I have been having issues with the wifi tether that are confusing me a bit. A little back ground:
After installing KK (stock) via zip, I had no issues with Tether. A few weeks after the upgrade, I tried the LTE fix for the 1st time, and there was much happiness.. everything seemed good (I'm on T-Mobile btw, it worked awesome). Sometime after the 4.4.2 OTA installed, I tried to use the tether, and it seemed normal, but nothing I connected to it could actually access a webpage. On my PC, I could connect to the hotspot and Ping a website, but it would not load it (used www.cnn.com to test, easy to type). I even tried using the IP address generated by the ping test, but no luck. It is obviously able to resolve an address in DNS.
I decided to start playing with some ROMS, and found a couple I liked, but still ran into the issue with tethering, but now was happening without 4G too... until I tried a PA ROM. this ROM has the tether working even with the 4G enabled, so I know it's not a hardware issue with my phone, bg relief. The issue I have is there was one ROM I was really hoping to stick with, a CM11 Nexus 5 Experience ROM. BUt ebven tho I keep trying after updates, it still wont work I have tried all 4 versions they have this past weekend and can get data to other devices even on the non-4G ROMS. There has to be something I'm missing here.
Anyone else run into this and found whats causing it?
There are numerous threads and articles all over the internet that explain what this and how to fix it, post 4.2.2. Before you dive in, check to make sure you aren't using T-Mobile's IPv6 APN, as it does not support tethering (at least right now).
I suggest you go read up in the general section, as I'm pretty sure the thread is there. The fix involves editing a sqlite database to allow tethering.
Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. Everything seems good now with the ROM I was trying, and I think I can get others to work as well. Much appreciated!

The above link give an explanation of wifi problems that at least some people are having... three have mentioned identical or similar problems in the Google Help forum. The issue is that wifi worked initially, but now it isn't working on my phone. In my case I'm unable to get any results when I do a scan of available networks, and I've tried to manually assign an IP and connect that way without any success either. In other cases listed in the above link, people are able to still see networks after performing a scan but never connect to those networks. All this is after being able to connect at least once before.
Anyone have a similar issue with wifi? Also, does anyone have any idea on what to do about this issue?
i am having the same problem with my wifi. any chance rooting had to do with this problem?
I have a different kind of wifi problem. It seems to work fine everywhere except work, where we use Cisco wifi access points.
It is only is a problem with Android devices, mytouch 3g, g1, and now the nexus one.
My Touch Pro 2 connects fine.
Looks like the android devices get connected, and even get an IP, but can't browse the web or ping any network devices.
Really strange.

This is my suspicion. I think in the rooting (or the custom rom?) thread someone said rooting screwed the wi-fi, and he had to do it again and then it's fixed
I haven't rooted my phone yet, and I still have this problem. I have installed a ton of apps though... although I don't know how that could be the problem. Is there an easy way to wipe the phone and revert back to how it was when I received it? This is the step I'm willing try before rooting or modifying it in some other potentially warranty-voiding way... I may be needing to return this if I can't get wifi working.
There is a 'Factory reset' in the settings
After trying everything I can think of aside from warranty-breaking things, I called the HTC support and we went through very basic things together then he agreed that they will need to take a look at the phone. They will ship me a packing slip and I'll return it in the same box it came in. The repair station is an hour's flight away (in Houston) so I hope to have my phone back very soon, but I wasn't given an estimate so I can't be when that will happen.

The above link is to a thread on the Google Help forums where I've been keeping track of this issue. Basically the wifi issue is a know issue according to an HTC representative I just talked with, and they will be sending a OTA firmware update out to all NexusOne phones within the next several days that should resolve any issues we are having with this functionality. This saves me from needing to send in my phone for repairs, and if it comes to that they said they will just swap the phones without me being out of a phone at all.
I've been using various versions of wireless tether since my Moment days. I'm currently using pre11 on my Epic right now, but I see it's up to pre15 right now on http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list. It's working completely fine for me now, and I'm honestly surprised on how quick the connection is. What is the difference between these different versions anyways?
Mostly added support for other phones,,,and I think pre13 introduced the lock button when tethered, but I dont even se a need for it.

I just got the RC released a few days ago.
Without making a new thread about it, I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong...
I have never been able to get a computer to connect to the network created by Wireless Tether. Can anyone help?
Pre14 wouldn't work for me. Pre15 works fine.

Need a little more detail than that. The network created is AdHoc, have you been able to connect these machinces to other ad hocs?
Not specifically, and I'm aware of the Ad-Hoc...
but one is a literally fresh formatted Win7 and the other is a ChromeOS laptop.
I would think either should be fine.
No luck.
Curious, chrome os cr48?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Yes, and I even know the freshly-formatted Win7 computer has been on an ad-hoc phone-tether network before.
So I'm not sure why, but the same night I asked this question, I also started getting issues. It seemed to be running perfectly fine, but then when I noticed someone else logging onto my connection (I hadn't encrypted it), I grabbed the both and both gave Access Control to my phone only and then encrypted it. Even since then, even when turning off AC and encrpytion, I can only go an hour or so and then the signal drops. I'm not sure if it's even related to me turning on AC/encryption or what since I don't even remember how long I was running it before someone tried hopping onto my signal. At this point, since 11 has worked, I'm not sure if I should just delete and reinstall it in an effort to erase any of the changes and made and see if that makes it work better, or just go ahead and upgrade to 15.
As for using it, once connected to a 4G connection (1 of 3 lines), I'm actually quite surprised how quickly it works. Sure, I'm not going to be streaming from HULU, but even going to picture intensive threads loaded fairly quickly. Our phones are so badass...I make sure to always remind everyone around me
I couldn't get WirelessTether to work with my CR-48 either. It did work with my wife's Evo however. Frustrating.
Ok before I begin with this thread I'd like to say although I'm a new user, I have been on XDA for quite some time. My old account information has been lost.
Basically, my WiFi on my SGS4 I9505 is working when I'm at home, but I can't connect to the one at work. It used to work flawlessly, connected without me clicking the buttons, but now it says "Connecting" then straight back to "Saved"
What have I tried?
- New roms, different Android releases
- Searching forums
- Completely re-flashing the stock firmware via Odin
- Multiple modems via Odin
No matter what I do, I can connect at my home modem but not my work one, all of my work colleges are connected, I've had my friend try connect it (he was the man who introduced me to flashing ect) and he hasn't a clue.
Any advice would be appreciated & the reason I'm creating an entirely new thread is due to the fact my WiFi works at home so it's not just a bug there. Thanks.

Same exact thing happening to my S4 SPH-L720 (Sprint). Using NegaliteROM 4.4
Tried:
-Re-flashing ROM
-Updating PRL & Profile
-"Forget Network" and re-typed password (confirmed with IT dept password hasn't changed)
- Cleared google account ("Backup and reset" portion) then re-synced after failed login.
And as irscotty stated, wifi works EVERYWHERE else and it just goes straight to "Saved Secured"
Is there a way to reflash the Wifi card to an older Firmware? I don't recall updating it manually, and I believe that is the only way to update it (correct me if i'm wrong). If so, is this even advisable....
Thanks
The only other thing I can think is perhaps the contract provider has cut down the WiFi limitations?
Not sure if that's even possible but every other modem I connect to is just a few feet away, the one at work is perhaps 5-8 metres. But was working 100% prior to this, and the signal strength is saying "Strong" just wont connect

Yeah I'm literally 1 yard away from the router. What do you mean by cutting down on limitations? Blocking the amount of mac id's from the router homepage ?
No it has been known in the past for your data providers to cut down your WiFi range to force you into using their data, as opposed to WiFi.
Although to my knowledge, this can only be done through an OTA update on the original software (not custom)
My current solution to this is by changing my Mac address and have successfully logged back in. Seems like was I indeed being blocked. But have no confirmation yet. I use a program called MacChanger (requires root) and hard change my ID when I'm at work. Has been working for a few days now.
Good luck

Going to try this when I'm at work next, will let you know. Thanks
So I root my H990DS it was hard but in the end everything is working fine but one problem. My Wifi speeds are super slow. About 3mbs and it should be about 40 or even 50. I tested the speed on my computer and it's fine also when I use my carrier data internet it's much faster.
I wonder if it's possible to be related to the kernel I installed using the dirty santa root method I also installed ADFree that changes my host file. I unsintalled it and recovered my original Host file.
The post is lacking info I guess but I'm not sure what useful information I can give, please if you need more info do help me just ask.
Thanks for reading

I have a similar problem, but it's my wifi keeps dropping randomly. Usually when downloading something. I'm using a rooted H910.
Nevermind I think I fixed it I did multiple things so I'm not sure which one worked.
I cleared my app caches then went to TWRP and cleared my chaches there as well. I went and ''forgot'' my connection then I turned my phone off and removed my battery meanwhile I turned my internet off and waited some time. I turned my internet on and then my phone. When I connected I had good speeds again.
Now I'm very happy after 2 days fighting to make my rooted phone work, using strange line of commands in terminals updating kdz changing kernels I finally managed to make my phone work properly. I will wait some days and see how the phone reacts on the long run. I will leave the topic here in case someone else in the LG V20 is having issues with WiFi as well.
I'm just not sure what caused my problem maybe AdFree but since I don't see anyone having issues with it in the forums I just can't point to anyone, I'm just glad I have normal speeds again

Does I changes to your mobile data?
Maybe it's auto switching to the mobile network? Did you try to disable this option? https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-207772/

My service is disabled so it can't use data.
ive seen a few people post on here with this problem but none of the posted solutions are working for me. Im on oreo b12, on verizon. i have tried rooted and unrooted. I have 4g lte data connected no problem, but when the hotspot goes up it is not transmitting data. I do pay for the hotspot which makes this aggravating. i did some searching on here and the xda forums, and i read about changing the APN settings, which i have to no avail in helping this. I read about the "settings put global tether_dun_required 0" and tried that only to get an error "failure calling service settings" (i may be a little off im running from memory right now). when googling that error i read about changing the selinux to permissive, thats where i was over my head and was denied, but i stopped there. does anyone here have an idea of another way for me to try to tackle this? was i doing something wrong? I was rooted when i tried all of this, i reinstalled and went unrooted to see if that would help but it did not. Any help or a guiding light would be appreciated and i know this question has come up a few times before its just not working for me.
I'm still on stock, non rooted Nougat and encrypted and have 2 SIMs, was hotspotting my personal SIM no problem but couldn't hotspot my work SIM which was a real PIA. I ensured the APN was good but that didn't help. After some googling for solutions I used my PC and ADB to alter a setting for it.
Now I can hotspot it perfectly. Can't remember what it was but it was a basic command. At the time I also removed a bunch of system apps I didn't use, mostly Google bloat. Made the phone snappier again too.

Keep your pants on, I never saw the reply here
If I get some googling time I'll have a look, but you guys could do the same...
Do it for all of us Google it for us before you post a incomplete reply. If you are unaware of how to create a link to save others to complete your reply maybe try posting that .
It's like saying I know where the true superior being resides in religious texts "Google It" as educated beings know there isn't one but that doesn't stop people googling it and leading them into a pointless search on truth based on someone's made up fairytale.
My pants are on the way they should be on unlike yours because I use a belt as where you has their bare arse hanging out for others to see.

Ball is in your court
You want me to help you whilst insulting me, strange way to go about it
Have a read of this and you get the idea of what needs doing. You have to be comfortable using ADB.
https://diggle.tech/news/2016/03/enable-tethering-android-5-1-beyond-marshmallow/
Another setting to try is:
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
I can't check it myself as after Oreo update my phone works with hotspot off either SIM anyway.
