[Q] Peculiar problem with S4 battery - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
My GT-I9500 is pretty new (bought around 4 months ago). For a few days I am facing problem with my battery. When battery is around 60% my phone reboots and then show 0% batter. Charging it a minute restores batter life to 60%. Here is the sequence of incidents after which I am facing my problem (don't know whether any of them is relevant).
1. I accidentally (playing games) discharged my battery to 0% for couple of times recently.
2. My problem started after I installed batter doctor to improve battery life ( don't know whether its the cause.). Not, that I had any complaint with previous battery life
3. Uninstalled battery doctor and did a full charge... problem persists
4. Reinstalling battery doctor and did a full charge... problem persists
5. Did a h/w reset.... problem persists
6. updated stock firmware through odin... problem persists
Any ideas why this is happening?
Note, that before step 6 my device was rooted so warranty is void.
Thanks in advance.

Replace ur battery for one new :highfive:
*EDIT: Your battery dont need "improve" nothing and less if was new (~4 months). The unique u did is **** it

Ok, I fu....d my battery. What I fail to understand is how?
The only control user have over a battery is charge/discharge cycle and whatever he/she does can't modify chemical composition of the battery that much to cause the symptom I am having.

This is a common and well known fault with a batch of batteries.
Mainly the batteries where the serial number starts BD. Is your battery swollen?
Take it back to where you bought it and ask for replacement.
P.S You didn't break your battery at all, it's a manufacturing defect.

Hi Obagleyfreer, thanks.
My battery serial number starts with BD. Will you please share link where this is mentioned. I want to be prepared so that their service center can't bull**** me.
Thanks agian.

No worries mate.
Just Google search "Galaxy S4 faulty battery" and you'll find lots of pages about it.
Samsung are aware and have acknowledged the issue so you shouldn't have a problem.
I'm in NZ, the same happened to my gf phone and within 2 days she had a replacement battery direct from Samsung NZ.

Severe battery drain problem

Severe battery drain problem happening to my Galaxy 3 in recent days whatever ROM or kernel I use.
Still under warranty for 6 months +. So I given to Service Centre.
At first they just formatted and reloaded with DDJP2.
Then I argued to provide a new battery and convinced from my side that the battery is the culprit.
And wow, they convinced and promised me to give a new battery in next week as they are out of stock now.
But my doubt is...
The problem is as follows:
The cell fully charges, indicated that the battery is fully charged.
When I unplug the charger, the battery indicator comes immediately to zero from 100 within 2 minutes with minimal phone or data usage. And it automatically switches off.
If I switch it on again even without charging, it again shows 100% charge.
So the question is, Is it the damaged battery the culprit is? Or some motherboard problem or what?
I am unable to judge the problem!!!
As it is proved that the service centre people are real dumb Is it time to switching to newly announced Symbian or only Galaxy 3 sucks!!!
Had similar problem with my Nokia which made me switch to Galaxy 3 few months back
When i had that kinda problem with Nokia the battery was sort of swelled and was deformed here and there. So i was sure my battery's dead.
If your battery looks good as new then the problem is with the chip.
Same prob I m having.. U need to do sum cycles to get Ur battery wrkin fine as said by rob_gangte ..

Drain the battery completely. If it switches off by itself, try to switch on and repeat this until it is completely drained. Switch off ur mobile. Wipe battery stats in cwm. Do not switch on and charge it for atleast 2hrs. Then switch on and repeat this for few cycles
This has been happening to ur phone since u bought it or after previous flashing...
If after some recent flashing then u hav ur answer (revert back to eclair then reflash) !!!

Battery flat over night/ phone shut down with strange battery usage (screens iside)

I have samsung galaxy s2 just over a month or so and i have big problems, due to battery. I know this is common issue on this device.
Until now i try to recalibrate battery like that, no hard reset. The phone it;s new and it had ICS 4.04 installed on the first place.
1) drain all of your battery untill phone shuts down
2) turn on and drain battery until phone shuts down ( repeat until you are unable to turn the phone on- this step is very important because we need to drain the battery competely)
3) take the battery out and wait 5 seconds or so and put it back in
4) Charge the battery while the phone is off
5) when the charge is 100%, take the charger off then charge again to get 100% again
6) turn on your phone and enjoy your new battery
Once i try to take the battery out after charge, and wait over 2 minutes. I know this is a common issue of s2, but i have some screens, maby someone had similar problem.
----------
-------------
Next, i'll try Battery Calibration (can't post the link, new user) tool from the market / wait for Jelly Bean official update. Then hard reset. Next step: service.

The batteries in these phones can't be calibrated per se. Just use it normally for a bit. The peaks and troughs in your battery graph are because you're clearing the fuel gauge data. Mine would drop from the 73% I'm on now, to about 14% if I cleared the fuel gauge chip data, until it relearnt its settings. Just charge normally and use it for a few days, it will sort itself out.
If not, new battery.

Im having the same problem. Tried swapping batteries with another S2, recalibrating the battery and even installed another rom, same problem persists. The phone will auto switch off after a few hours of not using (overnight especially), and batter will drain like mad when it happens. Brought the phone back to samsung for repair now.
Same here...

I'm currently having the same (really annoying) problem. My international GS2 is less than a month old and uses the latest official firmware on ICS. It happens almost daily -- or should I say nightly? The phone has at least 60-70% of battery left by the time a go to sleep. When I wake up in the morning, it's completely depleted. My stats look exactly as in the screen-shots in the first post. I'm always charging/using it "normally" but it hasn't sorted itself out.
I don't really know how to solve this and it's frustrating. The Internet has mixed "feelings" about the solution(s)... However, same as with my battery issue, I'm looking for something more stable and reliable.
Am I missing something? Does anyone know the exact cause and how to fix it?
Hello, I took the phone to a local service (pointed by Samsung from my country) and they replaced my motherboard and another pice of hardware....something in the recharging sistem, i dont know details. I think there is a "lot' of bad motherboards... people form the service call it a generic name.
In conclusion, the problem was the motherboard, not battery. I have recovered the device from service one day ago, if i'll experience any problems... i'll get back with details.
Cheers

[Q] Verify "swollen" battery

So I have been having problems with my S4 suddenly shutting down when the battery drops to 70-80 percent. I wiped /data, reflashed stock (MH8) and even flashed the .pit file but nothing has helped. Rebooting after the phone has shut itself down, I'm lucky to get to the PIN-screen before it turns off again (sudden black screen, no regular shut down sequence). The only remedy is recharging.
I noticed that my battery appears swollen, but i figured it might be NFC-circuitry or something. Would be very grateful is someone could take a look at their battery and compare with the attached image (sorry for the iphone ruler). Would be a lot nicer to try with a new battery instead of sending it away for a motherboard replacement or something. Thanks.
That definitively doesn't look normal. :s
My battery is swollen as well. Shutting down frequently especially when using 3g and browsing.
It's not normal. My old Galaxy S 4G's battery started draining really fast and shutting down whenever I had around 50-60%. The battery was swollen. You should buy another S4 battery.

I wouldn't be charging that or using it either. There's a good chance it may explode if charged or used...
Unfortunately for you batteries aren't normally covered under warranty. You might need to bite the bullet and either buy another Samsung branded battery or an OEM one off ebay.
I had the same issue, changed battery and its working again.
There's also a thread in the general section. Seems to happen sometimes...

Weird though, I don't usually overcharge och trickle charge my battery. My faulty one had a serial number beginning with BD, perhaps it was a bad batch.

The exact same problem has started for me too literally a few days ago. I reflashed and formatted everything because I presumed the reboots were a software issue. I only noticed today that my battery is a little swollen but not as much as on some of the pictures I've seen.
Has anyone taken the battery back to a shop? How was it handled? My phone is only 3 months old but I have it rooted so I need to know whether they will want the whole phone or just replace the battery in case I need to revert to full stock firmware.
Battery serial number also starts with BD

I ended up buying a new battery.
If it is swollen just get a new one, means that it is pretty much gone

Hi! I am from Pakistan and have this same battery code B600BE. It reads "Cell Made in Japan, Assembled in China". I am only posting this with an intention to help someone:
I bought my S4 (i9500) almost 4.5 months back. I am a hardcore smartphone user and do cpu intensive tasks on my phone like crazy. My battery isn't swollen at all, exactly like I got it. Sometimes, my phone heats up a lot (eg playing CoC) and I charge and play at the same time without caring about battery and cpu temp. And so far my battery life is decent. Almost exactly like when I got it new. Don't experience any reboots or shutdowns etc
So this means that not all B600BE are faulty batteries. I guess ? Will update my post if I find more information about the "faulty battery batch" manafactured (as some xda members claim).

On my battery i cannot see where the cell is made,
It just says
MADE IN CHINA / FABRIQUE EN CHINA
ENSAMBLADO EN CHINA / MONTADO NA CHINA.
Like this http://www.technobuffalo.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Samsung-Galaxy-S4-Battery.jpg
But then China ipv Korea
Mine is made in China, product code B600BE, S/N: BD1D512BS/2-B. It got swollen after only 2 months. Luckily they replace swollen S4 batteries here in the Philippines and in severe cases where the battery got so swollen it broke the motherboard or screen they replace those parts too. It happens quite a lot here and the folks at Samsung Care admit it's a factory defect on a batch of batteries.
My battery is also swollen. The serial number starts with BD. It is not as much as the OP but still is. I will try to replace it using warranty.
When the battery is swollen lije that, you'd better stop using it.

[SOLVED] S4 I9500 cyclic reboots and dead battery - strange behaviour

Hi,
I have a Galaxy S4 I9500 octa core version, latest official firmware available installed (MD5) and everything was fine until a week ago. The issue is like this: only when utilizing it even for few minutes only (browsing the internet, watching Youtube, sending messages, etc.) the phone dies completely and reboots. After reboot battery shows 0% (although it was almost full) and reboots again and again until it eventually dies completely. If I wait 20-30 minutes and restart the phone, everything is fine. Or if I put the charger and charge it for few minutes it comes back to life. This is a very random behavior but it happens now every day. The phone is not hot or heavily used and it happens when either connected to wifi or 3G. Sometimes, wifi settings are lost!
Before trying to master reset the phone, is any of you having similar issues (I read that there is a similar behavior for some of the users when using the camera)? Is this related to the battery?
Thanks,
Mugur

You can see this strange battery graph
And this is even more obvious
usually when phone exceeds the limit SOC highest temperature, it turns off or reboot. but you say that it is not geeting hot.
so you should think about battery, try with another one.

Swollen battery
I am now few hours on the new battery and everything is fine. I am wondering why my battery swollen. Is it because I am charging the phone the whole night? You sure its not just bad batteries? I didnt even try to buy a Samsung battery when I recently replaced mine... too many junk knockoffs/used/refurbs. I went with after market. Your issue sounds like a lot of the bad battery stories I read about though. I always charge a new battery with the phone off, and then run down to 1% or 2%. I never use fast charge either

Where are you getting your batteries, and how are you charging it when you get it? "New to you" batteries doesnt necessarily mean "brand new", and can still be junk
