What to do with half broken S4 - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

So I have a S4 that was dropped in water and everything works great. . . other than the touchscreen. The picture is clear as can be on it, but I just cant touch it.
So I am looking for ideas on what to do with such a device.
Any ideas would be great.

buy circuit cleaner, buy a cheap toothbrush with no rubber bristles, open up your phone, remove your motherboard, spray brush and motherboard and quickly clean before liquid dries up, also do the same thing to the flex cables connection ports to the lcd and digitizer. lastly for good measure spray the charging port flex connectors and the actual charging port are cleaned. if it doesnt work you might need a new digitizer + lcd assembly.

Throw it in the garbage or claim on insurance. While sometimes phones recover after a water soaking, you will usually end up with a paperweight after the real damage begins to materialize later on.

If the phone was waterlogged recently, I would say to let it dry for a few days to a week, before turning it on again.

I did claim the insurance on it, and kept it. So I have a extra one to mess around with. . . . if I can get it working.
I am not sure if it will work, but I am thinking of getting a cord to do video out and use a bluetooth or use mouse and seeing where I can go from there.
I know some phones have chrome OS as a ROM so I might try that.

If you can't get it to work...
If you can't get the phone to work, you can sell it for "parts or repair" on eBay. People do this a lot with their broken phones and you can get a pretty good amount of money for a newer phone like the S4. The person who buys it will either try to fix it or use it for spare parts. I've seen broken iPhones go for hundreds of dollars. Trust me, even if it works now, it won't work a few months from now. I had a phone that got waterlogged and after it dried out it worked just fine but it died a few months later.

Was it Assurian? Won't they bill you for the retail price of the phone if you don't return it to them?

It amazes me how so many people on XDA promote fraud! No wonder the prices of phones and deductibles are so high.

If I am going to pay the same price for a lost phone vs a broken phone then I will call it lost and keep a half broken phone around for a fun project.
And I am almost sure they get their money worth...
$10 a month for 3 years is 360 plus 150, so I have paid them $520 in the long run. Now they give me some refurb phone, and I am going to say they are still making out very well. . . and that is just counting the insurance I pay on that phone. . . . so I have not even added in the money I pay or the other two lines.
Just saying. . . .
Also, not really the point to what I am asking, I am more looking for fun or cool ideas as to what I can try with it.
But the price of phones are so high only because we all pay the price and let them charge it. I mean do you really think it cost $600 to build a S4?
With 27.2 billion US dollars in profit for 2012 I am going to take a guess and say they are not hurting? Well thats just how I feel about it.

Well I might try to repair it, but after that I am still trying to find something cool to do with it. . . . . I dont want it just sitting in my desk for the next year.

Just an idea
Here's an idea:
For a small amount of money you can get some really good emulators on the Play Store that will allow you to play Play Station 1, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance and PSP games on your phone. There are also emulators for older consoles, too. Download ROMs (but only for games that you paid for) and turn it into a dedicated gaming phone!
Try these:
FPse
DraStic
SuperN64
PPSSPP
My Boy!

or you can paste plastic googley-eyes on it, sharpie yourself a crazy-mouth, and use it to keep your important documents from blowing off your desk!

Issues with Nexus components

Like others I cracked the screen on my beloved nexus one. keys and this phone is a pocket obviously dont mix
So i jamp straight on ebay grabbed a screen for £35 and sat down to repair screen.
Took one look at phone and thought better of it and headed to my mates phones shop who is quiet good at repairing phones.
we spent an hour stripping it all out from the back before finally been able to put the new digitizer (screen) in,
then whilst putting it all back together we managed to damage 2 of the stupid little copper antena's on the bottom of device,,cellular radio antennas to be precise. we tried to solder them back onto the circuit board but did'nt work...
now i gotta a £400 phone which works perfectly but only gets a cellular signal outside but not inside. and consequently its on sale on ebay for parts for someone because the only place to get them from is HTC,,,,and they literally rape you for them.
and me been me i'd rather buy something else after seening how cheap tacky bits of made in china rubbish they put in this handset.
what the phone can do is awesome...but seriously guys if you ever get to see one of these stripped down you'll soon loose faith in HTC's components. they are cheaper than cheap...almost to the point you cannot handle them physically...a total disgrace!
rant over lol
You screwed your phone yourself and now blaming it on HTC... Just send your phone to HTC before you break some more components in the process of fixing one....
its going on ebay....the parts on this phone are pants.....motorola droid here i come!!!!!
1. Literally rape you? **** off.
2. Chinese components in a phone made by a Taiwanese company? Shock horror.
Phone antennas are fragile on all phones, sucks to be you, but you've no-one to blame but yourself.
Lol dude, almost everything is made in China now. How about u just stop buying stuff now?
Yea. You're right. This thing is crappy. I mean I've only dropped mine with no case on it 5 or 6 times now and with the case in 7-8 times. this crappy thing still works. guess I'm going to have drop it off the top of a building. What's amazing is how people like yourself break a phone and then blame the manufacture, get over yourself. YOU broke the phone YOU TRIED to fix it when you should have sucked it up and sent it back to HTC to get it fixed. Probably cost you what, $150. You have no one to blame but yourself. I need an otterbox so when I get pissed I can throw this thing against the wall. theni when / if it breaks I can start a thread on how cheap the cases are made because they are from China. ok. rant done. lol.
Wow, what an idiot. Where do you think moto droids are made? China thats where, but no worries, in your hands it'll be another paper weight.
Speaking of components can we talk about the "flash" on this camera? Its really shameful. If they are going to sell a phone in a way that doesn't afford the consumer the opportunity to try it out (in a store) that's fine but its components really need to work. I shouldn't be put through the embarrassment of maneuvering my wife for 10 minutes trying to get a picture that isn't completely black only to be forced to use my mothers 6 year old pink Casio. Thanks HTC, you're awful. I wish Google, which is awesome, would head over to Sony or Samsung and give me hardware worth at least $300. Hell id even pay upwards of $575 for something like that.

[I require your knowledge!] HTC HD2...cracked screen.

I'm sorry if this is the wrong section to be posting this...but!
I was sitting at a buddies house waiting for my brother to come pick me up...my brother called me to say he was on his way, I got off the phone, set it in my lap. 5 minutes later I see his truck, so I stood up not realizing my phone was still in my lap...thought it was in my pocket. At first it didn't even realize I dropped it, I thought my friend next to me dropped his phone or something. Then I heard "Oooooo, damn that sucks." I looked down and there's my not even a month old hd2 chillin' on the ground with a cracked screen. So yeah, that happened about 30 minutes ago haha.
I got home and did a little research on what the warranty covers...
Code:
http://member.america.htc.com/download/web_materials/QSG/HTC_HD2/091017_Leo_HTC_WWE_QSG.pdf
Thats the quick start guide..and this is what it says.
General Precautions
Avoid applying excessive pressure to the device
Do not apply excessive pressure on the screen and the device to
prevent damaging them and remove the device from your pants’
pocket before sitting down. It is also recommended that you store
the device in a protective case and only use the device stylus
or your finger when interacting with the touch screen. Cracked
display screens due to improper handling are not covered by the
warranty.

Instantly I was like...fuuuuuuuuckkkkkkkk. So what can I do about this.. I went looking for replacement screens cause I was just going to replace it myself, I had to do the same thing with my ipod touch and it was pretty easy. It was like $30 to replace my ipod screen so I thought well it shouldn't be too costly. Ended up the screen would be like $65 to replace...which I don't got that kind of money, I'm 15 with no income lol. I haven't told my mom yet cause I wanted to know what I'm dealing with. So pretty much I'm asking if this is my last resort..to really have to spend $65 to replace it. Or is there a different way of dealing with this...Well I'm looking forward to reading your posts, hopefully I get some good news hah.
Here's the damage.
I did pretty good, right? Haha

Lmao yeah me niether, cheap mom . btw is it just the glass thats cracked or is it your lcd thats busted too?
this happened to my fiances phone. pissed me off pretty good. i have messed with a couple other phones and ipods and such, so i figured i'd try to do the replacement. i watched a 8 min vid on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdihThJFyz4) of a guy replacing the busted digitizer (glass) and it seemed pretty damn involved. the replacements were all about $65 but i figured i'd look into having a pro do it.
i live in the saint louis area, and called a well known local phone repair shop (wireless toyz) and they said they won't even touch the hd2 and evo, and i'm assuming the new droid x as well. the tech claimed their district manager wont allow them to do it because they had only done ONE so far and they screwed up a lot more stuff when they got it opened up. these guys work on A LOT of phones, and they had trouble with it.
i called another repair shop and he said $130 total, and he was actually in the middle of repairing one at the time (digitizer and lcd). he was the only guy i could find in stl that would work on it. another company quoted me $100, but he has only worked on iphones and was 40+ miles away from the house.
good luck, that sucks. hope you've got insurance, nobody will cover that on a warranty. tmobile's insurance (which i canceled!) wanted $130 for the deductable, but they'll just send you a brand new phone with another 1 year warranty. i didnt have insurance, and its costing me $130, and now since a 'non preferred' tech has worked on it, i'm assuming my warranty is void.

Its just the glass. Thank god, lol I can still use my phone until I find a way to get $100. Cause I guess If I replace the screen myself it voids the warranty so i'm just gunna save up money and have t-mobile send me a new phone. I'm not even sure what the exact price is gunna be.

Realize your local phone repair specialist was hired off of Craigslist for $9 an hour because he could solder. Its not surprising they screw up more hten they fix. I think the reason they don't mess with these phones is 1. The LCD prices are higher then normal phones, 2. Its pricey as hell if you screw up and have to replace the phone, 3. Not to many manuals or walkthroughs out yet. Chances are your just as qualified as they are. If they had someone that really knew their stuff repairing phones they would go out on their own and just buy broken phones then sell them themselves and make 6 times the money.
the shop i took mine to is called green mobile (greenmobileman.com)
the guy knows his ****. he's the owner of the franchise, theyre trying to expand nation wide. all they do is sell phones that they've parted together from other broke phones. he doesn't buy new parts on the phones that he sells, they're completely recycled. i understand what you mean by "the guy hired off craiglist," but i believe this guy isn't one of them.
No insurance I assume? This is exactly why I pay 6 bucks a month or whatever for the insurance because they replace it no matter what you do.
I've done this too, but I had insurance through my credit card and they replaced my phone at no charge (going through T-Mobile's insurance costs a deductible, but it's well worth it if you don't have a better option). Sorry for your misfortune..
I had the same thing happen to me. I called HTC and they were able to fix it for $50. Good luck.

Advice For Checking For Faults Before Buying

Hey guys. I know this may be put in another thread but I need as much advice ASAP, so more people that see this the better.
I want to buy the GS3 tomorrow. The thing is, where I live, its going for $1,100 and thats on special. Thats a crapload of cash, so I need to be certain I dont get stuck with a crappy phone.
I currently have the original Galaxy S, and that had a useless gps which gave me endless headaches. Don't want to get stuck with another phone with such a major defect.
Now I have been following this forum but I just wanted to know, besides the screen issues, is there anything to watch out for in terms of common manufacturing defects.
Also, what advice can be given on trying to detect screen issues whilst still in the store?
Thanks
Don't do it for that much!!! Where do you stay? Have you asked someone to purchase it for you, then send it to you?

I live in Zambia. Its a small country in Africa. The original GS1 sells for $600, the GS2 for $850 and the GS3 is $1,100. This is from a Samsung store. They just started selling the GS3 a few days ago. Actually, I am surprised that it was not more expenseve. Another phone store was selling them for $1,400.
I am really tired of my current phone. It lags too much and no gps. I think its done its time. Flashing roms stopped being too effective a while ago.
If I buy online, there is a chance that there will be a defect and it would be a pain in the backside to try to return it. Shipping itself would cost a bomb, not to mention taxes or the fact that the phone may not reach me at all.
I am still debating whether to get the phone or not, but I nearly bought it today itself, but restrained myself and came straight here to see if I can make sure I dont get a defective unit

Dude, preaching to the choir. My hat's off to you, lol. Really though, just get as hands-on with the phone in store as possible to make sure you don't see any pixel issues. In store there isn't a whole lot you can do for testing as people generally find issues over the course of a few days or longer. That said, can you not buy the phone on amazon for cheaper than $1,100?

I could get it from Amazon, but with shipping, taxes, and duty here in zambia, it will still come pretty high. Still cheaper that $1,100, but if it is defective, I have to ship it back and hope the next one they send me is good. If not, then this will turn out to be an even bigger disaster than spending over a grand on a phone.
Also, I have this fear that the phone will never reach me.

Amazon customer service has never let me down. That's all I can say there. Also, I got mine from Amazon and it's in perfect condition. Can you select a UPS shipping option? Because if you can then you'll get your phone. If it's shipped UPS they'll have the tracking number to ensure it got to you.

gf dropped my phone, screen cracked.....

:crying:So my girlfriend managed to drop my beautiful white s3 and now i wanna drop her ass. somehow she managed to break it the same day i rooted it and started to truly enjoy it.
Screen cracked at the top corner now theres a spider crack all over the top of the screen with a couple of cracks that run down to the middle phone still works, but the crack is killing me on the inside hehe. Now funny part is i bought the defender for it the day i bought it cause i knew it was too weak to handle a hard drop, and i've been checking the mail for it for 2 weeks now. then she comes and does that just the day before it arrived. After crying inside a while and just wanting to punch someone i managed to start looking at options.
checked online and the parts cost $240-$290, bell and best buy can fix it by it'll cost at least $325. I also bought the best buy protection plan (12.99/month). am thinking I should be able to find some cheap non-samsung parts for much cheaper than that, replace the screen and give it to best buy for an exchange as long as something is wrong with it (not sure wt though )

Only thing I could think of is they might do it different over there in Canada. I think that is where the OP is from.
Just posted about this in the other cracked screen thread...
"Missed my damn pocket on Saturday night, and dropped mine on the garage floor. Got a small crack about as wide a finger nail from the right side of the ear piece curving up to the edge. Which is strange, cause the only other mark on the phone is a small scuff at the bottom of the back cover. But, I have BB insurance, so its in being fixed with no deductible! I've dropped my epic a few times in the last year, and not scratch on the screen. Makes me wonder what they changed in the formula from og gorilla glass to gorilla glass 2.
As much as I don't want to add all the bulk to it, the Otterbox Defender, or Trident Kraken may be in its future...

not sure how you guys manage your finances, but if there is a fee, shouldn't see be paying for it?
If I dropped my girl's laptop, phone, crashed her car (or w/e) and we weren't pretty much married, I would cover it to get whatever it is fixed.
I dropped my friend's motorcycle helmet while handing it to him several years ago. he didn't have a good grip and as I passed it, it slipped into his hand from mine and fell to the concrete floor. it was still intact, but had nice bruising from the concrete. I apologized and got him a new one within a week...

What girlfriend?
The PEP from Best Buy in Canada is different than the one in the US. It does not cover physical damage, liquid damage, basically they call it "stupidity". I'm not calling it that, that's how they word it. PEP from Best Buy only extends the manufacturer's warranty. So instead of getting refurbs, you get brand new replacements. And you can pick a different phone if you want. I posted in another thread indicating that no carrier or 3rd party store in Canada offers insurance anymore. At least not that I'm aware of. It sucks because Best Buy charges $12.99 + taxes per month for the PEP. I have 2 PEP's from Best Buy. On one of my PEP's, I already got 3 brand new replacement phones. On my
2nd one I got one brand new replacement in which I chose a different model.
So both already paid itself.

Wow I can't imagine trying to sell that to customers. It's already hard enough trying to get people to get the 9.99 plan that replaces the phone with no deductible. Customers say "if I break the phone I'll buy a new one for 200, not realizing the phone is $650.

Yea best buy Canada is another story they do not cover physical or water damage... Am gonna try calling visa today to see if there is any insurance that my purchase can be covered under... But after reading online about this am no longer hopeful for anything....
Next time buy the case before even thinking of buying the phone... And do not trust a girl with a delicate thing like your phone...

Dropped phone facedown...what are my options?

So I dropped my phone at Whataburger today and it fell facedown and the whole screen has like hairline cracks (but no bumps whatsoever). I want to exchange it because of my damn OCD, it just bothers me. Is there a way to take it to T-Mobile and say that something is defective and get a free replacement since I have warrenty? I was thinking of saying that I was putting on an Otterbox case, and when I tried to take it off, the phone screen cracked...or something along those lines. I was googling and I read that I had to pay up to $199 to replace the screen from Samsung directly. Any other options? I'm a broke college student barley making it and I don't want to make my mom pay for it. Right now I'm on the phone with my mom, and I keep on hearing the screen crack, and I'm afraid the screen is just gonna shatter at any moment, or while it's in my pocket
Bro if you are a college student what are you doing with an 800$ phone m8? Lol

You are asking for advice on how to con T-Mobile, yet clearly admitting to being at fault. Sorry, my advice is to suck it up. Slap a screen protector on and learn from your mistakes.

I had been saving up to buy a better, faster, and more useful phone that would help out in my studies
What is wrong with you, dude? Do you really think T-Mobile would even buy your Otterbox excuse? Stop trying to scam people and own up to your own mistakes.
I don't think they will cover for it even if you have warranty since it's physical damage. If you have insurance then that will be a different story. If I were you, I'll just find a local store to try and replace it. If not, probably have to suck it up with a protector.
Sorry this happened to you, mistakes happens.
I'm also a college student so I know the struggles.
Good luck!

How long have you had the phone for? If it has been less than 30 days, you can still purchase squaretrade. If you used an amex card to purchase it in the past 90 days, you could apply for purchase protection through them.
Also FYI, the cost of screen replacement from Samsung is $269.xx. Source: I cracked my screen too . Thankfully I already had squaretrade, so my out of pocket was $99.
I wanted a faster to phone to improve my studies....said no one ever.
Give me a break....you can get a part-time job and earn some cash and buy a new phone or repair it.
Filing an insurance claim would probably be the cheapest, legitimate way of getting it fixed.

Damn...well how would I go about getting the insurance? Would it have to be through Samsung?? Yeah I'm going to go to the store tomorrow and try to get it replaced or see what can be done. Thank you, it sucks that such an expensive phone would get it's screen broken easily :/

Thank you for actually typing out a reply that will help me out unlike some others here. I've had the phone since launch day. I purchased it in the store through credit card, so I doubt I can do that. So basically I'd have to get the screen replaced? I can't tell T-Mobile that my phone is faulty? (Because legitametly, I've been having problems with the speaker, and the phone has been messing up quite a bit way before I dropped it). I think they should supply a refurbished phone, no? That is way to expensive to get the screen replaced by the way...but it's worth it. I was thinking of getting squaretrade, but I didn't think that this would happen to my phone since I had a case on it.

How would I go about doing that? I've never done that, as usually I just take it to T-Mobile whenever I have problems with my phone.
Clear nail polish if they really are micro cracks it should fill them in and not brake the phone. If the cracks are all the way through or huge it won't help as much though. Also it's only 200 to get the screen fixed. Go get a bar tending job you will make that money in one night. Grow up don't ask your mom for money, or try to rip off tmobile

If you have insurance on your phone, you have to contact the insurance company.
I'm on the original Jump program, so it's part of Jump, for me. There's usually a deductible though.

Cracked screen through insurance is 175, girlfriend dropped hers. If you didn't have the cracks, you could of called t-mobile and did a exchange where they would send you a refurb first and return your phone after receiving the refurb. If you this with your current phone, they will find out and charge your account so don't try it.
My girlfriend did the same, her crappy Caseology case did nothing but look pretty.
T-Mobile insurance the deductible is 175 for the S7E.

I don't know if the store would side with you on that (claiming that there were other problems before the screen cracked). Even then, perhaps they would try fixing those other problems without addressing the cracked screen. Bottom line, a cracked screen is not covered under the standard Samsung warranty so you'll have to pay to get that fixed either way. Good luck :good:
