I've been using various versions of wireless tether since my Moment days. I'm currently using pre11 on my Epic right now, but I see it's up to pre15 right now on http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list. It's working completely fine for me now, and I'm honestly surprised on how quick the connection is. What is the difference between these different versions anyways?
Mostly added support for other phones,,,and I think pre13 introduced the lock button when tethered, but I dont even se a need for it.

I just got the RC released a few days ago.
Without making a new thread about it, I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong...
I have never been able to get a computer to connect to the network created by Wireless Tether. Can anyone help?
Pre14 wouldn't work for me. Pre15 works fine.

Need a little more detail than that. The network created is AdHoc, have you been able to connect these machinces to other ad hocs?
Not specifically, and I'm aware of the Ad-Hoc...
but one is a literally fresh formatted Win7 and the other is a ChromeOS laptop.
I would think either should be fine.
No luck.
Curious, chrome os cr48?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Yes, and I even know the freshly-formatted Win7 computer has been on an ad-hoc phone-tether network before.
So I'm not sure why, but the same night I asked this question, I also started getting issues. It seemed to be running perfectly fine, but then when I noticed someone else logging onto my connection (I hadn't encrypted it), I grabbed the both and both gave Access Control to my phone only and then encrypted it. Even since then, even when turning off AC and encrpytion, I can only go an hour or so and then the signal drops. I'm not sure if it's even related to me turning on AC/encryption or what since I don't even remember how long I was running it before someone tried hopping onto my signal. At this point, since 11 has worked, I'm not sure if I should just delete and reinstall it in an effort to erase any of the changes and made and see if that makes it work better, or just go ahead and upgrade to 15.
As for using it, once connected to a 4G connection (1 of 3 lines), I'm actually quite surprised how quickly it works. Sure, I'm not going to be streaming from HULU, but even going to picture intensive threads loaded fairly quickly. Our phones are so badass...I make sure to always remind everyone around me
I couldn't get WirelessTether to work with my CR-48 either. It did work with my wife's Evo however. Frustrating.

Hey guys I rarely, if ever, post anything, but I made a discovery yesterday that I just tested and wanted to let everyone in on it. I have the **Leaked** but now **Official** "RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.27.651.5_R_signed_release" installed on my phone. My phone had not been rooted and I decided to upgraded from 1.5 to 2.1 yesterday (just couldn't get myself to pull the trigger sooner). While I molesting the new features I went to mount the phone as a disk drive and noticed there were some additional options. Once you plug in the USB into the phone, access the pull-down menu from the status bar and press "Charge Only". You will be greeted with another menu that, among other things, has an option for "Internet Sharing" select this and the phone will install some software on your computer. After that your computer will be able to utilize your phone as a modem. Now I haven't tried this over just a 3G connection as I live out in the country and my service is terrrrrible out here, but what I was able to confirm is that this works over WiFi with no problems. I turned off the Wifi card on my laptop and enabled the Wifi on the phone. A few moments later I got the connection indicator on my laptop (Windows Vista) and away we go. I posted this using the connection. Can anyone confirm this works over 3G?

did you update with the RUU?
FYI, this is not "wifi" tethering, it's "wired" tethering.
good to know internet sharing was in the final!
If I understand your question correctly, yeah I updated with the RUU but I wasn't really interested in rooting the phone.
Yes it works, but you need to change your PRI

In other words, no it does not work if you ran the RUU. You would have to be rooted, flash an Eris based ROM, and then update using the SprintUpdate2.zip Damageless posted.

Aside from "Flashing an Eris ROM breaks your PRI" he wouldn't find much. Sometimes you just gotta let it slide and lend a hand.
Are you guys talking about the same thing he is? He said he ran the RUU and is not rooted. He said he doesn't get good 3g where he lives but what he did was turn off wifi on his laptop and enable it on the phone. He enabled internet sharing and it shared his internet connection with the laptop.
This isn't wifi tethering like we usually describe it, but he is describing a different situation than the one you guys are talking about. Unless I missed something in the posts.

You're both right and wrong.
I was assuming that he rooted his phone before updating to 2.1, thought he just made a mistake by adding the ruu part.
And he was asking about 3g tethering since he could do it over wifi.
To answer his question: You cannot tether that way if you ran the official RUU...that is until an exploit is found and you root your phone.
PDAnet will still work for you though
He probably has one of the few Sprint PRI's that allows MNS....bastage.....
Thanks guys, I'll take my laptop to work tomorrow and give it a try with and without PDANet. Thanks for all of the feedback.
What is you PRI number?
Pri version: 2.20_003
I have the same PRI number. How did you get the network sharing to work? Did you download any software?
yeah we need to find out if this new PRI will allow wired tethering, but I don't want to lose root
we need a few people (read: guinea pigs) to test it out
Ok, I got the network sharing via wired tether to work with WIFI. Now if I can get it to work on 3g.
Edit:
I tried to use the 3g network and it will not allow you to wire tether. It will keep popping up error 67 which "Data Call Failure". Boo.
I'm currently trying to figure out where exactly the PRI is stored in a ROM, so I can make update.zip's of different PRI's, to allow tethering.

The hero has always been able to share wifi using the usb tether. The 3G sharing will be disabled for you as always. Sorry to burst your bubble this is not something new. In fact, way back before we had root you could use a trick to tether the 3G over usb by turning off mobile network and then enabling the MNS while turning the mobile network back on. It was just a bug that someone found to bypass the 3G sharing lockout. After we got root no one really needed that trick anymore.
Yea I just got the Tmo Vibrant the other day and I can't get the usb tethering to work. I tried with the pda.net app that came with the phone and had no luck at all. This is a stock phone, it hasn't been rooted or anything. Can someone please tell me what I have to do to get this to work, or point me in the right direction. I been searching for the past 2 days and came up with nothing. I know about wifi hotspot but that looses connection on me after 5min. Im looking for straight usb tethering. Appreciate it.

you're in the USA on T-mobile, when you say wi fi tethering but you aren't rooted, what program are you using? Rooting should solve this problem, it is very quick and the instructions are in the sticky thread in this forum.
then install Rom Manager (in same thread as rooting)
then follow instructions here for the Mobile AP software that samsung wrote for the galaxy S.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=760243
as far as I know, this is the most versatile wi-fi tethering program since it doesn't create an ad-hoc network, it is true access point. be sure to use clockwork recovery (available in the rom manager app from the market) to install it since it is a .zip not .apk
I was using the wifi hotsoot on my hd2. That phone is gone now though. It would only hold a connection for a couple of secs though. Im not too sure I want to root my phone though. What I really want to know is, does your phone have to be rooted to be able to access usb tethering.
PDA.net does work fine on your non-rooted phone. Allow the computer side of the installation install the drivers and it will install the phone side too. I used it on my Samsung Moment before I got my Vibrant also. But the rooted path is a much better solution if you want to give it a try. Always plenty of people willing to help here if you have any questions.
Thank you guys for your suggestions. I appreciate it
Do you guys use pda.net or another program. Because correct me if I'm wrong don't you have to pay for pda.net?
I use PDAnet and it is free, but for it to work, you have to install the software on the computer as well and the drivers for the phone. I love PDAnet because when you are browsing the internet on the computer and you get a text, the message will pop up on the screen of the PC and you can reply from there, no need to pick up the phone...
I use easytether. It does the job but I'm not sure if you have to be rooted. I don't think you do.

A friend uses PDANET on his MyTouch Slide since he doesn't want to root.
I do recommend the rooted method though.
I wirelessly tethered today (home internet went down) for ~1 hour on 3G and it was almost as fast as our internet normally is. Nothing special to install on the computer & it's always ready for you just in case you need it.
You can always unroot later if you don't like it, pretty simple.
All you need is either Behold II USB driver or having Samsung Kies installed and it's 100% free, or just change USB mode to Kies and plug it to Cradlepoint CTR-500 router and you're hooked.
I rooted and used mobile AP (see post 2). This has been, for me, the easiest and most reliable solution.
I'm in the "I've rooted and am using the WiFi mobile Hotspot" application crowd. Honestly, the ability to have the phone become a mobile AP was 80% of the reason I rooted the phone.
My phone seems to continue to receive emails and txts while acting as an AP and while I' haven't tested it I wouldn't be surprised if it still received calls...
worth rooting for imho...

Calls work as well.
I will drop T-Mobile for the first carrier that has a non-locked down Android 2.2 phone with comparable specs to the Vibrant that doesn't remove the tethering app and/or charges an arm and a leg for tethering.
I think I'm going to start looking around.
Also, are these phones starting to sell more than they were before? I'm still waiting for a replacement on backorder and it still hasn't even shipped to me yet. It's been a week. Last one shipped the next day (off backorder).
If I have to use this HD2 for another week, I'm killing 8 kittens.

is there a way to tether without rooting? i read the thread and i am getting mixed responses. everyone says rooting is better but is it possible without a root?
bump, any information i search on google seems outdated
Xda search is like ten times worse.
Kies for usb tether is an easy solution free and doesn't require root access - just look for the various ways to download kies and look for the USB drivers that should be searchable.
I've been using android-wifi-tether (requires root) for wifi tether and it does a good job - might have to check out mobileAP since most seem to have good success with it.
Appreciate it
Hey everyone,
im new to the android OS. i rooted the phone and today i decided to mess with the sprint hot spot feature. i wasnt prompt any error codes or have any fee agreement pop up. i simply click activate and bamm, wifi. so the question is, would i be charge the $30 since nothing was prompt or is it a sneaky thing sprint do and bill me later? or maybe it was a feature one click root did. thanks for the answer. i tried to search but couldnt find a solid answer.
I'd be careful with that! Might be getting that $30 fee added on as a surprise. If you are rooted, you don't need hotspot, just download Wifi tether from the market. it's free for sure. no surprises!
I also second that, I would stay away from the Orig Sprint Hotspot feature if you are not paying for it. Dont be surprise if you see a $30 charge on the bill, like stated above from jirafabo just root like you did already and use the wifi tether program if you really need some sort of wifi tethering. It operates on the "N" 802.11 network so as long as your laptop can see a "N" network you can connect.
alrighty. by any chance anyone figure out how to make the phone tether over usb by using the option already available once plugged in? i dont have wireless N and just want a one click system.
I don't think wifi tether uses N. It should work with the usual a//b/g channels

you can try wifi tether and see if you dont broadcast on the "n" network, but when I go over the wifi icon on the laptop the epic is running radio 802.11n adhoc network.

Did you try using it as a hotspot? Mine starts up without any prompts and I can see if from the computer but I can't get on the internet. I noticed that as soon as I activate the hotspot it kills the 3g signal. I assumed this was Sprints way of protecting it. I didn't think it was a problem on my end.
I have been using mine rooted for a while with the wireless tether app 2.0.9pre5 (i think). I think this is just because of the signal quality i'm getting, but my 3G speeds are only around .5mbps down and .3mbps up (if i'm lucky, lol). Anyone else getting anything faster? I have only been on sprint for a couple months now and prior to that, i had AT&T, which seemed a bit faster. I realize there are differences between the networks, but i would have figured EVDO to be nearly the same speed.

Okay, just installed this on the MixUp kernel, and it works like a charm.
Wifi Tether is a nice app, but the solution above is hands-down superior and the way to go. Very simple, works in infrastructure mode so it will act as an AP for anything, and is nicely integrated in with the rest of the software through the settings panel.
This is DA BOMB!
One question from a noob, though: I applied this MOD through clockworkrecovery, the same way I flashed the MixUp kernel. This didn't replace the kernel or anything, right? I'm not running a different kernel now, am I?

No it didn't...recovery flashing = just replacing the files in the zip to the ones in your system...in this case it replaced only the MobileAP.apk and a few other files..and thats it. The kernel should be fine.
Hi, I just got a brand new Xperia Play and am loving it so far, aside from one infuriating issue.
When I'm on WIFI I simply cannot download anything from the market, I've been messing with this for the past 2 hours, things I've tried:
Clearing app cache of several apps related to downloading
Toggling WIFI / 3G
Restarting phone
Updating to latest firmware
Reset to factory settings
Play with router wireless settings
Reinstall router firmware
The only thing that did something is clearing the cache of the download manager, after I did that I was able to install one thing from the market. But it only worked once, it's not working anymore.
I'm also unable to play youtube video's when using wifi.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening? My phone is brand new, so it can't be something I did with it.
Also, up till today I had an HTC Magic, which did not have the problem on the same wireless network. It did have occasional "download starting" hiccups, but nothing like this.
Any advice?
Thanks!
Edit: Solution: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17359553&postcount=4
Edit2: False alarm, still not working.. seems to come and go
You have the weirdest problem.. Did you check your router to see if it's generating enough ip addresses for all your wireless devices?
What is the distance between you and your router and what kind of router is it? I believe the play has a weaker wifi radio, so it might be dcing too often to stream and download.. Try standing closer to the router to see if there is a difference first.
Sent from my XPlay using XDA App.
I'm right next to the router and the web interface shows a full signal, so it can't be that. I can also see in the web interface that an ip address was assigned.
I've tried setting the phone as the DMZ and disabling the router firewall. No luck with that either.
I also tried upgrading my router firmware from Tomato to DD-WRT and doing a factory reset, but again .. no luck.
I'm running out of ideas, it seems the problem originates from Android and not my router, but I can't think of anything else I could try. Could it be an issue with the Android network in my location?
Omfg.. 3/4 hours later I finally got it, and this one wasn't suggested anywhere else so hopefully this will help some others in the future.
I had to go into wireless settings on my phone, click menu, go to advanced and then manually configure the network connection. Make sure your router has reserved an ip for you and use that one, otherwise you might end up trying to use one that is already in use.
After that it all seems to be working for me (so far). Fingers crossed that it won't stop working again.
Yea you couldn't find the answer anywhere else because it seemed like it was an isolated incident. Gratz for figuring it out though.
Sent from my XPlay using XDA App.
Next day, working fine in the morning. Couple hours later and it's back to getting stuck on "Downloading". Tried toggling static ip with no luck.
God this is incredibly annoying. I'm guessing it'll magically start working again at some point, and then stop working again later.
From what I've found through google this bug has been around since the very first version and not a single solution has been offered by google. Seriously this is ridiculous
Hi,
I'm having exactly the same issues.... Normal browsing, etc works fine on WIFI but market just wont work on WIFI.
I dont even see the device hitting my router when I try to download thru the market. Other network connections are seen by my router.
I wonder if it might be linked to the the fact that I'm running a UK rom on my device. When I'm using my data connection off Rogers, it actually does a RMNET to the British government... So we are seen as downloading from the UK.. Just an idea...
It's annoying as hell....
I was going to say download speedtest.net app when you can and see what it yields... but I see you've got it figured out. Nice!

Interesting, so you're saying that google somehow classifies us as UK users, which causes problems when switching to WIFI, which is not classified as a UK connection?
It would make sense, seeing as it seems to start working again after a while.. which could mean that whatever info google is caching on us is expired and it finally adopts the WIFI connection info.
Still, I have doubts about that.. I mean wouldn't a LOT more Rogers users be complaining about this?
The only persons that would be complaining are people like us running UK roms but our WIFI is coming from a canadian provider. In my case Videotron.
So when i<m using 3g data, i'm seen as coming from the UK because of the RMNET connection and when using WIFI i'm seen as Canadian... with a uk rom.
I've read that the market DOES have regions... might not be 100% correct on that but it might be part of my issue.
Mine BTW, never works anymore even after clearing cache, FC the market, etc...
lol i got the opposite problem i have trouble downloading stuff from the market using 3g but works perfect using wifi
not really an issue since im not an app whore
Its not a issue on play all phones has that. Simply log in to your Talk app then try again. (launch Gtalk app and login)
Thanks, but i had already tried that.

This only works for some people.
My market has been working for a day now (I didn't do anything to fix it), I'm expecting it to stop working any moment. Fingers crossed.
Edit: Aaand there we go.. stopped working again. Sigh.
Got the same issue both on my Nexus S (Videotron) and (which is strange), on My Motorola Xoom Tablet which only has wifi, no 3g !!
Edit: If I connect my tablet thru my cell phone (wifi tethering) I have no problem with market
ok so me and mobidoy are both on Videotron...
Naatan I see you are in quebec... Videotron also?
Starting to believe it migh be an issue with them
hey
im in videotron too and since 4 days i cant watch youtube on youtube app and my download on market stay stuck in green bar!! i have a toshiba thrive android 3.1!!!!!
when i connect with a 3g router or on the wi fi in my city everything work again
so it clear that videotron is the problem!!!!
Had the same problems
First time hard reset fixed it.
Second time by magic, sorry. I was about to send the phone to repairs
I used the XDA App to post this, what did you use?
I've been having the exact same problem as you and can't seem to find a way to solve this. I just purchased a Galaxy Tab 10.1, WIFI only, and at home nothing will download from the Android market. It just gets stuck. Youtube videos also dont work via the app.I tried it out at a friends and everything worked flawlessly.
At home, I also have Videotron internet. I just called them, and tried to explain to their customer service but obviously they were quick to blame it on anything else they could. They said they did not block any ports either.
I read a thread about some vodafone users in the UK having a similar problem than us:
Edit: It wont let me post an external link because I'm a new user, but the post is on androidforums.com and is titled "ANDROID MARKET download/update problem via WiFi"
It seems their problem was fixed after calling Vodafone.
I'm also inclined to point fingers at Videotron since its odd we are all customers of theirs.
Just called Videotron technical support, they have an open ticket about it since yesterday morning and are actualy working on the issue !! There is hope !!
Whenever I am somewhere with a new network, my Tab is slow to recognize it. Sometimes the network will show up in the list of available networks for a brief moment, and then disappear before I can establish a connection. Other times I can connect by manually adding the SSID. Sent Sometimes turning the wifi off and then back on, or rebooting the Tab, works, but not always.
Most recently, I was in a place for almost an hour before it recognized the local network, even manually adding the SSID didn't help. The weird thing is, once it saw this network, it also saw several others in the neighborhood that previously were not shown on the list of available networks.
Once you I finally establish a connection, reconnecting to that network usually works without a problem.
Any thoughts?

Try a factory reset or if you are in any custom rom, try reflashing other rom.
Factoryreset willerase all your data so watch out.
Tried a factory reset... Didn't fix it. Here's the strangest thing: if I bring another network into the picture, all of a sudden it recognizes all the nearby networks. For example, right now I am in a place with 5 or 6 networks. Couldn't see any of them, until I fired up my cell phone's teather app, at which point it recognized not only the cell phone teather network but all of the others as well. It's almost as if it needs a new network to come along and wake it up. Other times though, it is my cell phone teather network that it won't see!

you need to mention if you have stock or non-stock, rooted or not, etc.
my best guess is that you are rooted and running a non-stock ROM. in this case, you should try another kernel. the wifi modules are the ones causing most of the problem, whatever the device. make sure you flash the proper wifi modules after the kernel!
otherwise... I would suggest to root. I heard all kind of crazy stories about our beloved Tab, so... don't fear trying different solutions until you get the one working for you.

Stock, not rooted. That's what makes this so frustrating - I haven't messed with anything, and it still doesn't work right! I'm running the most current Samsung android distribution for the Tab 10.1.
I've been avoiding rooting the Tab because one of the apps I use does a root check and won't run on a rooted device, but I think there is a workaround to that so rooting is definitely a possibility.
Rooting the device won't be sufficient in itself to solve this problem - I'd need to root and then install a different kernel, right? Or are there wifi modules I can install on top of the stock kernel (once I root the device)?
Any ideas on why this is happening and how I might fix it, short of rooting and installing a non-stock version of Android? My temporary fix is that I fire up FoxFi on my cell phone, and once the Tab sees the FoxFi network, it all of a sudden "sees" the other networks as well. But I've had several situations where I have my tablet but not my cell phone, and in those instances I can't get the Tab to recognize the new networks, even if I reboot the Tab or try messing around with the various networking settings. Note that a factory reset didn't fix this either.
Never mind - broke down and installed CM10.1.
I was having a similar issue on stock. I rooted and have since installed a few roms. I am a Much bigger fan of my tab now. I used infamous for a while and am now on the paranoid android 3.50 build which is awesome!
CM10.1 solved the shy network problem for me... And my tab is much more reliable now too.
