So when I leave all the band settings to auto on the phone, it immediately connects to AT&T's 3G network and shows the "H" in the title bar it worked for a little while then calls stopped coming through, after a hard reset it works again with calls for a few hours, then it begins to fail.
If I switch the bands to GSM and manually select the frequencies (850 + 1900, according to wm) then it connects to the EDGE network, and I can make and receive calls as I please, no problems, except for the crappy network speed.
So someone help me out here please, is the phone defective, or is it not working as it should because of the lack of the 850 band? I know that AT&T works on either or but this problem has me stumped.
Other than this rather huge problem (phone that cant make calls), I absolutely love the Xperia and would hate to return and wait for another.
did you try to use the connection wizard to let the phone config itself?
after I put my iphone sim in it shows the H/3G icon on anf off all the time, while I can receive call I was unable to go online.... after someone suggested me to call att to update the imei on my account to the x1, I found that I still have to go to connection and change the setting myself b4 it can go online. you will have to remove the user name and pw in media net setting and uncheck the proxy server.
I guess my case is a little different than yours but I guess you can give it a try... good luck =)
Thanks, I actually haven't tried that since i figured it would be the same as what happens when you turn the phone on for the first time, when it autoconfigs.
if it say it detect a new sim and ask if you want to do the auto config then I guess its the same... but again I did need to change some settings inside the network config to make it work too... so I am guessing the "auto config" has some flaw in it
No problem with my X1i when I venture in a1900mhz area close to my home. I live in a small town in Ca. only 850mhz here. But in the larger Metro area around me... No Problems with calls or hspeed data access...

Thanks for the replies, It looks like the Configuration wizard in the settings menu did the trick. It do something else that the autoconfig doesnt. The phone seems to work now just fine, although it doesnt hang on to the signal as well as my old k790a. The office I work in is an ATT dead zone and I could make calls using the K790a with only one bar, with the Xperia it either doesnt go through or drops the call.
Again this is better as it works now, just not as well as my old phone.
Also, scl_electronics, so you are saying the X1i has both 850 and 1900mhz bands? I had a feeling mine did too, but I thought it was put to rest that that wasnt the case with the X1i....
Sorry Aaron J,
i should have been more specific!! Where I live, 3G is only on 850mhz band so I don't get access..Just The edge network. When I venture about 10 mile away toward the major Metro areas..The 1900mhz band are used. So the H is displayed, but I don't have those access problems for calls or data!!
But i am waiting to see if they can crack the rom for 850mhz-3G access!!

Oh ok thats kind of makes, sense although I thought the X1i didnt have an 850 band at all, so what frequency does it work off then?
Anyways, back to my problem....I spoke too soon, it dont work on 3G switched to EDGE. I might just try getting a new sim card, mine is a Cingular one from 2005, that has been in at least 4 different phones now including the X1i.

Well out here in Ca... 850mhz gsm/edge is used ..So I quad band gsm phone is handy!!!
Stuart
Yes it is! My little problem is a little confusing though as one thing I just realized that I didnt say before is that the phone has no problem connecting to the 3G network using HSDPA. I get full bars with the H icon pretty much everywhere in my area and my data speeds are very good. So I can surf the net, download programs, watch high quality youtube videos using the app in touchflo and even send and receive texts just fine.....just no calls when on 3G. I'm hoping its just setting somewhere and not a faulty device.
I live in Raleigh NC by the way so maybe it could be a faulty tower?
Well when venture into Stockton Ca. my phone switches to 3G-HSDPA:1900MHZ Without a connection hitch....
Have you tried a soft reset......
But when all else fails Hard Reset to the Rescue!!!
Btw... in several of my ppc-wm units when restoring to OEM setting(hard reset) there has been many time the process had a problem. So something would be screwed up!! So when You don't succeed, try another hard reset!!
Good luck,
Stuart
hey i was wonder if your problem is HSDPA/HSUPA being on, i have at&t also and it worked for the first few weeks fine with it being on then all of a sudden it stopped and couldn't connect to the internet, before i had the H/Edge showing up and also my email never updated when it was set to do it every 15minutes. Now that i disable the HSDPA/HSUPA i see 3G/Edge and email update all the time on the X1i. Just wonder if that might fix it, I'm all kinda still new to all this but i had my X1i for 2 1/2 weeks now.
Hello thanks for all the suggestions, Experiaenjoy, no I haven't tried mainly because I can connect to the data network just fine and get awesome speeds with full bars pretty much everywhere, all of my data related activities and programs work just fine (aka murder my battery life ). I just cant make calls while on 3G.
I talked to a coworker today who used to be a regional manager at AT&T hee said that he saw many cases of people who were having problems where it was due to the SIM card. He said they all had the older orange Cingular card and that an update to the new blue AT&T card solved all problems. So right now I'm trying to see if I can get mine updated (I do have an older Cingular SIM). Once I get that, I will do a hard reset (3rd one also done about 20 soft resets since I 've had it-I've installed a bunch of programs and tweaks) and skip the auto config and go straight to the connection wizard.
I woke up this morning and 3g was no longer working. The 3G icon on my notification bar still shows traffic (up/down arrows light up) but I can't connect to any websites, twitter, gv sms, nothing. When I connect to wifi or set my phone to 2g networks only everything works fine. Any suggestions?

Call tmobile ask if there's an outage in your area for 3g? If not i'm sure they'll transfer you to google tech support who can help you out more.
Sounds like this is a tmobile network issue or a potential bug with the latest release (did you upgrade?). If it happened after recently upgrading to the new froyo and especially if you didn't before or after upgrading.. do a factory reset/hard wipe (backup first just to be double safe) see if it goes away.
Same happened to me. Not the build cause my wife's tp2 also had no 3g. Then after 2 hours on the phone with tmobile and no help and all day later they both work now ..
It was definitely tmobile

Yeah there was a bunch of people complaining about data and connecting via 3g on the forums here. Figured it had to be one of the two.
I just picked up a Vibrant today from craigslist (sold my HD2 a couple of hours before ) and internet was working fine for a few hours. I went to the marketplace and downloaded about 30-40 apps then i went to try some of them out and i would get error messages saying i dont have internet but at the top bar there is a 3G symbol. I tried doing a battery pull 3 times to see if that would help but nothing. I even tried switching to only 2G but that didnt help either. Any tips? Im thinking of doing a hard reset just to reset everything incase something odd happened but id rather not because i already started setting up the phone how i like it.
I'm guessing it's because you need to switch your internet data plan to the Android plan, assuming you are on T-Mobile. If you had anything else it would likely work for a few and then stop.
Try go to a different location. I was having problems with 3G at work, would only show uplink but no downlink on my mytouch. Called t-mobile up and opened a trouble ticket and it was fixed today. 3G worked everywhere else but where my work is.
This is likely due to a problem with T-Mobile's data network tonight. For the last few hours data (EDGE and 3G) has not worked not only in my area, but around the entire United States (NY, Vegas, Illinois, Florida, etc).
People have been tweeting about it all night so far: http://search.twitter.com/search?q=tmobile
Some of the latest tweets as of this posts have a few people saying 3G is working for them but no EDGE. If true at all. This is not the case for me, still down here.

Log on to your tmobile account online and see your device, might need to be switched to vibrant from hd2 and you should then get android data instead of what you had with hd2
im retarded i had to call tmo CS and have them switch me to an android plan.
So I got this phone from my friend asking to help him because quite recently his phone would start dropping calls and losing signal. He was running completely stock on Android 2.2 He asked if I could take a look and try to get it working. So after doing some researching in the sub I found the rooting app and decided to put CM7.1 on his phone. Everything works great now considering he couldn't get a call to go through but it only has edge and that's only after waiting a couple minutes after boot. There isn't an option in CM7 to choose WCDMA but it does have the check box for 2g only. Anyway calls go through fine now as well as texts but god Edge is so slow. WiFi works fine as well. Anyway What on earth do I do to get 3g working?
I have also done the Defy Baseband switcher, everything but T-Mobile 3.4.2 -107-9 works. The only thing I can think of doing next is having him switch out his sim card through T-mobile. If someone else has an idea I would love to hear it cause I am just spinning my wheels.
Also I did install CM7.2 and it had the option for WCDMA which forced the 3g icon but it never would do anything about data for it. It would just sit at a webpage and timeout. Anyway back at CM7.1 and waiting to see what happens.
Thanks ahead of time for the help guys.
Anyone with any other ideas or something simple I am missing?
I have a very similar problem. I have installed WhiteRabbitEddtion 1.5 for Defy+ MB526 (based on CM7.2 I think). When it tries for operate on 3G, it works for a while, then just loses the network. It looks like the receiver goes deaf or something. If I select 2G only, it seems to work fine. But then restricted to EDGE data rates -- bummer.
My network operator is Telstra (Australia) - 850/2100 MHz.
Hello, I have an unlocked i337 and i am currently using it with Tmobile. Almost everything seems to be working fine with it except a few hiccups and I was hoping someone could help me figure out what is wrong.
1. After I unlocked it using the service method I was getting 4G (HSPA+) speeds most of the time and sometimes 4G LTE speeds. The data speeds were great and I was receiving incoming and outgoing text messages fine. But while I was able to make calls just fine I was unable to receive any calls. Anyone who dial my number would go straight to voicemail. After messing around a bit with the phone my solution was to us *#2263# and select "WCDMA and GSM only". Once I did that I lost the LTE speeds but I was able to still maintain HSPA+ and receive phone calls.
Any solution to this without sacrificing LTE?
2. While I can can receive MMS messages fine it takes a really, really long time to send one(hours) and sometimes it doesn't send at all. My data is HSPA+ and pretty fast and I have excellent service in my area so I can't figure out what is wrong with it. I have been using Viber and tango to get around it.
Any idea what I can do?
3. I have to make frequent trips to a hospital for my son who has a congenital heart defect(so we are there for 6-7 hours at a time). In the hospital, the service is very poor but they offer free wifi. My previous phone was a tmobile Note 2 and it had wifi calling so I was able to get service while there.
Can I flash a tmobile S4 ROM to get wifi calling to work? Will I lose my unlock or brick my phone if I flash it? Should I use the MOD that enables
all AWS bands first?
thanks in advance for any help you guys can give.
