There is a hide apps from the app drawer module for Xposed Framework but it only works for GEL. Anyone know of one that will work for us. I'm using Baja Rom and would love this option back. Thanks

I'm rooted and using nova launcher, but try this app. It's awesome.

Disable the app through app settings

As others have said you need a third party launcher.
But you don't need root to hide icons.
To the other posters in the thread. There are times when you don't want to disable the app, you just want to hide the icon(s). Some basic examples. A part of maps like the local icon. The messenger icon for google+. Speaking of Google, the Google search icon. And I'm sure there are many other third party apps that have a extra icon. Remember the Facebook camera icon that only lasted about a week because of the uproar...

You can use Nova Launcher.

I recommend the Xposed Framework + the Nottach Xposed module. It offers the options you're looking for plus lots more.

Is there any app / way to achieve this? There are two many apps that I do not launch on a regular basis which I do not want to appear in the App Menu but keep the app available to launch when required using Swapp or any other Gesture App Launcher like GMD. My Nexus 4 is rooted. I have tried few apps to hide but I am unable to launch them while hidden.

Many third-party launchers have the ability to hide apps (nova, apex, action) from the app drawer. If you wish to run one of these hidden apps, simply search for it-either in the launcher's search or with Google now.

Sorry, forgot to mention.. If possible I would like to avoid third party launchers. I am happy with the stock launcher.

Stock launcher doesn't have this option. If you want to hide icons, you have to get a third party one. Sorry.

I really like the stock Messaging app and its integration with the rest of the phone. However, I would like to be able to turn on "read receipts" without receiving a notification every time a message is delivered. Is this possible?

If you root and install the xposed framework there's a few modules that can do this.

I've done that already. Interesting.. I'm new to this xposed framework thing. I'll have to take a look at the modules. Would you happen to know which ones?
Well I don't use the stock messaging app to test it out but this one should work

I love this phone, but the stock ROM seems to be missing the bits needed for the various App Ops programs to work. I've been running AOSP/AOKP/AICP ROMs for so long now, I totally forgot that the permissions code had been removed.
Is there any way to add the code back, so these apps will work again?
Install xposed and use xprivacy?

I've never used xprivacy, though I've seen many swear by it. I'll install xposed tonight and check it out. Can't wait for a good aftermarket ROM. Haven't seen one yet.... bit I haven't been looking too hard, either.

Thanks for all the replies/advice. I finally got around to installing the xposed framework, as well as a bunch of modules (forgot how great it was). I installed AppOps for xposed, as well as Xprivacy. Xprivacy takes forever to setup, but has a lot more granularity.
