Motorola Moto G - Moto G General

Motorola Moto G launched. Seems very good hardware as always by Motorola with that price point and nice to see 4.3 out of the box. Will be launched in India also to give tough competition to Samsung/Sony/Micromax. But why no micro sd card slot??? what could be the logic?

Great phone! Want to buy one, but can't find anywhere 'in stock'? Tried searching for it in Canada, Brazil, Europe...

logic could be to force the customer to use google drive.
News told that you get a 2 Year 50GB google drive volume option for free when buying a new Moto G....
i can't post the link because i have not posted 10 times on xda but here you go:

I have a 32GB micro SD to store all my music on. I assume the Drive storage can't be used to store and play music through a normal music app. We're seeing a lot of absence of expandable storage recently. In every case it's the thing that stops me being remotely interested in a phone. Most of all with the HTC One, because it was the one thing that stopped me buying it. I feel like it's just so manufacturers can sell phones with different storage sizes = more moneys...
I apologise for a lil' rant.

Same here. I was considering having the Moto G replace my Atrix, but the lack of expansion is really unattractive. Not only that, the 50GB of Drive is only for 2 years -- I'm expected to pay to keep that space later.

i have no problem with that - for music i also use cloud services like Spotify....
in Germany with some providers the spotify traffic does not even count as mobile data usage. So you still have your data volume for "normal use".
I for myself have no need for a huge internal storage....
about the cloud drive i'll save my Cloud Data to my NAS just before the 2 year's are near to end...

Just got my Moto G in the UK. SIIM-Free (no simlock) and the bootloader can be unlocked via: https://motorola-global-portal.cust...e/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a/action/auth
Seems like a decent budget device, and a welcome upgrade to my aging Desire HD.

I think they missed a large customer base by not including a 32GB model into the lineup. Although with the lack of 4G, a large release in the US may not be the goal.

anybody wanting to develop custom rom on it?

There is another version with 16gb internal and Google wants you using Google Drive. Sdcard isn't safe, anyone can take it out and have access to your files, but isn't possible stol internal memory, as it is inside the device. Sdcard still slow down the device, as it is one more partition to be mounted at boot and keep mounted when device is powered on. It's better w/o sdcard

Hi t-bon,
is the Moto G photo quality better than the Htc One X camera picture quality (2012) ?
For me, the 5 MP of Moto G is the only deal breaker for me.

On the 8gb version it was about 4.x GB so it should be about 12GB on the 16GB Version. It supports also USB OTG so you could expand it with an MicroSD Card in a small reader if you really need more storage for media files.

I think that it is a good device, but it is SIM-Free for all the countries or is according to the operator?

i think it will depend on where you buy it : independent retailer = no simlock ; MNO/MVNO with time-limited contract = simlocked
i'm waiting it to be available here, surely my next device... It should take my Xperia X10mini (2010) place in my pocket and stay there for the next 3 years

MicroSD 64Gbyte

Since a lot of people think the DHD is going to get old and move to phones like the HOX, I just want to tell you that the new microSD cards with a capacity of 64Gbyte work on this great device! The HOX doesn't even have half of this capacity.
And...ICS is coming too! We still have some great devs here.
There is no need to buy a new phone.
If I haven't already bought the HOX, I would stay with my beloved DHD
Post 8 is card name and pic!
If this was helpful, please push THANKS.

IT DEFINITELY WORKS with 64gb.
Those saying it doesn't work didn't try it.

Does it have to be a specific 64 gb sd card or any will do?
I think any card is good...as far as is not a cheap clone and is an SDXC it will work (once formatted)
I too am happy to stick with my Desire HD. :good:
...or we could get another next gen phone THAT ALSO SUPPORTS MicroSD... ie SGS3... ^_~ ...not got one btw... but just stating an obvious logical answer besides sticking with our faithful DHDs
imho its a bad move for HTC to remove SDcard support... capacity for external storage for those type of media will only get bigger...
...opportunity to have 64GB (or more) on your smartphone just can't be easily dismissed. Especially if you carry around a ton of multimedia files as well as a chunk of your work and have a ton of pictures and a good part of your music collection! >_< lol!
ie my 1 and a half hour work commutes would be almost unbearable without my DHD with its 32GB card chock full of goodies to keep me from going insane in crappy uk public transport... @[email protected]
Yeah.
Personally, as far as function is concerned, there is little logical use in changing phones for me. I do in fact have a few more months before my contract expires and I'd like to eventually choose a very new phone that I can also support on my site without being a few months behind everyone else.
Having said that, unless another model has superior battery power consumption/time then I don't have a need for a different device. Like you, I commute throughout the day and therefore need the power to last me through the day, so I tend to limit YouTube, GPS or other things which happily eat away at the battery.
The idea of having loads stored on my device on a large SD Card is fine, but based on the above, I wouldn't use much of it.
The idea of losing the phone with so many eggs in one basket is not very appealing.
The idea of a bigger screen though like the Galaxy Note (which my barber has and showed me) is nice. I'd also consider future devices with removable rear covers, so that it's easy for companies like Mugen to make extended batteries for them. From experience that's real peace of mind.
The Microsoft Surface Tablet looks like a nice device which I could use for work maybe. If that became a primary toy, then maybe a phone would take a less important back seat for a while.

DHD + latest Lord's ICS build (8.2 as I type this) with radio 26.13.04.19 has a great battery life even with all the hammering it takes from using DicePlayer, PowerAmp, exchange Email, Dolphin, XDA Premium and even games like temple run & zenonia 4...
With the above usage... I get the trip to work, actual work usage (i have my desk phone on divert to my mobile) and the trip home... all in one nights charge... so I only need to put it on charge before I go to bed.
Hell, I've even forgot to charge it overnight and I was still able to crawl through most of the day... with charging it late afternoon, ready for the 2nd half of the movie I was watching on my trip to work! >_< hahaha!

I hear you there dude... I had my 1st DHD nicked through a burglary... =(
However, all I ever lost was my 1st 32GB class10 MicroSD as well as my nandroids...
All my files, movies, music and photos exists on multiple devices... so anything that was on my DHD is a copy from my other machines...
...pity I didn't do the same with my Nandroid... I keep them locally for the purpose of error recovery... would've kept copies of it off the device had I wanted to be safeguarded from potential theft... =_=
As it's looking now.. unless HTC starts building new units with SD support, I'll not be jumping on their new range quite just yet...
If November 2012 hits and they've not released a device that fits the bill for me... its looking a lot like I'll be going for SGS3... =_=

Even worse thats what you have left for apps and games, as by default these cannot be saved to the memory card. This phone should never have been released in 16gb with so little memory. 32gb should be the minimum.

still wondering why this is a surprise to people. this is getting ridiculous.
I'm probably not even going to get it because of this stupid decision to only have a 16GB version. I don't know what the hell I'm going to do now, my X2 is all but useless and I need to buy a phone off contract to keep my unlimited data. I'm not spending $500+ on a phone from months and months ago, so I guess I have to wait until the next "big" thing comes out. Joy.
At first I was just mad that Verizon was taking a month longer than everyone else, but as usual, things can always be (and in this case, are) worse.
My international unlocked 9500 showed 9 available on the phone but when looking at in on the pc the number was actually in the upper 8s, don't recall what it was exactly. After I used Ti to install the 91 user apps I had backed up 2.4 gigs of that was consumed with 6.6 remaining. Since I always send my photos out to SD and this is my entire collection of apps I obviously have enough room as I use the phone. I cant speak for anyone else but it seems to me that most people with the exception of gamers who have a number of large games they want to keep on the phone at all times will be ok since I would be able to install somewhere toward 200 more typical apps without running out of space.
This is not to say I don't agree with the fact that 16 gigs is now becoming just enough and will not meet some users needs. If the storage were not expandable I would not be able to carry the payload of data I carry. This of course would be true even if it were 32 gigs because I now use my phone as my mp3 player as well and I have my entire library on it. I actually prefer having this out on removeable storage anyways though because I hung up my ipod years ago and just move my music on the card from phone to phone along with the pictures and some other data that I carry with me for work.
And no, my phone did not pick up LTE when I was down in Seattle, I do not have it in my area though and it is not even on AT&Ts roadmap yet, if I did I would have likely went with the snapdragon.

If you have the Octa version, several reviews of that version state the LTE function is on the chip, but disabled.
Yeah I read such myself and yet no one has confirmed it which at this point is surprising because there are now many out there and even if it should be so there is no surety that it will ever be working thanks to the smart gents here. Best IMO to leave the gate with the horse that has LTE aboard if you are in an LTE area and want to make use of it. This one for now doesn't have it and a rumor that may or may not be true isn't something I would hang my hat on.

UNDER 9GBs AVAILABLE on the S4
SAMSUNG'S TAKE ON LOW MEMORY IS B.S.
Samsung can go on the DEFENSIVE all they want and this DOES NOT SOLVE the problem; A 16gb phone with under 8gb available to the consumer.
Its not an excuse stating that a lot of the memory is taking up by all the bells and whistles which a lot of us will not use. What happens in the future when Samsung upgrades their software more space will be taken up. A lot of people suggest using a micro SD card. THIS IS ONLY GOOD FOR MEDIA FILES AND DOCUMENTS. NOT GAMES.
As a consumer we are paying for 16 GBs and getting roughly half.
I was a Samsung Customer and owned the S1/2/3 but I WILL NOT CONSIDER THE S4 or the NOTE 3 until Samsung comes out with 32GBs.
Until we all stand up and tell Samsung how we feel they will keep on pulling this crap on us.
Thanks

Samsung S4 will be featuring on BBC Watchdog over its memory claims. Details http://gavinsgadgets.wordpress.com/2...he-samsung-s4/
samsung has f*ck with this problem. it's too bad for them. they lost me as 1 customer out of 400+million customer cause of this storage.
my galaxy s 4 is the last galaxy after s2, note, s3, note 2 now s4 ( should be my last one )
please use foldermount for some big games. work great.
All they had to do was be more transparent. Also be honest about the apps and caches having to be installed to internal memory. Not everyone wants to root, and I cant because of certain apps that wont work if rooted.
I too have had the Note, S3, Note 2 and 4 other Samsung phones. This is the first time I am left a little disappointed.

Why I am getting rid of my Moto G for the RAZR I.

I have the RAZR i about a year ago, was really happy with it, but the app compatibility annoyed me too much, now fast forward to now, I own a Moto G, this is my first Motorola device since I gave up the RAZR i a year ago, and wow I have missed Motorola, every phone I have had from them has been so reliable.
BUT there are downsides and reasons why I am now going to switch BACK to the RAZR i from the MOTO G.
8 megapixel vs 5 megapixel: RAZR i wins here, not that I use my phone for photography, but the Moto G camera awful, everything looks painted!
Design: Well not saying the MOTO G design is bad, but let's face it, the RAZR i takes the crown without a doubt in design.
IPS vs AMOLED: even though the Moto G does have a higher pixel density, doesn't say that the RAZR i screen is awful, and I have always preferred AMOLED over IPS, but thats personal preference.
Micro SD: The Moto G doesn't have one!!
web browsing speed: I did a side by side comparison with my friends RAZR i, the RAZR i is a second quicker, despite been less powerful, speaks for itself.
These reasons mean a lot to me and that's why I am switching back. And maybe it will make you think twice about switching too.
I just hope apps have become more compatible since I last had it :/
Well, the moto G is fine, but not something to see as an upgrade for us razr i users, I'm waiting for the new asus line, I'm very happy with my intel processor, although what I wished for it didn't come true, and remember kids, always update to more, no to less-
edit: the moto g display is tn,not ips.

yeah, I agree, Moto G is equally fine as the razr i. I bought the Moto G for my mom so I had some time comparing the two phones and in the end both have their strengths and flaws. I would say, if you have neither of the two phones and want to switch to a medium spec phone then go for the G, but if you are using the i at the moment and think about going for the G, I would say it is not worth it.

Read on gsmarena it used a IPS. oh well. And i now own the RAZR i, it's brlliant, the design and camera are far superior. But it is a little more laggy.
Moto-G is great but as far as I can see there's no way for it to recognise a car dock. My Defy had a magnetic switch and the Razr i has NFC which works fine for that purpose and maybe for other stuff too (one day...).
I'm using more than 16Gb of my SD card, so space would be an issue.
Definitely not a Razr I replacement for me.
Moving back to ARM would be a positive I think - a couple of apps have recently stopped working after an update (NavFree included) and I think multi-core would help with lag. That said, I've just reduced the lag a lot by uninstalling the updates to the increasing number of Google apps I don't use and disabling them in the app manager so I'm not hassled to update them. I recommend doing that.
I can understand you, because I've already thought about switching to the moto g, too. But I really love my RAZR i and I won't switch so fast!

not meaning to Necro too much but this thread is interesting
being less powerful ... well when you oppose a quadcore versus a singlecore with HT ... yet the Razr i can be on the level of a Quadcore SOC thanks to the 2ghz of the Z2480

i have to say you got to give credit on a single core virtual dual core who do almost as fine as a Exynos 4412/Snapdragon 400... the Razr i still have the Oomph to kick 2013/2014 middle range phone with a quality build and overall good performance
(comming from a ex SGS III custom ROM 21-23K pts user ) so yes ... a Moto G is definitely not a "upgrade"
compatibility indeed the main letdown but yet none of the app i use are non working, bonus: PPSSPP/FPse are smoother than on my SGS III
and also the first phone i keep on stock ... Moto did a awesome job to not "bloat" too much the OS nearly a Nexus experience (feel the google print ... let's hope Lenovo will not let down the 4.4 for the XT890 )
i got my Ri for less than 120$ in a near new state, it still does more than 2 day on moderate use and a bit more than 1 day on heavy use (my kind of heavy use of course) the screen bear just one little scratch
and the rest of the phone is pristine. awesome material and build, good user experience, still actual in term of performances, the camera button is practical and near instant camera app launch from screen off is just awesome.
now who really need, 13mp, QHD UHD, 2gb RAM and more, and over 5" ... not me, that's for sure (and i had several size and model of smartphones/phablet)

+1. I went to the LG G3 Vigor and I saw the listing too, but looks like just a place holder too. Looks like the release may be soon...
Nice find! We must be close!
Just navigated to that page and I see it too. Awesome.

Was surfing around the ATT website and look at the listing I noticed on the right hand side. I clicked on it, and it went to just the page with the other Moto devices, but I thought it was interesting they have a listing there. The placeholder phone looks to be LG, hmmm.

Now the big question is will it have bloat and a locked bootloader?

Locked bootloader fixed with fastboot OEM lock... Is that really an issue for u? Lol
Bloat? On a nexus? Only the google apps I'm sure. The moto apps go on the moto x. What a weird question

AT&T bloat not moto.
I am new to android but I thought you needed the bootloader to be unlocked to remove carrier apps?

Guess we'll find out today if this is being announced. Let's hope it's not too expensive.

I have a hard time believing they'll be able to hit the nexus 5 price point but hopefully its under $500.

Nexus 6 32GB Black: 569 euro

Nexus 6 64GB Black: 649 euro
Nexus 6 64GB White: 649 euro
If this leak is accurate, Nexus smartphones will be available with 64GB of storage for the first time. Also, it’s good to see Google moving away from the 16GB option, which is inadequate for most users these days.

Makes me wonder why they stayed at 16 for the base tablet. I see an SD card very unlikely but with the recent rumors I think it's possible

Note 4 vs Droid Turbo

Since you can't write to SD now anyways...it doesn't matter to me. Anyone else ready to ditch Samsung? Good chance the boot loader on a new Motorola won't be totally locked down like our N4 is. It's a super Moto X basically.
I would miss the removable battery and S pen too much. Also I'm not crazy about the screen size of the turbo

I do like the screen size but that 3900mAH battery sounds good. I'd be set for days
I am looking to pickup either the Note 4 for Turbo for the wife. She doesn't need/want the S-Pen. She wants a phone that's fast, easy to use and provides great pics even in low lights. She doesn't know what she wants and is not a tech person at all lol. Which phone do you think will have the better camera?

I'll wait for reviews to make a final judgement, but there is a very low chance the turbos camera is better then the note 4. None of the moto devices are known for their camera. Even the new moto x is weak still in that department.

The bootlader on the droid turbo will be locked down tighter than fort Knox. So don't expect to be rooting or flashing Roms on it. I do like the form factor and the materials they use. I also like the specs they included. For me the only gripes I have is the camera, I heard it was OK.

Why would they lock the boatloader down? Unlike Samsung, they aren't pitching phones to corporate America. Motorola's been fairly open recently with the Moto X too. Their forum already has a system dump waiting for Devs...
Also...the UI Motorola has been going with is waaaay better than TW

Trust me, I'm coming from a original Moto X and ive had my fair share of droid brand devices. The bootloader is not unlocking any time soon. Maybe someone will find a root exploit but that's about it.

I think this one uses the same 21mp camera / sensor as the Z3

The only reason I could think of is to help promote the N6 as being the only unlocked and truly customizable stock phone on VZW. VZW could make them have it locked from factory as well. We will see on Thursday when it is released.
Picked this up from a recent link about the announcement of the turbo.

Shoot. Guess we'll see in 2 days. I have my N4 but nothing about it endears me like my old Note 2 did.

Exactly. The turbo is very enticing. If root doesn't happen in the next couple of days for the note 4. Then I will definitely get the turbo using my exchange period from Verizon.

The 3900 nah battery sounds nice but nothing beats being able to swap batteries. The spare battery charging system is like the greatest accessory ever

I suppose... I usually was OK getting home on 10%. I work outside and to truly not have to worry about batteries at all would be sweet. This phone does well but it negates the screen when I have to crank the brightness down to nothing to make it to 10% at the end of the day
The Note 4 is a great device, and the battery is pretty good. But I find myself having to adjust frequently to save battery life were I can. With the turbo I don't think that would be the case. Plus it charges incredibly fast.

What do you mean "can't write on SD" ? You're talking about can't write anything onto external mirco SD card? I have a 32gb and everything works just fine...or maybe I'm not understanding you?

You can save pictures and stuff but my apps won't write to the SD.
I'm feeling the same, I'm still thinking about it
