Any Sprint phone should work in theory.
So I could get any sprint smartphone and root & rom it and install J.b. on it.and also I-wireless service should work to operate the phone such as talk, text & web correct?

Call I-wireless and see. Just say you wanna bring on your own phone and see what phones you can put on their service.
iwireless partners with T-Mobile, not Sprint. iwireless is a GSM carrier, so DO NOT put a Sprint load on an iwireless phone. I too am waiting/looking for a 4.1 update on my iwireless Galaxy Nexus, which brought me here.

Sprint may be partners, but that doesn't mean sprint branded phones will work on iwireless. T-mobile may work, because they are affiliates. (T-mobile owns iWireless)
You could always shop around for an unlocked GSM phone. By buying an unlocked/international phone you are able to jump to any carrier with a GSM network and sim card setup. Even though the phone may cost more, it is well worth it. (it also retains its value much better for resale) I am using a international factory unlocked Galaxy SIII on iWireless with no problems.
I recently dropped AT&T to go with iwireless pay-in-advance, went from $102 a month for 450 minutes, unlm messaging, 3gb data to $57 for unlimited everything. Now, hopefully iwireless jumps on getting their hspa+ (3G/3.5G) towers up so I can fully enjoy the service instead of having edge all the time.
So if you were still looking I would check ebay if you want brand new sealed in box, and another site called swappa for used phones. I've personally used swappa, it is a buy/sell/trade for used android phones. A few friends also used swappa and I would recommend the site to anyone. If I'm not mistaken they also have something to do with the CyanogenMod community. HERE is a link.
Let me set the record straight.
i wireless is a T-Mobile affiliate.
HOWEVER,
i-wireless is another affiliate, but of Sprint.
They are two different companies.

Ditto. They can cut you off if you go over a certain amount (most people say around 2-3GB a month), but so far I've used around that amount and been good. I know some people who have gone way over (5GB) and been fine too. If you use them, don't fill in the proxy fields in the APN, just the MMS proxy stuff. If you stream constantly, this service is not for you. However for anything else it's great. And you get real AT&T speeds (I've personally gotten up to 5 Mbps in some areas).

Yup ive used 2gb and been fine, and have also heard of people going over 5gb and been fine. But id say 2gb would be the safe zone, which is probably plenty for most. Just use wifi whenever you can
my sim will be coming soon and since im gonna be using a pre 2 i dont think data limits are anything to worry about. i just want stable reliable signal where I can text and get calls reliably from a certain area sprint doesnt cut it but ATT does. my question is i am a part time promotor for clubs so i send out a crap load of texts (on sprint i saw my amount and it was around 22000 lol)
if i decide to make this my main phone i will be consuming that much.....phone calls arent an issue i mainly talk only to my gf for long periods of time at night lol
will i be kicked off for this usage?
Hey if I only wanted 5-10 of data a month with no minutes or texts is that possible?and if it is how much would I be looking at for just 5 Gb of 4G data a month.I have a unlocked HTC sensation 4G a t-mobile smartphone.so do I order a sim card from straight talk?how much is a sim card?can I call and order a sim card and activate the sim for just monthly data?I would appreciate it if someone would please explain my qwestions. Texts don't really use data so you would be fine. Data use would be like Pandora.

You could get your cellphone activated on Clearwireless if it's available in your area. It works on HTC EVO, and I think it would on sensation... Just google "activate htc evo on clearwireless" to get on the right path... Good luck!

The Evo is a cdma device and the Sensation is a gsm device. They are not compatible. Clearwireless is a cdma provider (mvno).

Yes, it does. GSM SIMs and (for example) the SIMs used by Verizon (I don't, know if, Sprint has switched to a SIM based system for their up and coming LTE network) would not be compatible. You CANNOT USE A device like the Sensation on a CDMA network, period.

Sprint uses "integrated SIMs" for their LTE phones, which basically means they still use the same MEID/ESN system. Identical to the old 3G/WiMax system. And yes, you're correct. You can't use a GSM phone on a CDMA network period. You can, however take a hybrid GSM/CDMA phone (like a Droid 2 Global) and get it to work on GSM networks by hacking the radio not to ignore domestic networks like AT&T and T-Mobile.
Does anyone know what I can do with an old Evo in terms of prepaid stuff? It's got a clean ESN, and I've got a relative on a shoestring budget that would love something like this, but they can't afford contract prices.
Thanks.
Google is your friend.
It can be flashed to any company using same towers. Boost, virgin, etc.
I'm on boost myself.

This is incorrect on multiple levels.
Firstly, straight talk is a GSM carrier, which provides MVNO service for At&t, as well as t-mobile. The evo is a CDMA phone, which is compatible with that network.
The service that you're thinking of would be page plus, which provides verizon service in a mvno environment. The problem is that to use page plus, one must have a valid verizon ESN, which the evo does not have.
The evo must be used on a sprint mnvo, such as ting, or cricket. Virgin mobile will *not* work with the evo, as they require specific ESN numbers outside of the sprint general database.
It is possible to put an evo on page plus, straight talk, boost, and a few others. Straight Talk has gsm phones as well as cdma phones last time I checked. I haven't personally flashed an EVO to page plus but I've seen them. I have an EVO currently on boost, almost anything is possible if you put your mind to it! I

I think Page Plus is probably the best route. I had a Droid X on it. I have flashed an Evo Shift before to page plus. I don't think 3G worked but i use WIFI mostly anyways. I then flashed it to a Mexican company Iusacell and gave it to a friend that lives down there. Never got the 3G to work though it was a tough phone to flash.
I've know a few people with EVO's on Boost Mobile. They're really happy with it.

Are you implying that you currently have a phone on a postpaid plan, and you want to use it on a prepaid plan? What are you thinking of flashing?
well ill put it this way. my friend wants a nice phone on prepaid. doesn't care about cost. he has 2 phones now. one is on straight talk other is on T-Mobile..he wants a nice phone I was curious if anyone has done it and if anyone had any suggestions on what phone to use with what prepaid. like Sprint Verizon or AT&T iphone 4/5 on tmobile or straight talk. or a Sprint galaxy s3...he'll use just about any new-ish phone.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
I guess the 1st decision is what service he wants to go with. Phones are either CDMA or GSM, and not both, with few exceptions (like the new iPhones). So, if he gets a Verizon phone, he can't use it on T-Mobile or AT&T prepaid, and vice versa.
Since cost of the device is no issue, he just has to buy one that's factory unlocked (a.k.a., SIM unlocked).
apologies, I personally have an s3 through Sprint which Ive rooted along with numerous other phones just never did anything of this nature. so I should have him buy a phone that takes a SIM card we'll say and use either straight talk SIM card or tmobile? as an example.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
where would be the best place to buy factory unlocked phones? ebay? and obviously the easiest would be to go the SIM card route
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
If the phone he has/gets is unlocked, he should have no problem swapping the SIM cards, and using the phone on either provider. If you want help mulling over specifics of what particular phone to buy, post it here. You'll get shut down if you start a thread asking what phone to buy.

"Best" is subjective. Some would say to buy it from the manufacturer, as then you would have warranty, return policy, & everything.
well I talked to him and he says he'd prefer to go the galaxy s2 or 3 route. would it be cheaper to buy a unlocked GSM s2? im just confused about the SIM ordeal and what carrier to go with, with what phone. I've tried changing MEID before on a epic to use it on straight talk, which it was CDMA but I couldn't get the MEID to write properly so that was a fail.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
Yeah, you don't have to deal with that stuff with GSM phones. That whole "flashing to another provider" thing is a CDMA issue. Basically, any unlocked GSM phone will work, with any GSM provider.
Another thing to consider, though, is 4G data speeds. AT&T (and their MVNOs) and T-Mobile (and their MVNOs) use different frequencies for the highest speed cellular data connections. For example, if you buy an AT&T phone and then unlock it, you won't get 4G data speed on Simple Mobile, since Simple Mobile is a T-Mobile reseller. Therefore, even when you've finally decided which phone to buy, you still need to decide which bands you want it to have, based primarily on which service provider you plaln to go with. One exception to this is the Galaxy Nexus HSPA+, which is pentaband, and can be used just about anywhere, at full speed.
nice. any suggestions for iphone? My apologies. just seems those appear to be the cheapest route via ebay for a gsm unlocked one.

I assume you live in Richmond VA. You probably have a choice between T-Mobile or AT&T 3G/4G. T-Mobile is far better than AT&T and the Monthly Prepaid stuff from T-Mobile isn't bad. I like the $30 plan personally.

There's two 30$ plans (the one with 100min, unl texts and 5GB data and a 1500 min/texts and a small amount of data (30MB?? I forget))
You should be specific. The 5GB data one is only available online or at Wal-Mart.
The other one is available in T-Mobile stores.

It depends. Here in Kansas it's Sprint. In Iowa it's T-Mobile. You'd have to look at the phones they sell in your area to get an idea.
i-wireless is a Kroger Sprint company.
iWireless/i wireless is a T-Mobile affiliated company.
i-wireless uses CDMA technology.
iWireless uses GSM technology.
If you want to use iWireless in the western part of the US, you would be roaming on T-Mobile with no charge because you're outside of the iWireless main service area which is all of Iowa and parts of nearby states.
You could not use your T-Mobile Galaxy S4 on i-wireless, but you could on iWireless.
See I have a cheap I-wireless phone that cdma and I dont use the phone but I get free time so I have 1500 minutes plus $300.00 cash credit on it I was just trying to think of a way to use up all that money in time.
