Question to all knowledagble ROM cookers ou there

Hi,
There's one thing that bothers me in every ROM out there and even on my own. I don't have an unlimited data plan and I hate the fact that I have pull my SIM card every time I want to try a new ROM. The problem is that if I don't, I'll be charged for access cause every ROM has the mobile connection enabled by default.
I can't find any setting anywhere in the ROM files to change this behavior... Maybe I overlooked? Does anyone if it can be done and how?

AFAIK you can just press menu when you're in setup and then choose to edit APN. Go to your APN and just put a random letter somewhere in the address to prevent it from working.
At least it's possible doing that using a vanilla ROM, not sure about sense
IIRC, during setup it asks if you want to connect through mobile network & wifi or wifi only. Just select Wifi only.

Exactly, "during setup" and not at startup. It always connects through before I can select "wifi only".

Indeed. The setting is initially set to Mobile Network & Wi-Fi, until you change it in the setup wizard or settings. It's really annoying for people with no data-plan.
You could remove the APN list from your ROM to prevent it. Also, there are a few XML files with default settings. If you are lucky, it contains the Data Connection settings, and you can change it.

Maybe a lead lined room would help?

Maybe for you and your country network operators. It's not about the data downloaded or the time it takes for me to disconnect it. As soon as it makes a connection, I'm charged a fee.
just hold the END button and chosse turn mobile network off?
Yeah, this is a problem for me. ROMs never used to do this so it wasn't a problem, but recent ROMs have started connecting as soon as I first turn them on, which costs me 99¢ each time.
(The pricing is: 99¢ per day for 50MB, and anything extra is charged per KB)
I've lost a couple of euro to this. It's not a big deal, but it's a pain alright.

[Q] Can't turn off 3G

I don't have an unlimited data plan so I normally turn my 3G on and off manually when I need to. But today my 3G icon keeps coming up on the tab even when i have the settings as off. I checked my data usage from my carrier and it is indeed eating up data. I've tried restarting the phone but it's still the same.
Any idea of why this is happening and how to resolve this?
Thanks in Advance

try APNdroid, you can find it in the Market.

If you have your data disabled then it shouldn't be coming on. Check your permissions to see if you have an app on your phone that has permission to mess with your network settings.

APNDroid would work for your situation very well, however, I've had problems sending MMS's when I've had APNDroid installed (even with "enable MMS" checked).
Another option that would probably work very well is DroidWall (on the market-free). It's a firewall for your mobile data and WiFi, customizable for each allowing individual programs through. A widget on your homescreen turns it on or off. You could have it set so programs can always use WiFi, yet mobile data is blocked unless you turn the widget to "off". That wy no programs can actually transmit anything even if they have permissions set in the program. DroidWall has final say of what leaves.
I downloaded 3GWatchdog free, and was so impressed I purchased the Pro version for ~$2.50. The Pro version allows you to see specifically what program has used mobile data, and how much. That, along with DroidWall, will allow me to completely customize and control my mobile data while still retaining as much functionality as possible.
Ok Well I downloaded both APNDroid and Watchdog and now I can't even turn on 3G. I just uninstalled both of them and turn my phone off and on still no 3G.
Thanks anyway guys. I getting really close to giving up on Android and moving to the iphone. Every other day there's a new problem with this mobile OS and I always have to download an app rectify something that shouldn't be happening in the first place. It's getting ridiculous.

Did you turn your mobile data back on before uninstalling APNdroid? If not, you might want to look into that
No offense, but I dont think its Android that is the problem. Have you taken the time to fully understand the phone? I havent had a hitch since I got this phone. Once you reinstall APNdroid, enable your data, and then remove the app. If you would like to manually turn off your mobile data then do this menu>settings>wireless & networks>mobile networks>uncheck data enabled
If you dont want to go through the hassle of that, download an app to do it for you. Quick settings can do it. Open quick settings>menu>preference>statusbar shortcut *To access quick settings from status bar* Then hit back>menu>customize>move up mobile data(APN) from hidden settings. Then all you have to do is click on or off for mobile data.
You can also download various widgets that can do this for you without having to go into quick settings. APNdroid being one of them. I use Widgetsoid.

Disabled mobile data prevents download of picture messages

So I turn my mobile data off to save battery, but when I get a picture message it says "Downloading..." and when I put mobile data back on, it NEVER DOWNLOADS.
How can I get these pictures to download now that I've restored the data connection?
yeah it needs 3G connection for mms. Not sure why it wouldn't go ahead and download after enabling it though

I wonder if I can clear message cache somehow?
I had problems with my mms as well. I found it was a DNS problem. I found the dns_level 3zip and flashed it with cws and it started to work again. Just search custom dns

[Q] Mobile Data on Nexus 4

I purchased a new, unlocked, Nexus 4 several days ago. I had a new SIM card installed by T-Mobile the same day. Since I have a plan with a 2 GB mobile data download, I want to keep an eye on my mobile data use. I set up the entire phone using only WiFi, and the data download info under WiFi shows it. The Mobile data also continues to grow.....not by much...only 5.24 MB over three days. Other than several phone calls I am not aware of any data downloads via the mobile phone. Can anyone help by telling me what gives? Thanks.

Not sure what caused that but even if you go over your 2GBs of data you won't be charged, you will just be reduced to edge speeds.

My thanks to everyone who helped me.
I found this answer to fit my situation best. Per your advice I found what apps are using the mobile data, and each one to what extent. I also found that I can turn my mobile data off. I had no idea that certain apps periodically use the mobile data in the background. Obviously this is my first smartphone. Thankfully, I have several Nexus 7's to have a least a little experience with this device.

[Q] How to solve the Mobile Data problem after Kit Kat update

Hi,
I have updated my Galaxy Grand 2 mobile to Kit Kat. Everything works fine as of now, except the Mobile Data.
Problem sequence:
1) Keep both wifi and mobile data on.
2) Turn off wifi
3) you will not get mobile data for (more) some time.
4) Later it is working (but not all time).
can somebody provide solution for this. This kind of issue is not there with 4.3.
Try this, for me is ok:
if you have mobile data on sim1, then:
1 - switch mobile data on sim2
2 - on prompt select "NO"
3 - and right away then select again mobile data on sim1
I hope it works...
