I have a rooted and CM11 nexus 7. The left speaker is screwed up, like everyone else's, but I don't really want to RMA it for such a simple issue, and I don't want to lose my warranty by fixing it myself in case something else explodes.
Is it possible, with root to ENTIRELY disable that speaker, possibly through a balance adjustment. It would be *preferable* if this balance adjustment only applied to the speakers and not the headphone jack.
I don't want to know about PowerAMP, because the primary problem is YouTube videos, and notifications (and everything else that PowerAMP isn't).
You can easily do this on apple devices, through the accessibility settings, then speaker balance.
I know about the guide for the ASUS transformer, I can't find the file (though I didn't grep for it either Now I did. Nothing.)

Has anyone found a way (or an app) to increase the mic volume? When I am google video chat with someone they say they can hardly hear me.
Snap! I was just about to post the exact same question. I've hunted aroudn and found a fair few people asking the quetsion in various threads but can't seem to find an answer, I know it can be done as I've had it too loud on other phone and they've tweaked it and altered the volume so surely it's fairly easy tweak (if you know what to tweak) to do it the other way. Probably just altering a register somewhere.
We got my mother in law a transformer and she calls us on Google talk. She can't hear us very well and we can only just hear her too. I know the speakers are very quiet but Google talk is just silly, even at full volume it's still very quiet.
I would also be very interested in learning if there is a way to increase mic volume.
Thus far I'm not aware of a way, but I too have the same issue. Mic is ludicrously quiet, only picks me up reasonably well if I turn the tablet so the microphone points directly to me (and hence, I can't see the screen).
Short of Asus fixing it, or a third-party making a fix (which will likely need root access to apply), the only solution is to use an external microphone.
Similar experience with Gtalk.. however not much of a problem with Skype.. heard that the pinout is similar to iphone.. so any iphone compatible headset should do the trick.
when speaking to my mother in law my father in law iss often there as well so headset is not an option.
Yet another thing we need a fix for! This fix list is geting longer Poor sound at the best of time to having quiet poor sound makes it almost unuseable!
i have the same problem with Fring
lets hope one of the clever bods can fix it for us
I am rooted and this was one of the reasons I did it.
Rooting is very easy to do on here now with the pure root package and I can't really see any downside to it other than it doens't update OTA but thats hardly a killer.
The microphone is bad on the Acer A500 as well. Trying to use the google voice to text is rather frustrating because it affects the accuracy of the translation. I was hoping the asus would be better in this regard, but if it's not then there's no point in switching tabs. I guess I will just have to speak LOUDER!
Rob
nobody worked out a way of fiing bad mic volume then?
The sad thing about the mic's location on the TF is that it is facing the wrong direction to pick up any voice. I too, am having issues with the TF not picking up my voice very well. I was hoping that there is a fix by now, but guess not.
voodoo
For rooted users you can install the voodoo kernel which improves audio including micropone volumes. From what i read I am tempted to root my device just for this.
Search on the market for voodoo, (and then show me how you did it

I wasn't aware voodoo had any effect on mic? Plus it has not effect on speaker volume, only volume / quality on headphone output (can connect external speakers to it via that) I may be wrong though. I already have voodoo but use volume+ to increase built in speaker volumes. Mic is still terribly quiet
HI there guys.
Brand new to this forum.
I've searched for days and I'm unable to find a solution.
I'm experiencing a crackling or a distortion on phone calls at certain volumes. I noticed it with certain pitches in peoples voices it would cause a vibration in the ear speaker and some distortion in the sound. Kind of like the speaker is being over driven or has too much power going to it. It usually goes away if I turn the volume almost all the way down, but this is obviously not a practical option since I'm not always making phone calls in a dead silent room. The speaker phone works fine. This only happens when I'm using the earpiece. Is this normal? Is it related to the camera autofocus sensor rattle? Are the sound vibrations from a person's voice enough to set off the rattle? It's really annoying as I tend to make phone calls a lot and I don't like using speaker phone or a headset. Does anyone else have this problem?
From what I can tell, it happened and was normal in the S4. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2280930).
Please help. Im deciding if i need to return it.

It's too bad that you didn't describe it in more detail.. i.e. give us steps to replicate it. A recording of the distortion would have been helpful too. I haven't noticed what you describe but it sounds like the gain or auto gain is too high and your earpiece speaker is being overdriven.
There is a gain setting in the service mode menu but first you need to distinguish an app issue or possibly damaged speaker before messing around in the hidden settings. See if you can find an audio app that will give you a wider adjustment range for your system volume and gain.,

Thank you for the reply.
If you go into the service menu, the go into the low frequency test. At 100hz and 200 hz there is a little bit of buzz in the headset reciever unless you really push it against your face (which i assume kind of tightens the spaces in the plastic and prevents whatever vibration in the speaker is occuring).
Hmm.. the vibration is akin to as if you were speaking into some cellophane wrap; like some film (maybe for waterproofing) is covering the speaker.
Oh. It's also worth noting that I cannot replicate the issue on Skype or Viber. Those sound crystal clear.
Bump. Anyone?
I have had a white Z5 Compact for a week and have now noticed that the bottom speaker is much louder than the top, ruining the stereo effect. I am sure it did not come this way out of the box. I didn't notice until after the recent firmware update (32.0.A.6.152), but cannot know whether this is the cause of the problem. I went through the hassle of factory reset and the phone still has the problem. I haven't subjected the phone to any physical trauma at all and will be returning it.
I've had 4 (seeking a good camera) and the 3 that I tested this on were all like this.
Will almost certainly be "fixed" with custom roms in future.
Dont have this problem on 152
I have it the other way around, top speaker was soft first out of the box and after the update it seems to have fixed itself.
Problem seems to have fixed itself...
Weirdly, the speakers seem to be working fine now. Hope it's not a hardware issue.
Just out of curiosity, have you noticed any change with the different audio settings? Are they all off or do you have any of the DSEE HX, ClearAudio+, or Dynamic normalizer on? It may help to decide if it is hardware or software. One of the Audio settings codecs could be screwing with the volume and stereo effect.
I feel that the issue is software related. When I am on a call and switch it to Audio Output the bottom speaker is far louder than the top. I'm unsure if the top is putting out any sound at all really. But if I play a YouTube video or regular song, the stereo effect is playing equally from both top and bottom speakers. Not to mention talking on the phone normally is obviously through the top speaker and it works.
I did'nt have any of the Sony specific audio settings turned on. I ended up asking for an exchange - don't want to take the risk of it being hardware given it's international no warranty. Someone on another forum suggested perhaps I had gotten the phone wet, as that tends to muffle the speakers, but not the case - I have no intention of testing the waterproofness that Sony has backed away from
Update
I have experienced the problem on my exchange phone, but it is intermittent. Example: listening to Google Music after taking a phone call. I suspect it's software related - a sort of "mode" bug, where the phone was in one mode and is passing from another. Similar to how auto-brightness sometimes makes black colors look washed out when waking the phone.
Annoying but I like the phone enough that I'm keeping it. I just feel that if you like a compact phone (under 5" screen) - Sony's the only Android game in town.
I have a white international with the opposite. I watch YouTube with the phone at an angle to make it sound anything like it should..
Hi All.
Have not posted on here in a LONG WHILE, but here goes:
Recently I got my hands on a Note 4 (SM-N910S) (its one of those Korean models that have LTE-A X3)
and when I first got my hands on it it was fine and all, but after a while, whatever earphone I plugged in, it sounded weird, and the only solution was to bias the sound to the left (in PowerAmp, my music app of choice) which somehow centered the sound but it sounded like it was on Mono the whole time as I could not hear the whole range of speakers being used.
Last week I dropped by a repair center and asked for a jack replacement, they charged me 10$ for the part and about 20$ for the labor (I was busy so I said hell with it). After I received it back, There is still a problem
Now what happens is the sound appears to be very muddy, and if, for example I was listening to something with a large variety of sound, like heavy metal or EDM, it sounds really drowned and far away, and the bass seems non-existent at all, and the speakers which seem like they are there for bass and/or sound directed to sort of rear-way are not working at all, and the treble side of things seem very harsh. When I bias the sound to the left now, what happens is the volume seems to decrease!
So before I spend any money on this thing, I want to know if you guys think I still need the jack replaced (this time by me maybe) or if something else is wrong, because I use this phone heavily for music (nearly 30gb worth loaded on it, used very heavily, on the daily) as well as for entertainment purposes, so it is very important to me I get this thing on track.
Any advice is welcome, as I am also quite desperate to solve this issue.
Oh, and the phone is pretty much brand new, got it on christmas/januaryish, and has never been damaged or used hardly, its only been rooted, and is currently on 5.1.1
IF I did post this to the wrong section, mods I am sorry, please feel free to move it.
Thanks in advance to any help. :good:
Have you tried adjusting the sound settings on the music player app? Does this happen with other headsets?

Yes I have, as I said, ive tried multiple headsets, and ive tried all the settings and multiple apps. I can tell it is a hardware problem since when I send the sound to the left earphone, it only lowers the volume, but the sound doesn't move/bias.
Why not try a pair of bluetooth headphones. It will establish if there are problems with the sound DAC of the board or if it is a hardware fault pertaining to the headphone jack connectors. If its the sound DCA it might also go away with a reflash of the factory image through Odin.
Does anyone know of a way to change audio balance on headphones on my 6T without resrting to root methods? Im partially deaf in one ear, and want to boost volume on that side only to help balance the audio properly. Seems like such a simple feature Im surprised its so hard to find a solution.
I think root with Viper or similar is your only option.
