Verizon g2 international data? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Going to Nicaragua in a month.
Was going to take the g2 and simply swap out the SIM with a local carrier.
Any chance this will work without incredibly expensive Verizon international plan?
Thanks, and sorry for the noob question...

Yes. The GSM portion of Verizon phones are unlocked out the box.

Any Sprint phone should work in theory.
So I could get any sprint smartphone and root & rom it and install J.b. on it.and also I-wireless service should work to operate the phone such as talk, text & web correct?

Call I-wireless and see. Just say you wanna bring on your own phone and see what phones you can put on their service.
iwireless partners with T-Mobile, not Sprint. iwireless is a GSM carrier, so DO NOT put a Sprint load on an iwireless phone. I too am waiting/looking for a 4.1 update on my iwireless Galaxy Nexus, which brought me here.

Here it is Sprint.

Here in Arizona I-wireless partners with sprint.

Sprint may be partners, but that doesn't mean sprint branded phones will work on iwireless. T-mobile may work, because they are affiliates. (T-mobile owns iWireless)
You could always shop around for an unlocked GSM phone. By buying an unlocked/international phone you are able to jump to any carrier with a GSM network and sim card setup. Even though the phone may cost more, it is well worth it. (it also retains its value much better for resale) I am using a international factory unlocked Galaxy SIII on iWireless with no problems.
I recently dropped AT&T to go with iwireless pay-in-advance, went from $102 a month for 450 minutes, unlm messaging, 3gb data to $57 for unlimited everything. Now, hopefully iwireless jumps on getting their hspa+ (3G/3.5G) towers up so I can fully enjoy the service instead of having edge all the time.
So if you were still looking I would check ebay if you want brand new sealed in box, and another site called swappa for used phones. I've personally used swappa, it is a buy/sell/trade for used android phones. A few friends also used swappa and I would recommend the site to anyone. If I'm not mistaken they also have something to do with the CyanogenMod community. HERE is a link.
Let me set the record straight.
i wireless is a T-Mobile affiliate.
HOWEVER,
i-wireless is another affiliate, but of Sprint.
They are two different companies.

Flash to prepaid?

anyone know of any good stickies on flashing a Samsung s3, note, or any other new Samsung, or iphone. im curious which prepaid carrier is the best to flash to. and should I try to get a phone with a sim card? just looking for some ideas. thanks
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
Are you implying that you currently have a phone on a postpaid plan, and you want to use it on a prepaid plan? What are you thinking of flashing?
well ill put it this way. my friend wants a nice phone on prepaid. doesn't care about cost. he has 2 phones now. one is on straight talk other is on T-Mobile..he wants a nice phone I was curious if anyone has done it and if anyone had any suggestions on what phone to use with what prepaid. like Sprint Verizon or AT&T iphone 4/5 on tmobile or straight talk. or a Sprint galaxy s3...he'll use just about any new-ish phone.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
I guess the 1st decision is what service he wants to go with. Phones are either CDMA or GSM, and not both, with few exceptions (like the new iPhones). So, if he gets a Verizon phone, he can't use it on T-Mobile or AT&T prepaid, and vice versa.
Since cost of the device is no issue, he just has to buy one that's factory unlocked (a.k.a., SIM unlocked).
apologies, I personally have an s3 through Sprint which Ive rooted along with numerous other phones just never did anything of this nature. so I should have him buy a phone that takes a SIM card we'll say and use either straight talk SIM card or tmobile? as an example.

where would be the best place to buy factory unlocked phones? ebay? and obviously the easiest would be to go the SIM card route
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
If the phone he has/gets is unlocked, he should have no problem swapping the SIM cards, and using the phone on either provider. If you want help mulling over specifics of what particular phone to buy, post it here. You'll get shut down if you start a thread asking what phone to buy.

"Best" is subjective. Some would say to buy it from the manufacturer, as then you would have warranty, return policy, & everything.
well I talked to him and he says he'd prefer to go the galaxy s2 or 3 route. would it be cheaper to buy a unlocked GSM s2? im just confused about the SIM ordeal and what carrier to go with, with what phone. I've tried changing MEID before on a epic to use it on straight talk, which it was CDMA but I couldn't get the MEID to write properly so that was a fail.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
Yeah, you don't have to deal with that stuff with GSM phones. That whole "flashing to another provider" thing is a CDMA issue. Basically, any unlocked GSM phone will work, with any GSM provider.
Another thing to consider, though, is 4G data speeds. AT&T (and their MVNOs) and T-Mobile (and their MVNOs) use different frequencies for the highest speed cellular data connections. For example, if you buy an AT&T phone and then unlock it, you won't get 4G data speed on Simple Mobile, since Simple Mobile is a T-Mobile reseller. Therefore, even when you've finally decided which phone to buy, you still need to decide which bands you want it to have, based primarily on which service provider you plaln to go with. One exception to this is the Galaxy Nexus HSPA+, which is pentaband, and can be used just about anywhere, at full speed.
nice. any suggestions for iphone? My apologies. just seems those appear to be the cheapest route via ebay for a gsm unlocked one.

I assume you live in Richmond VA. You probably have a choice between T-Mobile or AT&T 3G/4G. T-Mobile is far better than AT&T and the Monthly Prepaid stuff from T-Mobile isn't bad. I like the $30 plan personally.

There's two 30$ plans (the one with 100min, unl texts and 5GB data and a 1500 min/texts and a small amount of data (30MB?? I forget))
You should be specific. The 5GB data one is only available online or at Wal-Mart.
The other one is available in T-Mobile stores.
Sent from somewhere....if I could only remember where....
Richmond Indiana, my apologies. I appreciate all of the suggestions. I can root phones and such no problem, very new to this prepaid & gsm(sim card) stuff, as I have had Sprint for 6 years lol

so I can order a iphone 3g gsm unlocked for like $120 on eBay (or is there a better place to order them?) and it will work with a straight talk sim card? it's for a friend, im not a fan of either xD

[Q] Pre-paid data only plan, no voice

Is there a pre-paid data only plan that I would be able to use with the nexus 4? I am in the US and AT&T is the only carrier with 3G where I am. Are there actual data-only plans that use AT&T towers that I could use? If not, would there be a way that I could use a prepaid tablet data plan from AT&T? Thanks
I believe straight talk also has data only plans, but not sure if they will work on a phone. Their phone plans are way better than ATT though, and you get same ATT towers/service.

T-Mobile has a 5gb, unl Text and like 100min plan for $30. you get some mins but not alot. You also get T-Mobiles 42 Mbps HSPA+ as well.
That at&t/straight talk may work. I only get edge on T-Mobile in the whole state of Maine so T-Mobile won't work.

Although I don't really need voice/texting and would rather not pay if I don't need to

AT&T themselves have a prepaid tablet plan: http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/plans/dataplans.html
I wonder if they allow that on the Nexus 4. You'd probably have to change APN.

I was looking at that one. You have to give them your IMEI number and I don't have a tablet to do that.

Go into an AT&T store and surreptitiously snoop the IMEI of one of their Android tabs?

That's a great idea lol

And like I said earlier I can't use T-Mobile because they have terrible service in the whole state of Maine. If I could get AT&T's 3gb $30 tablet plan to work I'd be a happy camper.

Yes, as pointed out upthread, all comparisons to T-Mobile are irrelevant because T-Mobile is not an option for the OP.
I think I'll got to an AT&T store today and snoop on the tablet IMEI numbers. That is unless someone wants to give me one of theirs, preferably not one registered on AT&T. Why do I have to go through so much trouble just to get a data only plan?!

I can give you the IMEI of my T-Mobile Springboard but there's no guarantee AT&T will like it.

can I use my rooted verizon g2 on tmobile and get 4g data?

can I use my rooted verizon g2 on tmobile and get 4g data by changing the apns?
Thanks
Is there anyway someone might be able to lend me a helping hand with this question?
Thanks so much
If you mean h+ speeds then yes. If you mean lte then no. Doesn't have to be SIM unlocked because all of their lte devices are. But it works better with a complete stock Rom.

[801] Can T-Mobile variant work with Straight Talk?

I am on the $30 plan from T-Mobile and is alright, however I am mowing to an area with Zero signal from T-Mobile.
Will switching to a Straight Talk Sim (At&T towers) and paying for their service give my phone their service?
Or would they 801 not work on those bands?
