Nexus 4 GPS toggle issue/GPS issue - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
I bought a few weeks a nexus 4 and I have a issue with the Location on/off toggle. When I start the phone is working perfect ( great accuracy and very fast) but when I turn off the location services to save some battery...when I turn on it again, maps/facebook(web) or every app that uses GPS doesn't receive any signal. In maps says WAITING FOR LOCATION and nothing happens. I need to restart the phone to make it work again. I need to mention that I upgraded to 4.4.2 kit kat from the first boot so I don't know if this issue is present on 4.3
PS: sorry for my english.

Hey there, I have a similar issue (maybe the same one?) which I posted about yesterday here. GPS works fine in high accuracy mode, but sometimes the battery saving mode (which uses wifi and cellular network only) doesn't give any location ("Waiting for location..." etc.). After rebooting, battery saving mode usually works fine, until "broken" again (possibly after toggling accuracy, as you mention). I'll dig and experiment a bit more around that and see how it goes.

Hope it's a software issue. My phone is brand new and I never dropped. Maybe 4.4.3 will fix this because it gets annoying!

Me,too! I found this bug when using nexus 5 port rom, then I flash nexus 5 experience and stock rom KOT49H, the status is the same. When we restart our phone gps works great (high accuracy or battery saving) but when you turn it off and open it again there is no any signal. I bought my nexus 4 a few weeks, too. I worried about this problem with my phone 's hardware but now I think it is a bug of build version KOT49H nexus 4. We can wait for Google Maps update or KitKat update^^

I have the same problem with my nexus 4 (stock 4.4.2, rooted).
Gps & WiFi location work Ok after boot, but after disable/re-enable location settings no location-related application works (even google maps)...
Hope that a new update 'll solve this problem

I created a bug report
https://code.google.com/p/android/i...=4&colspec=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars

It's not the phones fault. It's a issue with google play services.
It started with either the most recent update to it or maybe the one before it. But it's a relatively new issue and not hardware or a rom issue.
Happens on other devices....

Yup you do. More for the others who don't and won't actually look at the bug report.
We get many what I call glance over readers on the forums.
I hope they fix this soon. This has been going on for some time now and it's really starting to get annoying.

They replied to bug report. They say its Google play services issue, which is correct, and that we can only report bugs for android itself.
I'm not sure where to report a play services issue so will have to find out. As so much 'android' functionality is now moving to play services we need a channel to report play services bugs.

Yeah not sure what tree to bark up for that.
We will just have to wait and see if it's fixed in the next Google Play services release. If it isn't I guess folks are just going to make a bigger louder fuss about it.

Not sure that it is just a Google Play services issue...
I had created a small app which gets location through the old android.location APIs ((LINK) and uses Google Play services just for showing the MAP...
This app should work and get new location when the problem happens on the phone, but this is not the case...
I can see in app's logs that the location providers do not get any location fix from GPS and WiFi.
Conclusion: when the problem happens in Nexus4 no location is working, even when the classic android.location providers are used (and not the Google Play services Location)

On android 4.3 jellybean and play services 4.2.43 the location works fine after off/on. So I agree its not just a play services issue.

It seems that the problem is solved after update to latest Google Play Services (rev. 16) :good:
WiFi Location works fine after many tries to stop/start in location settings.
Maybe there was a bug in older Google Play Services that was messing up with location providers after stop/start.

where can I find the updated google play services? I noticed that My correct position is shown in waze, but it is off in google maps...using high accuracy. (i get a correct gps lock in gps status as well..

I think I updated installing the latest gapp from PA. I'm using pac rom kitkat version. So my problem is that gmaps doesn't use the gps at all, just the triangulation from cell towers or wifi. I don't know if the issue is the gmaps version or other... If I set the location on hi accuracy in gps status I get a lock and my position and navigation works fine in waze or any other app but not in Google maps. If I set to airplane mode and turn gps on I get a Grey dot in gmaps... Is anyone having the same issue?

GPS Issues still...

When I made the switch to android one of the things I was most excited for was google maps and free turn-by-turn. I have tried everything to make this happen on my Fascinate. I upgraded to 2.2 and even tried the GPS Aids app. So my question to you guys is will the GPS ever work properly on this device or is there any other tricks I can try?
Thanks!
Did you update the radio?
My gps work great. Even the voice is much better.

Uh. What issues are you even having? Although I do have some minor issues also. It connects perfect but every few minutes it drop GPS signal for about a minute and then picks it back upnot sure when this happened or how long or what version it started on as I barely ever use it.

I can never get a lock on my location, even after letting it sit for several minutes. It is always in the right area but off with a massive blue circle.

He's got at least VZW location services on due to the massive blue circle, which uses cellular triangulation. Wifi can get you a smaller circle, but doesn't work as well as GPS.
My phone has been totally unable to get a GPS lock for quite a while (since upgrading to EB01 based roms, but even on DI01 and DJ05 it was incredibly pathetic), even with updating the A-GPS data and having VZW & Google location services on.
I have tried all suggested issues. Do you think it is a hardware issue with my phone and I should trade it in or am I still missing something?
Sounds like you might have bad hardware. Since EB01 I just recently realized I didn't even need to have vzw or google locations checked. I get a lock just using stand alone service. 8/11 birdies locked in 18sec with an error of 13ft inside my house with GPS Status. And that was after a full wipe and rom flash.
good day.
Since EB01 happened I've had a near instant lock every single time.
I had the exact same prob. My gps problems have been completely intermittent, sometimes it would lock on and other times it would not. No matter what rom or radio I flash. But this is what seems to work pretty well.
1. Don't use the gps toggle button on the pulldown. Use the settings.
2. Use google maps v4.7 and don't let it update.
Hope this helps...

I've been using the option from the pull down menu with mixed results.
I've started going into the location & security and enabling/disabling gps from their with much much better results.
Thanks for that tip .
With SC 2.4 ROM GPS was working GREAT!!
I updated to SC 2.6 and I cannot get a lock at all.
With Wi-Fi on the best i can do is get my location and the directions. I can only guess that maybe the clock was changed / tweeked in the later versions.
When I get time I will be rolling back to SC 2.4 ROM.
I have determined it is not a hardware issue as someone else in my area is experiencing the same issues. I updated to EB01 and super clean 2.6. My lock is about 50% now. Either the service is great and locks right on or doesn't at all with the massive blue haze. Someone suggested going back to super clean 2.4?
Once again thanks for all the help guys!

this is the key. and one of the main reasons I went back to DL09 on my phone until the next build comes out.
if you turn it on in settings-->location&security it will work, and then you can turn it off/on via the notification bar for a while, until you reboot your phone...
Is it google navigation having the issue?
I continue to play around with this issue, and am noticing people talking about still being able to be picked up through GPS tools, but not get locked elsewhere. I am assuming that, like me, they are referring to google navigator giving the message "Searching for GPS". Oddly enough, Google latitude is accurately showing my location even when google navigator is telling me it is "Searching for GPS" and drops my turn by turn instructions. I saw one post from cableguy1 to use google maps 4.7 and disable updates, which I would be interested in trying. Anyone know where I can get v4.7?
*Never mind. Didn't pay attention to the fact that my Wifi was on, and the location was a couple houses off. It simply looked precise in comparison to the big blue circle I'd seen while driving. Sorry for the misinformation.*
SC2.4 doesn't have any locking issues for my wife. Good to go there, but not sure if we're just lucky.
2.4 working well
After finding a couple other threads addressing GPS issues, I've noticed people with sc2.4 to have the least problems. Flashed the AIO Odin version, and have had an instant lock so far all morning. Very nice to have google navigaion back

Google Maps GPS issues

GPS used to work great with Google Maps on this phone but the most recent several updates have messed it up and it will only approximate my location based on the tower (it has a blue circle instead of my actual location).
I thought I was going crazy, but then I realized that a lot of other people are having similar issues based on feedback comments left on the Google Maps App in the Play store.
Rolling back the update to the original version fixes this issue. I've tried reinstalling the new version several times which has not fixed it. (BTW, I know the GPS is working fine because Bing Maps locks on instantly).
Please let me know if anyone else has this issue and how to fix it if there is a fix.
Thanks.

Same problem here, using 4.5.141. Maybe ICS will fix it as most reports are from gingerbread users. Not much of a problem for me as navigation is not available in my country.
I find that going into google navigation first, wait for gps lock (should be pretty fast this way instead of waiting couple of minutes in google maps) then tap on the upper left hand corner and select google maps works wayyyy better.
Had this too, or something like it. My GPS would never lock and my location would just be a giant blue circle. Turns out I was on an old radio (something .30), so I flashed the newest for AT&T (N_01.77.37P). Now my GPS works great and gets street level location in about 10 seconds.
I have that radio already version on the stock 2.3.6 moto rom
Same problem here. No gps position in google maps anymore. Other gps apps work fine.
Since the first gingerbread version, the atrix returns the gps accuracy always with a 0 when is has a gpx fix. Normally it should give a value greater than zero. You can easily check this with a gps test app. only with wifi or cellular position it return a correct value.
public float getAccuracy ()
I think that now google maps compares the accuracy values and ignores location providers with 0 accuracy, because they are supposed to be invalid.
My own app has no problem with gps on an atrix, because I do not compare both values, I switch only if gps fix is lost or returned.
Let's hope that Moto will fix gps provider accuracy in ics.

Nexus 4 GPS problem

I just got my nexus 4 2 days ago and everything's great. Its running on all stock and havent really installed anything other than a few games and a launcher.
This morning i tried using the google maps app and Updated it to the latest version. The problem is it cannot lock on my location. I tried rebooting and on/ff all the location settings that i know of. Also installed gps stat app and it says that there are satellites available in my area.
The gps icon at the top left corner of the screen DOES NOT blink. And When i pull down the notication bar all i can see is "searching for gps"
Is my n4 defective?
PS. Im sorry if there are similar threads like this. I cant seem to find them.

If you haven't installed a 3rd party kernel, then I would say to first clear all the data in the app first. Reboot and try opening the gps. Are you opening the navi from the app or from maps?
If clearing the data doesn't work, try uninstalling the update. If that doesn't work try uninstalling the app and reinstalling maps.
Do not worry bout not getting a gps fixed. My first GPS fixed was achieved bout 10-20min and its a AGPS fixed, it was only after 2weeks of normal usage that my Nexus 4 finally can get a cold GPS fixed. I just go along with my daily chores like navigation and jogging app and wah la 2 weeks later my agps switch to gps fixed.BTW i'm in Singapore
Thanks for the replies. Its working now. I think turning the phone off for a minute fixed the issue. Gps locks within 10 seconds now.

And me...thank-you....I was about to return my N4 (would have been for the 3rd time btw - previous issues not related to GPS however...Device would shut down on its own, SIM cards not recognized). Anyhow...I appreciate your post...even though its been some time ago, it may yet help another. Thanks!
Ketchuppp app could cause this too
Since this post comes up as one of the first in Google I thought I would add this here for future visitors. I have had Yahoo Weather installed for some time without issue so I did a slow process of elimination and found that now the Ketchuppp app was causing my GPS to not turn on automatically. I assume this will be fixed in the future, since it seems to affect recently updated/launched apps that access the GPS.

GPS issue.... Won't hold lock

Has anyone else been experiencing GPS not holding lock or not locking at all? There are tons of people having the problem in the Google groups.... Surprising to not see more about it here..... Let's get the word out if you do.... Mine will not keep a lock no matter what.... Many resets and other nonsense.... It will sometimes lock but loose it on the move or just drop the lock without moving....
Here are some of the fixes that have been tried / tested:
resetting back to stock
removing google services
downgrading maps
changing settings for WIFI
user data wipe
clear cache
Some of those may temporarily fix it, but any sort of long term use the issue always comes back.

yeah, there are been several people that "claim" to have fixed it but... it's not really fixed. there have been many different "solutions" thrown around over in the groups but, again none of them worked long term. it might work for a little while, but not for very long. anyone that has a N7 i suggest you test it out.... Try bringing up maps, cache the offline map and try to use the GPS to navigate somewhere.... It will drop off everytime.
Google is going to have to release a patch, that is going to be the only fix!!

so... what's the deal here. I don't see how more people aren't having this problem with the responses on the google site. have people been successful using it? or do u not use it at all anyway? or is it because you have a ROM that it works on? please let me know.
My temporary solution (as suggested by others) is to ONLY allow 1 app which may access GPS.
So I disabled Earth, Maps, GPS Tester (some widgets may use GPS too) ... only leave Sygic navigator. I've navigated a few long drives without issue. Re-enable those apps will bring back troubles.
This works with different ROMs, so it's not a ROM problem.
Hopefully Google will have a fix soon.
yeah, that only seems to work for a short period of time too! thanks though!
well, at least it's out in the open now and it will force googles hand!

I haven't touched Google services, just simply disabled (GPS-accessing) apps such as Maps, Earth, GPS Tester.
I only left one app (Sygic) on my Tab. The last few days, I've had no issue with GPS navigation. Everytime I've tried,
I got GPS locks within a few seconds. I've done a few drives (mostly under 1-hr) and everything is normal and accurate.
I've not seen it fail yet.
It isn't 'failing' at start, necessarily. It won't keep lock after stopping and starting.
Can you enter address. navigate to the address. Stop and them do it again?

Like going to work ... going to lunch .. going home .. I fired up the app fresh (I clear recent apps often)
haha.. I had quite a few struggles since day one, so I know how to make it fail.
I can start-close/stop-restart Sygic multiple times without failing. But if I re-enable those (GPS) apps and
switch between them ---> GPS no-longer works.
I have never had a issue using Osmand GPS yesterday. Locked on quickly each time after device was put to sleep about 5 times in a moving car ( i was the passenger at the time).
joined the forum to say i'm having the same issue with GPS (and possibly compass). looks like google is aware so that is at least good.
bought the tablet to use in an in-dash car install. loved it until yesterday and today when i started doing more in car function testing. wanted to test the google maps app out out while driving but the compass oriented me cocked in the wrong direction and spun around like a dradle before gps lost me completely. for a bit i thought omg, maybe it's so cheap because they got rid of the GPS chip.
i have to say i hate the google maps application right now too. the old google navigation app was incredible for "chase view" which gave you. the new google maps app is supposed to integrate the nav feature but you must be on a specified route. it's terrible, going to search for the old APK.

thanks! just downloaded and will try it out (once this gps issue gets fixed).
Suggestion to try by others.
"Go into settings, all apps, locate ‘network location’, clear cache, clear data, reboot and try using GPS again. Seen this behavior on another device where it didn’t like the backed up app data restored from the previous device."
NONE of the "fixes" are permanent. As soon as you start moving it loses your location, even if it hold it for an hour.... IT WILL eventually drop out again. All these "fixes" are a waste of time, i have done every single one posted in all teh forums they have talked about N7s. and it ALWAYS goes back to not working again.
it's just frustrating to have a brand new device that doesn't work properly, and then on top of it to do all these silly fixes and research for none of them to work either. bout to take it back and say forget it.

GPS Issues Nexus 6p Android 6.0.1

Hello people!,
i need support regarding GPS fix and lock issues of my Nexus 6p. it is on latest build MHC19Q. it takes more then 25 seconds outdoors to first lock to satellites. and when i start moving on car or walk, it could not keep the lock, it starts finding satellites again and again. it was fine on any of 6.0.0 build. i tried to dig out the problem and here are my findings;
i did the factory resent through recovery. (it is not rooted)
i only installed the GPS Status app & GPS TEST app. All google apps were allowed to update. Problem remained.
I reset the fone again. Again only installed GPS Status & GPS Test app. Didn't allow google apps to update to their latest versions. My GPS is working fine. passed all the tests in flying colors. So is it google apps which is bugging the GPS? what can be done to resolve this issue.
The cell is not rooted and on stock Rom.
Thanks A Lot for all the Help

wow... no answers,
well i have an update. i found out that gps only bugs me when i am on 3G network, in any perticular area. if i move out of that area, in any other towers range it starts working. it works fine on 2G though. if i toggle between 2G & 3G some times GPS starts working fine in that perticular area as well. I am still experimenting.

Sounds similar or the same as my issue. My GPS can't keep up while I'm driving, will just get stuck in one location for 5-10 minutes at a time, if I hold it out the window it suddenly locks again in just a couple seconds.

found one more thing, if my GPS is buggy or laggy, turning of the 3G Data will suddenly make GPS to work smoothly. Locks in less then 3 seconds while driving, Locks in Less then 2 seconds while out doors. But if i turn on the Data, GPS again stops working, lock will take almost 20-30 seconds and if i start moving, phone will lost the lock many times. But no problems at all if the 3G Data is Off. I use a app "GMD Full Screen Immersive Mode" i think this app bugs Google Map, maybe it Bugs GPS as well. i have uninstalled it and keep on searching for this behaviour
Gps.conf
You need to replace /system/etc/gps.conf by a valid configuration. Just search in Google by "Google gps.conf" (without quotes). You will need root.
Reason is that Google delivers Android with an invalid gps.conf file, for Nexus and other devices.
For best performance enter the nearest ntp servers, search Google for ntp server list.

Will modifying gps.conf break systemless root?

No, gps.conf is just a text file. You can modify or replace without break root or affect system stability. It's just gps configuration.

GPS is working fine now after latest 7.0 build. I don't have signal issues any more

You mean the android N? I'm downloading it and will try it asap. Couldn't stand loosing gps signal every time I'm on the move
Yup. Android N. Early builds I was having all kinds of problems including GPS but with the latest build NPD90G everything seams to be working perfectly

Hey, just to update if there's any user still having issues, I tried android N, gps getting better but still it is not good enough. I then went to Huawei, get it checked and they confirm it is hardware issue. They replaced the phone and so far no issue

You can also install an app to inject Agps data periodically. I use Agps Injection Widget
