I even tried to flash aosp mms and its still not working :/
Try Chomp SMS from the market, or remove the -'s from each phone number in your contacts.
did you have it working on the official Froyo?
I've not had a problem with MMS on any froyo ROM since i removed the -'s as Mannymal mentioned above.
MMS
change your contacts format from (xxx) xxx-xxxx to plain xxxxxxxxxx.
that did the trick for me.
If you don't want to do it yourself, there is Contacts Clean-up. You find it on the market. Select format +xxyyyzzzzzzz and apply it to all your contacts.
hope it helps!
I have had off and on problems with this. It seems if you take the +1 off the number, sometimes that works. You have to edit the number in the contacts.
Handcent worked for me.

It is an undocumented bug. Remove the dashes from contact phone numbers and the MMS should go through properly.
my mms works fine on bionix 1.3.1 havent done anything special..it my be that my # format for contacts has always been without dashes.
Mine works fine with the dashes.

Use a different ROM maybe?
I switched to Sweet Honey, and it rocks.
If you have your data network off to save some battery then try turning it on to send it. Ive always had it off and finally found out why i couldn't send mms.

It wont let me select a contact when I click on to
I can go to the contacts and press the smiley face thing and it will let me but if I try to type the name it just types it with no number. ir just randomly creates numbers. ive already done a hard/soft/factory reset
what am I doing wrong?
this is pissing me off
Try using handcent sms and see if that works
is that an SMS app?
The best i bet 80% of the people here use it
this fixed it, but I HATE the way it looks, no way we can get the original SMS app working correctly?

Handcent can be fully customized so the look can be changed dramatically.
Have you tried settings. Privacy. Reset to default? And Forgive me i'm assuming you already restarted the phone To see if that fixed it...
In Handcent go to the settings, you can change almost every single aspect of the app, its pretty damn cool
Weird, I want to report I've had no issue with the original SMS program, I can't seem to reproduce that. Do people really use handcent?
I dont know anyone personally that doesnt use handcent on their android phone, I guess based on that I just kinda figured everyone did

still nothing and its starting to tick me off
handcent is ok, but i prefer the android SMS app.
any updates on fixing this?
Are your contacts phones numbers set as 'mobile'? I think the default application only pops-up contacts' mobile numbers.
If you imported them from another contact list then it's possible that they've been defaulted to something different.

this fixed it thanks!
all my contacts were set as "other"
Glad I could help.
Apps like handcent sms optionally allow you to use non-mobile numbers for SMSs, but the default app it quite restricted.
I am having trouble text messaging my mom because the phone is adding +1 to the beginning of her phone number. The text message never goes thru. When I send the text message by typing in the number it sends fine.the problem is only when I select the contact from list. The contact list does not have the +1 in it so I don't know where it is coming from

Yea, i actually sat on the phone with verizon tech support for 2+ hours while they debugged this issue, turns out for some reason the +1 breaks it.. they never gave me an explanation, only a fix. Take the +1 out of the contact and make sure its saved and synced, you also need to nuke your message history after making the change or new messages will still have the +1 in front of them.
-Zetas
I tried taking it out of the contact # and killed the message history but still not working

I have the same problem...I don't get why this phone was released with so many bugs....I'm about to go get an Incredible
I had the same issue and was waiting for someone else to have this problem too. Removing the +1 on your phone contacts won't sync it completely it seems so once google syncs on your phone again the +1 will return. So what I ended up having to do is going on gmail on my pc and deleting all the +1 contacts in there. That did the trick right away. Hope this helps

same thing happened to me (sending a text to AT&T) - had to remove the 1 from all my contacts via GMAIL.
Now fixed
Strange. I don't have any issues like this.
I did have the same issue as the op described, but I think the ota update fixed it or the clean rom posted in the development forum corrected the messaging app. It definitly has something to do with the messaging app since when I installed handcent sms all my messages worked without the +1 being added.

I had the same problem and fixed mine..here are the steps I took.
Log into Gmail on your computer, go through all your contacts and take out the +1 as well as the dashes 123-456-7890 to 1234567890 and save that. I then did a factory reset for my phone. Everything works great now.
I think when you have a GSM service they use the + symbol
I had this same problem. When I got my phone the text messaging was working just fine. Couple days later no one was getting my text. So I went down to the store and they did everything they could do and I finally figured out it was the +1 in the numbers.
I switched over from a G1 on T-Mobile, so GSM can use +1 but it seems Verizon or CDMA has a problem with it.
I went through all my contacts, got rid of the +1. Yet when I'd send a message through the default sms app the moment they replied back it would automatically add the +1 again. So the only solution I found was that I had to use a different SMS app. I went with Handcent.
Im more concerned why you have the country code in your contacts list anyway? Ever since I had my first phone years ago manuals said not to put the country code in your contacts list for domestic contacts. Ive never had a problem.

I had an sms issue I have been trying to resolve for weeks. Spent three hours with tech support troubleshooting, and finally determined something in the hardware. Took it in for a replacement. My g/f has the same phone, and no issues.
I wish verizon (or Samsung?) would fix this!

When traveling internationally, it's a royal PIA when your US & Canada contact records don't include the country code and you're trying to place a call to north america... When I go overseas, I use an unlocked GSM android phone, and I would like to load my US contacts via Google in a usable format (10 digit numbers aren't usable from abroad).
This is a Verizon-Samsung bug - removing the country code from all US contact records is a work-around (not a fix!). My previous Verizon phones (mostly old Windows mobile handsets) had no trouble sending texts to US mobiles using the international standard country code prefix.
I just loaded up the leaked froyo modem, kernel and rom (EB01, EB16 & superclean 2.6 voodoo respectively), and unfortunately I see this issue persists...
Can anyone tell me if any of the verizon Android handsets from HTC or motorola share this flaw?
Thanks!
When you download the Facebook for Android app, it asks you to sync contacts. DON'T DO IT. Whenever someone has a phone number in their Facebook profile, regardless of if there is an existing contact that it will link to or not, the number will have a +1 in front of it. For instance, a number that should read 123-456-7890 would read +1123-456-7890. Facebook adds this for unknown reasons. When you send a text to the borked number, the text goes through, even on verizon.com, it says that the text was sent by you and that the other person received it on their profile. However, the person does not receive it on their phone. Also, if you call someone with a borked number, the phone will not ring.
In conclusion: Don't sync Facebook contacts, and your SMS should send fine and calling should work fine. Alternatively, you can use any messaging app but stock, such as Go SMS Pro and the message will go through fine, even with the +1 format.
Hope this helped someone.

Nice Find man i havent noticed this but ill be weary of this from now on
How does this explain people receiving some messages and not others? If it was the number they wouldn't receive any texts at all, not just 30% of them. I noticed this a while ago and I couldn't call people with the +1, but they received texts just fine.
Sent from my Optimized Shift using XDA App
Only people who have their numbers listed in their Facebook profile are affected.
This is what worked for me. If it doesn't work for you, then I'm sorry.
I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm just saying maybe there's two seperate issues. Without my Facebook contacts synced some messages are going through and some aren't. Maybe its just me, but I've seen posts with people saying the same. Thank you for your solution nonetheless.

You're welcome. I'm not saying by any means that this will solve everyone's issues. Just my experienced and it worked for me. Best of luck to you on sorting whatever is up with your SMS out. What ROM are you using?
+1 is the country code for the USA, no idea why it's adding it though. I know that wavesecure requires you add +1 to the contacts on your contact list since the texts come from somewhere in asia IIRC (may not be true now since McAfee owns them).
I know it is, but since it's a cell phone, you don't use the 1 or +1, which messes it up.
Thank you for putting this up. I was confused and frustrated as to why lots of my contacts didn't receive or was able to send any texts or calls to me. But now its all good
I'm going to test this theory. Hope this works. Thanks

Try using Contacts Clean-up from Android Market. It works great and resolved my issue on the fly. Dev just made it CDMA compatible
I think this only matters on sense roms. I know I need to be on aosp for dialing businesses through voice search to work because it also adds a +1 (at least it used to).
Thanks for the post. It was driving me crazy.

Just downloaded and used, great app! Thanks for the suggestion.
Let's start with some backgrounds. I install GB and rooted with r2beta0's method. I live in HK so the country code would be +852 and I've been saving my contacts without country code.
Now the thing is that when I receive a text from my frd, the system fails to show the name of the sender (pretty sure it is not related to the application I use as both stock and GO SMS have the same problem), since the sms id comes with the country code.
It is very strange coz I never had the same issue when I was on Froyo.
PS. I tried to call a frd with country code inserted, the system fails to recognize it too.
I have the same problem
@tapatalk
AFAIK the phone is not aware of the country code. It should look for the last part of the phone number and decide who's got that number.
One case when this happens is when you have the same number for a different contact. One common case is the contact is duplicated in your directory (like one on the phone and the other on the sim card).
On way to check the duplication is to dial the number manually and see if the name appears when you click on dial.
Good luck

That was just a guess and the common issue but as you said it would be the firmware then.

Try the number like you see it in your directory? like an exact copy. I am not sure how you can fix this though.
You could try adding a new number to the phone as a test so you know it has not been duplicated. After that do the same thing and try and dial the number. If that fails then I would think the issue would be the phonebook.
The phonebook should be a db on the phone. I just had a quick look on google and the file appears to be here:
Code:
/data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases/contacts.db
Maybe ther'e a permission issue? Sorry I am a noob as well on Android and that's all I can think of.
Good luck and let us know how you go. I am still stuck in trying to root my MS2 to put GB on it
K.
I use the very same phonebook which is synchronized to my google acc and with this same set of contacts I encountered the issue in GB but not in Froyo. That's why I said I guess it would be sw problem. Anyway good luck on getting GB. Who knows if you will have the same issue too LOL

I live in the UK and I'm having a similar problem. If a number has the country code in it it is recognised as a contact in texts, but if it just has a 0 it is the reverse.
This is a major flaw for me which is annoying because I really like everything else about the ROM.
Does anyone have a clue how to fix this?
Yeps, it's happening here too. I'm having problems with number formatting too: like 8888-9999 gets formatted as 888-899-99 instead. Time to look for fixed (or just install CM7
For some reason in my hangouts app it is only showing my contact numbers not the name. But in the default messages app I am able to view the names from the contatcs? Am I missing a step? It worked fine on my HTC one.. I am running Sweet Rom V5
Also could anyone suggest any kernels that run well with this rom. Thanks!

I have disabled the default messaging app and have left SMS turned on for Hangouts.. But nothing seems to work for the contacts to be shown. only SOME contacts show the name but most just show the number.. Not sure where to go from here. Might do a clean install of the rom, but trying to avoid that.
