Just a quick on. Would you devs and general hackers be interested in cheaper alternitive?
Same specs just won't look as nice. and probably only do HDMI out instead of speaker outputs. Also made in china to drive down the cost.
Im in the process of getting a prototype worked up.
Anybody interested?
Here is a question for you.
Would you be happy to buy it at cost price or a slightly inflated price where I could then send free devices to developers?
I do not wish nor want to make money on this product.
sounds good

yeah big time but its gotta really hit the price point of a google TV to be logical...
`
what price point are you aiming for?
Sub-$100, I would be interested.
Hoping for sub $200 but I will try and drive the price down as low as I can. It will have the same CPU/GPU as the Nexus Q and if possible same WiFi Bluetooth and NFC chip to avoid and driver issues when you great developers do a straight up port.

yeah it would need to run the same components. i don't see devs going out and buying the model that is basically a knock off and supporting it (no offence, i would love your knock off version). I would be curious as to if removing the amp would mess that kinda stuff up? i suggest you talk with devs first and see. I feel as if the amp is a lackluster, and extra cost feature not really needed as buying a external sound system is cheap these days.
all in all i love your idea and would like more updates on where your at!
thanks!
The product was never designed to be a knock off of the Nexus Q. It just so happens that they have the same basic hardware. This device was intended to be a Android Media Player that was running crap hardware. I watched I/O and seen the beautiful device and after looking at it realised its the same CPU/GPU and the idea sprung to mind. I don't want to market it as a knock off Nexus Q but a Android Media player with hack-ability that can if you so wish, pretend to be a Nexus Q in terms of software.
sorry didnt mean to knock you like that saying "knock off" haha that has a bad sense that comes with it. let me rephrase. if you could produce a device that would run the exact same software, Dev ports as well, i would snatch that up in a heartbeat as i feel the development on the Q will be greater with google pumping out 6,000 of these devices to devs at I/O.
are you thinking of starting a kickstarter? if you plan to jump into anything like that please post the link so i can check it all out!
If you need someone to bounce ideas off of im open to comment and try to help. im an aspiring dual major in CGT and entrepreneurial class so if you wanted some models or business ideas im down to talk.
Quick update on the price point. I think it will be impossible to do this for sub $100. The processor in the device itself is costing $60 alone.

cant work on mass orders at lower cost? that seems high but i guess i could be wrong =P
I think two versions could have some success:
1. Basically same parts, exact clone except the design and maybe the lack of an amp and fancy leds. Basically you can run the same Rom without any bigger Modifications. At least 30% cheaper.
2. Heavily striped down version with another soc, no nfc, maybe even no bt. Just hdmi, mains and audio. Allwinner A10 comes into mind. Pricetag under ~$90.
The Tegra3 is rumored to cost $25 in the Nexus 7, if you can get descent quantity order i think the omap should be in that price range too.
Currently my order is only 1000 orders. Because I have to way to guarantee I can even move that amount! Currently working on a kickstarter style project page.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Definitely interested in an open alternative to the Q.
You should definitely try Kickstarter for this. You should be able to get a large order to drive down the price if its popular enough
I am not sure what market you are targeting with your planned android media player.
With a built in speaker amp, the Nexus Q differentiates itself from the pack. As such, it can compete in the Sonos type markets, and in markets like all of the "iPod Docks" that you see littered in cubicles everywhere. Considering Sonos charges $350+ and Bose charges $250+, the Q can be considered somewhat competitive, considering it's Made in America status.
By removing the amp, now you are turning it into a Google TV / Apple TV / Roku / WDTV Live / etc competitor. This is a very intense market, and if you can't get the made in china price under $100, I think it will be hard to compete. (And there are already small / cheap devices that plug into a TV: http://www.theverge.com/2012/5/18/3028202/mk802-android-usb-hdmi-stick )
As I said the CPU im looking at $60 before shipping. I plan to sell the the device at cost + shipping. Their is a kickstarter page coming (Not actually kickstarter as im not in the US)
The AMP is of no use to me as the device would go into my current setup.
Also being almost deaf I personally have no use for it
How's this coming out???!?! I'd like to see where this goes I'm interested

I'm well aware QUYA? Has absolutely smashed their target and probably any chance this device would take off. However if OK able to get enough interest I can order in numbers where I the cost is low enough. In the mean time I'm waiting on some renders before I publish a crowd source funded page.

I am thinking of buying a A200, price has dropped on it quite a bit, only 250 bucks. But I don't see a dedicated section for it on this forum, but someone said the closest thing to it would be the a500, are there any roms available/compatible with the a200?

Yes, there's no dedicated section for it. Acer loves to put out several products similar in nature, and the 100/200 is just not a popular device. Most people had the 500/501. So they piggyback in the 500 forum as they as so similar.
As with Dev work, There's a CM10 rom inwork for your device. Also, I believe there are 2 kernels as well which may work. EzTerry and Linuxsociety. You can check with the Devs to be sure. Pretty sure Linuxsociety can work. But check.
As far as custom roms, you are on your own. Might be a good time for you to take up modding and theming

Why is it not a popular device? Spec wise its pretty good, nice resolution screen, plenty of space, fast, how is it not popular?

Because most of the people own an a500 or 501. When released, it was considered to be the high end of things competing with Transformer, Samsung GT, and a slew of chinese clones.
When the 200 was released, most 500 folks didn't see a reason to switch. So hence "not popular". In fact, not a lot of the higher end 51x and 70x devices have been sold either. You can check the 51x/70x forums and it's basically a ghost town. But Dev work is slowly increasing on the 70x as it is now, especially once I get my 70x back from repair We now have a CWM that hopefully won't hard brick our tabs like the previous versions

All models of the Iconia are "Hit and Miss" when it concerns the Mic. Some work, others don't. Fortunately my 501 and 701 work well.

I've been googling it, some say that this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1792618 works good on their a200. Do not know if there's something to be aware before...
Its OK but not raving about it, many things they could have done better, Photosphere? why the heck did you leave this out? I brought an expensive charging pad thinking great the S4 has the induction coil buit in, NO its another purchase and a different back, why not include this on a high end phone its not complex electronics, laser keyboard? they could have done it......
Maybe photosphere was restricted by google, not Samsung? Is it any other 4.2 phone that isn't a nexus device?
Maybe you should of read the specs first before committing to buying accessories? If no specs available, research first...
In fact, shame you didn't ask here before your purchase rather than after. Not quite sure how that's Samsungs bad?

Hello all Note 10.1 2014 owners.
I am starting this thread to see who is interested in a Hyperdrive ROM.
If you are not familiar, it is a ROM developed by sbreen94 on predominantly Samsung Galaxy devices. Probably one of the best and most popular ROMs out there. Check a few of the Galaxy development threads and you will understand.

He has been developing for the old Note 10.1 for a while, he does not own a Note 10.1 2014. However, he said if we can put a 2014 edition in his hands he would be more than willing to create the ROM.
Is there any interest in this? I figure a 16gb refurb would do which can be had for around $350.
haspampel and hashcheck have developed two great KK ROMS so far, but it seems development for this tablet is otherwise lacking. This would be a superb addition.

UPDATE 5/23/2014
Everything looks to be in place. Nabour's costs have been covered, see her post if interested in the details. Any further donations should be directed to sbreen as additional people see fit.
We will now patiently await, and I stress patiently . Any additional insights could be posted in this thread while sbreen is developing but let's not be bothering him. To quote Fat Sam from the movie Fletch "When it comes, it comes"
Thanks again to all who made this happen!
Depends... we would get him for wi-fi only version or lte?
:good: If users around here are interested in this, i would be happy to make and support a rom for you!
We really need a custom rom for P601 badly, I know that would be a big hit here now, as currently there is only 1 that is not upgraded that often.
Ran Hyperdrive ROM on my ATT S3 for a long time before exploring KitKat Rom options. Lots of options and customization. I'd definitely be interested if a ROM was developed.
Definately interested! SM-P600 here...
After how Scrolser took our money and ran I don't really trust donating to anyone anymore.

I'm sure you're a nice person and all and well respected here on XDA. Problem is... so was Scrolser and he left us out to dry. A well respected Dev and he got our money, bought the tablet and ended up selling it later while promising to still update our note's (which hasn't happened BTW). Yeah... that left a pretty sour taste in my mouth.

Guys, sbreen94 is the real deal. He currently supports 4 or 5 devices. He just doesn't get a new one and forgets about the old ones like some devs do. I will start off the bidding at $20.00 for the wifi model (P600). This would be a most excellent addition to the Note 10.1 2014 community.

Guys, I would totally support Mr. Breen. I have used Hyperdrive on my Galaxy Note 3 and it is an amazing rom. He is an experienced, top-rated developer.
Let me know how this works - do we just start sending donations, or is it more organized than that.
Barbara
Yes!
I would love to see this rom available for this device!
P600
I would be ok to trow some bucks in for p605, but i doubt there will be anyone else, since we are so few. (i think?)
You can count on 10$ donation from me if you decide to start working on it.
Donations etc.
I figured it would be for the P600 since that is what a majority of people probably own, and it is the easier of the three to be had for a lower price.
I don't know how to organize donations. Perhaps we should do it bounty style with people posting what they can contribute, I'll keep track.
Put me down for $40.
sbreen is legit. He has always well supported all of his roms for all of his devices. I think you'll have an impossible time finding anyone to say anything negative about his work.
Let's keep this ball rollin'

Thanks for the support guys. I would say let's go for the Wi-Fi model which is the P600 I'm assuming. I think posting the amount you are able to contribute in this thread is good so we can keep track. I should probably be able to chip in like 50$ of my own funds toward it

As the title suggests I'm looking for anyone who has a damaged device or spares knocking about? I found out the problem with my own shift was power distribution based and when I tried to repair it I have blown the entire board -_- I have a very limited budget at the minute but have seen a shift going for about £100 so lush come to shove that might be my only option.
Only other option would be for someone to be very kind and donate their shift? Long shot but if you don't ask, you don't get!
