Hi,
I'd like to reduce bandwidth on a tablet (Archos 80 titanium). I just have 1Mbit (~120ko/sec) internet access and a teenager using it to watch streaming videos I try to explain him, but nothing to do...
I don't want to buy a wifi router to do this.
I rooted the tablet to try using the "tc" Unix command. I can use "tc", but it didn't work, it says "qdisc" (an argument of the command) not found or something like this...
Is there an app for doing this or an other way ?
Thanks !

I would like such an app like this to limit bandwidth on tablet because it shows computer.
Download DroidWall from Play Store. This application allows you to block certain apps from connecting to the Internet. It uses root.
Since it's your kid streaming stuff you might want to hide this app. If you can do that just through your launcher that's good. If you can't, you might want to download ThinkYeah's AppHider from the Play Store. Both apps are free.
Hope this helps,

Hi
Is there any app that can be used as monitoring the data usage of each application?
On example how many kb using mail app, google talk, google maps etc...
So, per application data usage
Thank you
There was a thread asking the same question a while back and it seems the answer is no
I'd post a link but I'm still a newbie
I would like such a app myself - but as a workaround you can dial *#*#4636#*#* , click "battery protocol" (or something like that, my phone is in german...), in the first dropdown "network usage" and then click on the apps and it will tell you how many bytes the program sent/received.
Nice one, that let me see what it was that was using up so much data.
i have an ap called 1013 in this list, but when I click it, I get an error..
does anybody know what this could be?
because its bar is completely filled!!
there's also a bar for media, thats quite high, any ideas what this could be?
because I haven't used any music photo or movie app since I've stopped charging..
3G Watchdog can help
i have been use it for a month... so far so good

Or use the Spare Parts app which essentially does this but in a more user friendly way
I've been using software called Network Statistics. It does exactly what your asking but with a few quirks. It doesn't differentiate WiFi from mobile data so I had to reset the counter when switching from one to the other. The only way I've found to reset the counter is to pull out the battery.
That said, it helped me pinpoint fairly quickly what background app was ripping through my data allowance (foursquare).
It seems the author no longer supports it, but it's still available for 50p. http://www.appstorehq.com/networkstatistics-android-174793/app/buy

This seems to be able to monitor battery and CPU by app but not network use by app? Or am I missing that somewhere?

I just discovered : TrafficStats
http: androidapplications.com/105333-network-trafficstats-lite
It does the trick for me,
/barfly...
I've been searching for similar apps as well (light weight)
Found another option...
https://market.android.com/details?id=net.ir.apptrafficfree
Seems to use built in data monitored by the os, for ver 2.2 onwards only though.
Cheers
HR
You need root for: eNETraffic
For what I can tell it only records 3G traffic
And it has the option to block internet access per application only on 3G (when on WiFi everyone allowed, on 3G some blocked)
Dan.
I use 'My Data Manager', it shows usaage by app and also by 3g and Wifi and has several months of data backed up.
There's a free version with ads and a paid one without.
See:
http://bit.ly/s86P3V
Or just falsh one of ICS roms. They've built in data usage monitor with limits, monitoring for each app and other cool stuff.
eNETraffic has new update that includes wifi. Works great. Do need root.

Here is the link.
Onavo is a good app indeed. Clean look and feel and very useful!
I may be posting in the wrong location and if i am my apologies but:
Just a question does anyone know of a site like iphonemoviez.net that will allow you to stream movies from an android device namely the DX????
Well there is that blockbuster app. I've seen a few other services but ether their servers get pulled or the software has become broken and buggy with the new android versions.
What i do though is use transdroid to search and remotely add torrents to my utorrent at home then using orb live (or the mobile site) and stream it once its done downloading. May not be as click and watch as i would like but it gets me by.
Keep in mind i only watch creative commans documentaries. Copyrighted movies are illlegal to view without buying the rights. So if ur intrested in that the blockbuster app is the only one i know that acutally works today.
Hope this helps

+1 This would be very useful, mainly for when connected via HDMI to a TV or playing music in a different room, then just use phone as a remote.
Point of interest, the game Crazy Snowboard from the market has an option where you can play on your tablet while controlling your snowboarder from an Android phone via wifi. Figured I'd mention it since this is along the same line as what we're looking for.

Digging up an old thread here. I use TeamViewer to access my other PC's from Android devices, but am looking for something where I could access the tablet from my PC. Is anyone aware of an app to remote access the Androids?

Havent tried it but this: market.android.com/details?id=com.iandrobot.andromouse.lite
or this: market.android.com/details?id=berserker.android.apps.blueputdroid
would probally work. Basically they just turn your phone into a bluetooth mouse and keyboard. Theres many other apps like this, those are just two that i picked.
Im sure there are vnc servers apps out there for android. you could install a vnc client on your phone then remote in to the tablet with the vnc server running. That would be one way of doing it. That's not very elegant but would work.

Not likely what I'm looking for as I would not be near the tablet, and even if I were, it's not likely I would use this rather than just picking up the tablet.

I thought of this, and would work maybe 90% of the time. The other 10% of the time is if my tablet happens to be somewhere other than my house as it would then be on a different network and the client would not have a way to get to it, unless there are VNC servers that have a web service that broadcasts the tablets current location, similar to dyn-dns.

Hi,
I've found an app to control an android device from another android device. You have to install the app "DroidMote Client" on the device from which you want to control and install "DroidMote Server" on the device which you want to control. I'm using this on my HTC Desire to control my Transformer while it is connected to my TV. It works really good with this devices
Look at YouTube

Bluepurdroid is free on the market and works over bluetooth. You can choose to use a mousepointer to navigate your iconia, keyboard also works. You can also use a sixaxis controller. Haven't tried this on my A500 but works great on my ps3. The mouse and keyboard works just fine, like using a bluetoothkeyboard.
Great app for controlling the a500 while using it with a HDTV.
Something like teamviewer or vpn server?
hm while using team viewer to connect to pc in the popup window on pc there is a no. which is used to cennect to the device. Did someone tried to use this no. to connect back to the team viewer on the tablet?
i've been using DroidMote between my Iconia and my Fascinate for months running netflix and google music on my tv. definitely don't regret not getting a google tv device! ha. it runs great and yes you can use a wireless (usb) keyboard and mouse but most of us also own an android phone and they're much more convenient and one handed. just thought i'd put my two cents out there for anyone stumbling across this thread. totally worth the money, replaced my wii for HD netflix streaming!
I've been watching a lot of Nexus Player videos on YouTube, but I haven't seen one yet that shows anyone being able to skip the online portion of the system setup in the beginning. Is it possible to choose to not link any accounts or anything to the Nexus Player and use it COMPLETELY offline forever, without ever connecting to the Internet or logging into any accounts?

It seems so, but you would be limited in what it could do. You couldn't chromecast without a Wi-Fi connection. You couldn't stream videos either. You could only play videos off a USB stick (if you root).

I'm okay with the restrictions for now. I just wanted to be sure that if I wanted to set it up completely offline for the purposes of rooting and sideloading that it could be done if necessary. I have fine wifi, I'm just making sure I can do everything locally in case support for the device is just completely dropped in the future.

What I should have also said was that you have to set it up once via Wi-Fi. After that, you can use it without restrictions for local content.

Oh, so you really are REQUIRED to set it up online once? You can't even skip the initial setup?
I'm pretty sure you are required to login once to use it. Once you do that though, you can root it, put custom roms on, or whatever. I doubt there will be many problems if/when support for it is dropped.

Ah, that's a good point, huh? If I can get in just the initial time, I can basically put a bunch of stuff on there to prevent that in the future.
I know there has been a lot of confusion with android wear and iPhone compatibility..... My main question is: if you side load and android wear app (for simplicity sake let's say a web browser or something that requires a constant connection to operate on say a moto 360... Will it work while connected to an iPhone? I know the Google app works but even to have maps back if you side load the APK... Thanks

Yes, they will work, however, you need to do some magic to have internet access over bluetooth for apps that don't support it out of the box. If you force your watch to use wifi(you can disable bluetooth on your phone) then all apps will work through wifi regardless of your phone.
Or, you can put apps you trust in the /System folder.

Thanks! So regarding this "magic" you speak of... Is this to do with the apps or is it something that requires a jail token iPhone? Is it relatively easy to achieve? Like what lekofragfle said about throwing them into /System?

Yea, I think throwing it into system is enough. No need to jailbreak your iphone. However, you'll need to access /system and for that you need root access or you can modify it from the TWRP recovery.(I strongly recommend against permanently flashing it to your watch, you can boot into it by loading into watches's ram memory) So, either way, you need to know how to use android command line tools.
Wish I knew how to access /system on watch, I know about rooting android phones but not enough to tinker with Android wear watch [emoji53]

The wear system is the same as a phone. My watch (the Sony sw3) is actually easier and safer to root than any phone or tablet I have had. And you can do a temporary root too.
