Some app or the android system is using my internet connection in background. Even sometimes it is turning on the WiFi itself even if I turn it off. I have a 512Kbps(It's the highest available for regular uses around here) data connection, and it's using the full bandwidth. So it gets hard to do anything on the internet during that time.
So how do I find out how or by which app the data is being used? And what can possibly turn on the WiFi automatically. I've got more than 150apps installed so it's not possible for me to check the problem by uninstalling them one by one.
Edit: It's not happening all the time. I'm facing this problem since 3-4days.
Thanks in advance.

My bet is Facebook. Just an awfully made app. Granted, this was several months ago, but my wife had it....her data plan was only 100mb. At the end of the month her bill was almost double. Put a traffic monitoring app on her phone and discovered Facebook was using 30mb or so per day, even when she barely touched it.
Now she just goes on Facebook through her browser.

Thanks.
But it was not Facebook. I don't have the app installed. I hate the app as it is too much research hungry.
I found out it was YouTube. I had Preload Watch Later ticked. It used 523MB of data in just 2days. But I had only one Video in Watch later list. I tried to play the Video when I figured what was the matter, and it was still loading. So I don't know what YouTube app means by "Preload Watch Later".
BTW thank for the help.

Anyone else experiencing high data usage on the x10? I installed netcounter 4 days ago and it says I've used over 45mb. I consider myself to be a light user, no timescape update, no email/weather apps. Auto update switched off etc. I will browse the web and use facebook for say 20-30 minutes a day, check out the store and thats about it.
The phone seems to be accessing the internet on a regular basis, if I have the phone near my alarm speaker I can hear a lot of interference. Its like it is constantly accessing my data connection.
I'm not too worried about costs as I have 500mb per month, but it does seem unusually high. I'm sure this is draining the battery as well Any ideas?
Have you got "location services" switched on? that will use the network.
Data usage does seem to be very high when compared to other phones, last month I clocked up 650MB+ (on a 500MB bundle) even though I was mostly using WiFi. Just had to bump up my data package to unlimited as the extra 150MB cost me nearly £20.
I think you have some programs or widgets which have automatic update.
Is something with X10 or android in general.
I opened a thread like this sometime ago but nobody knows anything.
My experience:
Factory default, nothing configured (twitter, facebook, email, etc), background sync disabled, gps disabled, etc and i had like 12Mb/day day without doing anything.
I ve been having a problem with my x10 downloading crazy amounts of data the last fewdays. for example i left it on over night and in the period from midnight to 8am it used 75mb with only email set to update. when i woke up i could hear it through my computer speakers contantly downloading so i went into the app manager and forced some programs to close, as soon as i closed google talk the data usage stopped and it hasnt started since. this is all despite the fact that ive never used or even opened google talk. so if you are having problems with high data usage its worth checking google talk even if youve never used it.
does anyone know of a way of uninstalling without root or an app that can stop it running without interfering with other apps?

Use a task killer like Taskpanel, then you can set it on the killer list, so it wont run.
Bloke
thanks, got it to auto kill that but ignore everything else.
Is anyone else having a issue with your phone having no service fir a split second causing your data to stop? It does NOT happen if im in a call but if im browsing it just stops and I have to.press refresh.

yeah not only dropping connections but almost unbearable. I'm in NJ and before the 1.8.3 update i could browse the internet fine with mutltiple tabs and so on. Wasn't slow then or fast but it worked. Now after 1.8.3 it just won't work, or will load half a page and break.
I've already tried using the old radio sbf file but that doesn't work with the 1.8.3 update...
anyone else?

I am having the same issue. I am browsing a web page and for a split second (literally, for a fraction of a second), I will not have data signal and the page will tell me either via a pop up that there is no data connection or it simply stops loading and I have to reload the page. Most of the time, I get the pop up saying there is no data connection, I press ok, and the web page continues to load as expected.
For further info, I flashed the 1.26 SBF and updated via the OTA updates. I use the stock browser.
I would say it happens once every 15 minutes of continuous web usage.
Edit: I have no additional problems with the calls or voice call quality.
I've noticed this as well, especially if wifi and/or bluetooth is turned on

This.
Also i was completely fine with the 1.26 and the 1.5xx system updates and could browse multiple pages just fine, however the 1.83 update seems to have borked everything even thought i'm still at work as any other day, so the location did not change.
I've also tried flashing the stock radio back (sbf) but it just doesn't work.
also no calls are dropped, and texts work fine, just data is borked.
I think the radio with the 1.8.3 update maybe the reason my battery life has tanked since the update. I use the same app and have all the same settings and am needing at least two batteries per day with the same level of use. I used to could listen to bluetooth with mixzing or winamp app. 6 hours per day, surf the web all I wanted and text heavily and still have 40% battery after 12 hours. Now after 4 hours of use I am regularly down to 30%. I seriously have checked and my use and settings are the same. I even have used spar parts and watch dog to monitor my app and system processes and I can't find anything out of the ordinary.
Is there a way to check to see if the phone is searching for 3G or HSPA more often and draining more battery?
Same thing happens to me guys. Data connection worked flawlessly on 1.2.6 and 1.5.7. Have sat on the phone (a different one) with att troubleshooting for an hour and they couldn't figure it out...eventually told me to do a factory reset even though I told them jihads already done so...big surprise didn't work. It only happens in certain areas and even then it works sometimes. My theory is it is something to do with how its handshaking with the towers, as I have gone into the service menu and seen it sporatically switch between UMTS and HSPA. Oh and I'm on gingerblur 3.5 but have done hours of testing on a stock flash of 1.8.3 and it has the same issue. Wish att /moto could figure this one out. Anyone find anything yet?
If your talking about constantly switching from (E)dge to (H)SPA I'm having the same issue..
Same here. Areas in which I used to have no trouble and good service now leave me with the no service icon.
Has anyone had better service changing to the 77 radio from .83

I just wasted my time with AT&T by calling them. They told me it was probably a defect and I should exchange my phone.
This seems like a all too common isuue with this phone. I'm guessing the threshold at where it switches is just too finnikey. And whats most aggravating is we can't manually set which type of connection to use.

It's not even that it technically switches services from EDGE to HSPA (the icon always stays as an H), it's that when you go into the service menu it sporadically looks for UMTS (I think EDGE and 2G networks) and HSPA. You can try this out by going to dialer and hitting *#*#4636#*#* and going to Phone Information (it's under network type).
***Edit*** @the last post...I made the same mistake calling AT&T, and unfortunately that's an hour of my life of being talked down to and placated that I will never get back.

I was also having the same problem. I seem to have fixed mine by flashing back to 1.26 and ota back to 1.83.... First I backed up all of my apps. Sbf to 1.26, rooted with aroot, restored all apps, unrooted then ota 1.57 and 1.83. I have not rooted my phone yet but everything seems to work fine now.

That is actually one of the combinations I haven't tried, so if it get so bad as to be unbearable I may try that. Lately, though it hasn't been that bad thankfully.

Hello,
I got a Samsung Galaxy SII I-9100, stock rom, no modification, and no rom update since I bought it.
Since this week-end, I see very frequent data uploads (green up arrow lights up, and network mode changes from 3G to H+). It happens every few seconds/minutes and stays for several seconds or minutes.
Because of that, my phone battery lasts less than a day instead of 2 full days and nights, and it probably also eats my data plans.
I uninstalled all the applications I downloaded, restarted the phone many times, disabled background data and auto-sync, with no success.
I've installed Radioopt Traffic Monitor, I can see the data being uploaded (around 50 KB in 6 hours), but according to the app, it's not send by any application.
The only work around is to long press the power button and disable "Data network mode". But still, I would like to use data and auto-sync without killing the battery (as I was doing before).
Any idea? I heard it might be related to the network itself. I'm on Vodafone Ireland. Might it be anything I installed?
Thanks for your help.
All your apps any apps .
Apps are set to download/update 24 hours a day .
Check each app and turn off its data connection or use an app like Quick Settings to turn mobile data on/off ,
jje
In my opinion 50kb in 6 hours aint high at all..

Hey,
I've found the answer, it might help somebody else in the same case:
I'm on a prepay contract and I had no credit, so I guess the phone was trying to connect to the APN, and the connection was refused, and it was doing this in a loop. After topping up, the problem disappeared.
Cheers
Same problem with my SGS2 but my phone is not sending 50 KB in 6 hours...but rather 200 MB in 5 hours !
I'm not on a prepaid contract, though.
here is a screenshot of the process sending all those data, if anybody can help me...

Has anyone else had really high data usage lately? I have not changed a thing about my phone and Verizon claims I have used 6gb per month for the last two months. Usually I use under 2gb.
They say it's my usage, not their system.I am on wifi about 90% of the day. Any apps that may be causing high usage and I don't know it?

This same thing just happened to me...within the first week of my new billing cycle i got a text showing that i had used all of my data which is 5gb....i know that this was impossible because i had only had my data on a hand full of times because i always use wifi...I had even had data completely turned off in settings...wtf vzw
2 options, 1. check for rogue apps that is sending off data 2. sell the phone and go tmobile for unlimited. I opt for the second option

Looked into the second option, horrible coverage in my area.
First option - How do I check for that?
use apps like wake lock detector but even that you have to know android system real well to define which process that is sending off data. another thing to check is market, make sure its only on "update when on wifi"

Well, did you figure it out? I can't. I called Verizon and they LITERALLY told me that having WiFi meant nothing being turned on and that apps go around wifi to use mobile data. I lol'd and hung up.
Lmao.... some do... anyway, settings mobile data will be decently accurate for mobile and Wi-Fi use if you have no data monitoring apps.
