Hello all!
I recently bought an i337m S4, and I've got a few chargers around from older phones. I have two that are 0.7A. I'm wondering if it will do any harm to the battery to be charging it at a slower rate? I usually plug my phone in at night, so I was thinking it would be fine to use the 0.7A charger overnight and use the faster 2A charger that came with the phone when I'm on the go and need to charge faster.
So, is it OK to use the slower charger and not harm my battery?
Thanks a lot!
I always use charger that came with the phone. If you want it to charge slower just plug it into a usb port.

No it won't hurt. I use a .7A at work all the time. However it doesn't charge while using the phone so I let it sit and it charges fine.

Alright, thanks a lot! I'll go ahead and use it to charge overnight.

Any risk in using a different charger than the original samsung one to charge the sgs2?
I use a combination of blackberry charger at work, universal micro usb charger downstairs at home, universal car charger and official charger upstairs.
Any concerns with this?
I've been doing that for ages. I use the droid, SE x10 and iPhone chargers with no issue.
As always YMMV
I am using htc's charger which has a higher rating than samsung charger. No problem at all...

I use a Sony charger to charge my S2 , I have not even removed the Samsung one from the box , As long as you use a branded charger will be fine.
I've tried to use Nokia's 1200 mA charger, It did charge the phone but whenever i connected that charger the phone would slow down terribly. So, whatever you use, try to keep it around Samsung's charger's 700 mA.
Ive found that the standard charger is rubbish! I had my galaxy s 4 month and it broke, my wifes galaxy 3 did same and now i dont even bother with the one out the box, just use the usb cable and the adapter i got with my tab.

Absolutely right...my phone is about 1 month old..and the official samsung charger is already broken..not charging anymore..i guess there is an internal wire breakage at the flexible point of the charger becoz when i shake the wire at that point it starts charging intermittently..

Same here. I tried all sorts to get it to work with no joy. I now have 3 duff samsung chargers that are potentially a fire hazard if left plugged in! Tempted to email samsung and raise this concern.

At home I use a Lenmar AC-to-USB 1A charger I picked up at Fry's for around $10; in the car I use a 1A Cygnett 12V-to-USB charger, also from Fry's. Both charge the device at least as well as the OEM AC charger; the car charger appears to charge the SGS2 even when I'm running CoPilot Live.
I use the iGO charge anywhere.
It's a tad pricey, but since the GS2 battery life isn't great (my only complaint on the phone), the charger is great for it since it has an internal battery that charges up when you put it in an outlet so you can charge the phone without needing an outlet. Great for in school or walking around, just put it in my bag and press the button and it charges.
I'm using my BlackBerry charger with no issues, I just do it for convenience as the charging time is the same as the standard charger.
Cheers for the replies, you have put my worried little mind at ease!

+1 .Just used the charger from a different brand and no bad feelings while using it
well, i just emailed samsung raising my concerns regarding the faulty chargers... see what they come back with....
Guys have you noticed any change in response when we plug in another charger?
I have been using the HTC charger, 200 mA (input), Output 5V --> 1A.
Whenever i connect my phone to charge and try to work on it, i see my screen lag terribly. Haven't tried it with the supplied charger though due to the low voltage that came with it.
I know i would be wrong, but wanted to check with the experts on this forum...

200ma is way low, less than half the 500 ma usb standard. Get a new charger. Most of the chargers you are going to see will be 500 ma I would go with double that.
Some (bad?) chargers will disable touchscreen
I have a couple of usb-chargers off ebay and they give some trouble.
When connected, the touchscreen will not work anymore.
This is mentioned in the manual btw.
Guess the SII is a little sensitive.
Yeah, ebay chargers are a crapshoot. Head to walmart or similar and read the power specs, get something that puts out 5v at 1A LPS. This will charge much faster than the often usb based standard 500 mA chargers and the battery will not be harmed at that charging level which is what many stock HTC chargers put out nowdays. Do not get anything less than 500mA, this is the usb standard and works but will be slower to charge. El Cheapo no name chargers on ebay and such may have the spec but may or may not actually put out the juice. You can usually tell this because the phone will have problems like the ones mentioned right here. The stock charger does not put out any special juice, juice is juice. If a charger puts out to spec the phone will work while charging.
So is it me or does the s4 charge really really slow ?

Hi,
What is your charge time?
Mine is 2 to 2 and a half hours.
Which battery and/or charger are you using? After coming from the S2 I have noticed a large decrease in charging time with my S4, so this is very surprising to me.
Well I tried charging from my computers use port at work today only rise 20% in 2 hours

Well, laptop's USB port is not a charger - it's too weak for such a large battery.

...*facepalm*. You're not using original charger and you're complain that the one you use doens't works so well? Do you know that original charger is pulling 2000mA out, while your usb-port is pulling between 300mA and 500mA (depends if it front or back usb-port and the quality of usb port). Do the math, 2600mAh battery and 300mA / h. Full charge should take: 2600:300 = more than 8.5 hours.
With original charger S4 recharges from 0 to 100 in 1h 49minutes. If you take a solar charger it will charge even slower (like 48 hours for 0-100%).
Next time try to use your brain before complaining.

Your Samsung power brick has the cable physically attached to it? If not, you can just use a longer cable with the Samsung power supply.
The included power supply is 2 Amps, whoever is getting long charging times, make sure you use either the original Samsung power supply, or comparable in amperage supply.
Mine charges in 2 and a half hours.
Mine takes 2 to 2.5 h to charge from 0 to 100 percent. You should only use the new white charger, it's more powerful than the black one from s3, it's output is 2.0A ,old one is only 1.0A. Newer use other chargers as they may mess up your battery or phone.

I have to check the amps but based on google the Nokia Charger is at 1.3 Amps. I need to remind myself to switch the short Samsung to longer Nokia cables.
Is it safe to get a higher Amp charger, the one that the iPad uses to charge my S4? No drawback execpt for a faster charging time right?

Take it this way, grilling meat takes for example 45minutes to cook completely. You take it to some powerful furnace like 2000degrees for 5minutes then what do you expect from it to give you back? Well cooked meat or some burned meat outside and maybe raw inside?

put it this way... the s3 comes with a 700ma charger. it charges a bit slow. and has a 2100mah battery.
the s4 comes with a 2 amp charger. thats 2000ma. it doesnt charge slowly if you use this charger. i personally am going to pop it on this charger when i get home from work and then keep it on my 700ma charger overnight... no reason to waste that powerful output, it will simply waste electricity.
make sure:
1. you use the charger that came with it
2. you use a cable thats as long as (or shorter than) the stock charging cable. longer usb cables tend to charge the phone slower.
also keep in mind usb ports charge any phone slowly. the s4 will charge even slower on them because the battery is oversized compared to most.
I'm using note 2 charger and if I surf Web while charging, literally it is not charging at all.. battery is not going up or down.. Note 2 was not like this.. i could charge battery even if I play 3d game..

wow... what a science expert... first time i heard that longer cables charge slower... LOL
u funny dude.. there is no such thing like that buddy!
its just a software issue. S4 is just released and the chipset is very new. u people should wait for sometime...its a matter of few firmware releases from samsung for S4 and all the issues will be resolved. just like the latest issue resolved the over heating issues.

USB is too low a voltage to charge a modern smartphone all that quickly, my S4 take 2.5 hours roughly to full charge on the stock charger.

Hi, doing the usual upgrade as I have since the s1 days. Does anyone have the genuine wireless cases and do they work well? How's the charging times?
I do. It works great. My experience is that it charges faster than a USB 2.0 cable but slower than the 3.0 cable it came with.

i've used the official case and the 3rd party inserts and they all charge at about the same pace. A bit less than half the speed of the OEM charger. Using the Galaxy charging app i get about 1200-1800 Mah with the charger and about 600-700 with the charging back/cards.
Hi all,
I have a Samsung s4 GT i9505 and when i leave it for charge the charger gets very very hot and im not sure on what to do. I only bought the phone yesterday ( 22/07/14) so it was only my first night with it. I decided to switch off the phone and leave it on charge, but that made no difference. I installed all the OTA updates yesterday as well.
Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks

I have the same problem with my s4. I guess it is normal for a samsung devices, because I heard from other people having this problem on a s3 or s2
Same here, as long as it doesnt shut down its np, the charger for s4 provides 2A which makes it warm while charging
Sent from my GT-I9505 using XDA Free mobile app
It is not a problem. The battery gets warmer because samsung charger gives more "juice" than most other chargers. The battery needs more power to charge because the phone uses it more, so the battery heats up more. Also, it charges faster...
The higher the charger current (2A), the faster the charge rate, but also, more heat!
Guys my charger isnt a 2A charger, I got a 1A travel adaptor.
Input 100-240V 50-60Hz 0.15A
Output 5.0V 1.0A
But it runs incredibly hot when i leave it for a charge.
Hi, so.. I forgot my charger at work.. and everyone around me use iphones and I have to charge my phone
I found an old samsung galaxy 1 charger, and so far it's charging pretty good..
but I want to make sure that it's safe. do you guys know if using a samsung charger can do any damage to my battery?
I also have dorimanx kernel forcing fast charge mode.
thanks in advance.

Nope, it's fine. It might charge slower, but the voltage will be the same. A non-android compatible charger will only charge at 500mAh due to the way Android determines USB vs AC charging, that's really the only difference you'll ever see on such a charger beyond the capacity of the charger itself, which would just manifest itself as slower charging.
