[Q] ExFAT is read-only on GS4 (i9505) - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've got a 32 GB SD card which I've formatted to exFAT through Windows. The card works as expected when inserted in my PC; I can add, remove and change files. Though, I can not delete files I copied to it from my Windows PC when it's in my GS4, using stock Android 4.3. I can read files and strangely apps can read/write/delete files they create themselves. The problem is, if I delete a file in for instance ES File Explorer or any media player, the UI pretends to delete it (no errors given), but when I refresh the view, the file is still there.
I'm a bit stuck as it's a bit annoying having to move the card to my PC to delete files created on my PC.
Is there a low level difference in how Windows and Android devices handle exFAT? I can't format the card to exFAT from within the phone, it will only default to FAT32. I tried to download the "Official SD card formatter" from sdcard.org, but that one also defaults to FAT32 on 32GB SD cards.
Has anyone else had this problem? Not being able to delete files on an exFAT SD card? If so, how did you get around it without rooting the phone?

SD Card problem?

Probably this topic should be in a different place, but In some way is connected to my BA.(Im using xplode's WM6). Ok back to problem. So I have 4gb SD card and I can only copy files on it after format. If I want to add sth on a card files became damaged.(I have only one chance to write files if i want to add sth I need to copy all files back on my pc then foramt card and then copy files back on Card). Problem is connected to my BA because when i copy files on a device and from device on my card(by resco explorer) files are ok(i dont need to format card). So where is the problem??
I wish you understand what I'm talking about
Are you sure you have 4GB SD card and not SDHC? SDHC cards are not supported on BA.
I'm sure. Its weird cause when i copy file from phone memory to storage card files are ok. But whem I'm copying directly from PC to card throug card reader(or wm5torage) files are damaged, unless I make a format but format halps only for one time.
May I know the file system of your SD card?
file system of windows NTFS. System of card FAT32
i had this prob. on my previous card its due to the file format. Beyond 2 gb fat do not works so it goes to fat32 and but these non sdhc card keeps running on fat so this happens. in ideal form the 4gb sd should be 4gb sdhc to work properly.
this causes me to switch to 2 2gb sd card instead of 1 4gb. I also advice u to take backup regularly because u never know when they stop working properly.
so if its file system problem why my 1gb card i working(fat32 as well as 4gb). That could mean that 4gb card is damaged sp why its workin after format and why I can copy from phone without mistakes? Is there any way to change file system on a card? By windows formating i can only format fat32

[Q] Problem writing to SD card

Has anyone else experienced problems writing files to external SD card just lately? All I know is that the SD card works fine If I use it on the computer with a card reader.
For instance if I copy 300mb of titaniumbackup files it will randomly stop in the process and tell me there is a problem writing the files. This also happens with other files. I can't seem to find anything in the logs either, but then I'm not exactly sure what to look for.
I've tried ES file explorer, the CM11 file explorer and FX file exporer. I've reformatted the SD card using CWM, put it in my card reader on my computer and was able to copy over 40gb of data flawlessly so the card doesn't seem to be corrupt.
I'm not really sure where to start with the troubleshooting, as I said before I'm not sure what I'm looking for in the log files regarding failed file transfers.

If the sdcard is not already formatted with fat32 your best bet is to format it
fat32 and there is an excellent chance that you will be able to use it in your
phone and computer without any further issues.
Here is a direct download link for the windows fat32 formatter:

Good luck!

I switched to slimkat rom to try it out. It's also based on 4.4 and the same kernel as what I had before. I re-formatted the sd card to fat32 at the same time but everything seems to work now. I wonder what it was. Maybe just a kitkat bug with exfat that still needs to be sorted out

How to format SD card in fat32 or ntfs format?

hello everyone, i am using samsung sm-g900h with marshmallow in it and i have rooted my phone with twrp recovery. The phone is working very fine but i dont know from last 2 weeks i am not able to copy , paste , rename , move or delete any file from my external memory card using Es file explorer . i googled about that and did cmd things and disk management things too to format sd card using laptop but it always show RAW as format not NTFS or FAT32. I then deleted ( unallocated) the SD card and inserted it back on phone and formatted it from there and its showing everything fine... but while copying files from laptop it stops at random file for so many minutes and when i open the folder i see some coding languages files and folders in it like some virus or so...
Is there any solution of it or i have to buy new sdcard ?
Try putting the card into a USB reader in your PC, and use a program called "MiniTool Partition Wizard Free", delete all the partitions on the MicroSD card, create a new Primary partition, then format to FAT32, see if that fixes it for your phone

No format on SD card after marshmallow upgrade

Hi, I'm trying to find how to solve this problem with no success.
I got Bliss Rom with marshmallow and i formatted my sd card as an extension of internal memory. Something that marshmallow allows.
I got back to stock system and recovery in order to upgrade officially from stock but, the system doesn't recognize the format of my sd card, suggesting to give it a format.
After that, system keeps on not recognize my sd card and I'm stuck.
Do I have to format it taking it out and accessing via a cardreader to manage file system or there's a way to solve this?
Thank you in advance...

No success. There are 2 partitions that cannot be modified. I'm stuck...:crying:
I just [RESOLVED] an issue after inserting a brand new SanDisk 128GB microSDXC sd card.
The Honor 5X will format the blasted thing to exFAT which refuses to open up in my Windows 8.1 Laptop to access folders and the like. A try to format to FAT32 did not have that available either. (Windows only showed NTFS/(default) exFAT)
So what i did was grab this SanDisk formatter
Code:
http://www.verbatim.com/includes/binary_details.php3?show=1&id=840
and in an instant my formerly exFAT transformed to the more easily PC accessible FAT32!
Now it shows up perfectly whenever plugged into any PC via USB and you can feel free to reach your SD Card contents manually to your hearts content.
No need for Huawei's (in my opinion buggy) HiSuite which i find sorely lacking and too much wasted time with Import/Export stuff.
Hope this helps someone, anyone who thinks that they absolutely must use Honor's/Marshmallow's own formatting to exFAT.

Apps 2 SD problem

I'm on Lollipop 5.1 with kernel by @Shaky156 and i'm having issues with Link2SD/Apps2SD with linking external files of games to external SD card.
- using the ext4 format for the SD card, the tablet restarts all of a sudden while linking files
- using the ext3 format, the tablet does not restart but the app with linked files does not recognize any file
Anyone who uses the said apps to transfer files to SD? I think this is a device specific problem as i could use the same app with my other android devices.
thanks!
