[Q] Update to 4.3 Verification Failed? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to update my Nexus 7 to 4.3. But I get a "Verification Failed." and it doesn't update.
I'm running Android version (4.2.1) on franco's kernel (3.1.10) along with Paranoid Android (2.99.)
Do I have to factory reset my Nexus? I'm mainly worried about my data and apps, as I don't know how to backup all of that info.
Thanks in advance.

Is it the ota that fails? You have a custom ROM, kernel, and recovery so expect an ota to fail.
Do you want stock? A new custom ROM?
Always make a backup in recovery of current setup in case you mess anything up. For most apps and data use something like titanium backup, this is often the easiest way to restore stuff in new ROM

Ah so I need to be on the original ROM and kernel for OTA? Is there another way to update besides OTA so that I don't have to go back to stock?
What I am trying to accomplish is to update my Nexus 7 to 4.3 while keeping most of my data intact. I guess I'll have to invest in Titanium Backup, thanks for the suggestion.

Just follow THIS guide. This way you can get the stock 4.3 without restoring the original rom/kernel/bootloader relocking. But you still have to save all your data.

how to return to stock rom?

Is there a zip file i can flash to return to stock rom? similar to flashing custom rom.
i would like to avoid using the nexus toolkit's restore factory image feature as it would wipe my device and its internal memory as well.
is this possible?
As far as I know, you can only return to the stock ROM by flashing the stock image.
Yeah, the downside is that you loose all your data. Could you do a nandroid backup and then just restore the apps? Or even titanium backup. That would fix your problems
Or use the toolkit to back up your apks n data

Testing ROMs

Hello, I am on CM10.2 nightlies for now but I would like to test out paranoid android 3.97.
If I make a nandroid of my current ROM, and then wipe data and stuff and then flash the rom and gapps, is it then possible to restore my nandroid and just update the cm10.2 nightlies with cyandelta like I used to do before?
Yes but if you referring to the OTA Updater then that is currently not working due to server maintenance to fix a redirection issue causing the page to redirect to the device page which is an issue to the updater.

How do you mean? If I install PA now, and then restore my nandroid of CM10.2, I wont be able to use Cyandelta?

If you did a nandroid of your CM10, wiped everything except for your userdata partition and flashed PA, it'll work.
If you flashed PA on top of CM10 WITHOUT WIPING, it PROBABLY would work but you'd run into a bunch of errors.
What the user on top was saying is that the OTA updater for PA is not really working right now. Nothing to do with Cyandelta.
And yes, if you want to restore your CM10 nandroid, just wipe the phone and restore the nandroid. (or just restore.. but i'd still wipe first.) and it'll work exactly as it is before.

TWRP -> Stock Recovery

What would the process be to go from TWRP recovery to the stock recovery?
There is a folder in my phone called TWRP and if I delete that would it delete the custom recovery or is the custom recovery buried deep in the system files?
Would I have to use odin to get back to the custom recovery?
Thanks!
Someone has already extracted the stock (MDL) recovery and posted it here somewhere. A quick search might find it. Are you running the stock firmware?

Forgot to provide some information:
Firmware: MDL
ROM: CM10.1 RC2
I don't plan on going back to stock for a while, unless I have a problem with my device but just want to gather some information ahead of time.
Would I use the stock recovery with odin?
The twrp folder just holds the backups. The recovery is part of the whole android system. Don't go looking for recovery or twrp stuff and just deleting it or you could Bork your whole recovery. Odin would be another way to return to the stock recovery, but the rest of your phone would be stock too. Why do you want the stock recovery?

Ohh that explains a lot. I totally forgot about the TWRP NANDROID backup capability.
I don't plan to go into the android operating system and deleting random files I don't know. That's just plain out idiotic.
I don't plan on going back to stock recovery and stock firmware anytime soon. Just gathering some information ahead of time just in case.

If you forgot about nandroid and you haven't made a backup yet and you're still on the stock rom, make one now. You'll be happy down the road you did.

It's too late for that now. I'm currently on CM10.1 and didn't do a Nandroid backup. Guess I'll have to do odin in the far future.
Is Nandroid backup important if I don't flash that often?
I don't plan on flashing my device every week, maybe once every couple of months.

Even on the odd weeks I don't flash anything, I still make a backup at least once a week. IF something goes wonky or I accidentally tweak the wrong thing, a quick restore quickly fixes it and with little to no data loss.

Alright. I'll do a backup sometime this week. Guess better safe than sorry.

Do a separate backup of your efs folder. so important! More important than any other backup!!!
Download your stock firmware and use kies to do emergency firmware recovery. That will return everything to stock including recovery. Make sure you reset your flash counter with triangle away before doing so.

[Q] Can you do a nandroid restore from Kitkat to stock?

So, I've been searching around the forum for "restore", "restore nandroid backup", etc. and I've always been directed to the method that's described here. Is that the only way to go back to stock? Can I not just restore my backup from my current Paranoid Android ROM?
If not, can I use my nandroid backup once I go back to stock using the aforementioned method?
KitKat does not allow custom recoveries.
Backup nand backup to PC, flash back to stock 4.2.2, install custom recovery, and then restore PA backup.
Should work.
Thank you for your answer!
I think I wasn't clear, though. I was on Paranoid Android at the time of writing the question. That's what I refered to as KitKat. And I wanted to go back to stock by restoring my nandroid backup of it. But, I've never seen anyone do it like that on the forums. Everyone used the LG flashtool. So, that's why I asked.
Ended up going to CloudyFlex, and I'm really happy about it!
Thanks again!

Technically, neither does JB. The Loki exploit is why we have any custom kernels/recoveries. I'm going to be submitting a request tomorrow to have Loki updated with the new aboot info.

[Q] Do I need to backup to flash a new custom recovery?

I have ClockWork currently, but want to get TWRP. Do I need to back up? And if so, how will I? Because i cant make a ClockWork backup if I am switching to a new recovery.
No backup needed. If you want to revert back to CWM later just download and flash the latest.

Thank you. Just had to make sure because I've lost data before.
