I have the sprint gs4 and its at MK2 and 4.3. I am wondering if I can sim unlock this phone without calling the carrier for domestic use? I called the carrier first to ask for a sim unlock and because the previous owner was late on his bill payment twice last year they say the account isn't in good standing and refuse to unlock it. So I rooted my phone and lost my wifi and mobile network, got that fixed and decided to go to sprint and add the phone to my account and learned my phone was freezing on the dial screen and no sound, so I followed Spiricore’s Extra Safe Root-To-ROM Guide to resolve the issues and that is where I stand now.
Can someone please point me in the right direction if this phone is able to be sim unlocked without having the carrier do it?

If you are on 4.3 with the Knox bootloader you can't do what you're asking as far as I know. You'd need to go back to MDC or MDL, and you can't if your on MJA/MK2.
If you're not on the Knox bootloader there are instructions in these forums for domestic sim unlock. THIS QUESTION IS ASKED EVERY. " DAY - CAN I SIM UNLOCK, HOW TO SIM UNLOCK, DOMESTIC SIM UNLOCK" ETC..
Maybe you'll get lucky and get it going.
oh yes you can
you only trip the knox counter but i install any rom i want all the time
wont be under warranty but who cares as you can pretty much flash what you want
you can even get back to stock official mk2 but knox warranty bit will = 0x1 which means something been modified but thats all
just run triangle away and reset counter to 0 (follow its direcections) then after its done let it reboot then power off phone
put phone in dload mode and flash official mja and let it OTA to MK2
works for me to get back to stock
i use philz cwmr for my recovery and i install supersu1.86.zip but make sure after you boot into philz cust recovery tell it to reboot to bootloader one time and select NO to fix root
after it boots back into the recovery flash supersu1.86.zip and bam your rooted with a custom recovery
from this point you can install just about any rom i believe

There currently isn't a way to reset the knox warranty flag. If you've done it than show some pictures. Triangle away resets the load counter but not the warranty flag. So it's kind of useless until there is a method to reset the knox warranty flag.
But that said, while you cannot currently downgrade fully to MDC because of the knox enabled bootloader in MJA and newer. I believe all you have to do is downgrade to the MDC modem to attempt the unlock process. If you search the unlock threads I believe people have been successful. After you complete the unlock then you can flash your modem back to MJA or MK2.
sim unlock even possible?
Hello,
I wonder if it is possible to unlock the sim of a sprint galaxy sph-L720 with mk2 baseband and android 4.3.?
What steps do I follow to unlock sim without being root?
you need to root first and change the rom? could you recommend some procedure.
I can return to the mk2 mdc or not as the official 4.2.2 and mdc?
sorry, use a translator to ask my question.
I hope you can help me.
Thank you for your attention.

The OP was asking if MK2 can do the SIM unlock and the first response was correct. All the info on here regarding doing the unlock require the phone to be reverted back to pre-mf9 firmware. MDL usually. Once someone takes the MJA or MK2 bootloader they are stuck and can not go back. Everything you said about rooting and flashing on MK2 is correct, just not relevant to the original question.

i never said one time triangle away resets knox counter
i clearly said it will void the warranty
i said you can go back to stock
go in settings about phone and it will say official in both areas where you check
you can then take any OTA update just fine
so yes you are stock exactly like i said
i clearly said warranty will be bad but who cares.
people getting drunk and on the forums again....
I don't know about MkII but I took the 4.3mja OTA and that was before I had attempted any rooting or anything like that. So I started from there. I did root 4.3 and then ran Sacs but wasn't able to find any way to unlock until I found this info below:
I was able via odin to flash the phone and modem from the files in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49209582&postcount=695
and then find the file for MDC modem flash (that file is on first page of international unlock thread).
I first followed the international unlock guide, then the domestic unlock guide and I was able to unlock my phone. It was working fine on at&t until I re-rooted and now I'm not getting data.
Now, I saw the little knox message at the top of the screen on boot after rooting the first time, but when I flashed the stock tar from the post above it doesn't show up anymore, for whatever it's worth.
Right now I'm on the 4.3 from above with an MDC baseband.
Help please with SPH-L720

Please can anyone tell me the reason why I cannot flash anything via odin... I'm trying flash stock Rom MJA baseband over MK2, but everytime i click start, odin take about 10 seconds after it fails, the same error while trying to flash MCD, MDL, and when trying to downgrade only the MK2 Baseband to MDC

Because you CANNOT downgrade via odin anymore thanks to Knox. You can't go from NAE to MK2 or MK2 to MJA. MODEMS are fine but full tars are not.

Is that mean my SPH-L720 cannot be unlocked? Or is it impossible to get this phone unlocked if someone already upgrade to MK2

Hello everybody im in a little bit of a crisis.
I tried to update my modem to MK2 and I used odin to do so. It turns out that it failed for some reason.
After that whenever I boot my phone it gives me a black screen and says Firmware Upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again.
After that I followed this youtube video right here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1jyZ5QafAQ and downloaded this file to go back to stock: http://downloadandroidfiles.org/download-l720vpuamdc_l720sptamdc_spr-zip/
But yet it still gave me a Fail in odin. Any help would be appreciated as I am Freaking out right now
Here is the message log directly from odin when it starts
Firmware update starts
aboot.mbn
NAND write start
Complete(Write) Operation Failed
I switched USB ports now Odin is saying there is no PIT partition

If your on MJA/MK2 firmware (bootloader) you cannot go back to MDC (the file you showed).
Also did you run PC Odin 'As Administrator'?
You can find the link to the MK2 here.

I am on MDC bootloader. What I did was download the tar file from stockroms.net for MDC. And I ran the 3.07 odin as adimistrator and it worked. Thank you cause I think that it was me not clicking run as administrator. Another question: Is it worth upgrading to MK2 if I wanna root again or should I just keep MK2. I have the geeksquad warrenty from bestbuy so it shouldn't matter if it trips the knox flag because I give them rooted phones all the time.

I wouldn't update to the knox bootloader (take the OTA or flash the full .tar) but that's me, for now.
Since you're on the earlier bootloader you can still update to any number of ROMs that have the knox bootloader removed.
Also I would definitely update the modem firmware - Unknownforce has a thread for that here.
Spend some time and read and you'll find loads of stuff you can do.
Good luck.

So I can use the files http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2338919 in odin to update. Also since I am on mdc could I just use the latest in odin or do I have to go incrementaly.

If you truly are on MDC and did not trip the knox bootloader you can Odin back to stock MDC. That will wipe the phone completely, giving you an all MDC phone - bootloader, recovery (stock), kernel, modem and ROM.
But I would just jump to MF9. It was the last official without the Knox bootloader. You can grab that here.
This is the FULL system tar. All stock, kernel, recovery, ROM Modem.
Extract the .tar.md5 and place that in the PDA slot and that's it. Make sure you don't check 'repartition'!.
Then use CF-Autoroot to root and again be careful NOT to check anything like repartition etc.
Once rooted you can then open up supersu, update the binaries. Go to playstore and download GooManager. User that to install custom recovery and then you can flash away.
I do suggest you spend some time here reading a whole bunch. You'll learn a lot about these methods and how and what you can do.
Good luck.

Ok I have upgraded to MF9 now should I use Unkown Forces links: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2338919 to upgrade the firmware and modem?
And when I try to root with CF auto root on MF9 it fails on complete write operation failed.
Strike that its all good
If you're on MF9 full rooted you can update your firmware/modem following Unknownforce's instructions.
HOWEVER PLEASE take heed about the MJA(MK2 too) Notes: ...
some people report better success with turning Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time unchecked. Do the same flash, but when you see PASS on Odin, unplug the phone and Hold the Power key for 10 seconds to reboot.

And read through the whole post not just the OP. Some people had to flash it a few times to get it to show up (in system info) properly - mainly because they didn't follow directions precisely and skipped the note part on MJA/MK2.
Since you're now on MF9 fully rooted (stock) you can install yourself a custom recovery (Philz or TWRP - the latest Philz;philz_touch_6.08.9-jfltespr, seems to be the most reliable for now) and flash some ROMs. Virtually all of the 4.3/4.4 ROMs require the MK2 modem so know that too.
One thing I would highly recommend is to spend some time reading through the sections to get a clearer understanding of how this device behaves vs others (HTC, Moto etc.). Every device has it's peculiarities and caveats and not paying attention to them could ruin you day.

People need to know the difference between soft bricked and hard bricked. Most say bricked and they mean soft. Hard is nearly impossible to get the phone back up and running. I have that same problem when I try to install a kernel. You need to reflash a ROM.

can you tell me which rom i need to flash because i cant figure out what rom i need to use in odin
So I was able to root for the first time with Towelroot. That was successful and the I downloaded the clockwork mod and rom manager to attempt to flash Cyanogenmod. however after installing those two apps I restarted and when it booted up it now only shows the error message "System software not authorized by Verizon Wireless has been found on your phone. Please turn off your phone and go to the nearest Verizon Wireless store for help. I do believe that I created a backup on my SD card but I cannot access it and I cant seem to be able to even use Odin to get my phone back to stock Kit Kat firmware. Can somebody please help figure out how to get my phone to boot back up and hopefully keep my root intact?
If your on a retail note, you can't run cm so you would need to Odin back to stock nc4 and re root with towel root and install safe strap recovery . If on developer note 3 dis regard and wait for someone with a dev phone to answer.?
thanks
Okay thanks but wouldn't that just put me back into a bootloop again? using safestrap and towelroot put me in this situation and I don't know what caused this issue and I would like to avoid it at all if possible on my next attempt. Is it because I didn't unlock the bootloader?

You can't unlock the bootloader on a retail Note 3.
Towelroot and Safe strap didn't get you in this situation.
You need to do a bit more research and read up before continuing.
All we have is root.
Safe strap is needed to run custom roms.
There are no custom kernels available since the bootloaders locked.
So don't try to use cwm.
Try to get your phone in download mode and odin the stock tar then root again and install Safstrap 3.75 build 4.
I have the s4 sgh l337 with the mdl bootloader from way back. was running Goldeneye rom and it started giving me issues. so i thought id flash the Albe s6 port rom and thought i needed safestrap for it. so i installed safestrap by installing the apk and busybox and the nc1 flasher and rebooted.
now i get the SYSTEM SOFTWARE NOT AUTHORIZED FOR AT&T and i have no recover either! its the stock recovery and im not sure how i can flash another kernel or recovery back to just reset the whole phone.
any help would be much appreciated

If you'd sure you are still on MDL bootloader then you need to odin the stock MDL firmware.
Bear in mind that if your bootloader is no longer MDL then flashing the MDL firmware could trip the knox counter.
Safestrap is for the i337 with newer bootloader. It works on NC1 bootloader as such you need NC1 flasher.
Golden eye has an option to choose between old bootloaders (MDL/MDB) and Safestrap users. Albe S6 port does not appear to have that option.

Glad to hear it.
It did happen to me when I odin the MDB firmware on my MDL phone three years back. The MDL firmware I downloaded had checksum error so I had to use the MDB firmware instead.
I hit on UPDATE on the phone for an OTA update but it only says UNABLE TO CONNECT AT&T SERVER. When I bought it, it had 5.0.1 (I337UCUGOC3) out of the box. Searching on internet says that is bootloader locked (so I cant do anything).
- Can I Update to I337UCUGOK2 and bootloader will be unlocked (I mean, will I be able to do it)?
- Does anyone know where can I grab I337UCUGOK2 for offline install and is it ODIN safe to update it (remember I have I337UCUGOC3 bootloader locked)?
please help
Once the bootloader is locked, it will always be locked until someone finds a way to unlock it. Updating the bootloader will not allow it to be unlocked.

Unlocking/exploiting the bootloader for the AT&T is still in process, I think.
Bootloader locked means you can not install custom recovery like TWRP, CWM or custom kernel. You can still root, you can still use odin and you can still install custom rom using either safestrp or flashfire.
Here is the thread explaining how to upgrade stock or rooted stock roms.
The explanation starts from installation of NB1 firmware so that you can easily root the phone by using twolroot.
If you do not care for the root you can start reading from the step 2 "Flash update in stock recovery"
Since you are on OC3, you need OC3 to OC4 and OC4 to OK2 files to get OK2.
help... I want to RMA it

Everywhere says I need a kitkat rom as base.
My s4 came with 5.0.1 with OC3 and bootloader locked out of the box. I tried some post where says I can flash TWRP and CWM but my phone stucked on bootloops. Then I managed to get back to stock rom and now when I want to turn it on it says " SAMSUNG (and lower on the screen) Custom"
Camera began to fail and I want to return it as RMA but I was looking to reset the flash counter but every post I read is that OC3 bootloader locked users are just doomed.
Do you know a method that I can do for reset that counter?
Camera dont focus anymore and I tried all the posts about safemode, etc.

Flashing TWRP and CWM is for the AT&T S4 with older bootloader (MDL, MDB). After that two firmware versions the bootloader is locked.
For AT&T S4 the last full firmware released is NB1. After that they released incremental updates via OTA. That is why you need kitkat (NB1) as base.
For NB1, Muniz uploaded two firmwares. One is the stock and the other is rootable stock. Try the stock one and see you still have the custom symbol.
To reset the counter, there is an app calls Triangle away by Chainfire. However, it does not work on AT&T S4 with locked bootloader.

Thanks. I'll try Odin it with the stock rom from your link. I'll post news here when it finish flashing
1st part - Success
I'm on 4.4.2 NB1, flash counter back to normal but still bootloader locked
Now I have to go back to OC3 to RMA it.
OTA does nothing, smartswitch shows no updates neither kies.
I'll have to Odin it back to OC3
Can I have some help?
And Success. I'm back on stock OC3 no root.
time to RMA
- camera still doesn't focus

Hello
I need to sell my S4, and it is rooted. I'd like to do a factory reset on it, but I ask if doing so will lose root. I rooted it back in 2017, so I don't remember what I did to it, but I assume that I unlocked the bootloader so that I could root.
I can erase all data and pictures and apps manually, and leave it clean AND rooted, but I might prefer to do a factory reset. If I lose root, it won't be a big deal since any potential buyer of this phone might not even know what root is.
Thanks and be safe
Rooting the S4 has nothing to do with the bootloader, if you have a custom recovery installed then you're on the MDL or MDB bootloader which is a rare exploited bootloader. If you want to reset the phone, I would use Odin to do it by flashing the stock firmware you're currently on.

That depends on your current bootloader. You can flash the one you're on or flash a newer one. You can't flash an older one after a newer one though. Check your bootloader, if you're on MDL then you need the MDL firmware. If you're on anything else aside MDL then you will need other firmware.
