Insane data usage - verizon - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone else had really high data usage lately? I have not changed a thing about my phone and Verizon claims I have used 6gb per month for the last two months. Usually I use under 2gb.
They say it's my usage, not their system.I am on wifi about 90% of the day. Any apps that may be causing high usage and I don't know it?

This same thing just happened to me...within the first week of my new billing cycle i got a text showing that i had used all of my data which is 5gb....i know that this was impossible because i had only had my data on a hand full of times because i always use wifi...I had even had data completely turned off in settings...wtf vzw

2 options, 1. check for rogue apps that is sending off data 2. sell the phone and go tmobile for unlimited. I opt for the second option

Looked into the second option, horrible coverage in my area.
First option - How do I check for that?

use apps like wake lock detector but even that you have to know android system real well to define which process that is sending off data. another thing to check is market, make sure its only on "update when on wifi"

Well, did you figure it out? I can't. I called Verizon and they LITERALLY told me that having WiFi meant nothing being turned on and that apps go around wifi to use mobile data. I lol'd and hung up.

Lmao.... some do... anyway, settings mobile data will be decently accurate for mobile and Wi-Fi use if you have no data monitoring apps.

High data usage

Anyone else experiencing high data usage on the x10? I installed netcounter 4 days ago and it says I've used over 45mb. I consider myself to be a light user, no timescape update, no email/weather apps. Auto update switched off etc. I will browse the web and use facebook for say 20-30 minutes a day, check out the store and thats about it.
The phone seems to be accessing the internet on a regular basis, if I have the phone near my alarm speaker I can hear a lot of interference. Its like it is constantly accessing my data connection.
I'm not too worried about costs as I have 500mb per month, but it does seem unusually high. I'm sure this is draining the battery as well Any ideas?
Have you got "location services" switched on? that will use the network.
Data usage does seem to be very high when compared to other phones, last month I clocked up 650MB+ (on a 500MB bundle) even though I was mostly using WiFi. Just had to bump up my data package to unlimited as the extra 150MB cost me nearly £20.
I think you have some programs or widgets which have automatic update.
Is something with X10 or android in general.
I opened a thread like this sometime ago but nobody knows anything.
My experience:
Factory default, nothing configured (twitter, facebook, email, etc), background sync disabled, gps disabled, etc and i had like 12Mb/day day without doing anything.

Very frequent data upload, please help

Hello,
I got a Samsung Galaxy SII I-9100, stock rom, no modification, and no rom update since I bought it.
Since this week-end, I see very frequent data uploads (green up arrow lights up, and network mode changes from 3G to H+). It happens every few seconds/minutes and stays for several seconds or minutes.
Because of that, my phone battery lasts less than a day instead of 2 full days and nights, and it probably also eats my data plans.
I uninstalled all the applications I downloaded, restarted the phone many times, disabled background data and auto-sync, with no success.
I've installed Radioopt Traffic Monitor, I can see the data being uploaded (around 50 KB in 6 hours), but according to the app, it's not send by any application.
The only work around is to long press the power button and disable "Data network mode". But still, I would like to use data and auto-sync without killing the battery (as I was doing before).
Any idea? I heard it might be related to the network itself. I'm on Vodafone Ireland. Might it be anything I installed?
Thanks for your help.
All your apps any apps .
Apps are set to download/update 24 hours a day .
Check each app and turn off its data connection or use an app like Quick Settings to turn mobile data on/off ,
jje
In my opinion 50kb in 6 hours aint high at all..

Hey,
I've found the answer, it might help somebody else in the same case:
I'm on a prepay contract and I had no credit, so I guess the phone was trying to connect to the APN, and the connection was refused, and it was doing this in a loop. After topping up, the problem disappeared.
Cheers
Same problem with my SGS2 but my phone is not sending 50 KB in 6 hours...but rather 200 MB in 5 hours !
I'm not on a prepaid contract, though.
here is a screenshot of the process sending all those data, if anybody can help me...

What keeps enabling Background Data??

I am continually having to disable the Background Data option on my DZ, because something keeps re-enabling it in the background without my knowledge. This happens several times a day. How can I tell which app is enabling it?
Could be Market. You cant log in if you dont have background data enabled. So maybe its got a mind of its own and turns it on.
sometimes could be your people or facebook or email syncing in the background
Maybe silly question but have u disabled "allow always on mobile data" in mobile networks in settings?

If you mean the "Enable always-on mobile data" option then yes I have that unchecked. Is there some way of auditing which apps may be changing the Background Data setting?
Disable automatic syncing, if that doesn't do it you're better of reflashing

Auto-syncing is already disabled. Unfortunately it hasn't helped.
I haven't flashed the phone before so the prospect of doing it (and potentially bricking it) concerns me a little. I'm on software version 1.82.161.1 - is this a fairly recent version?

If I'm not missing anything you don't want your phone to connect at all? Then put something invalid for internet connection APN.
I've already done that. It's the drain on battery that I was concerned about - i.e. continually trying to connect

why dont you just disable mobile network untill you need it?
That's what I meant when I said I'd done it - I have the mobile network disabled by default. Presumably with background data enabled it will still attempt to connect frequently, and consume power, even if data is disabled?

What the heck are you using your phone for then? If you dont want any mobile data, just turn on airplane mode and then enable WiFi for data.
U sound a bit too paranoid. The chances of bricking your phone from flashing your phone one time are slim to none. Sounds like the rom is borked to me. It reminds me of people who are scared to death to click anything in windows cause there scared there gonna break something. There are people on here who WANT to brick there phone cause they want to send it into repair and not have tmobile see its s-off and can't even make the phone brick when purposely trying to.
You seem smart enough, as long as you can read your not gonna mess nothing up! They make these electronic devices idiot proof cause 99% of the users of them are idiots! (Xda users not included). If they were that easy to bust no one would even use a smart phone cause you would be hearing about it every day from all your friends/acquaintances!

Funnily enough I use it to make phone calls. When I need the occasional bit of data (maybe 2-3 times a day) I'll switch on wifi or 3G temporarily for that purpose. That way I may still have some battery left by the evening. Unless there's something else that keeps starting up and draining the battery of course....

Honestly, like the other poster said I think you're being a bit too paranoid. Just let your phone do its thing. Turn off mobile data, and turn off any app's auto-sync functions. If you absolutely don't need your phone to use data other than occasional WiFi it won't make a difference. You're not going to lose battery in any significant way with what these apps are doing.

Ya or use a garbage Nokia phone and do your data stuff on the computer!

Also, if you only need data 2-3 times per day, you should stop paying for a data plan.
I'm on a PAYG plan - 20p per Mb - so it's not a problem.
Incidentally I had a first attempt at rooting yesterday - followed the noob guide elsewhere in this forum but didn't get very far. I'm reasonably technical (a former developer) but the whole rooting thing is far from painting by numbers.
I have an open thread somewhere else on this issue

[Q][SOLVED] Using Internet in background.

Some app or the android system is using my internet connection in background. Even sometimes it is turning on the WiFi itself even if I turn it off. I have a 512Kbps(It's the highest available for regular uses around here) data connection, and it's using the full bandwidth. So it gets hard to do anything on the internet during that time.
So how do I find out how or by which app the data is being used? And what can possibly turn on the WiFi automatically. I've got more than 150apps installed so it's not possible for me to check the problem by uninstalling them one by one.
Edit: It's not happening all the time. I'm facing this problem since 3-4days.
Thanks in advance.

My bet is Facebook. Just an awfully made app. Granted, this was several months ago, but my wife had it....her data plan was only 100mb. At the end of the month her bill was almost double. Put a traffic monitoring app on her phone and discovered Facebook was using 30mb or so per day, even when she barely touched it.
Now she just goes on Facebook through her browser.

Thanks.
But it was not Facebook. I don't have the app installed. I hate the app as it is too much research hungry.
I found out it was YouTube. I had Preload Watch Later ticked. It used 523MB of data in just 2days. But I had only one Video in Watch later list. I tried to play the Video when I figured what was the matter, and it was still loading. So I don't know what YouTube app means by "Preload Watch Later".
BTW thank for the help.

Enable Talk and Data simultaneously [Verizon]

To enable talk and data surfing simultaneously:
Login to Verizon Account online
Search: Advanced Calling
Select Advanced Calling feature (not Q&A)
Enable feature (I have unlimited data, this feature was free on my account)
Wait 15 minutes to take effect to account
On G4
Under settings, Select Advanced Calling
Activate Advanced Calling
If doesnt Activate, wait for another 5 mins, try again
This benefit was provided, free of charge
Posted my response in wrong thread.

Interesting. This was already enabled on my phone. The Verizon person must have activated for me in store when I got it. I also have unlimited data.
Does advanced calling drain the battery as much as VoIP calls over Hangouts does? I can have a 20 minute conversation on hangouts, screen off, and the phone starts to get so hot I have to move my fingers because it's too hot. I took at my phone after and I drop anywhere from 10-20% battery.
I have not had any heat issues on this phone exc while charging w Charger 2.0, which was expected.
I haven't used Hangouts, cant give input w that
I use duel voice/data for conference calls to review information while on calls
Added: I have had exceptional battery life w this phone.
Moderate use gets me 10-12 hours
I know this is a verizon thread, do we know how to do this on AT&T?

It is my understanding the AT&T and Sprint do not have the ability due to having single radios.
If you find a method feel free to comment here and I'll modify the title of this thread

Same thing happened to me yesterday on a hangouts call. Phone got ridiculously hot and had me wanting to return it because I felt there is no way this is normal and something is definitely wrong with my phone. Like you, I dropped at 20% of battery. Still holding on and hoping something comes along soon that makes me feel comfortable about keeping it whether an update or root/bootloader unlock and ability to flash a different ROM.

I don't think this is specific to the G4, all calls I've made using Hangouts get very hot. My G3 did, even on a custom ROM, and with my short time using the Droid Turbo.

AT&T can do this without enabling anything. Try it and find out for yourself.
Thanks! I was able to do it on my Note 2 without the advanced calling, couldn't figure out why on the G4 it was dropping to 1x when on the phone.
This also enables video calling as well. During a call just tap the camera button. Obviously the other person needs advanced calling.

Has anyone had any success activating advanced calling on a rooted g4? I've gone through both my phone and on a computer but every time I go to check it on my phone it still isn't active, even after restarting. I am rooted on stock 11a.
I doubt it's root. If the service is active on your account, you likely need a new sim card. Verizon will swap it out for free. Before trying that, call them up and ask them to reset and resend the configuration. That sometimes will fix it.
Also, you should update to 13B as it has the stagefright fixes. Do a "Normal" flash of the 13B kdz and then flash a rooted 13B system. No loss of data or unrooting needed.
