Hello.
I have noticed twice now that my phone only outputs mono audio (1 channel, same sound in both left and right ear). The first time this happened I spent an hour trying to fix this by looking everywhere in the settings. It was set to output stereo though, but still wouldn't work. This was the first time that I tested the headphones that came with the phone. I also tested other headphones and speakers but it would output mono sound on all of them.
Finally I tried to restart the phone and that fixed it... But now a few weeks after this happened I was going to use my headphones again (I don't use them very often) and noticed once again that there was mono sound. A restart fixed it this time too.
Why do you think this is happening? Has anyone else experienced the same thing?
Thank you in advance!

I have noticed that when using the supplied earphones I can hear static background noise when I scroll through menus and buttons while music is playing. This only happens when music is activated and I can hear a low annoying fuzzy static that gets louder the more I scroll for example.
I can barely hear it when I put on headphones but can with earphones, seems quite strange wonder if anyone else experiences the same thing?
No one? Just try it, turn the volume down while listening to music then go to home screen and scroll left constantly or right and the hissing noise will get louder.
Audio chip or whatever must be quite crappy.
Restarted phone and can't seem to hear it now. Strange.
I'm glad that by talking to your self you've managed to fix this problem.
I spoke to myself to soon! Its back and I suspect it has something to do with the wifi sharing. As I activated kies air, uploaded a song, listened to song and hissing is back! argh.

Try force stopping it? I've frozen most Samsung apps but even before then I had no problems at all with something like this tbh...although I don't use the stock music player.
I have annoying static background noise while using earphones, it can be better heard whilr using the phone when no music is playing.
This is a general issue or isolated cause?
I have this!!! I seem to get possibly some kind of audible distortion just before i play a song, and then when i pause the song and touch the screen it makes the weird static noise (and possibly when the song is playing as well, but its less identifiable). For me this noise only lasts for about 5 seconds after i have paused it and then stops. And yes, it also seems to be louder in earphones than headphones.
HAVE YOU FOUND A FIX? Firmware upgrades? Sent it back and got a replacement? what did you guys do? Let me know, thanks.
Could it be evp?

I installed the Backslash Kernel and THEN noticed this, rebooted and it went.
It came back a while after. I also unplugged the headphones with the music app running and the phone rebooted.
Re-flashed the CF-Root KG1 Kernel and it went away, not had any 'noise' or reboots since :/
I got a replacement from orange as this issue was too distracting. My replacement has just come, but exactly the same 'static noise while and after listening to music' issue is still here!!! Is this really what its like for everyone but people don't bother saying?

KERNAL VERSION: [email protected] #2
On my last phone i tried flashing to generic KE7 AND KF3 (using odin). Both seemed to make the sound last for not as long after i pause the music, but did not solve the issue. Will rooting the phone, using different kernals and whatnot fix this? Could it be a dodgy batch of phones from orange? (I have no knowledge of what rooting and kernals actually is, let alone what ones i should use)
I have also experienced this. It seems the screen is the problem since the noise is gone when the screen is off.
What headphones are you using?
I have used the supplied headphones, but i have also tried other headphones as well. All seem to give the same sound but possibly at varying levels of volume. Do you still have the problem?
I use the Sennheiser CX300 II and I do not experience it any longer.
It depends on the impedance of the headphones. If the impedance is 16 ohm I cannot hear it but on 12 ohm headphones it is pretty obvious (but they are able to play louder).
I have not tried the supplied ones myself because they ALWAYS sound awful but if you had a specific name for a proper headphone you have tried, you can easily find their impedance on the internet.
Hmm well i have tried my creative EP-630 headphones which have impedance of 16 Ohm and i can still hear the noise. I have used many terrible headphones on terrible 'mp3 players' over the years and i have never experienced this, so i don't see why i should now go out and buy some new headphones. Although if you are really saying that the Sennheiser CX300 II headphones completely cured your problem then it might be worth it? Was your problem exactly the same as the one i described? Cheers.
It's obviously a problem of the audio amp picking up electrical noise from the other components of the device. I'm skeptic that anything can be done to solve it.
I also can hear some faint background noise on mine when scroling the screen and using memory, but anyway it's very faint... not enough to bother even in quiet environments.
I have to agree, it's bad shielding in the design. Something we will all have to live with.
I notice it most between songs when listening to music. Each songs starts with a little blast of noise.
Hmmm well i've heard that with certain kernals it is not there. Also for me, simply changing to different stock firmware reduced the time that the static sound lasts after i pause a song, so surely that can mean it can be stopped altogether. Im not prepared to give up on this (yet).
I would be grateful for other information and reports from other people about this issue, even simply if you don't have it. :/
...anyone?

i have this problem too...
but i have found that it does with some earphones... i guess its a matter of shielding, as posted before.
Has anyone noticed a problem with using headphones? I have tried 4 different pairs and only managed to get 1 pair working properly. The problem is that when you plug the headphones in the small headphones icon appears in the lower right hand side but when you play the music it comes through both the headphones and also the speaker. It seems to be the headphones are not seating properly.
same problem!!
yess i have the same problemm!!!
i realised that to fix this problem, you have to plug in the headphones while firstly playing any songs through the tablet speakers, then it detects there's headphone plugged in.
This is issue is really pissing me off!! i hope they fix it asap!
yes i had that problem and felt like an idiot when i finally realised that i was sharing my music with everyone on the bus!
very weird problem which has stopped me from listening to music on my a500 even though the audio quality is superior to my Sony Ericsson X10 and my HTC Sensation.
Thanks for the tip - I'll try it out tonight!

this trick works for me too, but only while the audio is playing through the specific app. if i stop music while doing this trick and change to video it out puts the video out of both speakers and headphones again.
It really has nothing to do with the jack seating, it has to do with the audio mixer and the jack detection.
it should be fixed eventually (hoping with ICS) but for now I have to take my headphones off and check the output like a weirdo anytime I want to switch apps using headphones.
Hi, I have also this problem but I noticed another strange thing : when you listen to a track using headphones the stereo image looks moved slightly to the right, it's not well centered. Is it only a problem of my A500 or is it general ?
Thanks
Ramp
Are you guys using non-stock ROM or something? I am on stock 3.1 and I am not having any kinds of issues with it, headphones work just fine and the stereo image is as centered as it should. Or maybe it's your headphones, have you tried with other devices?
I'm on Taboonay 2.1 and i can't remember noticing it when i was using stock rom. I only noticed it because i felt the slight vibration coming from the speakers. I have got 1 Set of headphones that work really well with it and it only happens with my other headphones which weren't exactly cheap (typical) but they all work on everything else i plug them into, so i think it's more to do with the seating of the headphones rather than the rom because i've got a pair that work fine, although i now have some doubt so i'm going to try them all out again to make sure
Same problem here, with Taboney 2.1 and different head phones.
Hi, just upgraded to 3.2 original and now everything comes out in mono. No stereo from headphones. Anyone having the same prob? Wow, things are getting even worse....
Ramp
I had this same problem too on stock HC 3.1
The trick works for me; but is rather annoying trying to drive and play music at the same time
I have recently changed to Lightspeed ROM with Thor 3.7 (the rest) kernel and have not experienced any sound issue yet =]
I have some problems with the last Tabooney 3.2 ROM and headphones too.
Sound goes through headphone and tab speakers.
I noticed that if I unplug and plug headphones twice or three times I could only have sound into headphones and works well.
I never used OTA ROM so, can't say if it works well with it, but there is a prob with Taboonay's ROM.
I can't post in DEV thread (regard to my posts count).
Hey all
Would just like to know a cause and perhaps a solution to a problem I have.whenever I have my earphones plugged in there is a crackly sound every couple of moments.this happens no matter what volume my phone is on.it ceases when I have any form of media playing.so I would play a video and lower the volume to min to check and the crackling stops.
The problem is not in the earphones as I've tried with many including an expensive pair of headphones.anybody have any idea cheers folks
By the way I also have this problem my Xperia Neo
It's due to the speaker being clogged up by ear gunk they need to be cleaned

But he already made a point that it's software related... "so I would play a video and lower the volume to min to check and the crackling stops."
That's an interesting observation about it being a software problem.being a software problem would it be more likely that I'd be able to fix the problem myself?
The last thing I want to do is factory reset so I'm looking for other options before I try that.
Thanks for the replies lads

I too am having this issue, if it can be called as such, except it happens only when I plug it through my car's audio system.
Similar as above, it goes *pop* - *pop* - *pop*, etc every second or so (on the audio system).
As above, it also happens when there is no sound (any form, media-navigation-TTS-call) playing at all.
Out of curiosity do you have an amp of any sorts for your earphones/headphones ?
I haven't tried with an app but the popping you described is the problem I'm having.maybe I'm just fussing but it's a bit annoying when browsing on the phone with earphones.
Thanks for the replies
Has anyone else noticed crackly audio with the M? Mine has crackly sound when playing music through the phone speaker, bluetooth connected to my car, or wired to a portable speaker. It does it with Pandora, YouTube and Slacker. With it effecting pretty much anything anytime, anywhere, and at any volume level (I thought it might have just been turned up too high), I am lead to believe it is the phone and not an app or peripheral issue. Is there a fix for this? I would hate to have to return this great device for such a small issue, but Pandora is my most used app and I am very annoyed by this problem. Thanks in advance!
I have no problem with sound on my phone even at loudest setting on speaker have you tried messing with the equalizer settings to see if it helps.

I don't have any issues with music, but I do have crackling the last few days on voice calls. I have not yet confirmed whether signal strength is a factor.
Hey guys. google music player was working fine for ages. but now. I noticed that when a track changes sometimes I cant hear any playback. the counter is still moving ect. and I have to pause the song and unpause it to hear it.
has anyone else had this happen?

YES.
Just noticed this Sunday. Thought I had it tied to Wanam just because it happened when I saw Wanam was getting root access. Uninstalled and it still happens.
This does not happen with my BT ear buds. Only when wired in my truck. When it does quiet, I can unplus the aux cable, unpause the music and play it through the phone speaker at any volume with no issue. Plug back in the aux cable and it is back to normal. But skip a track and the volume goes away again.
Oh and I did delete all data and cache. No luck.
