Boot into Odin/Download mode to install recovery...
Google for that, but for starter, power off your phone completely then hold POWER + VOLUME DOWN button at the same time, you'll be prompted for pressing the VOLUME UP button to continue, press VOL UP. You'll get kicked into ODIN/DOWNLOAD mode, there you can use ODIN to flash custom recoveries.

I tried this but every time I use a stock recovery it fails for some reason.
Would this method work?
http://qbking77.com/development/how-to-unroot-and-unbrick-the-samsung-galaxy-s4/
You need to make sure you are using the correct stock tar file. If you were on 4.3 than you can only odin MJA or MK2 any older stock tars will fail. Download the latest from sammobile.com or samsung-updates.
try unchecking reboot and reset time in odin. I have had issues with this in the past.
One click odin..
HI there i been messing with that 1 click odin i havent get it 2 work but "cruise350" is right you need to download the right STOCK
because every time it does the same thing to me i just restore it to original STOCK or FIRMWARE with ODIN3
good luck...

Also make sure you are running Odin as administrator.

Unfortunately I have deleted the system of my S4 i9505 from within TWRP :crying:
After having some fun with CyanogenMod I decided to try out the PAC rom. Following the installation instructions on their mod page I wiped the internal data of my phone but what as I was sliding the confirmation I realised that 'system' was checked. Too late
I have read through countless threads on this sight and others but have not had any success.
I have located the stock recovery image for my device.
When my device is first switched on I can still hit volume down + power button, and then volume up to enter the downloading mode (but if I don't the booting begins to loop at the Samsung Galaxy S4 logo and goes no further). Odin still recognises my phone and allows me to flash roms but when it does the auto re-boot at the end I don't have a system and it gets stuck on the booting at the Galaxy S4 logo.
Several threads have suggested that I Fastboot, I'm not sure if this is even an option with the S4 or not but please let me know if it you're sure that it is. I have been unsuccessful with my Fastboot attempts so far but if I just need to persevere with it then I can.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated :fingers-crossed:
In TWRP. Setting and Enable MD5 verification of backup files. (It maybe help.) Or Skip MD5 generation of backup.
And why you don´t flash stock ROM via Odin??
It's really easy.
Just reflash TWRP true Odin. Then flash the rom you want. That's all you need to do.

I'm not sure what the first part of your post means but I am not even able to access TWRP, that is the problem.
I have flashed the stock ROM via Odin. After I flash the ROM it does the normal re-boot. But I my phone loops on the splash screen without every actually re-booting properly.

I have reflashed it but as described above my phone fails to reboot after the flash.
I might be missing something here. I'm not sure how to get into recovery mode after flashing the ROM. Immediately as the device begins to re-boot I've tried holding power button + volume up + home button but the screen goes black and when I let go of the buttons the phone just auto boots itself.
EDIT: My phone automatically attempts to boot whenever it is connected to USB.
Is it possible to flash an entire OS in a ROM rather than just altering the recovery??
1. Flash TWRP recovery true Odin. Make sure Auto-reboot is UNCHECKED. After it finished flashing, unplug it, reboot and try to get to recovery now.

I have done that again (now having turned off the Auto-reboot (thanks btw). I can get Odin to come up with a big green PASS for flashing TWRP. Now when I try to boot into recovery however the phone vibrates and the flash screen comes up but then it powers down again. I'm just holding power button + volume up + home button to attempt getting into recovery but it isn't working. Do I need to try and flash another ROM?
EDIT: SUCCESS!!!! I made it to recovery (apparently this post was premature). It looks like failing to un-check the auto-reboot in ODIN was the problem. Thanks a lot man, that was a massive help. From recovery I was able to flash my backup ROM.

No a rom has nothing to do with the recovery not working. Are you holding the buttons long enough? Just try to hold them for like 30 seconds even if it reboots 3 times.

Good to hear
I tried to upgrade to the latest version via Keis on my rooted S5. After it said it was successful, it rebooted and now it freezes on the verizon screen when it loads and goes no further. I tried to reset the phone by using Odin 3.09 and the original stock kernal G900V_NCG_Stock_Kernel.tar.md5 but it will just stay at the "samsung unlocked" screen, reboot, then goes into recovery mode. I have done a factory reset on it and re-tried the upgrade with no luck. It will only boot into the recovery mode automatically (I don't have to press anything, it just goes strait to it when it boots). Any advice?
Thank you,

Try this:
1 wipe data/factory reset in recovery
2 remove battery when done
3 start odin, load lollipop firmware, do not connect phone
4 hold volume down, home button and power. do not insert battery
5 insert battery, while holding volume down, home button and power
6 it should boot to download mode
7 now connect to pc
8 flash verizon lollipop in odin

I was able to finally get it working by following the directions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784880
I did try your way but it still gave me the same error. I think something got f'd up on the partitioning? I'm not sure, but i loaded it into Odin and it kept on failing. Only after I re-partitioned it, it finally came back. Thank you though for your help.

Glad it worked out and thanks for telling how you solved it.
Quite strange to see something unusual with my i9500.
When I enter download mode by pressing vol down+home+power and hit vol up i get this screen -[attachment: download-mode-1.jpg]
lets call it download mode 1
when i connect it to pc and flash via odin (twrp.tar.md5 or stockrom.tar.md5) flashing starts and odin shows the green pass message but after reboot i find my phone in its original state!! Nothing was actually flashed, the phone remained untouched!!!
When i enter download mode by adb command "adb reboot download' I get this screen -[attachment: download-mode-2.jpg]
lets call it download mode 2
the same odin shows green pass after flashing the same files and after reboot i actually see my phone in its new state. Everything flashes successfully.
i tried doing this by using different odin versions (odin 3.07, 3.10, 3,10.7) but i got the same result. Then i tried doing it afer rooting, again the same result . It seems that i9500 has two download modes. I am not the only person who experienced this, check this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2293366
Also, in download mode 1, there is a line in blue colour "Secure Download: Enabled" . However the line disappeared after flashing cm12.1 through philz recovery
Does anyone has an explanation for this? Does i9500 really has two download modes or am i misintertpreting things?
S4 users please check this with your phone, i want to know if every s4 has similar issue. Because in future if i brick this phone i wont be able to recover it by flashing stock rom in download mode (by hardware buttons) via odin. This phone doesnt let me flash anything by odin when i enter download mode using key combinations

The flashing of the recovery is fixed by unchecking auto reboot in Odin. Probably same with the rom you are trying.
Regarding the different download mode. Some users reported similar cases. I think some fixed it by pulling the battery out, pressing the power button + volume down or up and then putting the battery back in. That way they could flash in download mode.
i will try this and post back.
what about the "secure download: enabled" line in download mode? i didnt see this line in other sammy devices

Before you flash a custom recovery on odin you must uncheck autoreboot on odin and then once you flash custom recovery you have to manually turn of phone and turn on using recovery combo

Don't switch it off. Straight after it starts up after using the download combo move you finger from the volume down to the volume up button, then you should be in custom recovery.

I flashed my grand prime last year with lollipop, now I tried to factory reset it on settings and got bricked, now it is back to 5.0.2 and whenever I factory reset, I have to use odin first. how can I fix that? I want to factory reset it without odin just like normal phone.
Have you tried to do a factory reset via recovery? and what do you mean by "now it is back to 5.0.2..."? did you flash a newer version and get back?

I tried recovery but it directs on downloading, I guess they vanished when I flashed it to 5.0.2 last year. I downloaded 4.4.4 stock rom awhile ago but it failed, then I restart but it resets as 5.0.2 help please T_T

What is your phone model? maybe you're flashing the wrong firmware for your device, that's why it's getting error and by the way, turn your phone completely off and press home + vol down + power just to make sure if recovery has vanished (I think it's not possible either)

It's alright, and then? I wrote that wrong?, press volume UP instead of DOWN to get to recovery mode, if you press down it'll go to download mode, unless you want to reflash tour firmware wit Odin
