sprint hot spot is free? - Epic 4G General

Hey everyone,
im new to the android OS. i rooted the phone and today i decided to mess with the sprint hot spot feature. i wasnt prompt any error codes or have any fee agreement pop up. i simply click activate and bamm, wifi. so the question is, would i be charge the $30 since nothing was prompt or is it a sneaky thing sprint do and bill me later? or maybe it was a feature one click root did. thanks for the answer. i tried to search but couldnt find a solid answer.

I'd be careful with that! Might be getting that $30 fee added on as a surprise. If you are rooted, you don't need hotspot, just download Wifi tether from the market. it's free for sure. no surprises!

I also second that, I would stay away from the Orig Sprint Hotspot feature if you are not paying for it. Dont be surprise if you see a $30 charge on the bill, like stated above from jirafabo just root like you did already and use the wifi tether program if you really need some sort of wifi tethering. It operates on the "N" 802.11 network so as long as your laptop can see a "N" network you can connect.

alrighty. by any chance anyone figure out how to make the phone tether over usb by using the option already available once plugged in? i dont have wireless N and just want a one click system.

I don't think wifi tether uses N. It should work with the usual a//b/g channels
Sent from my Epic 4G

you can try wifi tether and see if you dont broadcast on the "n" network, but when I go over the wifi icon on the laptop the epic is running radio 802.11n adhoc network.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756804 <----now you can install this, it run on the 802.11g radio infrastrucrture mode. This is what I use since my companys laptop will not connect to wifi adhoc.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803335 <-----found this for you, it is a kernel what will allow usb tethering if you will like to try.

Did you try using it as a hotspot? Mine starts up without any prompts and I can see if from the computer but I can't get on the internet. I noticed that as soon as I activate the hotspot it kills the 3g signal. I assumed this was Sprints way of protecting it. I didn't think it was a problem on my end.

I have been using mine rooted for a while with the wireless tether app 2.0.9pre5 (i think). I think this is just because of the signal quality i'm getting, but my 3G speeds are only around .5mbps down and .3mbps up (if i'm lucky, lol). Anyone else getting anything faster? I have only been on sprint for a couple months now and prior to that, i had AT&T, which seemed a bit faster. I realize there are differences between the networks, but i would have figured EVDO to be nearly the same speed.

The built in USB tether doesn't work for me (I don't have the PAM/hot spot add on).
But I use Easy Tether for USB tethering. It works fine. Google it.
I'm on basic data plan and not rooted.

Okay, just installed this on the MixUp kernel, and it works like a charm.
Wifi Tether is a nice app, but the solution above is hands-down superior and the way to go. Very simple, works in infrastructure mode so it will act as an AP for anything, and is nicely integrated in with the rest of the software through the settings panel.
This is DA BOMB!
One question from a noob, though: I applied this MOD through clockworkrecovery, the same way I flashed the MixUp kernel. This didn't replace the kernel or anything, right? I'm not running a different kernel now, am I?

No it didn't...recovery flashing = just replacing the files in the zip to the ones in your system...in this case it replaced only the MobileAP.apk and a few other files..and thats it. The kernel should be fine.

Hero Wifi router???

I have a touch pro and going to upgrade to a hero or touch pro 2. i really like the hero however i am a heavy user of wm Wifi router on the touch pro so i can use the phone as a hot spot. i know the touch pro 2 can use this program, however is there a program like this for android? if so how good is it. WM wifi router is amazing, only thing bad is how bad it drains the battery but thats expected because of what its doing.
I think this is what you're looking for:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/wiki/FAQ
THANKS!!! thats exactly what i was looking for. even looks similar to WMwifi-router
anyone used it to see how well it works? if this works well im ditching the touch pro 2 and Windows mobile for the android and hero!!!
Works as expected, with decent battery consumption. If you look a few threads behind this one some people are having problems with the older release, install the latest build.
If you're on Sprint you'll have to wait till rooting is available for the CDMA hero.
Good luck
yeah im getting it for sprint....what do you mean by waiting for rooting on CDMA...those programs are only for the GSM version of the hero?
No, you need root access to change protected settings/files set by HTC. If you're a windows guy, think of it as administrator privileges.
Since the Sprint version has just been released, getting root access has not yet been discovered. We are all fairly certain that it will be, but it is a risky procedure that can brick your phone (I'm assuming that since you're here on xda you've already considered that).
Read the forums here for a bit and the answer will come
You could always try PdaNet for Android. It cost $29 after the trial is up, but doesn't require rooting. Not sure how well it works though since I haven't tried it.
I have never been able to get this working.
I have HTC Hero rooted (Android 1.5).
I have installed Wireless Thether 1.52.
I can run Wireless Tether noi prolbems.
Both my laptops can connect and get an IP address and Wireless Tehther shows them as connected.
However, I cannot connect to the internet. No routing appears to take place at all. I connot even ping the wireless interface of the hero from the laptop.
Anyone else had this or know the answer ?
USB tethering works beautifully but I would like to get this working too just because it's so cool
I'm Sprint guy as well, can't wait for this to be available.
sprint guy here too...looking for a way to simply tether the damn thing ...even with a cable would be nice??

Perfect. I used PdaNet on my Winmo phone and now that I have the Hero, this will be great.
I just checked. PDANet on android does not tether over wifi - only over USB which the Hero can do anyway.
Is there any option avaliable for phones which are not rooted?
Like TheBrit said, you can do this if you have the usb connected. Go under settings->wireless controls then check Mobile Network Sharing.
Ozym - exactly the same thing happens on my Hero. Gave up in the end.
To All -
Unless you would like to fork over the extra $15 a month to Sprint, simply going to settings->wireless controls then checking Mobile Network Sharing, does not work. At least it doesnt work for me any longer. I've been using HTC for the past year and a half (original Touch and then Touch Pro on unlimited data plan) neither had problems using Internet Sharing, but once I got the Hero and tried using the new Mobile Network Sharing all I get is "Failure to connect, Error code 65 and 67" I even called to ask why this feature isn't allowed any longer, the only response I got was that it must have been aglitch on my other phones, and that this feature costs extra. Damn I can not wait to finaly get ROOT access to this Sprint Hero. I miss my ability to jump on the internet anywhere I go.

It works fine on my Magic and Hero. Go in to settings of wifi tether by pressing menu and enable access control and also consider applyinng afterword by pressing menu again and apply. SECONDLY YOU MMAY MAKE IT SECURE BY GOING INTO MENU AND SETTINGS WHERE YOU CAN PUT YOUR OWN PASSPHRASE ETC.
i HOPE IT WORKS FOR YOU.
IMHO, the only "problem" with Wireless Tether is that it drains the battery very quickly. So quickly in fact that plugging it into the mains will not stop the battery from discharging!

Dave

all the winmobile phones can go on because they were all hacked into the cooked roms.... meaning it was opened up for you.... NORMALLY you cannot do this with ANY phone, so asking sprint or telling them that you had it back then was not such a good idea IMO.
and for the hero users now, of course they do not have it...we barely just got this phone. myself, i came from winmobile... i been with windows all my life and i loved it. but since the hero came out, i loved this phone and the android os.

Tethering built into 2.1 RUU for the Sprint Hero has

Hey guys I rarely, if ever, post anything, but I made a discovery yesterday that I just tested and wanted to let everyone in on it. I have the **Leaked** but now **Official** "RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.27.651.5_R_signed_release" installed on my phone. My phone had not been rooted and I decided to upgraded from 1.5 to 2.1 yesterday (just couldn't get myself to pull the trigger sooner). While I molesting the new features I went to mount the phone as a disk drive and noticed there were some additional options. Once you plug in the USB into the phone, access the pull-down menu from the status bar and press "Charge Only". You will be greeted with another menu that, among other things, has an option for "Internet Sharing" select this and the phone will install some software on your computer. After that your computer will be able to utilize your phone as a modem. Now I haven't tried this over just a 3G connection as I live out in the country and my service is terrrrrible out here, but what I was able to confirm is that this works over WiFi with no problems. I turned off the Wifi card on my laptop and enabled the Wifi on the phone. A few moments later I got the connection indicator on my laptop (Windows Vista) and away we go. I posted this using the connection. Can anyone confirm this works over 3G?
Screen shots posted below. (Sorry about the blurry pics, I don't have the steadiest hands)
did you update with the RUU?
FYI, this is not "wifi" tethering, it's "wired" tethering.
good to know internet sharing was in the final!
If I understand your question correctly, yeah I updated with the RUU but I wasn't really interested in rooting the phone.
Yes it works, but you need to change your PRI

In other words, no it does not work if you ran the RUU. You would have to be rooted, flash an Eris based ROM, and then update using the SprintUpdate2.zip Damageless posted.

Aside from "Flashing an Eris ROM breaks your PRI" he wouldn't find much. Sometimes you just gotta let it slide and lend a hand.
Are you guys talking about the same thing he is? He said he ran the RUU and is not rooted. He said he doesn't get good 3g where he lives but what he did was turn off wifi on his laptop and enable it on the phone. He enabled internet sharing and it shared his internet connection with the laptop.
This isn't wifi tethering like we usually describe it, but he is describing a different situation than the one you guys are talking about. Unless I missed something in the posts.

You're both right and wrong.
I was assuming that he rooted his phone before updating to 2.1, thought he just made a mistake by adding the ruu part.
And he was asking about 3g tethering since he could do it over wifi.
To answer his question: You cannot tether that way if you ran the official RUU...that is until an exploit is found and you root your phone.
PDAnet will still work for you though
He probably has one of the few Sprint PRI's that allows MNS....bastage.....
Thanks guys, I'll take my laptop to work tomorrow and give it a try with and without PDANet. Thanks for all of the feedback.
What is you PRI number?
Pri version: 2.20_003
I have the same PRI number. How did you get the network sharing to work? Did you download any software?
yeah we need to find out if this new PRI will allow wired tethering, but I don't want to lose root
we need a few people (read: guinea pigs) to test it out
Ok, I got the network sharing via wired tether to work with WIFI. Now if I can get it to work on 3g.
Edit:
I tried to use the 3g network and it will not allow you to wire tether. It will keep popping up error 67 which "Data Call Failure". Boo.
I'm currently trying to figure out where exactly the PRI is stored in a ROM, so I can make update.zip's of different PRI's, to allow tethering.

The hero has always been able to share wifi using the usb tether. The 3G sharing will be disabled for you as always. Sorry to burst your bubble this is not something new. In fact, way back before we had root you could use a trick to tether the 3G over usb by turning off mobile network and then enabling the MNS while turning the mobile network back on. It was just a bug that someone found to bypass the 3G sharing lockout. After we got root no one really needed that trick anymore.

will i be able to share 3g (since no 4g in boston until 4th quarter)

i have been reading about this 30 dollars extra a month to share my 4g connection with laptop, computer and anything that uses wifi...but my questions is, will i have to pay the 30 to share my 3g connetion since boston will not have 4g until 4th quarter 2010??? i currently have a touch pro 2 stock sprint and run xdi wifi sharing on it and anything can pick it up. since the evo is android, will there be a program that i can run out the box to share my wifi? please elaborate as far as the internet sharing abilities of the phone...

PDANet, and once it is rooted you will have more options...free options.
I certainly wouldnt pay the 30 for wifi hotspot... you can get it for less using other software....but its up to you..ya know
Yeah there are a bunch of options once the Evo is rooted, which hopefully will come soon before most people have a chance at it (this is why i think Google gave them out at the developer conference). But the $30 a month is not worth it. wait then root it and have it for free.
i've played with it in google i/o and u can enable tethering even on 3g, now the wifi was so freaking congested there i didn't get the chance to try connecting to it, but chances are good that it works

Still need the $30 plan.
darn it...i guess i will just wait for the phone to be rooted to get a free wifi sharing program. at least the 3g will be unlimited to tether unlike 3g now where they only give you 5gb...(even tho it didnt matter on my touch pro 2 under xda wifi sharing) because it went in as internet usage! lol
I'm more hopeful that once the phone is rooted we will able to use the included wifi hotpsot program without paying the $30.mo. I betcha the hotpost program now sends out something at loin and only ESns with that permission can use it. Every Sprint Windows Mobile and Palm phone I've had in the past could be hacked so that the built in tethering app worked without the need to upgrade my account
isnt the wifi hotspot program the same as allowing other devices to connect to your phone via wifi? is so, when its rooter there will be a program allowing u to do this..unless sprint completely and uterly somehow with alien technology blocked it on teh phone.

If it's a separate ROM, it might not work as it relies on a different WiFi driver (one for access point), which is located somewhere in the ROM. If toast's doesn't have it, then it won't work.
Perhaps toast can put the driver back to where it is on the stock ROM and update his ROM.
Yeah.. doesn't work. I've tried.
I can get it to install, SuperUser permissions from Unrevoked run and I allow it etc.. all is well in the "root" department however... It doesn't show upon any wireless radar anywhere.
At least it runs, was on toasts rom and had to wipe and start from scratch to get unrevoked back on. Wouldn't start on Toasts at all.
So anyway, this doesn't actually do any good if you can't see it to connect to it. :/

Howto: Rootless 3G Mobile Hotspot - AP/Infrastructure Mode #Free4All

The DX bootloader situation sucks... Hope this brightens up someones day...
This was tested on a Motorola Droid X Froyo 2.2(OTA) Rooted
Requirements:
Root(just kidding)
Stock 3G Mobile Hotspot Application
EasySwitch(Trial) by SmartDyne(Download from Market)
1. Download and Setup EasySwitch Widget
2. Fire up 3G Mobile Hotspot and wait for it to fully connect up (30 seconds?)
- If this is your first time running through this, open up your browser and go somewhere. You should get the Verizon Self Provisioning page... If not, you're wasting your money.
3. Now use EasySwitch to cycle the Radio *Off* then back *On* (Top row, 4th from the left... you must do this every time after you fire up 3G Mobile Hotspot)
Voila...
I know this process could be refined some... Who wants to help? #Free4All <- That was an invitation for dialog.

No. Please don't come in a thread acting as if you know everything and have some simple fix with a smart alec response. Wireless Tether is ad-hoc mode, as is Barnacle. This method is access point instead, which some people need specifically as opposed to ad-hoc.

Long story short, 3G Mobile Hotspot switches your phone's data connection from "TYPE_MOBILE" to "TYPE_MOBILE_DUN", which shuts down you your data connection unless you you are subscribed to the 3G Mobile Hotspot service. Cycling 3G off/on in EasySwitch switches your data connection back to TYPE_MOBILE, while keeping 3G Mobile Hotspot open.

No. Please don't come in a thread acting as if you know everything and have some simple fix with a smart alec response. Wireless Tether is ad-hoc mode, as is Barnacle. This method is access point instead, which some people need specifically as opposed to ad-hoc.

TY... Not to mention 2.2 OTA broke security on both of those apps and made them really flaky... 3GMH has WPA2 and so far seems pretty stable...
I turn off and on my 3G and it shuts down my hot spot.
Wow! Seems like de-railing happens alot around here lately. LOL, so anyway, anyone up for trying to make a tasker profile for this?

Sound like you might have cycled wifi instead. I was however incorrect in saying to toggle 3G, when what I really meant was to toggle *Cell Service* which is 4th from the left on the top row in EasySwitch. If it's still trippin, let me know what mods and such that you're running. I just figured this out earlier today so i don't know all the permutation of why it might *not* work. TY for the feedback.

3G is actually the Up & Down Arrows on Easy Switch. The Cell tower is just your basic cell service (non 3G), although it IS the one you must toggle.
Just wanted to clear that up.
This works GREAT by the way, thank you very much for posting!

Thanks for clarifying that. Changed the OP so people don't get confused. Guess I should have known that, but I'm new Android and Phone modding in general so some of the basic things slip by me..
Glad you found this useful. Your feedback is much appreciated!
Awesome, but is there any way to do this without EasySwitch?
e.g. adb? terminal emulator?
I just don't care much for payware, let alone crippleware. :/
I tried this at work ( vzw hahaha) on my phone the way you stated and also tried with another coworkers x. His browser redirected him to vzw provisioning page as described, mine did not since I used the method described. However I was still able to connect another phone to both mine and a coworkers phone. Makes me worry about being charged the overage rate. Any ideas?
*update*
When connected to an x, fascinate redirected to vzw provisioning page. So this does work. Question is, will my bill sky rocket Haha. Gonna investigate further.

The bootloader situation is sickening... Hope this brightens up someones day...
This was tested on my: DroidX 2.2(OTA) Rooted
Requirements:
Root(actually, probably not)
Stock 3G Mobile Hotspot
EasySwitch(Trial) by SmartDyne(Download from Market)
1. Setup EasySwitch Widget
2. Fire up 3G Mobile Hotspot
- If this is your first time running through this, open up your browser and go somewhere. You should get the Verizon Self Provisioning page... If not, you're wasting your money.
3. Use EasySwitch to Toggle *Cell Service* off/on(The Antenna Tower, Top row fourth from the left... you must do this every time after you fire up 3G Mobile Hotspot)
Voila...
I know this process can be refined some... Who wants to help?
I believe the solutions is an app that does the following:
setNetworkPreference(ConnectivityManager.TYPE_MOBILE)
This method may work on other VZ Android phones with a 3G Mobile Hotspot...

if thats the case, why dont we just edit the apk with this option always on and re-sign it again?

ATM, I'm have not tested any other apps that are free that can provide the needed functionality. The other apps I saw on the market seemed to just switch between 2G/3G, and not actually cycle the data connection off and on. Flight mode cycles wifi too, so that's a no go. ADB/Terminal... I tried other methods for doing this, pppd up/pppd down... no go..
Again, this works because of VZ tries to switch our data connection from "mobile", to "mobile_dun", to try and ferry us down their pay pipe... Cycling cell service switches us back to a "mobile" connection while keeping the 3G Mobile Hotspot running.
This is a Work In Progress... I believe that a widget could be made to automatically catch when the data connection gets switched over, and hijack it back. I have good idea of API calls in Dalvik necessary to make this happen, but it's been about 10 years since I really got down on programming anything, and my thing was web interfaces with PERL, never really got into Java. I am interested in Android Developement, so I'm currently tinkering with putting this widget together, but I currently don't have the know-how to put it all together. So EasySwitch is kind of my Proof-of-Concept tool.
I feel you, though. EasySwitch is just the current work around. Does the job, though...

This should more or less be equivalent to Barnacle/Wireless Tether. They all just use your "mobile" data connection.
I believe this to be actually more covert than the "Free 3G Mobile Hotspot for Incredible" method, which actually uses VZ's "mobile_dun" pay pipe, and uses the customers "[email protected]" to authenticate.
So, your bill should not skyrocket.

This was another one of the possibilities I had in mind. I don't really understand how to Decompile .APK's. Do you know how to do this? If it is possible to modify the APK, I would actually just bypass the connection switching routine all together, and just move on to starting up the wifi side of things.
<edit>
If you know more about possibly making this work in this way, which actually would be the cleanest method possible, I'd appreciate any kind of help.
</edit>
^^^ This would run into C&D issues, huh? Back to - mobile()
