Ive been waiting a month or so for the dev edition to come off backorder long enough to buy it. should I keep waiting or is the vzw version good enough with ss?

I'd hold off and check out the S5 to see what it's bringing to the table... me personally. .. I'm just about over the b.s. that we get from locked bootloaders

Depends on what you want. If you are satisfied with touchwiz ROMs and stock kernel then retail version is fine. If you want CyanogenMod and/or custom kernel then you will need to find a DE. Have been a couple on Swappa and eBay.

Yeah im good with safestap. As long as I can run beans for the next year ill be good. Lte gets pretty tapped out in my area sometimes. So im hoping aws helps with that.

Ordered my TF300

HEY GUYS! I just placed my order on Amazon for my TF300 and I can't wait. It comes in Tuesday and until then I will be spending my time in the forums trying to find out what I want to do to it.
I am coming from the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. It was a great tablet and the community was great. I was looking through this one and, to be honest, this forum looks a little confusing with the different versions for the different countries. The one I rodered is the TF300 B1-WH. I just wanna make sure that I can get what I need for this model from these forums.
So please stop by and tell me what you think and give some pointers. THANKS!

Take your time, do some reading and plan on a little time to verify there are no hardware issues before you go beyond stock. Most units selling today are on JB bootloader but if yours happens to come with ICS then consider nvflash.
Good Luck and Welcome!
Probably this is the best guide IMO - The best ROM is also BAKED - I'm currently on a test release which is amazing and BAKED just has all these AOKP customizations with the best stability and battery life of the AOSP Roms out there
also Ubuntu Touch is being ported but atm it's really, really a preview - not much working and not really stable!
thanks! I was so worried that since I was getting it off of Amazon that it was going to be some weird chinese version and almost useless. lol. I was able to find the 32GB refurb for 250. I am pretty stoked.
I was looking at the slim bean since that is what I run on my SIII but will wait for a slightly more stable version to come out. Any word on a paranoid ROM?
CleanROM is awesome. I definitely suggest giving it a try. We also have Paranoid Android. If you want to overclock you will want to use the 2.54 version with the modified Unter kernel in the 3rd post down from the OP under EXTRAS. There is a 2.99 version but its still a beta.
I ran the PA ROM for a few months and its nice. CleanROM performs better though.
I've got the 32gb version and love it. The dock is nice too if you ever decide to get one.

I to have cleanROM and it is simply awesome.
If i were you though i would give it a little while before you install custom ROMs just incase you have hardware issues and the tablet needs to go back for repair.
Then root the tablet and install a custom ROM. You won't regret it!

Only you can decide that. Look up the proposed features of the S5 and then see what the S4 offers and make a decision. I would wait until it is definitely known what the specs and features of the S5 will be because it's just speculation now. Also, do as much reading as possible. Just about any possible question about the S4 has been asked and answered, just use the search function to find those answers.
One more thing. If you wait for the S5, wait until the developers edition or GE edition is released. Maybe even get the International S5 version if it is proven to work with AT&T LTE (which it should). DO not get the carrier branded version unless locked bootloaders and bloat is what you are looking for. Also, look into the KNOX issues to see if it further cripples the phones ability to be customized. If it does, you will probably be better going with another brand. But, like I said, you need to read and decide for yourself. Good luck.
Personally I don't think it's worth the wait. As for the s4 it's a good phone but there are other great phones out at the moment. If I was in your shoes I would consider the nexus 5 HTC one and LG g2 as alternative options. There is the note 3 but that depends on if your willing to carry a 5.7 inch screen with you.
Also now that I've had the s4 for a while I honestly got bored with it. I was hoping 4.3 would breath life back into it but it's just about the same. As for safestrap it helped but shortly got bored with ROMs and went back to stock. For my next upgrade I'll try another brand.
interesting replys thanks for that seems like i got a bit of reading to
i was thinking of going for the s5 cause ive been more than happy with the s2 for the last 2 years and i would imagine the s5 when its released will be a full spec phone

The future of flashing custom Roms is getting harder with new phones coming out so keep that in mind, if you don't mind not flashing custom Roms than the s5 would be a great phone.

Stay far away from the official ATT S4, they locked this phone down so tight, no custom Recovery, no flashing fresh new ROM's. It totally sucks, and is a very disturbing trend from ATT. Even the new Note 3 got the shaft Development on the ATT Note 3 is NONEXISTENT.
Even though I do love my S4, great smartphone, but if you get an MF3, or MJ9 version, your screwed.
If you got the cash, and want an S4, get the Google Play Edition, or find an International S4 on eBay.
I sure hope ATT isn't going to continue this in the future, locking down all new phones, and killing development ?
At least the ATT HTC One is totally developer friendly, it can be rooted, recovery, and S-Off no problem.

Should I return my G Pad?

Merry Christmas everyone. Well my wife went out and bought be a G pad. While I'm extremely appreciative of her doing this, I didn't really want her to get me one at full price. I mentioned that I wanted one when it was only $300 at Best Buy. I guess I have no issue with keeping it but I just want to know the chances of this thing running stock Android. Is there a chance that this tablet could run a stock Android rom and get OTA updates? I'm over trying to mess with custom roms because they are always terrible and never work as well as stock.
If she paid full price then my suggestion would be to return it and get the GPE version if you want to run stock android. You might want to discuss this option with her to see how she feels about it if you're worried about her feeling hurt.

In my galaxy tab 2 cyanogen works 100 times better than its stock android as it doesnt have all the useless bloatware and frees up ram and memory. Stock firmwarein gpad runs just fine, especially if you have other android devices or a lg televison as it comes with usefull apps that only lg delivers. I dont find a reason to return gpad as it's the best tablet at the moment.

The LG os is just ok. Not so bloated like TouchWiz roms and if you uninstall some bloat you just will be OK with it.
I prefer much the lg version instead of stock android because I have a smart tv (Samsung by the way) and miracast works flawless.
I don't like stock android much, the LG keyboard is awesome!
I tried paranoid android and other 4.4.2 ROM and cm and I can tell you that they all loose much against stock firmware.
Only to give you an idea my cleaned stock ROM as 24 k antutu points and other 3 aosp based are in range from 17 to 21k!

I'm the opinion that cm is good for old devices that are forgotten. I never get better working device nor with aosp or cm. You miss all ways something and to get a stable release you need a year. I've s2 and the good working cm ROM is from last year.

I just discovered the LG G Pad like three minutes ago. It looks pretty good for some future plans I have with using a tablet as a car stereo interface. Damn good, actually.
Anyways, I have an AT&T Galaxy S4. As you may or may not know, there is also a Google Play Edition S4 out there. And naturally, the ROM for that phone was ported over to the Euro version of the S4 which we are able to flash on the AT&T S4 (with an AT&T custom kernel).
And the Google Play Edition ROM I ran was 99.99% stock and 100% rock solid. I would not hesitate for a second to flash that ROM again if I weren't a big fan of AOSP.
So, if this can be done for the S4, then I would assume you can flash the Google Play Edition G Pad ROM onto your regular 'ol G Pad at some point when the dev's port it over.

The s4 is not the Europe version but the international version gt 9505.
In Samsung devices is easier because you have open bootloaders.
And the matter that makes the possibility to convert is if there are many hardware and partition differences.
To tell you the true and going off topic the s4 as many problems with reboots and stability with the ge port.
I've Tryed myself 3 or 4 times and gone back to TouchWiz. Battery drains, reboots and much more. I think the issue was been kernel releated.
Cheers

Number one, just be happy with what you've got, you sound really pathetic. Number two, our custom ROMs are daily drivers and work better than LGs stock ROM. Number three, conversion to GPE is at a stand still, so it's impossible at the moment to get OTAs from anything but LG.
I'm a huge fan of CM. The nightlies may have minor bugs here or there but it generally makes a huge difference in performance to the phones I've installed it on. This is probably because its a newer version of Android - I installed CM7 on a Froyo phone and CM9 on a gingerbread phone. Even CM10 is better on a JB device. Much smoother with less lag and obviously stripped of bloatware.

If it's the difference in cost, Newegg has the Tablet for $299.99 Right Now... I was able to purchase my G-Pad on that event Saturday at BB for the cost of $279.00.. yes, it was a great deal.
I would think long and hard about going back to a 7" Tablet after owning an 8.3" Tablet.. And don't forget, you can Root the Tablet you have in a few minutes.. (It took me 2 Minutes) and maintain all the stability of Stock and Freeze or better yet, Uninstall all the apps you feel are Bloatware.. The Best of Both Worlds.. I'm running Mahdi right now and it's 100% stable and very smooth..

not all GS4's are equal as the att s4 is also in the same place as the g pad, it needs to be lokified as well, and actually the gpe port was not as bad (at least on the att cooked version) as you make it out to be, myself going to beanstalk with it being stable (not rock stable) but most of the time stable
otherwise like the dev mention it should be something silly being the reason why not everything works on the gpe, looking over the gpe (as it doesn't have the gpu problems all the other roms have) it does have a different file structure, but it shouldn't be impossible to bring it up

Yeah.. Newegg had them at the time for $249.99 shipped.. but I wanted to pay the $30.00 extra for 2 reasons.. 1) If anything was not right, I could just walk it in to BestBuy the same day and get a replacement.. 2) The return window was over 30 days.. I purchased the 1st week of December and have until January 15th to return/replace it if need be or the Mysterious Nexus 10 2014 should pop up in that time frame and be something REALLY special..
For the moment.. This is the Hottest Ticket on the Planet.

Just moved to a moto x DE from a verizon droid maxx that was stuck on 4.4 unrooted. Honestly, i wanted the droid maxx DE, but it was out of stock and i had the money now.
Only have had it for a couple days, but im really liking the size of the device. was kinda hesitant coming from the maxx, but it feels so good im my hands. I find that im not streching to reach the notification shade, and that the phone isnt sticking out the top of my shirt pocket when im working.
Another vote for Stock + xposed = no need to ROM. Wanted the dev edition so that i can always root no matter what update they throw at us.

Xposed with the Gravity Box module at a minimum. The rest depends on your needs. I also have the Moto Tether module.
Another benefit of the Dev Edition is to more easily flash ROMs down the road, when Moto/Lenovo stops supporting the device and releasing updates. Right now I have no interest in going off stock, but 2 years from now, that may change if I am stuck on Android 4.5 or whatever and 5.x has been out for a year.

i ran a s3 for a year before switching over and i can agree i froze TW from the start and installed a diffrent launcher. but i am happy to say even the stock launcher on this phone is great.
here is some of the stuff i have done
root
xposed
titanium backup
freeze all apps i dont use
greenify
new launcher
battery state read just incase something is draining the battery
i get about 1day 4hr on a full charge.
Root
Xposed; Modules: Gravity Box, Youtube ad-away, moto tether, root cloak, preference injector
Root enabled file explorer, I use Solid Explorer
Thats what im using so far, just got my DE 2 days ago, so im still getting settled in.
I also plan on flashing the image to get rid of the unlocked bootloader warning message that shows prior to the boot animation, but thats not really a big deal to me
I had a Verizon S4 on MK2. I will never buy another samsung phone in my lifetime, unless they decide to get rid of touchwiz... HA, right. Right now, I currently have a VZW DE Moto X I picked up on Swappa for about 390. It took 2 days to get here, and it is great. I do not miss my S4 one little bit. I even have it up for sale on Swappa but I'm not trying to advertise so I won't go into further detail on that. I love the Moto X, but I'm worried to take it out of the house xD.
Another former touchwiz convert here ... Came from Verizon Note 3 (had Note 2 prior to it) and while I wasn't overly thrilled about TW, I didn't mind it on the Note series (my first devices with TW).
Loved my N2 in every way, but the N3 (for me) sucked as a phone - bad quality, dropped calls and constant data drops/in and out of 4G etc
Decided to take advantage of the Moto sales and grabbed a DE X ... Of course I was concerned about the significant size difference, but after a week or so with the x I was hooked! Sold N3 and haven't regretted it at all.
Also agree with others as far as ROM's go .. No need IMO. Get Xposed and Gravity Box and you're golden!

Well both my DE and Black/White Bumper have shipped. Inter-webs say they will be here Tuesday. I shall turn on the Moto X and see if it needs to update to 4.4 and then check it out to ensure I am safe to port my number over. My phone is through a corporate account and is a pain in the ass to switch lol.
I've had the captivate, S2, S3, and Note 3. I always flashed custom ROMs because I hated TW so much. I bought the GSM DE, and feel no need to flash any custom ROM. For the first time, I'm completely happy with stock. Now, a custom kernel is another thing all together. Lol

Another Verizon Samsung gs4 convert. I came from Sprint before complaining about the previous few generations of HTC evo phones and I had no idea how much worse Samsung had messed up the android experience (especially with the way Verizon locks down the phone). Whomever is responsible for the abomination that is touchwiz should be flogged.
I've got the vzw de x and so far haven't seen a reason to ROM it.

Overall my AT&T Moto X works very well minus a few small bugs. I'd rather wait a few more weeks to get a very stable and solid 5.0 update than be first in line and have some bugs to deal with for the next 2-3 months while I have to wait for another update to resolve them. I am looking forward though to 5.0 and being able to then root my phone.
Maybe they're just going in numerical order. Lol xt1096, 1097..maybe someone's just extremely ocd at Motorola

yea no update yet for me. verizon got it, no idea what the hold up is for att there slacking

Disappointed with att. At least a soak test for those who like to try beta versions.
Maybe its not ATT fault.
Here in Brazil we also have the XT1097, both as a carrier branded (with the usual bloatware) and with a contract/bloatware free version bought directly from the Motorola Brazilian Store. None of the XT1097 versions have seen a soak test, not even the Motorola version.
I have the xt1097 from TELUS carrier in Canada with absolutely no bloat or carrier branding. Still no news. I hope that they at least update all the xt1097s at once.
ATT and Verizon firmwares are in the same level of modification, i guess. So, if Verizon is already pushing Lollipop, why att is not? I can only think that the problem is with att.
I bought my moto directly from motorola and they sendt a XT1097 (i'm in México) so i'm still waiting, I don't care about the soak, i just want the real thing.
i'm in a hurry to root it, but i want my OTA first.
Guys, do you really prefer those buggy builds? Think about it: Those builds that leaked before (. 5 and. 6) are full of bugs... just check the lollipop bugs thread. Yeah I am extremely anxious about it too but we have to keep in mind that this is android's biggest update to date, I don't think it would be great to get just some build first instead of getting something that actually delivers a great experience.
Verizon already have .11 and less bugs. As i said, a soak test program is for those who want to test, even with bugs.
But never mind, we just need to wait patiently, its our only choise.
