Warning: photo loss on disabling Google+ - General Paranoid Android Discussion

I'm not sure how widely this may affect people but given that I'm running the PA 4.0 beta 2 on a Nexus 5, I thought I'd start here.
Essentially it's fairly easy to unrecoverably lose photos (one by one) using the PA GApps photosphere camera if you have Google+ disabled.
I had disabled it from the Settings/Apps screen as I felt I had no real use for it. I'd left all the other Google stuff working.
No obvious side effects until I was taking photos today (of my newborn son!)
On the camera app, when reviewing a photo, the top left icon that looks like a multicoloured windmill (with a backward arrow) is apparently supposed to take you to Google's Photos app. This appears to be part of the Google+ apk. I used it as I thought it would get me back to taking more pictures. Instead, with G+ disabled, it appears to permanently delete the photo you're currently looking at (at least I've not found where the photo goes!)
With G+ re-enabled it works to take you to the photo app as intended.
So looks like the G+ tendrils have found me after all; luckily I only lost a few irreplacable photos (but I'll take more!). But consider this a warning to be very careful if you disable G+ yourself.

This is also happening on CM11.
Try to completely uninstall the google+ app.

Q: Blurry contact picture when someone rings

I love my omnia 7 but I have noticed if someone rings me and I have their picture on my phone it shows up blurry on the ringing screen
I used a picture this evening which was stored on my phone on someones contact (took with camera) and it still shows blurry
anyone any idea's have to solve this ?? I know its only cosmetic but its damn annoying
i have this problem too. my contacts have pictures from windows live and facebook account and they allways show up blurry, when taking a call.
Are you sure the facebook photos show up blurry too? The main problem here is because of Gmail, which uses a pathetic resolution for the contacts (96x96?) and therefore, when you have GMail sync enabled, all the photos are replaced with lousy low-res versions, immaterial of whether you uploaded a hi-res version in the first place.
This has been discussed on several threads in GMail support, *WITHOUT* a solution:
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/gmail/thread?tid=166e27ae27e71c7a&hl=en
Are you sure your WL and FB contacts are not showing their GMail pics? (I think WP7 defaults to facebook when available).
If GMail is not your problem, you might want to just do some removal/addition of the FB/WL accounts to see if it by chance fixes the problem.
i don't use gmail, so the issue is caused by something else.
I have noticed that images from facebook are displayed at decent (sharp) quality but if I allocate my own custom photos from the phone or taken by the phone camera, they appear blurry if a Google Contacts account is used.
If you use the Windows Live option, the image appears a lot nicer. In fact, I only did this test after reading this post and i'm going to deviate from using Google Contact and instead move them to Windows Live! Pictures are very nice.
Also, this affects the tiles if you pin the contact to the home screen.

I previously had a LG Optimus 7 and this issue was there too--so unlike the Wiki states, this doesn't look to be an Omnia 7-only problem.
Anyway, I'll consider moving my contacts to Windows Live and see if that makes a difference.
EDIT: I recently updated to Mango--the pictures were still blurry. I re-added the contact pictures from photo albums (still saving them as Google contacts) and now the pictures are sharp! So it looks the this problem was fixed in Mango?

I have seen that even if you choose a photo you shot from your Omnia, because of the google sync, it gets downscaled. I have heard that people have succeeded by disabling the photo sync on google (don't recall how), but it did not work for me.
BTW, have you updated to Mango beta or the RTM? And, is it worth the effort (assuming it's not too easy to apply the official update after this upgrade).
Thanks!

Yes you're totally right, Google Sync downscaled it. Damn.
I'm not sure the difference between the Mango beta and the RTM (I bought my Omnia unlocked and unbranded). I followed Duck's instructions in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1203948
Personally, I didn't have to do the firmware flash so it was very painless. In fact, it was no harder than running "update.bat" then updating the phone threw Zune. Considering almost no effort it's definitely worth it. Mango is faster, IE9 is much better, some of the additional features are nice (some multitasking, alphabet app-menu, etc).
I'd say, if you don't need to flash the firmware it's totally worth it (only took me 10 minutes). If you have to flash, I might reconsider (I have a lot of game saves, etc. that would be annoying to lose).

Gallery crop and draw

Coming from a Samsung s5 I'm used to being able from the photo gallery to crop and draw on photos. Now with the standard photos app I don't see these functions. Am I missing something, or do I now need another app? Recommendations?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
I don't draw on my pics, but have seen a few that allow this....Just search for gallery and read the features. I've tried about 25 different ones to find one I like and I always come back to QuickPic . Has several great editing tools......But I always have a 2nd (besides Google Photo's) with more editing options. This 2nd one changes all the time and I keep hoping I'll find an "all-in-one" gallery that will let me only keep one. Many people will recommend the CM gallery, I really like it but it has no option to "hide" a folder. So if you have 300 albums, each in their own folder, you can' t automatically hide them - You have to add some sort of "no media" tag to each folder (someone correct me if I'm wrong).
Another one I like, is a new one that I thing has potential.... It's called: A+ Gallery Photos & Videos (by AtomicADD Team)
Another couple I liked were:
FOTO Gallery (by LADYBUG)
Gallery (by Flayvr Media, Ltd.)
Piktures was another one I used for a while, you might check it out too.
You can always delete them if you don't like them.
Thanks, I was hoping for a few suggestions rather than the try a whole bunch to see approach. I checked the play store and hoped to whittle it down to a few contenders.

The Motorola gallery let's you draw and crop on photos, there's another thread with the apk in themes and app.
Trying the Motorola gallery, looks like what I want. Thanks Jamespat!

S8 Gallery app - Story Mode

So, I have just upgraded myself from G3 to this Beast phone (love it)
Native Galaxy Gallery App there is a Story Mode/ selection that puts together all the pictures you have then in a given day or location and adds background music & some effects but, in doing so it cuts the pictures so you end up with half the face or picture to see.
Are there any settings the I need to change to make the pictures show in full or is there any fix for this.
I tried searching the forums but found nothing. In case I was wrong please direct me to the correct post
I'm finding that I have the same results and can't find any settings to change the way it seems to zoom in on each photo. Really nice idea but poor execution...

No one else seems to have this issue or care for this feature
or they are too busy rooting/ unlocking the SD version of the phone
Can't say about others, but in my case: 1. easy enough to do it manually just the way I want it 2. it almost never works properly, besides cutting off the frame. Case in point, my phone created album called "at the beach", after we went to the beach. Well, most of the pictures in this album are not from anywhere near the beach and since I have location embedded in every picture and phone already correctly identified I was at the beach including particular field, not sure why it added pictures taken at home and many other locations. Bottom line: useless function personally I don't care about.

All OP5 camera photos are green after wipe and root

So I posted this over on Reddit, but then realised that here is probably a better place for more tech users.
I needed to root my OP5 and went through the process.
Now after I've got everything up and running, all my apps installed, and Backups restored - I've noticed something very bad and annoying.
If I use the stock app to take a photo it will take the picture and show it in the gallery preview. But as soon as I try to view that photo using the gallery preview shortcut, or the gallery app, the photo instantly turns completely green.
All other apps take photos fine.
Using stock app Photos work on:
Depth Mode
Normal Mode with HDR Active
Photos are fully green with:
HDR Off
HDR Auto
HQ Mode
Anyone else experienced this?
I really dont want to have to wipe again because it takes over an hour to set up all my accounts and 2 factor auth stuffs...
Just after I wrote this someone on reddit said they had something similar with OP3 - They had to re-flash because of a corrupted build.prop. I rooted to change a bunch of stuff, including editing the build.prop.
I did a little digging and found that if you change the permissions of build.prop then it works.
Changed them to:
Owner - read, write, execute
Group - read
Other - read
Will leave this thread as a reference to others in case anyone else comes across this issue.

Upside down pictures

I have a weird experience with the stock camera that I have discovered recently. I'm running official stock ROM - just everything right out of the box. I was backing up some photos to my PC when I noticed that some of the pictures were upside down, yet when I viewed them in Google Photos, they are in their proper orientation.
I tried experimenting last night. I tried taking a selfie with my right hand. The photo shows up correctly in Google Photos, social media share, thumbnails in Explorer (Speed Software non rooted version of Root Explorer), and when transferred to PC.
I tried with my left hand, and I was able to replicate the issue. I thought it was just an auto-rotate tinkering. I always auto-rotate enabled on my phone. I tried enabling and disabling it. The stock camera seems to auto-rotate on its own regardless of whether the general option is toggled or not as some of the GUI of the stock camera rotates on its proper orientation whether I hold the phone with my right or left hand.
My wife have a Mi A2 Lite, and we tried replicating the issue. Her camera works fine as whether she's holding the phone with her left or right hand, the actual photo isn't upside down.
I tried installing Open Camera, and the results is pretty much the same with Mi A2 Lite so it is definitely in the stock Mi A1 camera app.
It's kinda a minor thing since backed up photos in Google Photos and shared images in social media are in their proper orientation. It's just kinda mildly annoying that the actual photos, when backing them up in PC, are upside down.
PS:
I just want to know if somebody else has noticed this. Thanks! Probably, I'm gonna play around with Open Camera for a while.
Nop, never heard lf this issue.
Phone must be made in strange things upside down world??

It's really easy to miss because apps within the phone or uploading them to social media like IG show the correct orientation, but when you copy the file to your computer, shots taken with left hand or if you position your phone horizontally where the power and volume rockers are facing down and the USB port is facing left.
This only happens with the stock camera app. I can't replicate it with Open Camera.
I'll try to get some screenshots later.

I know what you mean, the same happens for me with GCAM PIXEL 2 MOD on RR ROM final build with Moun Kernel 6.2 .
Not really a bug for me.

I just find it weird and mildly annoying. I can easily rotate photos once they are copied in my PC though. Probably, I'll try Open Camera for now.
