i noticed that when i'm on a call on my n4, i don't get any audible notifications of incoming calls, texts or emails.
is there a workaround to this? is this a android issue, or the phone itself?

If I'm not mistaken, that is how it supposed to work. This is why if you are listening to music and get a call, the music will stop. Same principle.
You can turn on vibrate for your notifications.

hmm, most of the other android phones i've owned had this feature. it kind of sucks when i'm driving for work (which i do a lot) and have my headphones on for calls. i can't hear or feel a vibration at that point. i'm not big on Bluetooth headphones. i still like the analog.
so i guess there's no software/app solution?

Maybe I'm not understanding the problem. Whenever I'm in the middle of a call, I always get a beep for call waiting but only visual notifications and vibrations for email and text messages.

yes, that's what i mean. calls come through audibly, but not texts or emails. i like that function on my other phones. i'm just wondering if it's a kk thing, or the hardware itself.

i don't think anyone has a problem, i was just wondering if there was an app or setting that allowed for those tones. no big deal, i'll live without them on the n4.

This has been a flaw in android since day one. You can't get actual notification sounds over BT. It is rumored to be running in 4.2. Is there truth to this? I'm still waiting for them to be available to get mine... but curious still.
just tested this and it is working for notifications. Although if it is a short notification sound, and it plays only once, it will not come through due to a slight delay between the phone and bluetooth device (but I can hear the headset turning on as if to play something and then turns back off). Works fine for longer notifications.
I get notification sounds over bluetooth when its connected in my car, always have even with ics.
I get notification over my Bluetooth headphones. No problem here.
Tho notification tend to stop my power amp player for some odd reason....

Just to make sure, toy guys are getting custom notification sounds right? Like per contact call or text notification sounds

This happens to me too. I thought it was just a bug on the ROM, but may be the app.
No ringtones thru Bluetooth Headsets

This is true you can hear notifications if they are long enough although the first second gets cut off due to lag i think...... but this is not the issue we were discussing on the google forum. CANT POST LINK SORRY............
The issue was that we cant hear our custom ringtones thru Bluetooth. I have the Galaxy Note and a Motorola HX550 and i can get all voice commands, and even hear notifications, and hear it read my text messages to me, but i cant tell whos calling when my phone is in my pocket on vibrate. I want to hear custom ringtones thru my bluetooth so i can tell whos calling. And i believe the same issue is with car bluetooth from what i read in the forum on google this forum started in 2009 about this no ringtone thru bluetooth, and there are still no fixes or apps that can let us decide what sounds go where.
For example it would be nice to have an app with check boxes available to make ringtones go to bluetooth, and notifications be muted, music go thru headfone jack, etc... This is a long time comming just read the forum and look at the start date 2009..... 4 years and noone fixed this issue.
XDA please help us even if its just a quick someting to get the ringtone to go thru bluetooth.... PLEASE someone!!! :crying:
That link you mentioned you can't post is the one in my sig.
Yeah posted that back in 09.... Recently some one official took "owner ship" of the thread and said it was fixed. However it isn't. Flip phones that existed before the smart phone era were able to play custom bluetooth sounds. Yet the most advanced phone to date can't.....
Occasionally I hear a notification alert tone (it sounds like two quick chords), but no alert text is posted to the notification area, so I can't tell what app or function is generating the tone. Has anyone else had this problem? I searched the forum but haven't found any answers.

It's stock Android. I don't see a way to do that.
I've had the same thing happen. Not sure what it was or why, but it was charging when I heard it. Was not fully charged, it was only at about 80% so it can't be that.

I've had this happen before about 3-4 weeks ago but it hasn't happened since and never found out what it was. Perhaps a random app and there was an error with the notification or something? Best of luck
Try holding your phone up to your wallet, see if it makes the chime. My guess is you have a card with an imbedded chip in it and your phone's NFC is detecting it but doesn't know what to do with it, causing nothing to happen.

i get this once in a while too, when i receive a message with screen off, it just plays the notifcation sound, screen don't turn on and no notifcation in the center, i have to manually go in app to see it
mystery notification tone but no alert (NFC is 'off')

Thanks for that suggestion. NFC was already turned 'off', so that's not the culprit.
I have this happen for MMS if I'm in a poor data coverage area. Sometimes the MMS will show up days later, sometimes not at all.
NFC? My credit card and my ID both have NFC so whenever I hold the two together, or when there're in my pocket together I get a short notification sound, and nothing onscreen, I was wondering what it was for a while, but then realised it was NFC. Maybe it's NFC for you too?

As I previously wrote, I have this feature turned "off".
Are you using google now at all? You might be getting notifications from something there.
I've the S4 for a little over a week, but it's been a rather busy week so I haven't given it my full attention as yet. I really like it so far, I haven't gotten all the bells and whistles to work and I'm testing battery life with them disabled vs enabled etc. But I'm not really doing much else with it yet.
The only actual issue I'm having is receiving phone calls. When someone calls me, it takes a couple rings on their end before my phone starts ringing (I've encountered this with Sprint before though) but then when I try to answer the call, I don't get the person on the other end. I get a recorded message telling me I've got an incoming call from (name of caller in my contacts list) and if I want to accept to press 1 now. The message takes so long to get to that point that by the time it tells me to press 1 to accept the call, the call goes into voicemail.
I don't receive a lot of phone calls, but I would like to be able to actually answer them when I do. As of now when someone does call me I have to call them back.
This message plays AFTER I've 'accepted' the call on the screen and it plays through the handset not the speakers. I have Google voice set up for my voicemail.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Sounds like you have google voice setup or you used to. You will have to go to the site on your pc to disable it.

I thought Google Voice had something to do with it but I didn't think of checking the settings via PC.
For anyone else with the same issue: Google.com/voice>settings>calls> call screening off.
I purchased the Note 8.0 last week and like everything about it. However, there is one annoying issue that I have yet to resolve. I get allot of notification alerts and when watching a video or listening to music, the incoming notification temporarily pauses the video and interrupts the audio. Has anyone else experienced this and if so, how did you resolve?

This happens with my Samsung Galaxy phone too. My workaround was to turn off most notifications. Also, I use a sound profile app to turn off the notification sounds during the work day, and I don't notice that the muted notifications affect anything I am listening to. I don't know how else to "fix" it, but perhaps someone else will have a good idea.

Have you given the blocking mode a try, it has an option to supress notifications as well as calls and stuff.

I did try the blocking mode, but it bugs me that there's an icon showing that the blocking mode is on. I haven't found a way to turn that off. (Dang, I'm picky.)

Well as Lemmy once said/sang : You win some, lose some, it's all the same to me
Some of my incoming calls directly goes to voicemail without ringing.. mostly at night..I have turned off all battery optimizations...Any one have noticed this? I did multiple factory resets... I am using xXX mod, not sure if that can be reason in anyway...
I've noticed this too, quite a lot. I've got Google voice so it tells me I had a missed call, and can see it on my browser ringing, but not on the phone...
