[Q] Doubts on Ram - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought a Nexus 10 from UK, if I check hw specs with cpu-z from play storie, it is all ok but it show only 1 gb of RAM. Hw name is manta, android version is 4.4.2 Kot49h. There are two versions with different RAM size or what?

1 GB is reserved for the GPU so there's only 1 GB left for the rest. Do this is normal don't worry.

SGS3 vs HTC One X RAM

Hello guys... I'm galaxy S3 user. I just want to know that Galaxy s3 & htc one x has same 1 GB ram but for galaxy s3 its showing 778 mb ram in hardware information but htc showing proper 1 gb ram. why this is? Infact, i noticed all htc have same ram as in hardware information bar. Mean s3 have less ram acording to htc one x?
Some RAM is reserved for camera, hardware decoder, etc. I doubt HTC used separate memory chip for each of these, so ONE X software must be reporting false values.
BTW, there are 833 mbytes of RAM available on latest JB leaks, and enthusiasts are looking for a way to increase this number further.
How dare you mention that name here
Be gone foul beast, back to the lair I say, back!
Just enjoy your phone.

Reserved for other functions
Stacks with my previous memory changes: total memory: 857mB for now.
Perseus kernel dev succeeded to increase more rams at jb ;D
system used
Thanx all for giving information. But some says that ram reserved for system & some says reserved for camera & hardware.. hhhmmm then what about htc ram? Is it shows proper 1GB ram included reserved system ram or excluded system ram as sgs3 has.??? By mean as shows 778 mb out of 1GB then where is 222 mb ram which is left. Is 222 mb ram reserved for system use?
One X has more free Ram but everyone who tried both says S3 uses it's Ram better, and the US proves bigger isn't always better.

You are wrong. This has nothing to do with the phones themselves but chip manufacturers. Look at the HTC One X LTE versions, they only have 600mb of RAM.
Yes the International version has close to 1GB of RAM free. This is mostly due to Tegra 3 having dedicated video ram to their GPU where the Exynos and S4 do not.

aahh.. means s3 does not have video ram???
Yes, we can squeeze out as much ram as possible but I believe a good portion of it will always be reserved for hardware.
I did a lot of studies with my US One X and the International One X.
Anyways, to answer your question it is the Tegra 3 chip set that has 1GB of RAM, it's like that on the Asus transformer also.
Compare the US One S and One X, you see the same Ram usage pretty much and same SoC. But the international with Tegra 3 and everything else that uses a Tegra 3 from what I have seen (there might be some with 4glte radios that require ram also) has 1GB of RAM.

it mean tegra 3 chip is more faster phone than galaxy s3.??? bcoz tegra 3 chip has 1 GB of RAM.

No.
The S3 has 1gb of ram too.

No, not at all. RAM, CPU and (if the gui is properly programmed) GPU can all affect how your phone functions and feels. The S3 uses a more better engineered chip set than the Tegra in the CPU and GPU department.
Most importantly is software though. As the way things are, if Android doesn't figure out a way to optimize their OS to universally work for any kind of hardware it might lose out to WP8.
Not in the hacking department though since WP8 will be closed source.

thnx for giving kind information.... I respect your answere..
Tegras don't have dedicated GPU RAM, they don't differ to the Exynos in the way they handle that. The reason is purely software based, and some SoCs having reserved memory spaces for internal functions. I have now 856mB useable on my kernel for example.
The leaked jb firmwares gives you 833mb ram.

See that would make sense if every Tegra device from different companies like Asus, htc and Motorola, etc would have different ram uses since they all build their roms with custom ui, etc. Every company has their own custom kernels as well. But that is not the case, or is it a giant coincidence most if not all the Tegra devices show .950 gb free of memory? Including the Nexus 7.

Sorry but no you don't know what you are talking about, Nvidia does the basic platform kernel for their SoC, the manufacturers don't do anything more than adapt it. ROM also doesn't have anything to do with it

After 4.4 update, total RAM space decreased?

I've heard that Android 4.4 reduced its memory usage.
But after I updated 4.4 on my Nexus 10, I found that the total and free RAM space is even decreased compared to when it was 4.3.
Now my Nexus 10 shows only 1.1GB of total RAM. I remember it was a little larger when it was 4.3 (like 1.3GB?)
As you know, Nexus 10 is a device with 2GB of RAM. And now we can only see half of the RAM available? I think it's funny.

More RAM is allocated to the GPU. Allows better performance, but slightly reduced multi tasking capabilities.

[Q] RAM missing?

Hi
I´m kind of new here but still haven´t found an answer why my Nexus only shows 1097 RAM instad of 2000? Even tried different hardware checker and they all tell me the same. Have I made I bad flash?

The 2GB ram on the device must accommodate both the operating system and graphics Ram before any apps are loaded. So what you see is normal. This is no different for laptops. Also the 16 or 32 GB internal storage shows less after formatting and Android OS plus Google apps (Gapps) are installed. At least with the Nexus 10 you have much less bloatware compared to other Tablets (eg. Samsung).

I understand that you use RAM when things are installed, But I still dont get it. When I was on stock it showed in settings 2 gb RAM. And now Hardware info (app) System RAM 1097?. Same with Clean sweeper.

Nexus 10 has never shown 2gb available, I've had it since launch and I believe the most I've ever seen was back on 4.2 was about 1400MB or so, and it has gone down from there on each update. You never get what they advertise on the box, every single one of my devices has less than whats advertised, my Note 3 is supposed to have 3gb available, but really its only 2.38 after its said and done..
1098 is normal on 4.4.2 for N10, I've attached a shot from mine ... I can only assume most of it is being reserved for the GPU and its super high resolution.

Hi,
As already stated here, just clearing a little the information for you .
The Nexus 10 has a huge screen resolution, therefore it requires a more powerful GPU, even having a pretty powerful graphic processors which is the MALI, it's not powerful enough for the 1600p screen, so they allocated ≈1GB to the graphic unit to prevent any possible issues.
Also, there are some apps running in background, so it takes some RAM too.
Hope this clarifies a little ,

Thank for your help:good:
I did notice that with slim kat 4.2.2 I have 1647 ram available and with 4.4.2 slim kat I had 1099.
so I thought that Kit Kat uses less RAM but I don't really see it with those comparisons.

Note 4 N910u 3gb ram on 32bit / 4gb on 64bit?

Anybody with some info about this screenshot?
32bit windows can max run 3gb ram, do andoid work the same way?
I see note 4 n910u have a 4gb ram module inside..
Never seen info about this, or never see any info about 3 or 4gb ram.
Greets from Holland.
No idea bout the ram module, but a 32bit OS can support 4GB!! The reality is that not all of that RAM is made available to the OS all the time as the system reserves portions
regards

No it doesn't mean that.
Its telling you that the type of memory module being use is a 4 Gigabit, notice the lower case b, b = bit , upper case B = Byte.
Samsung is using 6x4Gigabit modules to give us 3GigaBytes of RAM. There is 8 Bits to a Byte.
And the usable amount is whats left over after they give a portion of it to the GPU for video processing.
Did you see the line "detection needs to be improved" in the bottom?

A 32bit os can only address 3.75ish GB of RAM which most just round up to 4GB anyway

Hi,
no, that's because some RAM is used by system.

New galaxy s10 plus help needed..

So I recently bought a new s10 plus but I made a post about it already but I haven't received the phone so I didn't know anything about it, today I received the phone and checked the ram and its only 8GB is this normal or is it suppose to be like 12 or 10 GB ram? (my phone is 12 GB ram and 1 TB variant). Also, is the screen supposed to flicker a lot when it opens up the camera because mine do?
Download Device Info HW from the play.store and check the specs
Anything more than 6 gigs of RAM on an Android phone is nothing but a marketing gimmick. The vast majority of people don't need more than 6 gigs of RAM on a laptop--according to Microsoft the minimum RAM requirement to run Windows 10 is 1GB which is stretching it but 6GB is more than enough to provide an extremely smooth experience for anyone who isn't a power user. With that in mind what practical purpose could having 8GB or 12GB of RAM on an Android phone possibly serve?
The expanding RAM numbers were a gimmick to convince the gullible that they needed to purchase expensive new phones--these are the same kind of people who don't question why they need a higher resolution display on a phone with a 10" display than on a 55" television screen.
Now that more RAM and higher resolution are the norm the latest gimmick is smartphone displays with higher refresh rates. Most people won't actually be able to see any difference but that hardly matters if it sells phones.

So you already stated you have purchased a 1TB 12GB ram s10.. and you received an 8GB ram s10? Where did you buy it from? I would bring it back since it may be the wrong one or it may be fake depending where you purchased it from.
How much did you pay for the device?

It is possible the wrong product got delivered to you, If your order correctly states that your device should be a 12 GB variant, you need to do a RMA.
Just to be sure update your device, for checking your RAM, go to settings -> Device Care -> Memory. At the top it should list, there should a be a bar and just under it your used memory/total memory.
For checking storage, go to settings -> Device Care -> Storage. At the top it should list, there should a be a bar and just under it your used storage/total storage.
If either of these don't match your order, please check with the seller, you should only get what you paid for.
As for the screen flicker, it really shouldn't happen, on my device opening the camera app is a rather smooth animation.

Hi sir, I wasn't very clear , sorry.. i currently have 8.5 GB ram available with no apps opened and seller confirmed it was original although I am still afraid coz I bought it not from official shop. In us dollar it's about 800 usd but in my country it's Rm 3000.. I am not sure its suppose to have 12 GB of ram if I have no apps opened or is it normal to have 8.5 gb of ram bcoz it might eat some ram for the system to run so I opened this thread.
Android is designed to fill most of the RAM at all times. In simple terms, empty RAM is wasted RAM.
As you start using apps, Android will keep your most commonly used apps in RAM, so that they launch quickly each timeyou open them or switch between them.
