help switching to straighttalk - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I did the domestic sim unlock and had my phone working on T-Mobile for the past few days but I had terrible service, edge only.. so I got a Straight Talk sim and popped it in and my phone is not picking up the Straight Talk network.. when I go in to select the mobile network there is AT&T and T-Mobile only.. and so I switched to automatic and it tried to go to Sprint. I don't know what to do.. the Straight Talk customer service guy couldn't figure it out either.
HELP?!

I am stupid
I got it.. used the wrong sim card.. ugh. FYI to anybody buying the activation kit for straight talk trying to do the same thing, it's the nano sim for t-mobile/gsm phones that you need, not the micro sim

how do u do the domestic sim unlock?

[Q] Do I need another sim to enter unlock code?

I received the unlock code for my at&t streak, but don't have another sim to install. Is there a way to enter it with my original at&t sim installed? Thanks in advance.
To my knowledge thats the only way. I havent found an entry other than that.

Thats the only way i found to unlock it... I bought a 19.99 prepaid T-mobile phone at walmart to get a sim card.

If you need a sim card let me know. as long as your in the us i can mail it to you. all i ask is you pay for shipping
I just asked a friend to borrow his SIM for a minute
Thank you for the replies. I forgot, my nextel from work had a sim in it. Problem solved, streak unlocked.
How and where did you get the code from?
Thanks
so, why unlock the phone anyways if you dont have another sim card?
I am on AT&T and unlocked my device so when I travel, all I have to do is pick up a sim card and I am back in action.

Just what gordata said. I´m in mexico now, but unlocked before I left without another sim. Just put SIM in and you are taken to the unlock screen. I imagine there must be a way to get to that screen without a new SIM card.

[Q] How to check if phone is GSM unlocked

Hey guys bought my HD2 off craigslist and he claimed it to be GSM unlocked. This means i can use it overseas on those GSM carriers right? or on ATT here in the states? If so how can i tell it is truly unlocked? Thanks again great xda-developer members!
put a sim in it, any sim except the original networks sim. if it askks for an unlock code its locked.

There is no such thing as a CDMA SIM card, aside from Nextel SIM cards that use the iDEN network. Try another SIM.

Yeah there isn't that's why I questioned the fact of the sim card being from a cdma phone. But you were eight apparently you can put the card in too far lol. It found the card and just said mobile network unavailable. No passwords or anything. So I'm guessing it is unlocked?

[Q] Straight Talk Tmo- Buy $15 sim from ST or buy others online?

I am sorry if this has been asked already, I searched and couldnt find anything. I will be switching from Verizon to Tmo Straight Talk with a N4 and I was wondering if I need to pay $15 for the ST tmo sim or can I use other sim cards from tmobile, simple mobile or anyone else? If so is there a good place to buy them?
I was also told that I can't use the same sim on 2 phones (I'll have to use MyTouch 4g until the N4 comes in the mail), is that also true? Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

I'm not sure but search the web for promo codes. They offer their Sims cheaper that 15 with promo codes from time to time. Google straight talk promo codes, check retailmenot.com, etc.

Some times you can find one, sometimes not...

I would think you need a ST sim card! For GSM they use both T-mobile and ATT though, the only micro sim they have is for ATT. If you order the T-mobile sim you would have to cut it down to micro sim size.
I almost went with Straight Talk, but I'm going to try T-mobile $30 prepaid plan first.
On their website would I purchase Unlocked GSM phone sim or Tmobile compatible sim? Here's the link so you can see what I'm referring to. Thanks
They only offer T-Mobile SIM cards, not MicroSIM cards (which the N4 takes). If you want an N4 on T-Mobile's network via Straight Talk, select T-Mobile (NOT unlocked) and be prepared to cut the sim to MicroSIM size.

Converting Sprint S4 to ATT

I get my wife a used S4 today that was previously on the Sprint network. We are on ATT and i planned on rooting the phone any ways. What all do i need to change to get rid of the sprint phone number that is on the phone, and what do i need to flash to make it work with the att network?
Don't believe it's possible. ..Sprint is CDMA and dont use SIM cards ATT uses GSM and SIM cards

I'm sorry to have to disagree with this but I own a blackberry 9630 world phone from sprint and the sim slot works both with at&t as well as tmo. I understand ad long as contract is fulfilled and any etf's are paid Sprint will unlock sim slot and it will work with any carrier, gsm and CDMA alike. Try using an Att/T-Mobile sim on an s4. It will be blocked even if the phone has been unlocked. Previous phones from sprint did not block USA native gsm but as of lately they do.
My good ol htc touch pro was a lucky one to work on USA gsm as of course your old black Berry.
You get it now? Its an accepted fact sprint has been going out of their way to block USA native gsm access on their latest phones. Perhaps some new ones aren't but the s4 is unless a work around is done but it doesn't work for everyone.

HTC One
This isn't entirely true. I unlocked my Sprint HTC One to run on aio wireless which is on the ATT network. I haven't unlocked my Galaxy S4 but I intend on giving it a shot.
Call sprint and ask for a subsidy unlock code.
You'll need to provide the IMEI
*#06# on the keypad. After they give you the code, try a gsm sim. Hope this helps.

Or buy an unlock code from Amazon or ebay if they wont give it to you ofcourse

thinking of doing the same with my s4 on sprint and going to aio. Been with sprint over a decade and finally over it. In houston and lte sucks.
wow that sucks, because even Verizon who is the greediest of them all will let you use their phone on both AT&T and T-Mobile. I have the AT&T Galaxy S4 and I can use my phone on T Mobile as well.

I think I've read about people unlocking for use on metro pcs which is tmobile. Thanks for heads up though, probably gonna have to buy one when I switch.
I unlocked a Sprint s4 and I am able to make calls with a AT&T micro sim in but cannot get data and texts working. I had to downgrade the baseband to get into hidden menu, but I stopped there. In the hidden menu you have to make some changes but I was scared that if I got it to work on at&t I wouldnt be able to get it back working on Sprint. Everyone does say that Sprint doesnt allow anyone to use other domestic carriers.

I just gotten off the phone with a Straight Talk rep and she said that there sim cards wouldnt work in verizons phones.....and she also said that T-Mobile wouldnt work. I also went to ST web page and checked to see if my phone was compatable by looking at a list of devices on the b.y.o.b my SM-N900V wasnt on the list however it gave me the option of entering my MEID # and it said it was compatable. Just a little confused....does it work or not.

What's so funny? Am I missing something? As I understand it, all verizon note 3's are unlocked... here's what I'm basing this off of: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2480320
wanted to know this too!!
before i left for vacation (here in the PHILIPPINES) i tried using a T-MOBILE simcard on my NOTE3. it worked perfectly OK. thought its unlocked for any GSM network.
when i got here (PHILIPPINES), immediately put in a local simcard and it says "NON-VERIZON SIM" and cant get any signal.
tried all three major phone networks simcards and they all dont work.
can anybody please let us know what is the workaround to this issue?
any help is greatly appreciated!!! c",)

Ah, fair enough. The intention wasn't to do this - the verizon note 3 is from ebay and came factory unlocked. I was planning to use it on verizon till I learned their $60/$70 prepaid plans don't support 4G devices
So, found straight talk, checked this phone's IMEI in their system and it said it'd work... but it's not. There's a lot of confusion out there.. people in this thread saying it "just works" on tmobile and at&t, some saying that it "just works" on straight talk (even mentioning that they're using the at&t compatible sim), but so far, no luck for me.
Here are the confusing points:
1) The verizon note 3 comes factory unlocked. If this is true, why do links like the one you just sent me even exist?
2) The straight talk bring your own device kit from walmart ($60, includes one month of $45 unlimited everything) comes with 5 separate activation options:
- AT&T-compatible full-sized sim
- AT&T-compatible micro sim
- Tmobile-compatible full-sized sim
- Tmobile-compatible micro sim
- CDMA scratch-off network access number
The AT&T ones say "4G LTE available", T-mobile ones say "4G HSPA+ Available", and the CDMA one doesn't mention anything about 3 or 4g, so naturally I thought I should try the AT&T one first. I activated this sim card on straight talk, ported my number, once that was complete I put it in the note 3 and booted up - and I have no service, "emergency calls only", and "non-verizon sim". Just to be certain the phone is unlocked, I tried a completely different, genuine t-mobile sim in the same phone and it worked fine.. it still says "non-verizon sim" but I have service and can make calls.
Really hoping someone can shed some light on what might be happening here.

Aha, thankfully my problem was a simple one - I called straight talk and had them check the status of the sim card I was trying to use (the micro at&t compatible one) - turns out, it still wasn't activated. SO - they activated it right then and there and everything started working immediately on the phone, too - started right up with the same 4G service my tmobile phone gets in our neighborhood.
SO - in case any one else stumbles upon this, YES, you can use a VERIZON galaxy note 3 with the straight talk AT&T-compatible sim card with the factory stock verizon ROM and no further unlocking. What a crazy world we live in
I have a Verizon note 3 running on T-Mobile. I bought a prepaid plan starter kit at Walmart. It came with the sim and the first month service for $42. Any T-Mobile sim will work. All I did was pull my Verizon sim out and replace it with the T-Mobile sim. Changed the apn settings and it works great! I had to root and other stuff to enable band 4, but you won't have to. The latest update enabled it.

What data do you get with T-Mobile ? Edge , LTE , hspa ? Where do you live if you dont mind me asking ? Have you tried installing tmobile Roms at this point ? Thanks !!
The vzw Note 3 on T-Mobile gets full 4G lte AND hspa+ 21 mbps (on areas reformed to 1900mhz pcs band, not on their original AWS band 4 1700/2100 mhz hspa+ 42 mbps).

I work several blocks from downtown Pittsburgh and I live 15 miles outside of Pittsburgh. Both places I get ~80dBm and 100dBm signal with 20mb - 35mb down, and 10 to 20 up. I'm only on hspa occasionally, but speeds are fast. Their edge network is painful. I'm not on it often in the area but when I am I get ~.15mb - .20mb downloads. I would try to find someone in your area that has T-mobile and see what kind of service they get before switching.

Ok. Sorry if I posted in the wrong section. I just need to know which note 3 to buy and if it will work. I will keep reading and searching but wanted a little direction.
Thanks for any help
Sure CUZ... just remember Verizon is CMDA and AT&T is GSM they are both bootloader locked and will need safestrap work-a-round!
Good Luck

Straight Talk Verizon Note 3 activation
I have a VZW Note 3, after contacting Straight Talk's *(microchasm) support I am told by a human that the IMEI# of the phone is not compatable with their "bring your own phone" system. I have the micro sim card in the phone, I think I just need them to turn it on... Sorry if I am over simplifying things, at this point I am completely irate. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The previous arrangement with VZW was a concession line that was canceled.
