Hi,
I don't think it's Galaxy S related so if it's the wrong place, it would be great if someone could move it to Android general.
So, I own a Samsung Galaxy S (international) and a micro SD Card Kingston. This morning, I tried to modify my GS (get root access, use voodoo lagfix, ...) and now, I have a problem.
When I start the GS, everything works fine, I can see my SD Card and my music on it. If I connect the GS on a computer (Gentoo or Windows, doesn't matter), the OS doesn't detect the 32GB SD Card.
When I turn off the USB connection, my SD Card disappeared, I can't access it from the GS anymore.
I have the external SD Card that is a perfect copy of Internal SD Card (~6GB) => Settings -> SD Card and phone storage.
If I want to get access to my 32GB SD Card, I have to reboot my GS.
By the way, I did a backup with MyBackup (I removed the 32GB SD when i did that) and the app copied the backup in /mnt/sdcard/external_sd which was empty.
So now, here is the /mnt/sdcard/external_sd :
Boot (32GB activated) :
/mnt/sdcard/external_sd = 32GB SD Card content (music, movies, ...)
After connecting the USB and change the GS as mass storage device :
/mnt/sdcard/external_sd = MyBackup's backup (6GB content).
Another thing, If i reboot the GS and connect it to kies (not mass storage), I can find my 32GB SD Card and when I close Kies, it's still okay in the Galaxy S, I can still use my 32 GB SD Card.
It's strange.
Can someone help me with this ?
Thanks.
I had a similar problem with my sgs some time ago with stock rom. Samsung support suggested me to hard reset.
After flashing a new firmware everything worked flawlessly.
Kies might be the problem.
Dont know a lot anyway.

Hi,
thanks for the answer. I'll try another ROM.
Btw, I read that Gingerbread is coming out in March. If I use a custom ROM (Darky 9.2, Insanity, CM7, ... whatever), could it be possible to get the Samsung Update (after a factory reset for example).
For the moment, I have a voodoo lagfix with recovery mode (e2). Could it be broken after the update ?
Thanks.

No you will need Odin and stock rom or a custom rom .
Kies upgrade path requires correct product code and firmware and hardware codes .

Hi,
are you sure about that ? I tried another ROM called Darky Rom 9.2 Resurrection and I had a wifi problem (couldn't get IP address : if anyone can help me with this because I really did like this ROM). I was bored trying so I connected the SGS to Kies and it installed me Froyo.
After that, I still had to use Voodoo kernel but my SGS is working just fine.
I searched the forums, but was unable to find anything relating to this.
I rooted my A500 and then installed Acer Recovery Installer 1.5, and installed CWR 1.3.4 with it. Now I'm trying to do a full backup of my device, but once I'm in CWR, It says there is zero % room on my SD card. It's an 8GB card so I know there is room for it but I think that it's not detecting it. (In Root Explorer, my SD card is under "/mnt/external_sd" and "/mnt/sdcard" appears to be just system storage. Is that normal?) Do I need to do an extra step to backup? I want to put a custom ROM on it, but I always do a backup in case something goes awry...Thanks!
Try a new microSD card, CWM doesn't work with all cards plus you're not the only one, I believe to have read like 20 times the same issue you have.
Thanks for the fast reply!
I'll try that then. I have a 32gb class 6 coming in the mail so I'll try that when it gets here.
I didn't realize it was already discussed! I searched for all sorts of related things I could think of, but couldn't find anything close. Sorry!
EDIT: I forgot to mention, I have used this card on an Inspire 4G and it worked fine with CWR. Could it just be because it's another device?
You can try out an usb stick to, it works for me like charm. I used a noname 16gb usb stick for all of my backup and restore.
I have three 8gb micro SDHC cards, and one (older) 1gb microsd card (non HC).
I only managed to get backups and zip flashing to work with the 1gb card.
So there's definately something goin on there.
I hope the problem will be solved at next release of CWR. I never had this problem because I didn't used a micro sd till now, but I´m planing to buy one to get more space. I think a list of supported sd cards would be good for all of us.
I'll try the USB stick and see how that goes for me. I didn't realize that USB was an option! It's strange though, I never had something like this happen on my Inspire so I thought I was just messing something up.

That's probably a good idea!
I acknowledge that there is most definately a problem with using some sdcards.
But something just occurred to me that some people may not understand.
If you have a USB stick inserted, clockworkmod sees that as /sdcard instead of your real microsd.
So if your trying to use a microsd card, make sure there is no usb stick connected during bootup to recovery.
If you want to use as usb stick instead of the microsd, make sure it's connected during bootup to recovery.
When I was first trying it, I had nothing plugged into the USB port, but then I tried it with the USB stick last night and it made a backup so then I flashed a ROM. I got stuck in a boot-loop though so I tried to restore it and it didn't work. I ended up just going with a different ROM. I'm a little hesitant now when wanting to flash a new ROM. If I have a Micro SD card in and a USB stick in could that be messing something up? Should I have taken the SD card out before recovering from USB? It's running fine now with the ROM, but if I ever want to flash something else, I'd like to be prepared just in case!
UPDATE well it looks as though I have found a solution to my woes. I made several attempts of formatting the 2gb card in my laptop to no avail. I tried my old captivate that it originally came out of and the cappy had troubles reading it. I then stuck it in my evo and it registered instant, so I did asdcard format on my evo and then finally the tablet registers the card. In case this helps anyone else
First off someone please enlighten me on the tabs use and the way it mounts the external SD, I read somewhere that it only uses it for media files such as music books and pics. I have an 8GB that belongs in my EVO, and a 2gb that I had for my captivate I was hoping to use in my Tab for now.
Here's my story, maybe someone can shed a little light here: My tab was purchased with Stock 3.1, I was getting annoyed by the constant update request so I went ahead and rooted and installed CWM without incident, then I decided to install the Stock rooted update from here, however when I insert my SD cards they say they are unavailable. So I stick my 2gb in my laptop format to fat32 (should this be different?, typically it works in every other device I own) It still won't read, I did exactly as others point out in other threads but still I am stumped as to how the card is made available to the OS ? Now in a fit of frustration I pulled my 8gb out of my evo put the 2gb in and wham there it is, I put the 3.2 download on the 8gb popped it in tab entered CWM and flashed the update, I don't know if the 2gb is mountable in CWM I will try tonight but the 8gb was mountable through CWM however my 8gb also was not available to Android even after the update.
So what the heck is the use of the external SD and how is it used?
I think you might have an issue with your ROM,
I use my external SD for my titanium backups and other files I want to keep portable. I have used the SD card through my PC via USB and directly by putting into the PC's card reader.
Have you tried using a file manager? I use File Manager HD and the external card shows up as Storage on the left bar.
As for the filesystem, I think I may have originally formatted as FAT but I have also pulled my SD out of my Blackberry and used it to install Honeylicious through CWM,
All in all I dont think you should be having the issues that you are having...
Good luck
If it won't mount in CWM you need to format it in your android phone, that fixed it for me. Once it is formatted correctly you'll see a notification that an SD card is installed. Also my PC wouldn't see it until I put a custom rom on. Also to store items on it you can use a file manager to move things to and from it.

The 8gb card did mount in CWM but would not mount in the OS, or when it would I would get it was unavailable or sometimes even empy when I know there is only about 1 gb free space, I did not test the 2gb in CWM mainly because it was late and I needed to go to bed, but I will try tonight. The 8gb is the one I updated to rooted 3.2 with, I still need to go to 3.2.1 ? Is there a rooted Stock 3.2.1 floating around I really havent looked much into it yet
I have noticed that getting the iconia to read some sd cards is like tossing dice..Most people who have this issue says one card works perfect in every device but not in the iconia.. Some say the card will work sometimes and not others .. Some say the card works in cwm and not with file manager..
The issue here i think is that you have two CARDS THAT ARE FUSSY ABOUT mating with the iconia. OR Your rom .i would read the threads in the rom you are using.. IF still nothing that sounds like your issue ask the DEV about this.. If STILL No luck you can either try to buy a new diffrent card or flash a new rom to try and Diag. this issue..
Good luck..
Silly question
Is your microSD formatted FAT32?
If it is anything else, your unit may have trouble reading it depending on what ROM you are using - Not all ROM's are capable of reading NTFS or other file systems.
Sometimes, microSD's freak out as well, and the only way to get it back to normal is to format it in a Symbian phone (Nokia)
Also, make sure you are using the correct mount point for the card - /mnt/external_sd - Root Explorer and other apps like it can get there.
Other than that, you may just have a bad microSD, I have had many of them die for seemingly no reason.
A- I recently installed Link2SD on My rooted Galaxy S5 (SM-G900H) and everything seemed ok. The app asked me to reboot my phone, when I did my phone stuck on the SAMSUNG Logo screen and FACTORY RESET/Wipe data didn't work. I even tried emergency recovery with no luck (Error mounting efs). I fixed the efs issue and I re-installed the stock ROM and re-Rooted my device.
I didn't re-install Link2SD anymore because I'm afraid it may break my phone.
1- What is the maximum size of the ext2 partition?
2- Does it work on SM-G900H without issues?
B- Despite what they say about Kitkat and that you cannot move your apps to SD card, I have the option on my phone to move (movable apps) to SD card and that's good enough for me. I purchased a SANDISK Extreme plus 64 GB SD card (Which is formatted in exFAT by default). When I move apps to SD and reboot my phone, all the apps on SD disappear and my phone starts acting weird and apps crashes. Maybe it's because of exFAT but I'm sure the SD card is fine and not broken. That's why I wanted to try Link2SD and see it it solves the problem.
Have anyone faced theses issues? Anyone know a solution for these problems? I appreciate any help.
Bump... Me too!

Yes, I am having a very similar problem and I also have the 64GB SanDisk Extreme and SM-G900H and rooted.
Did you ever find a resolution?
My extSD seems to come and go. The last time I uninstalled the last 2 apps and it was good for 24 hours. Put I just pulled it off the charger and it started acting up again.
I cleaned the contacts, chkdsk'd it on my PC (everything reads fine) and rebooted a few times but no luck.
This post had some good recommendations but cleaning contacts, etc. didn't help me.
I was going to try an OTA update but it seems that I need to un-root first. That's my next step -- starting over.
Try FAT32

You SD card is formatted with exFAT? Try formatting it with FAT32. I didn't try it yet because I can't use my phone since my EFS partitions are gone and my IMEI code changed to 004999.... (Generic IMEI code).
Let me know if this solves your problem.

64GB will for sure need to be exFat -- FAT32 can't access all the space.
This is a good utility to reformat and fix it OR you can use the cmd level commands.
For me, I am able to use it intermittently now -- seems like it will work for hours, even days, then have a problem when I pull it off the charger. Of course, I woke up this morning and it wasn't working AGAIN.
I am on the phone now with Samsung tech support to see if there is a log somewhere that can give me more information about what is exactly failing. I did use this same card in 2 other Galaxy S5's (AT&T and T-Mobile versions) with no problem. Maybe I ruined the card when I had it in my wallet?
FAT32 - I was wrong.

I was wrong. FAT32 CAN access all the space. I reformatted with FAT32 using the fat32format program and still have the same problems.
Furthermore, it happens with and without root -- I've reflashed a million times now.
At this point, I think that I just got a bad card reader in my unit because the card went off just by tilting the phone sideways last night (clean install, no root, no apps).
Good luck to the original poster.

I am observing a similar problem. This week I decided to move up from my marshmallow-powered Verizon Galaxy Nexus (i515) to a brand new Verzion Galaxy S7 (G930V) that came with PH1 firmware. Shortly after rooting the stock ROM I noticed that the phone labeled my external sdcard (PNY Elite 200GB UHS-I) as "corrupted" in the settings. I wrote this off to my experimentation with adoptable storage. Reformatting portable storage in settings did not fix the issue; returning to stock did. I then started playing with the couple versions of stang5litre's ROM in the development thread. The same thing kept on happening: at some point the portable storage in settings became labeled "corrupted." Again, I didn't think much of it because I was jumping back and forth between stang5litre's versions and stock to compare features and figured I was doing the corrupting.
As it turns out, the sdcard really isn't corrupted.
Scanning the sdcard on my Windows PC with CHKSK reveals no errors.
Scanning the unmounted sdcard in Android via adb (fsck.exfat /dev/block/mmcblk0) produced no errors.
I can mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 to /mnt/media_rw and access the sdcard data.
If the sdcard "corruption" is happening with rooting, I wonder if the solution is in a SuperSU setting.

Same exact thing here installed stang all was good I believe until I installed xposed I pulled the card for now last time I had not installed xposed & it happened real quick after root. First time I rooted installed xposed & it happened right away. Second time right after root no xposed. Third time had it rooted 3 days all good installed xposed couple reboots later did it again wtf lol. Im a boat heavy diesel mechanic working 16-18 hrs a day so with the time consumption of all this I get a little cross eyed at times lol thanks

I played around with various SuperSU options to no avail.
What is the mount point of the external sdcard supposed to be?

I think /whatever u named or labeled card not %100 though
I took things all the way back to stock and have been going in slow steps, letting things sit for a bit between steps to see the moment when the portable sdcard gets "corrupted". I also made sure to diligently follow instructions.
Stock Verizon S7 (G930V, PE1) - SD card good
Rooted following psouza4's pinned guide - SD card good
FlashFire'd S7_or_S7Edge_Fixes_V15.zip - SD card good
FlashFire'd xposed-v85.1-sdk23-arm64-custom - SD Card good
ADB installed Xposedinstaller_3.0_alpha4.apk - SD Card good
SDcard is apparently /dev/block/vold/public:179,1 which mounts to /mnt/media_rw/5075-2B3F as exfat. /mnt/media_rw/5075-2B3F is mounted to /storage /5075-2B3F as sdcardfs.
I'm guessing the "5075-2B3F" is my card label.
Going to let things sit for a few days before I try out stang5litre's V2 ROM again.

I'll tell u though when I factory re setted off stang v2 I got stuck on activation screen still said stang but corrupted tried everything to no avail no odin cause usb debug is now deactivated. Then I tried power vol up & down keys & home up comes maint boot where one option is to turn on usb debug. Restart to download odin recognises its all good from there

I'm sitting on four days rooted no problems. Used G 930U used fix & not fix & debloat as I used originaly, debloated myself using SD maid pro which is pretty handy no xposed yet gotta get a little more rest before that case it goes bad lo do want xposed mainly for extra stuff for greenify. I Just want to say thanks to everyone here for all the information gathered here. You usually won't here much from me here as I usually try to work through my problems just reading, don't like to bother people. Thanks so much again
I have the same issue, tried 6 different cards which all work on other cells and my pc. I am back to factory now and cards still do not work on my s7

As of now I have everything working including xposed w/ greenify. its been almost a week all is stable. Dont know the exact cause maybe overzealous de bloat. Don't use package disable as this is for non root anyway, I think I used it on first 2 foul ups uninstalled it after root maybe it was too late. Also I just used the fix & not the debloat/fix although I have no Idea if that had any effect the first two times. I've been using SD maid pro to debloat & maintain once u get it figured out its real nice just be careful as default settings are safe but there are settings that will allow you to take yourself down I know from experience lol. Once this symptom happens I dont think there is an easy fix gotta re load . I also think leaning to the conservative side of debloating might help. Right now mine is as close to perfect as I could hope for after four failed attempts. Thanks to u all
