It wont let me select a contact when I click on to
I can go to the contacts and press the smiley face thing and it will let me but if I try to type the name it just types it with no number. ir just randomly creates numbers. ive already done a hard/soft/factory reset
what am I doing wrong?
this is pissing me off
Try using handcent sms and see if that works
is that an SMS app?
The best i bet 80% of the people here use it
this fixed it, but I HATE the way it looks, no way we can get the original SMS app working correctly?

Handcent can be fully customized so the look can be changed dramatically.
Have you tried settings. Privacy. Reset to default? And Forgive me i'm assuming you already restarted the phone To see if that fixed it...
In Handcent go to the settings, you can change almost every single aspect of the app, its pretty damn cool
Weird, I want to report I've had no issue with the original SMS program, I can't seem to reproduce that. Do people really use handcent?
I dont know anyone personally that doesnt use handcent on their android phone, I guess based on that I just kinda figured everyone did

still nothing and its starting to tick me off
handcent is ok, but i prefer the android SMS app.
any updates on fixing this?
Are your contacts phones numbers set as 'mobile'? I think the default application only pops-up contacts' mobile numbers.
If you imported them from another contact list then it's possible that they've been defaulted to something different.

this fixed it thanks!
all my contacts were set as "other"
Glad I could help.
Apps like handcent sms optionally allow you to use non-mobile numbers for SMSs, but the default app it quite restricted.
For some reason, my caller ID on Fresh 2.0b is not showing the correct contact information for incoming/outgoing/call logs. It has picked a random person to be all calls.
Additionally this is a person that is not even in my Google Contacts list, they are a person from Facebook that does not even have a phone number listed in Facebook.
Is this a Facebook app thing or a dialer issue? And what do I need to do to fix it?

in the search function of the site type in "Contacts Bug" hope some of the solutions there help you... I was still unable to get this fixed after endless trials on multiple roms mind you. Good luck. I'm the person asking for this exact same thing

Well I did just figure out how to get rid of it.
I went under settings and removed the sync account for "Facebook for HTC Sense" and all my call logs reverted back to the right people... =/
That just means I cant use the facebook sync, which was half the reason I went with the hero. =(

It does work on the stock ROM.
Mine works fine on Damage .999999999 rom.
A number of people, myself included, have mentioned that since installing any JI6 based Captivate Froyo rom, the Contacts 'Group' feature is broken.
Selecting a contact from a group (e.g. 'Family') sometimes opens the correct contact, other times an incorrect contact opens, and sometimes a screen pops up asking us to pick an application from the provided list to be used to open the contact.
When I was trying out some of the I9000 based Froyo roms, I noticed that none of them had this problem. So last night I decided to replace the '/system/app/Contacts.apk' in my JI6 (Cognition 2.2vBETA8.1) with the apk from an I9000 Froyo rom.
With a couple of issues (see RED below), the Contacts 'Group' feature now performs without problem, always correctly opening the correct contact.
I've attached the replacement 'Contacts.apk' file, just BACKUP the original file in your '/system/app/' folder, then swap it with this one, then reboot.
You may find that you need to first 'chmod 666 /system/app/Contact.apk' before you can replace it. Just chmod it back to '644' after replacing.
NOTES:
IF THE AT&T CONTACTS SYNC FEATURE IS IMPORTANT TO YOU, DO NOT USE THIS FIX. THIS IS AN I9000 FILE, IT DOES NOT HAVE THE AT&T SYNC.
If you have any direct dial shortcut on your home screen, you will need to delete and rebuild them after applying this fix.
I found that simply by selecting what groups I want displayed in the contact list fixed all the problems I had.
Contacts > Menu > More > Display Options > Under choose contacts to display, select the dropdown you want to see. I only use Google contacts, so I selected All other contacts and Starred in Android contacts under Google.
Like I said, this fixed everything with wrong contacts being displayed when I tried to call or text the person.

That may work if you only use Google contacts, but not for 'Phone' contacts, contacts stored on the phone.

Has there been any confirmed instances of this problem existing with 'Phone' contacts. I've only read about the issues with Google Group contacts, a problem that I am too experiancing.

I ONLY use phone contacts, no Google contacts, and no SIM contacts. And this Group bug has vexed me since day one of the leaked Captivate Froyo release, and continued on every Captivate Froyo based rom (e.g. Cognition).
Replacing the Contacts.apk file I attached in post #1 of this thread fixed it for me.

Ahh, I see. I tested it out, and I see what you mean. All contacts witin the Groups tab are affected. Up until now I only used the groups tab to check google contacts (since I didn't display them on the 'contacts' tab).
Looks like I'll have to give your "fix" a try. Thanks!!
swapped out the attached apk file using root exporer. Rebooted. Contacts crashing on startup. what am I doing wrong?

Well, that does fix the issue, but causes another one that will surely cause and uproar, again...
This will remove the integrated AT&T address book syncing.. a lot more people use it, more then I thought...

Just found another issues, the phone totally wigs out when using a direct dial shortcut on the home screen..
says its unable to make the call, then if you hit end call it hits the button you cant see, which makes it try to call again, you have to just wait or you will get into some crazy loop.

Thanks for catching that DG, I added it to my disclaimer.
This works great; I am running Cognition 2.2 Beta9 and the only real issue I had was this. I have a large number of contacts and depend on groups. Thanks
For anyone having issues you really do need to edit the permissions; otherwise you will run into problems but it may look like the change was made. I used Root Explorer and copied the original Contacts.apk to a backup directory. Then I went back to the system-apps directory and changed the permissions to rwxrwxrwx and copied the new file over the original. Then changed permissions back to rw-r--r--, which is the default setting and restarted the phone. It works perfectly and I can even use all the homescreen shortcuts (Direct Dial); I did have to delete and recreate them though.
Direct Dial workaround

Any way to keep the video call option from coming up with the direct dial link?
I just don't want to see it, since I can't use it... It takes up precious real estate on the little popup list of options.

Just copy this file to the system/app directory.- i used root explorer - do not delete the old one, just use the copy and paste option.
Then Reboot!

I thought that might be the case!
If you are just calling the contact you may just want to use direct dial, or direct messaging if only texting. I don't know of any way to change the contact options for a contact shortcut.
Since upgrading to froyo iv noticed messages are appearing in my call log. Dont know about anyone else but i find this to be very annoying when trying to find an unsaved number. Are there any ways to change this feature to display calls only same as before?
Thanks

Unfortunately the phone doesn't have a true 'call log' it instead uses the samsung contact log which I also find to be a bit of an annoyance.
I have the same problem on my epic with froyo. I send about 7000 or 8000 messages a month so this thing is starting to become annoying. Does anyone have a solution? anyway to put the 2.1 dial pad and call log back?
i am also looking to solve this. hate all the smses clogging up call log. typical "smart-ass" decision by samsung.
At least im not the only one that finds this hugely annoying!
Hopefully someone can extract the old one for us to replace this feature
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I agree! This is very annoying. A simple "only calls" option would be perfect.
A temporary fix is to sort it to "missed calls" or "recieved calls" (depending on what are you looking for), but it's not the same.
Anyone found a fix for this issue yet? Will try asking in the sgstools thread see if he can cook up a fix there.
Thanks.

Workaround
I upgraded to Froyo yesterday and this has been pissing me off all day. Not long after finding this post I found a workaround. I've installed Dialer One from Android Market, and using Launcher Pro, I moved the Froyo phone app from the home screen and put Dialer One in it's place, and also renamed it to Phone on my Launcher Pro home screen. I also replaced the icon on the bottom bar with Dialer One.
Any easier ways to get this sorted?
There is a workaround for this. Check my previous thread on the same subject for details.
Most people don't realize that there are TWO call log apps on the native dialer. The first can be found by opening the native dialer and clicking LOGS. That one has the problem you describe.
The second can be found by opening the dialer, click on CONTACTS and then HISTORY. Click the settings button and unselect "messages".

montrealguy,
I don't have that setting in my sprint epic 4g

When I look under the Contacts and History, it looks correct. Only phone calls showing up. But when I click on the Call Logs in the dialer, it has messages also. You can go to menu and then View By, and modify it here, but no good option to see all but messages.

Same issue here on my Samsung Vibrant on 2.2... Is there a way I could install the apk file from 2.1 to replace the froyo dialer files? It's annoying to have messages show up within my call log, that's what the messages log is for
Bump for someone to please assist... thanks.
If you go to the dialer and then logs and push the menu button and select "view by" you can at least sort by call type. This is with 2.2.1 btw.

Try Chomp SMS from the market, or remove the -'s from each phone number in your contacts.
did you have it working on the official Froyo?
I've not had a problem with MMS on any froyo ROM since i removed the -'s as Mannymal mentioned above.
MMS
change your contacts format from (xxx) xxx-xxxx to plain xxxxxxxxxx.
that did the trick for me.
If you don't want to do it yourself, there is Contacts Clean-up. You find it on the market. Select format +xxyyyzzzzzzz and apply it to all your contacts.
hope it helps!
I have had off and on problems with this. It seems if you take the +1 off the number, sometimes that works. You have to edit the number in the contacts.
Handcent worked for me.

It is an undocumented bug. Remove the dashes from contact phone numbers and the MMS should go through properly.
my mms works fine on bionix 1.3.1 havent done anything special..it my be that my # format for contacts has always been without dashes.

If you have your data network off to save some battery then try turning it on to send it. Ive always had it off and finally found out why i couldn't send mms.
