it now because I'm in my first year in college. The display resolution really doesn't bother me that much, of course a better resolution screen wouldn't hurt a thing, but what I really want is something portable and productive so I don't have to carry around my laptop which is very heavy...

I make the same brainstorm in every new gadget i want to buy.
Better performance vs more expensive.
The key is value for money. Your valuation vs you money.
If the Tab doesnt meet your expectations, its has low value for you and turns out to be more expensive in the end comparing to the investment on a Note (2012 is cheap now).
Got a 10.1 and for note taking in meeting, net surfing emails etc its the BEST.
Take my following advice with salt and pepper:
I think you have already made the decision for swap it for a note and need some moral support
So here it is: Go for it

Note 10.1 2012 is not worth to buy, imho. If you really want Note, buy newer one. Samsung hasnt upgraded this device and I have already problems with that. You cannot share SNote files. Apps for smart-devices are nowadays often developed for Android 4.2/4.3 because those give much more opportunities to develope functions in apps. So if you are thinking to keep that device for somentime and buy smart-accessories, you will have problems. But if you are looking a cheap tablet with a pen, notngoing to share SNotes or not going to buy smart-accessories, then you might want to get this tablet. Otherwise, stay away from it!

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (GT-N8000) is the CHOICE!
Don't listen people that you say 2014 is better and blabla...
I should have possibility to compare Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (GT-N8000) and Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 (GT-P6050).
Even the 2014 has better HW, GT-N8000 has more followers and even official Samsung doesn't update GT-N8000 firmware from 4.1.2 to higher one, firmware on 2014 is Android 4.3 (by my oppinion worst Android ever!).:crying: But never mind. When I compare this two devices 2014 had lags, problems with Wi-Fi and even with S-Pen.
Antutu benchmark (after customization ROMS in both devices) show mi score Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (GT-N8000) = 20976 and Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 (P6050) = 31500. Really big difference. :good: But even 2014 is most high-perfomace tablet on the market, I felt GT-N8000 more efective than 2014. Strange, isn't it? But it's only my oppinion.

Thank you so much for all your replies! After reading a lot of reviews I decided to buy the galaxy note 10.1. (2012 version) and so far i'm very happy with it! I hadn't browsed a lot about the android version problem so i didn't know that it was so far late in the android version but in my case i don't find it a very big issue and i'm very happy with it, there is no lag at all (even when running a ton of apps). The only problem that i encountered was changing the wallpaper so it fits perfectly on the screen, because everytime i tried to change it im forced to crop the picture and turns the oicture to a crappy resolution... I was a little afraid since I hated the tab but so far so good. Of course I hope they update it in the future. I've been searching the web about roms and roots but I understood nothing... can someone enlight me or direct me to a topic where it is explained? My note is the gt-n8010. All I need is a shiny new cover for my note and i'm a very happy costumer! And maybe in a few years i will buy the next version

If you want to use any pic for a wallpaper do this:
Install simple image wallpaper live wallpaper. It lets you select sny pic you want for your wall and it works great and is free.

I would prefer N8013 over Tab 3 10.1 because:
More RAM (2GB vs 1GB)
Quad-core CPU (ARM vs X86)
S Pen
100% virtual buttons on the bottom (true tablet operation)
Flash (it does not work with X86 Android)

I prefer the note 10.1 over the tablet.
More functionally and productively.

Help me decide: Note 10.1 or Tab Pro 10.1

I've had a Tab 10.1 since it's introduction in 2011. On an impulse, last Friday I purchased a Note 12.2 from Best Buy. I'm not real thrilled with the 12.2 behemoth. It's too heavy and unwieldy to hold and be comfortable. I'm taking it back. I've decided that 10.1 is the size for me.
So, I'm torn. Should I get the Note 10.1 (2014) or the Tab Pro? I want 32gb not 16gb so I'd have to wait for the Tab Pro version with 32Gb to be released (only the 16gb is being shipped now.)
If I get the Note 10.1 will I be buying older technology? Will it be laggy as some have said? What are the advantages/disadvantages of the Note 10.1 compared to the Tab Pro 10.1?
One thing I do like about the Note 12.2 is that the speakers are LOUD, something I didn't have with the Original Tab. Are the speakers good in the Note 10.1?
(Don't sell me on the pen, I won't use it. I had a Note 2 and now a Note 3 and the pen never comes out.)

Well, if you never use the pen, the tabPro may be for you. However, given the identical price points, the note 10.1 has better specs AND the added value of the spen, it may make the note a better overall value.

We know for sure the N10.1-14 is getting both M-UX and 4.4. Since it's not a "Pro" it probably won't get the additional Pro features which are Hancom Office, 6 months of WebEx, SideSync 3.0, Remote PC, and e-Meeting. You can side load Hancom Office as explained in the apps sub-forum. You can download WebEx yourself so the value's in the six free months. Samsung's announced SideSync 3.0 is going to be free to all Samsung Android device owners. RSUPPORT makes Samsung's remote PC app and you can download it free from Play. So the only Pro "exclusive" is e-Meeting which only works with other Pro devices. So in the end, the N10.1-14 and Tab|Pro 10.1 will/can be almost identical s/w wise.
They are identical h/w wise with the exception being the N10.1-14 has an additional 1GB of RAM. But all the inking and S Pen related stuff you said you don't use probably consumes the extra memory. The N10.1-14 has a menu capacitive button which will probably be carried over in 4.4 so the new task button on the Tab|Pro is the only physical difference. The N10.1-14 with 4.4/M-UX and Tab|Pro 10.1 should perform exactly like the N12 you had because while the display on the latter's bigger the PPI's been reduced so all three are pushing an identical amount of pixels and use identical h/w.
So it comes down to availability and price. With the price being so similar between the N10.1-14 and Tab|Pro 10.1 I think a lot of people will go for the former; especially once the s/w's upgraded. I'd question the volume of Tab|Pro's sold at the iPad prices Samsung's asking so that could affect development support.

Well, the Tab pro only has 2gb of ram compared to 3gb on the Note. The Note will get Kitkat soon. Processors seem to both be 1.9ghz. I'm not really seeing a difference here except for the pen. Personally I don't use the pen either and I also have a Note 3.

Ram is only relevent on having more apps open at the same time which is needed with notes multitasking abilities.
If u dont need the pen go ahead and get the tab pro. It has better gpu i believe.
S pen was a seller for me since i love it for use for school

I had the 12.2 from BB as well, went to the 8 which turned out to be too small so I'm getting the Note 10.1 2014. I will say though I sometimes miss that 12.2. Yes it was heavy, yes it was a bit awkward, but it really felt like a beast of a machine. It felt as if you could actually get stuff done on it versus just doing some browsing/reading. The Note 8 just has such tiny text in places and the UI elements on some things are just not designed for that resolution/screen size. The 10.1 seems like an ideal size, but if that 12.2 had cellular as an option (like my 10.1 will have) I probably would've kept it. Also, 16gb yes, it's not enough. With the note 8 I was getting low mem warnings and didn't really have it long, so 32gb would be the minimum.
You may want to think on that 12.2 a bit more. The 12.2 also has the USB 3.0 and the now standard button layout (across their pro line). The 10.1 will get upgraded, but who knows when and what that will actually look like. There's also the charging times. I've been reading about 6+ hour charge times fro the note 10.1-14, not sure about the 12.2, but with the USB 3 it probably charges faster.

To put it simply, if you plan on writing hand written notes, go with the the note. It's great for students or productivity. If not, get the tab. The specs are almost identical.

i have the 2014 note 10.1 and it is great - portable but still a good size - i buy too many devices and i went to purchase the pro 8.4 on sunday from best buy but they wouldnt sell it to me - told me it was not available for sale until this friday ( i was at the cashier with the tablet in my hand lol ) i guess that is a good thing cause i really wanted the 12.2 - i was going to buy that one as well when it arrived at best buy this friday ( i am in canada btw ) i think the 12.2 would be perfect i had the asus 18.4 android / windows 8 tablet before that was massive but the screen was not good - they should have not sold it with a 1080p screen with that size it didnt look good at all ! on a side note i have the lenovo yoga 2 pro windows 8 ultrabook and that has the best screen i have ever seen on laptop or tablet - really wish it was android rather then windows though then it would have been awesome instead of just great

I'll add my input. I bought the 8.4 on release day and used it for a week. Having a note 3, I thought the 8.4 was too close to the size and felt pointless to me. I am now using the note 10.1 2014. Bought it yesterday and was going to box it up and return it today and buy the 8.4 again. Lol. So here I am using the note still and actually liking it now. I want the 4.4 on this before I can really make a decision ( thank god for best buy elite). I felt the extra gig of ram was worth it for me as I felt the 8.4 was sluggish when I pushed it. My note 3 is a champ. Will I see a real difference I don't know.
I thought maybe getting the pro 10.1 but I figured for the ram and the pen IF I ever use it it's there and same price. Gosh don't we have such problems deciding on a tablet.

The Note. It has triple the ram and the stylus with Wacom digitizer all for the same price. Sort of a no brainer imo. Not sure who would be the Tab Pro.

It's 3Gb vs. 2Gb, that's not triple.
I do have Note 10.1 2014 since release day, great device. It doesn't take 6 hours to charge, and USB 3.0 does not make difference in charging. I got also the 8.4, to replace Note 8.0, nice combination of large screen for work and a smaller one for reading.

Ah, I keep thinking the Tab Pro only has 1gb. Don't know where my brain is.

Thanks for your replies. I returned the Note Pro 12.2 and purchased the Note 10.1 (2014). It feels much better albeit physically smaller than my original Tab 10.1.

I picked a 32GB Note 10.1 2014 Edition. Picked it up because I used to have the original note. I wasn't sure if I should have purchased the tab pro instead.
So you guys have an opinion?
I like the s pen but I don't need it.

Tab Pro is newer
S-Pen is critical when I need to use it
I see SS will use Super Amoled on new Tab/NotePro line up in late 2014

It's almost the same tablet, same SoC, screen and (almost) the same body. The only hardware difference I found was whether or not the S-Pen is included.

All about the S-pen
If you like handwriting recognition, then you need the note. If you never use the S-pen, then what is the point? Individual decision based on useage case mate.

I've played with a couple of N12's and after the 4.4 update the N10.1-14 is faster. M-UX apparently uses a boat load of resources. When M-UX was first announced I was excited because it appeared to be thorough enough to be an alternate UI. It ended up being My Magazine de-constructed and on steroids and takes up a mandatory home page. For those that appeals to it's a potential plus. I'm glad we didn't get it because I like how my home pages are laid out. Don't forget the Tab Pro 10 only has 2GB of RAM. That may or may not be a big deal depending on how much RAM the active digitizer and S Pen/Note use. Speaking of the display it's not the same as ours because it's a standard conductive display. I have no idea what that translates in to performance wise. One benefit the Tab Pro 10 has is that it's newer and shares s/w with the other Pros. For all we know 4.4 may be our last update.
