Hey,
This morning I tried to install OTA android update like an idiot just how you'd do it on a non-rooted phone.
Now if I try to boot up my phone it'll go on normally for under a minute and then power off and enter the TWRP menu.
What do?

keep it on your external SDard>>twrp>>backup . then insert to phone ...go to twrp>restore from sdcard.
there is also OTG support in twrp you can connect your USB drive to restore.

TWRP doesn't seem to recognize the file; nothing shows up in Restore -> from sdcard (also when I browse the directories in Install sdcard -> TWRP -> Backup is empty)
I moved the ZIP file downloaded from step 2. of http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-play/general/rom-xt1563-brasil-stock-6-0-twrp-t3272979.
What am I doing wrong?

Found the problem, which was that I didn't create a sub-folder named as my serial number as the guide didn't mention that. I think I got everything working now, thanks a ton for the help!

thanks for the solution. I didn't know that. I generally copy the whole backup folder and while placing backups from external source I place it inside my serial number folder.

Hey there,
So I take you formatted the sdcard as internal?
If that is the case then it might be caused by the fact that the sdcard is now encrypted.
I think the newer TWRP version (3.0.0) can read the encrypted sdcard.

Yes. Or with an app called Flashify.
But flashing a newer version of the recovery is not guaranteed to work.
You might have to format your sdcard as portable again.

I really want to root my Moto E4 (For xposed and fake VR) but I really dont want to mess anything up! this is my favorite phone and really don't wanna mess anything up, my phone is already decrypted and the bootloader was unlocked via Motorola's bootunlocker tool from their website How would I root my phone safely without messing things up. Most one click root apps don't work with this (from what I read is cause the model's bootloader is normally locked) so I cant use those! And I also don't know which variant mine is but my phone is a Sprint version.
Help?
With a little more snooping you would have found your answers. Anyway, the Sprint version is good to go...it's a Qualcomm variant, so look for threads with Qualcomm in the title.
To root, follow this guide.
Good luck!

Be sure to read-up on f2fs workarounds if you plan root with Magisk -and- use systemless modules like Xposed. There are several good options; I opted for the Magisk module as I didn't want to flash a patched kernel. Reformatting the data partition to ext4 also works but you'll loose some of the benefits of f2fs. You can find more details in the Magisk installation guide.

Did you select format data, or format each partition? In twrp select reboot, then bootloader. Then scroll to start and tap power button. Sometimes formatting data causes it to boot to recovery.
Didn't you see in the root instructions it says you need to have an SD card? That's where you put all the root files like no verity and magisk.
You can always flash stock with rsdlite. Easy peasy.

So I have a Samsung Galaxy J5 SM-J500F which suddenly refused to boot in any way (normal, recovery, download). I booted TWRP from external SD card but it shows Internal Storage (0 MB). Can't mount or do anything. Is there something to do or is it a hardware issue?

I can't. Everything that I am flashing through Odin goes into the external SD card. For the example, tried to flash TWRP and it flashed onto the external SD card. And I cannot go into download mode without the external SD card. Trying to remove it before pressing volume up to confirm makes Odin say no PIT file found and when I flash the PIT it gives error.

The only way to restore the phone is by flashing stock firmware in odin.
Twrp and everything else will go to the SD card only the stock firmware will flash to the phone.
Enter download mode WITH the SD card in and go through the steps on Odin to flash stock firmware and absolutely nothing else, no twrp, no custom firmware it has to be 100% pure stock rom or it will flash to the SD card and not internal storage.
Stock firmware contains the necessary PIT files and everything so don't try flashing different PIT files.
This is the only method to restore the device

Dont put twrp on the SD card.
Boot into download and just flash stock.
Once the device is restored do what you want and install twrp and whatever you want but don't do it at the start.

You're sure its not hardware related?
The only thing I can think of now is to try with different versions of the stock rom (different country firmware)

I don't know. This is the story of how it got bricked:
Powered it on some days ago and it showed the Samsung logo with the "odin mode" text in the top-left corner. I thought I accidentally entered download mode so I held down volume down+power until the screen turned black. And after that it didn't boot at all until I managed to make this bootable SD card.
What I find strange is that Odin keeps flashing on my SD card instead of the internal storage. If I enter download mode then remove the SD card and try to flash via Odin it complains that no PIT partition was found. If I have TWRP installed on the SD card, download mode says "CURRENT BINARY: Custom" but as soon as I try to flash via Odin the official recovery.img (it flashes before it hangs at system.img.ext4) and restart the phone it says "CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official". Also if I power it on from the SD card normally or in recovery it shows the blue screen that wants me to connect to Smart Switch but the app does not recognize the phone.
Another thing is that if I reboot into download mode with the SD card but only press power up to confirm after I remove the SD card the first thing to show in the top-left corner is "ddi: mmc_read_failed" and if I try to flash with Odin, Odin says no PIT partition found and the phone shows in the top-left corner the last line as "ODIN : flash read failure".
If I power it on without the SD card it doesn't do anything, not even vibrate.
