I'm on a rooted MJ7 firmware. After enabling AdAway I've tried thepcspy.com's adblocker test which says it works, however when I tried going to nytimes.com all ads are still present. I tried using mobile data BTW.
I've disabled Chrome's data compression feature and made sure there are no proxy settings in my APN.

Hi,
I'm on MJ7, too and I use AdFree without any problems. In my opinion it is working better than AdAway. You should try it out
Haha OK sure. Oh and one other issue to clarify, I tried ABP and it blocks ads but not hide them. So for nytimes the ad images all can't load. I see the generic "image can't be found" graphic. Is this normal?

It doesn't work on mine? What's wrong with my phone ugh. Just to confirm it WILL block web ads right? Can you send me a link with ads that yours block so I can confirm if mine works?

Epiphany: maybe adfree and AdAway DO work, but they don't block the ads I see on nytimes because they are not in the host file. I read somewhere that ABP is more powerful in this aspect because it uses regex instead of the host file. And because it subscribes to EasyList it blocks web ads.
Anyone can verify?

Hi I have tried a few ad blockers from the market but can't find one to work with a custom ROM. I am currently on AOKP.

For the web just use firefox and adblock extension.
I use the adaway in the playstore (I think that's what it was called). That works. You can also block ads at the router level if you have ddwrt.
I was talking about blocking ads for apps and adaway isn't working. Also tried the one from jrummy

Adaway worked and still works great for me on every stock or custom rom on every device i own. Never had any problem with it.
Too bad google just decided to remove all ad-blocking software from the Play Store.

Yes, ALL ad blockers are removed from the market. Google did this due to an agreement with developers.

I've had to remove adblock plus because it kept tripping the unstable connection problem. I was previously using bigtincan's adfree but it stopped working. Kept telling me to update bc the one I had was out of date. Went directly to big tins website downloaded again and I kept getting the same error message. What are other options that are working well with the note 3???

Same here - I also have my doubts that it's the app. Booting into stock recovery and wiping cache has worked to fix any unstable connection issues I've had.

Get Adaway - It simply updates your hostfile, its the best I ever used.

Just speaking for me the application is the trigger. I've put it on and the I get constant unstable messages. As soon as I remove the app the errors stop.
done it twice. Maybe I could have configured it wong. I went with the "simple" list option.

Any recommended app that doesn't require root? I haven't rooted my Note yet as I do not wish to wipe everything off of it :\. I'm hoping that a root method comes out that doesn't require wiping it soon.
AdAway user here as well. No issues.
I just switched over to AdAway as well since Adfree stopped working
JRummy's AdBlocker IMO happens to be the best, try it here if you haven't. http://d-h.st/4TF

Un-installing adblock plus got rid of the "internet unstable" messages for me also. Installed adaway and all seems well.
I got rid of it because it made YouTube 7 minutes to load a video because it was blocking the adds, and YouTube just keeps on timing out on the adds just keep trying to reload. Eventually YouTube gives up trying to load the ad and plays the vid.

Since the hosts file is located on the /system partition, normally read-only during use, root privileges are required to change it

What's nice about Adaway is that you can add whichever URL youtube uses for ads to your "whitelist" within the app.
Another example would be that I "blacklist" mtalk.google.com to reduce my google wakelocks/better battery life because i don't use Google Talk at all

So far so good with this switch
It doesn't happen to a lot of sites I visit, but it's happening enough to irk me. I know the sites aren't down bc I can access them on other devices. My Internet connection is fine bc I can still browse the Web. I haven't deleted any apps just froze some bloat. I even unfroze everything rebooted but still getting same error.
I'm rooted stock on MJ7. (used the SU survival work around) I can't change Apn settings bc it's not an option to add a new one. Thanks in advance for any help that's given.

There should be an option in there to store your hosts file.
Can anyone recommend a working adblocker for rooted phones? I am looking for one that also blocks ad's in games, my daughter has a habit of clicking them . I installed Adaway but it seems to error out when trying to apply the new hosts file.
Try Adfree. I don't think that any of them are perfect, but see how it works for you.
I prefer AdAway

I love adfree. The only thing it doesn't block are the video ads that come up between games in apps like hungry shark.

I found one thing I don't like on Adaway. It requires reboot for it to take effect every time after update. The ROM (by Beans) I installed for Note 2 before had the ad remover pre-installed and worked flawlessly.

It may depend on the app, but at least with the Chrome browser, I can just force close it and reopen it and the changes take effect. Hope this helps!
Thanks everyone, I will try the modified adaway and adfree =)
I use AdAway on f-droid.

Something else?

AdClear does, but you have to install the package from their website. It also blocks in App ads.

Does a good job blocking adds for me.
I use moaab (mother of all ad blockers). I'm not sure about over Wi-Fi since I don't use Wi-Fi often, but I think it might work on it.

MoaaB works on both... It uses the hosts file which is system wide and even in apps that call home...
If you want white space removed... Blokada does this... But... AdGuard does it better...

It depends on what you want. If you want to block ads on websites, install Firefox Mobile, and then install the uBlock Origin extension. It will block most ads on web pages, no matter if you are on wifi or cellular.
