Moto G Google Play Edition hands-on vs Motorola’s G
When we heard about the Moto G being offered as a Google Play Edition handset, we immediately scratched our heads in wonder. Why would Google offer a device from their own store with the exact same price as the original device when the software is essentially the same? The answer lies in Google's unique plan, the one where they hand-pick the most appealing devices in the market and sell them themselves - all other matters pale when shown in the face of this Google Play Edition long-term goal.
What you've got here is a device that's essentially the same as what we saw in our original Moto G Review. There we found this 720p 4.5-inch display atop a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor working with great everyday action. It takes photos well, it works with essentially every app you could possibly want to work with, and it's got a replaceable back cover for fashion-friendly change-outs.
Here with the Moto G Google Play Edition, the differences are software-deep. There aren't any Motorola apps right out of the box - this includes Moto Assist (read a bit more about this in our original Moto G hands-on), Motorola Migrate, and Motorola's "Help" app. The camera is Google's standard camera now, instead of Motorola's, giving you a few different abilities as well.

You won't be working with Google's Photosphere shooter in this machine's camera because the Moto G doesn't have the gyroscope needed to run such a feature. You'll be able to take photos with this camera's connection to your volume button, but it's not quite so easy to zoom - if you're into that sort of thing.

I think it's a great idea. Our standard Moto G will get love a little longer thanks to the GPE. Stupid for who?

I installed the stock Kit Kat Camera in my Moto G standard, but the app does not have the HDR option
In Moto G Play Edition the stock camera has HDR?

The GPE Moto G is being sold in the US and is most likely the US (AWS) version.
Nobody mentions, or even cares, about FM radio anymore, huh ?

Doesn't mean it will work. HTC One FM app doesn't work on Htc One GPE.
Google has a habit of at least disabling in software (HTC One, Nexus One), if not hardware (the rest).
They just omit a shared library or framework file or two.
I'd bet software disabling of FM is part of the GPE contract requirements.
I'd be interested to see how much free space there is in the GPE version. With less bloatware and no moto services they might have reduced the size of the /system partition, giving us some extra space for user data,
This would be particularly welcome on the 8GB version.
Amazon doesnt get the GPE editions, correct?
^ this would be interesting
+
NO GEL by default.
But I would definetly install the firmware from GPE edition on my Moto G

Hi, so i am concerned of the Voice Activation of the Snapdragon 800 .I just can't find people online talk about it. So can anybody help me? Thanks so much:laugh:
Is there any Voice Activation built into the G2??
It works on mine just like it did on my ole gnex .. I don't use it much though

I didn't even know...
How does one activate it?
And, more importantly, how does one shut it off?
?? That would be something I have never heard off before for g2.

Well what do you know there is voice activation on the G2 already!
I just tried to use "Voice Mate" and it's not responsive at all...
Is it possible to replace it with Google Now or the Moto X's voice activation?

I am actually interested in the "Always On" voice activation ala the Moto x so the phone can be spoken to while asleep and then taps into Googles voice commands. This was demoed by the Snapdragon folks using Hello Snapdragon command I believe

Played with it a bit and couldn't find a way to make it useful. It also doesn't work with nova home screen but works well on lock screen. So off it goes for now.

It only works on the lock screen, which really isnt voice activation like motoX or droids, I might as well swipe up and open google now and just ask google. Id want it to work with the phone/screen off
Pretty sure that the snapdragon 800 has a voice processor physically built in similar to the moto x that can listen for keywords even while in standby. I just think its not being fully utilized by lg in the same way as motorola. It might be possible for apps in the future to configure it. Please correct me if I'm wrong

That's correct. It's physically built into the chip. The manufacturers just have to access it. Works on standby so that it's always listening even when on standby and the processor is idle.

That's because lg didn't tale advantage of the feature at all. What you all are talking about with voice mate is the use thing the s4 does with svoice. What the s800 has is the ability to be in always listen mode like the motoX. Except neither Samsung (with the note 3) nor lg coded for it. So the top feature of the s800 is t used by any OEM as of right now

I can't get it to launch via hotword. I don't remember if I turned it on or where to find the on/off. Anyone?
Ok, I found it. So, I guess you can't launch the voice search. You have to be in either voice mate or google now before it recognizes yhe hotwords. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I have a 32GB micro SD to store all my music on. I assume the Drive storage can't be used to store and play music through a normal music app. We're seeing a lot of absence of expandable storage recently. In every case it's the thing that stops me being remotely interested in a phone. Most of all with the HTC One, because it was the one thing that stopped me buying it. I feel like it's just so manufacturers can sell phones with different storage sizes = more moneys...

Same here. I was considering having the Moto G replace my Atrix, but the lack of expansion is really unattractive. Not only that, the 50GB of Drive is only for 2 years -- I'm expected to pay to keep that space later.

i have no problem with that - for music i also use cloud services like Spotify....
in Germany with some providers the spotify traffic does not even count as mobile data usage. So you still have your data volume for "normal use".
I for myself have no need for a huge internal storage....
about the cloud drive i'll save my Cloud Data to my NAS just before the 2 year's are near to end...
Just got my Moto G in the UK. SIIM-Free (no simlock) and the bootloader can be unlocked via: https://motorola-global-portal.cust...e/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a/action/auth

I think they missed a large customer base by not including a 32GB model into the lineup. Although with the lack of 4G, a large release in the US may not be the goal.
anybody wanting to develop custom rom on it?
There is another version with 16gb internal and Google wants you using Google Drive. Sdcard isn't safe, anyone can take it out and have access to your files, but isn't possible stol internal memory, as it is inside the device. Sdcard still slow down the device, as it is one more partition to be mounted at boot and keep mounted when device is powered on. It's better w/o sdcard

On the 8gb version it was about 4.x GB so it should be about 12GB on the 16GB Version. It supports also USB OTG so you could expand it with an MicroSD Card in a small reader if you really need more storage for media files.

Oh yeah, and there is also this little thing that I don't think anyone saw coming.
Replies to this thread should can involve thoughts, discussions and questions you guys may have about these new devices.
Enjoy!
images shamefully stolen from the Gizmodo articles.
My personal thoughts on each device:
The new X doesn't look great to me. That ring around the camera really turns me off and I don't know how I feel about the new leather backplate options.
As for the 360, I'll have to try one before I buy one. I've heard that it doesn't have the greatest battery life but other than that is supposed to be phenomenal.
The leather is an option which mean you don't have to select it if you don't like it. Unless you are part of Peta or your religion is against it, but I'm hoping it's some type of fake leather.
I'm a bit grumpy right now. I desperately want qi charging for the X and NFC for the G, it doesn't look like either will get them.
I rather get the N6 for Android L and qi charging in that case. But I can still sell my OnePlus to fund for the X.
I have no interest in wearing a watch whether analog or digital.

I was using a Galaxy 10.1 Tablet earlier today with the faux leather the S5 has and it was alright I guess. I just wasn't amazed.
Yes it's an option, but it's a premium option. I was saying that I don't know how I feel about it because who knows, it might be better than what's on the S5.
The leather comes from the Horween leather company, they work with bovine and equine hide. I personally don't like leather (real or faux) unless it servers a purpose, belt, shoes and coat. Back on topic though, I know what my neXt phone will be, I'd even go with the G over other flagships out there.

After seeing how big the new x is I'm glad I got the og moto x for my wife. That would be to big for her plus it just cost me .95 cents at best buy. I think they went to big to fast 4.7 to 5.2 inch a big difference. I think the main issue that will turn off current moto x owners will be the size. Also is there no qi charger? If so that is a huge mistake as well. As far as aesthetics I don't think it looks that bad. However I do think the og x looks better.

Reason you can't find anyone with it installed is because the Moto X Style hasn't been released yet. It is released in September.
No Radio????
<Record comes to a screeching halt> The Moto X Pure has no radio? Some people really need to have radios in their phones. I don't see this listed as an option anywhere for the Moto X Pure. That is a basic feature that all phones should have, especially one that costs as much as this one does. The Moto G 2014 (2nd generation) at $179 has a great FM radio. Can anyone confirm if the Moto X Pure (US verion) or Moto X Style has an FM radio or not?

Thank you for the information brother. I would have made the same mistake and have been as upset as your mother. You know, Motorola should start phones out with the basic features and the build upwards from there. Wouldn't that make sense...? (rhetorical question). If the $179 Moto G has a radio turner, the Moto X that costs MORE than twice that price should also have the same. The Moto X is a nice looking phone. I guess I'll have to look else where.

Too large Dispaly for me.
The other Specs aren´t worth it from my point of view.

I'll wait and see what the Moto X looks like.

Ugly?
The only thing that I hated is the screen resolution. Maybe because of fingerprint scanner...

This is exactly what I need. My 2013 Moto X showing its age. Hopefully soon.

So please ilucidate me about where it is..
Maybe they will use the top speaker to be regular speaker too, I would love to have back the dual front speakers.

That makes sense, there already has to be a speaker there for the phone anyway. It lets them cut costs also.
Here's hoping Lenovo made Motorola put near-stock Android on it, still.

That's what they've been doing for some time now, I don't see why they'd change it.

Haven't you seen the leaked video ? Moto G4 is fully running on stock android ! 6.0.1 ! It will be relesed in mid may !
I only like camera
I was thinking the finger should be on motorola's Back M it can better than moving finger ahead bottom like samsung and iphone
If 240 euros is the actual price, this phone will be a joke.Lenovo K5 plus has snapdragon 616(less overheating 615) and its 120 euros(150 in some countries).Anyway, its still not sure that it will use sd615.I read somewhere that it will have 2 versions-with sd430 and sd650(if thats true, then it will be right priced).
Also, its easy to see that the fingerprint is photoshopped.

The leaks seems to have some credibility because part of it was right, so I think it's likely we'd have a version with a fingerprint sensor. Although I wonder if it'd be for select countries like the Moto g turbo
